Carlow Arts Festival
10th - 19th June 2011
www.eigsecarlow.ie
WELCOME TO THE 2011 FESTIVAL Despite hard times there are a number of celebrations this year in Carlow and beyond. We celebrate the 220th anniversary of the Barrow navigation system, which flows through Carlow town and county, with a focused programme of events at the scenic Barrow including the grand festival opening procession spectacle and a very exciting water sports weekend (if the Festival Director goes missing during the festival, she may be found swimming in the Barrow!); 2011 also celebrates the Year of Craft in Ireland and we showcase craft in our partnering exhibition with Kilgraney House; Giving special mention and respect to the festival’s many volunteers is highlighted this year through the European Year of Volunteering and we are delighted to have so
many new and loyal returning festival volunteers each year as the festival would not be able to continue without them. We have worked closely with the VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art & George Bernard Shaw Theatre over the year and we are exceptionally blessed to host festival exhibitions and events in such a magnificent centre. Carlow is now the envy of many. We have a huge variety of high quality artists coming to town (and indeed already in town) participating in the 2011 festival. While we provide many events for free, we still have to make ends meet so we would encourage you to maybe try one event this year that you might not normally attend, we guarantee you will enjoy yourself! Living up to our slogan ‘Yours to Enjoy’ we have worked hard this year to put ‘you’ at the
heart of the festival. There are lots of free outdoor events suitable for a family day out, trails around Carlow, games, workshops and general fun. ‘What’s Your Doodle?’ is a new project this year where everyone is invited to partake, regardless of age or ability. Do you doodle when you’re on the telephone or when you’re in a meeting (when you should be listening!)? We want to see your doodles take over Carlow town during the festival! Who knows, maybe we’ll break a new record of covering the town in doodles! We’d like to especially thank Tomasz Knapik whose winning design uses Éigse’s twirl along with the Carlow colours to give us a fresh 2011 festival campaign identity. Congratulations Tomasz! Go on… Enjoy your festival!

His fast, free-wheeling style, fused with an array of offbeat props, makes his act a helter-skelter of a show where the audience are promised the ride of their lives! He has been one of the fastest selling performers at the last 13 Edinburgh Fringe Festivals (becoming the first act to sell 25,000 tickets!), where his sell out shows have attracted Best Headliner Chortle Award in 2007, a nomination for 1998 Perrier Newcomer Award, and the much revered Perrier Award Nomination for his outstanding 2001 show. He was also winner for the 2004 Forth One Fringe Award and continues performing sold out shows throughout Ireland & the UK. Jason hosted the hit TV show Anonymous for four series and The Byrne Ultimatum, both on RTE and The Jason Byrne Show on BBC Radio 2 with appearances in Father Ted, The General, Alice in Wonderland and Class Clowns to name a few. Jason is best known and loved for his stand-up gigs and he is in Carlow for one night only, so get yourself a ticket to Carlow’s hottest comedy gig of the year as Jason is likely to spend most of 2011 wooing Australian audiences.
NEIL HANNON (The Divine Comedy) & THOMAS WALSH (Pugwash) as THE DUCKWORTH LEWIS METHOD
5 MUSIC
............................................................................................................................................
Sunday 19th June | The Tower, Dinn Rí | Doors 8pm | Tickets €25 (Includes free entry to The Foundry)
The Duckworth Lewis Method is an Irish pop group formed by Neil Hannon of ‘The Divine Comedy’ and Thomas Walsh of ‘Pugwash’ and is also the title of the group’s cricket inspired maiden album released in 2009. The album spent 6 weeks in the U.K top 100 reaching the top 40 in its first week. It won numerous end of year ‘best of’ album polls with 3 of the tracks voted in ‘WORD’ magazine as ‘Readers’ Songs of the Year 2009’. In 2010 the album also received nominations for Album of the Year at The Meteors and The Choice Music Prize... but all of this was well and truly surpassed by a nomination for Album of the Year at the 55th Ivor Novello Awards in London. Paolo Nutini took the award that year but announced in his speech that “The Duckworth Lewis Method were the true winners of this award”. Neil Hannon’s talents can be heard on The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Doctor Who, The Runaