Message from the President
The launch of the inaugural AFLW competition in February last year was a turning point in both the history of our club and the game more broadly.
It was a privilege for our club to play in, and win, the first AFLW game against Collingwood, in front of a lock-out crowd at Ikon Park, with a TV audience in excess of a million viewers. Congratulations to our club’s inaugural AFLW team, coach Damien Keeping, captain Lauren Arnell and best and fairest winner
Brianna Davey, as well as the six players who were selected in the AFLW Team of the Year. This year will see Brianna Davey lead the team as captain. Bri will be joined by Lauren Arnell and Sarah Hosking as joint vice-captains in the three-player leadership group. While year one of AFLW saw the Club focus on setting the foundations of the team, year two provides an opportunity to focus on growth, as the Club remains committed to performance as well as the development of its people, both on and off the field. As an active participant throughout the trade period, the Club signed 11 new AFLW players, including All-Australian players Tayla Harris and Nicola Stevens. Joining them this season will be footy newcomers Kerryn Harrington (basketball) and Maddison Gay (netball). We continue our commitment and investment in women’s football, having been granted a VFLW licence. We will be fielding a women’s team in this year’s VFL competition, which commences on Saturday 5 May, against the Southern Saints.
In line with our strategy to grow and develop the game of women’s football in the northern corridor of Melbourne, our VFLW team will play five of its home games at Preston Oval and two at Ikon Park. I would like to thank our AFLW joint-major partners Hyundai and MC Labour, as well as partners Visy, ZTE, Vic Health and AFLW apparel partner, Cotton On for their continued support. There are exciting times ahead at the Carlton Football Club and I thank all of our members for their ongoing and unwavering support.

Message from the CEO
AFLW season one will forever be entrenched as a landmark moment for the Carlton Football Club.
As our Game Changers made history in the inaugural match against traditional rivals Collingwood in front of a lock-out crowd at Ikon Park, a new era of football was born. We are incredibly proud and thankful to our members, whose support of our club must be acknowledged. I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank each and every one of you for sharing our commitment to the AFLW program and for your ongoing commitment to the Carlton Football Club.
Having been awarded one of the eight licences for the maiden AFL Women’s competition in 2017, the Club is honoured to be part of a league that provides pathways and opportunities for all aspiring female athletes. Led by coach Damien Keeping, the AFLW team won four out of their seven games in the inaugural season and I’m sure members will be excited to witness the foundations that have been set for an exciting 2018. We head into AFLW 2.0 with new skipper and reigning Best and Fairest winner Brianna Davey, who will be joined by joint vice-captains, Lauren Arnell and Sarah Hosking. Having played a significant role in shaping our club’s initial bid for a licence, Lauren has been a great ambassador of the game. A crop of recently recruited players will also pull on the navy blue jumper for the first time and we look forward to watching their Carlton journeys develop. While we continue to work on growing our club and strive to foster a sense of belonging among all our people both in the industry and within the community, we also remain committed to continuing our work in the northern corridor to grow the game, particularly at a grassroots
level to encourage involvement among female participants. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our fantastic AFLW partners Hyundai and MC Labour, as well as partners ZTE, Visy and AFLW apparel partner Cotton On. We extend our best wishes to AFLW coach Damien Keeping and his team ahead of the opening clash with the Pies at Ikon Park on Friday 2 February. We look forward to seeing our members at our home ground for the first game of the season as we continue to witness our Game Changers make history. We encourage all Carlton members to urge other Blues supporters to attend and share in what is sure to be an exciting season.

Message from the Coach
had a sound understanding of the significant history of the Club they were now proudly part of. As a group, we sat back and reflected on the success of the first year of the AFLW and just what was achieved. I believe it was important for our group to do that. It was, after all, historic.
The trainings in the sweltering sun have eased, the game plan has been established and we now set our sights firmly on our 2018 AFLW campaign. In year one of AFLW, we set foundations and ensured our players
But we move forward, and this year it’s again about ‘living and learning Carlton’ and continuing to drive a performance focus among the program. We hold our players to account and we’ve established strong core values within the group. We’ve made it clear that the list has been established on cultural fit, and strength of character.
In highlighting the Club’s values, Brianna Davey will assume the captaincy for the 2018 AFLW season, with Lauren Arnell and Sarah Hosking set to serve as joint vice-captains. Notwithstanding her prominent impact in our backline on field, Bri is a wonderfully talented leader who continues to drive standards among her peers. I have no doubt Brianna will be a fantastic spearhead for our group this season, who will be very capably supported by Lauren and Sarah in a formal capacity too. Over the course of the off-season, we welcomed a number of new players to Ikon Park via the AFLW NAB Trade and Draft Period. Tayla Harris and Nicola Stevens both joined the Blues from Brisbane and Collingwood respectively, and their experience has already had a profound impact on our young playing group. Along with Kerryn Harrington, Maddison Gay, Tiahna Cochrane, Courtney Webb, Georgie Gee, Bridie Kennedy, Reni Hicks, Katie-Jayne Grieve and Sophie Li, we are delighted with the mix of talent and energy among our team. Similarly, I would also like to acknowledge the investment our coaching panel have made over the course of the long pre-season campaign, including Jackson Kornberg, new arrivals in Jessica Rottura, Nick Rutley and Jack Noble, as well as Graham Burgen.
The leadership from President Mark LoGiudice, new CEO Cain Liddle and Head of Football Andrew McKay is paramount for the success of our group and I thank them on behalf of our program for their continued belief. I’d also like to take this moment to wish Brendon Bolton and Josh Fraser well for their respective AFL and VFL campaigns in 2018. I would like to acknowledge the commitment and belief from Hyundai Australia and MC Labour as our continued joint-major partners of the AFLW program, as well as La Trobe University, ZTE and coaches partner Secure Parking. Finally, to the navy blue army, we thank you for your ongoing support and belief in the AFL Women’s competition. We are continually grateful and we look forward to seeing you wear the navy blue with pride this AFLW season. Every kick achieves a goal for our Game Changers, and we are ready to go! We are not placing a ceiling on what we can achieve in the second season of the AFLW competition. We hope to see you again filling the stands at Ikon Park in Round 1. Go Blues!

Message from the Captain
In 2017, the game was changed forever.
The AFL world took notice – you just had to witness the now famous ‘lock-out’ game at our very home, Ikon Park, to see the power of the new AFLW competition. It took leadership, belief and commitment from the pioneers across the league who pushed for this incredible opportunity. From the time we were initially granted a licence back in 2016, Carlton had a number of influential leaders including President Mark LoGiudice and Head of Football Andrew McKay who
led the way to make our AFLW program what it is today.

As we set our sights on 2018, Damien and his team of assistants have again crafted an intense pre-season campaign for us and we know the hard work will hold us in good stead as we give this season a red-hot crack.
To our supporters, we thank you for embracing us as the Game Changers. I still pinch myself that we have the privilege to wear the navy blue and I know how much this club means to our fans. We hope to do you proud this year and we look forward to your support again in 2018.
Personally, it is a huge honour to be named captain for the second instalment of our AFLW campaign. It’s a privilege not taken lightly and I can’t wait to lead the girls onto Ikon Park in Round 1. I’m very fortunate to have the support of Lauren Arnell and Sarah Hosking as joint vice-captains too. The experience ‘Loz’ brings to our group is invaluable and ‘Hosko’s’ energy will no doubt bounce off on the group this year. However, without being dismissive, it is not about the title. It is up to every single one of our 30 players to lead the way, and I call on you each to continue to live to our club values and to leave it all out on the field, week in week out. This season is upon us now and we have a job to get done.
So now, let’s continue what we started – we can’t wait to get out there on Friday 2 February against the old enemy! Go Blues! 13

Haighs chocolate, beaches, togs and accents – our interstate players are teaching their Victorian teammates a thing or two about their home towns! When childhood Bluebagger and ruck Kate Shierlaw was recruited to Carlton in 2016, she was the sole ‘interstater’ who continually copped (affectionate) banter over her posh Adelaide accent. Now, Sheirlaw has four teammates to stand alongside her! Five interstate players will grace the field for the Blues in 2018, with South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia all represented.

Fellow South Aussie Sophie Li, Brisbane-born Tayla Harris, Tasmanian Courtney Webb and the West’s Katie-Jayne, all recently made the move to Melbourne to pull on the Old Dark Navy Blue. Carlton Media sat down with our five ‘interstaters’ to gain an insight into their move, find out how they’re settling into Melbourne life and whether they’ve managed to navigate the city’s traffic. CM: Do you know your way around Melbourne yet, or are you still using your GPS? TH: I’m still using my GPS and I admit I have been lost a few times. I was on my way to Gab Pound’s house and of course there was the same address in two suburbs and I ended up going to the wrong spot – I realised when Gab
couldn’t see me out the front! (laughs) CW: I’m from Tassie so it’s a big change for me – the traffic is pretty bad! I got lost a couple of times and I actually have a similar story to Tayla. I’m staying on St Kilda Road and there’s two numbers that are the same in different suburbs, and of course we went to the wrong one! SL: I’m still using my GPS but I’m slowly getting there! KS: Even though this is my second year in Melbourne I’m still using my GPS every day. I lost my car in North Melbourne once which wasn’t fun and I didn’t have sunscreen on – so not pleasant for me (laughs). KG: I’m still navigating my way around Melbourne with my GPS on my phone, maps has truly been a life saver! CM: Coffee is a staple in Melbourne, have you located the best coffee spots? SL: I’ve found some great spots in Northcote and they know me by name now. CW: I love Nashi and it’s close to where I live which is great. TH: I’m only just into coffee, but I hear there’s a lot in Melbourne. KS: It’s not very Melbourne of me but I don’t like coffee! I’m going to vouch for the chai latte and Parkside across
the road from the Club do the best chai in Melbourne. KG: Every time I leave the house I try a coffee from somewhere different! CM: How are you settling into your new Melbourne lifestyle? SL: I’m still getting use to the traffic, but I’m settling in nicely.
moment. TH: I don’t have any family, but I do have friends and my host family has been unreal. KS: I knew Lauren Spark from the Bulldogs and then I met a few people through VFL and a got to know a lot of footy people.
KS: I feel like a local now – I get frustrated with the traffic every day but I love it. TH: Yeah, I was here so often so it wasn’t really hard to settle in, it was more knowing my way around and feeling like I can go to the shops without always having a big adventure. KG: I’ve settled in great to Melbourne, enjoying the change of lifestyle. I’m living in a suburb called black rock which is by the beach, makes me feel like I’m back home in Busselton. Lovely spot with a great strip of coffee shops! CM: Do you have any friends or family in Victoria? SL: I’ve been living with my sister for the past month, so it’s been great. CW: I’ve got some aunties and uncles here and my cousins – although I haven’t had a chance to see them yet and I’ve been here a month! (Laughs) Also my mum and dad made the trip over and are staying with me at the

KG: I don’t have any family or friends in Melbourne when I made the transition, but I’ve formed friendships since spending my time here. CM: Clearly it’s been a big move for all of you, what made you want to pack up and move interstate? SL: The opportunity to play AFLW and also experiencing what it means to join this club, the history and the culture was really a massive drawcard to come to Carlton. TH: It was a whole life change and experience for me. I saw it as a real challenge, both personally and for my footy – as soon as Carlton was an option, it was the only option for me.

KS: Last year when I didn’t have a job I did a lot of exploring, so the 12 Apostles, Dandenongs, Torquay, Sorrento – whatever Victoria has to offer.
KG: I moved interstate to start a new journey in my life as I was lucky enough to be picked in the rookie draft for Carlton. I have a wonderful opportunity ahead of me that excites me to be a part of AFLW. 18 Brianna Davey

TH: I’ve been more Sorrento…the other direction?…(all laugh)
CM: Was the move easier knowing there were a few interstate players on the list? SL: It’s nice to have other people going through the same things as yourself, it does make it a lot easier. TH: For sure, but everyone at the Club has been so welcoming and have made us feel at home right away, KG: Yeah, it definitely made the move easier knowing other girls were coming from interstate, sharing similar emotions about the experience as a whole.
CM: Have you had the chance to explore parts of Victoria yet and be a tourist? SL: Yeah, I’ve been to the Dandenongs and then down to Torquay – it’s really beautiful. CW: I’ve also been down to Torquay
CM: Kate you were the only interstate player on the list last year and now you have a fellow South Aussie alongside you in Sophie, have you bonded over frog cakes and pie floaters? KS: (Laughs) We have bonded over Haighs chocolate! It is great having the other guys here including Soph. I copped a lot of flack about my accent last year because apparently I have an accent, so it’s great to have Soph
now to back me up! TH: I don’t think Queenslanders have an accent, but I am a bit bogan (laughs) – sometimes I don’t complete my words. CM: Carlton plays a game against Adelaide in South Australia, Kate and Sophie are you two looking forward to playing in your home town? SL: I cannot wait, if I get picked to play I think they’ll be a big Carlton cheersquad and plenty of friends and family in the crowd! KS: Last year it was weird because all the Carlton girls would see their friends and family after each game in the crowd and I’d just be walking around, not knowing anyone. Then when we went to Adelaide I knew everyone in the stands, so that was really cool.

CM: What have you taught the playing group about your home state? SL: That Adelaide beaches are awesome! CW: Tassie is the best state in Australia! TH: It’s togs, not bathers! KS: Adelaide is so underrated, no one knows because when they go for trip they just go to the city and that’s what they take away and I would hate that. So, if you go to the wineries and

The Design
IN HER WORDS: DARCY VESCIO After a wild inaugural year, the idea behind the clash guernsey was to create a narrative which depicted the events of a truly historic season, and I can say it has been one of my favourite projects to date since I started as a graphic designer at the Club. In the beginning, I spent a heap of time rummaging through videos and articles from the past 18 months, collecting key quotes and symbols along the way. The process itself was special, it allowed me to reflect upon everything that had happened and what we had been through as a team. There was a lot to take in. A huge part of the process was to find an artist to bring the project to life and we identified local artist Eliza Svikulis as the best person for the job.
We wanted to collaborate with her because her values align strongly with ours and she worked on the ‘Game Changer’ wall with the ‘Letterettes’. The opportunity to collaborate with Eliza was super exciting, and I think she’s nailed the execution of our ideas. I liked the concept of wearing the jumper when we’re away from home, it’s sort of like you’re bringing a piece of Carlton with you wherever you go. The top half on the front of the jumper is centred around the heart, symbolising the feelings around the inaugural season and the emotions that came with that. The bottom half on front represents the emotions of the game – the nervousness in your belly. The back of the jumper is representative of the people who ‘backed us’. It pays tribute to the suburb of Carlton as well as acknowledging the > 2018 AFLW Season Guide | CARLTONFC.COM.AU

> women who paved the way for us. The guernsey is for the supporters as much as it is for the players.

The guernsey has over 30 individual elements across the front and back. From honouring Bri as our inaugural best and fairest, to a sketch of the lock-out crowd from Round 1, we felt it was important to include key events as well as lesser known elements which had significant meaning to the team. One of my favourite elements to include was a small bracelet with an attached horse shoe charm. Jess Hosking had been drafted to Carlton after she recently did an ACL knee injury. She was unable to train or play with us throughout the 2017 season, but her presence was as great as any other player. A couple of nights before Round 1 arrived, she cooked us all a huge pasta dinner after training –
which was impressive as she’d just had shoulder surgery, so she only had one functioning arm, the other in a sling! When we came to sit down for dinner she’d laid out an envelope with our numbers on each of them and had written a note for each of us, along with the bracelet. It was pretty incredible. For me, I feel extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to work on our guernsey. This clash guernsey is about wearing the history proudly, acknowledging the progress made and accepting the batten to continue the surge for change. It’s part of Carlton’s history now and captures the moments that will shape our club forever. MEMBERSHIP NO: 39839650

AFLW senior coach Damien Keeping will once again lead the Blues’ women’s team, as the group strives to improve on last year’s performance.
The Blues welcomed three fresh faces into their coaching ranks for the 2018 season, with the appointment of new assistant coaches Jessica Rottura, Nick Rutley and Jack Noble. Heading into his second year at the Club, Jackson Kornberg continues in his assistant coach role, while Graham Burgen moves into his new position as list manager.

DAMIEN KEEPING SENIOR COACH
Before arriving at the Blues, the 43-year-old compiled an impressive list of credentials. This included roles as VWFL Women’s Academy assistant coach, AFL Vic Metro Youth Girls senior assistant coach and Under 18 Calder Cannons TAC Cup line coach. In addition, he also held the role of senior coach of the Western Bulldogs’, when they played an AFL Victoria exhibition game against Melbourne in 2016. “ I’m very lucky to have a wonderful group of assistant coaches. This coaching team has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and most importantly, a real passion for the game.” @DamienKeeping04

As a level two accredited coach, Rutley’s experience and expertise have been a valuable asset for the coaching group in the second season of AFLW. Coaching the senior team at Wandin Football Club in 2017, the 33-year-old has also spent time as a midfield coach at the Calder Cannons (2016) and held development roles at both Box Hill (2015) and Casey Scorpions (2014).
“ The way the team has embraced the entire pre-season has been really exciting – from welcoming new staff and recruits, to their on-field performance around the track. The inclusiveness and commitment by everyone who works at Carlton is by far the best experienced I’ve had at any club I’ve worked at. The AFLW staff across the board are having a great time working together.” @nickrutley
JACKSON KORNBERG ASSISTANT COACH
This will be Kornberg’s second season at the Blues, after signing on as an assistant coach for the inaugural AFLW competition. Before his appointment at Ikon Park, Kornberg was at the Sandringham Dragons Football Club, where he held the role of assistant coach. He has also been an assistant coach for the AFL Victoria Youth Girls, where he was involved in elite training programs. His ability to understand and identify trends in the game will once again make him a valuable resource and asset for the team.
“ I’m really excited to see the growth in the players from 2017 to 2018. As a coaching group, we identified some key areas we needed to improve on from the first season, and the players have been terrific with their readiness to improve and their attention to detail in everything they do. “ The hunger is even greater for year two; the players have come back with a real appetite to learn and improve, which as coaches is what we strive for with our group.” @JacksonK_5

JESSICA ROTTURA ASSISTANT COACH

Rottura made history in 2016 when she became the first female senior coach in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). The Melbourne Grammar teacher continued to make history the following year when she was appointed assistant coach of the first women’s Big V side. Rottura is known for her natural football smarts and ability to mentor young students, while her exceptional communication skills have been very beneficial in relaying messages and game plans.
“ I’ve been delighted by the camaraderie amongst both players and staff, with the Club recognising and celebrating all the personalities within the group as well as football and talent. The individual isn’t lost within the professional practice; instead they’re lauded. As an assistant coach, I’m looking forward to the season proper! Pre-season training is one thing, but the anticipation of game day where we can really show what we can do makes the heart beat a little faster. Working with the defenders, I am excited by a group of girls who are determined and fierce.” @JessVevero
JACK NOBLE ASSISTANT COACH
Noble has spent the last two seasons at Carlton working as a football analyst for the AFL team, women’s team and VFL side. Since beginning his career with Werribee’s VFL team in 2009 – where he spent four seasons – he has worked in a variety of different football roles across all grades. Noble is currently undertaking the level two coaching course.
“ I am excited about the opportunity to coach a group of exceptionally driven athletes, who are doing everything they can on and off the field to help with their development. The opportunity to be involved in the growth and development of these athletes will not only bring with it incredible reward, but also challenges that will enable me to grow as an individual too.” @noblej07

P After leading from the front on field in 2017, claiming the Club’s best and fairest along with All-Australian honours, Carlton’s Brianna Davey will take the reins as skipper for the second season of the AFLW. Inaugural captain Lauren Arnell’s experience will be complemented by the young Sarah Hosking who take up the roles of joint vice-captains for the Blues in 2018. After undertaking an extensive process involving coaches, players and key leaders at the Club, the new-look three-player leadership group was established in January.
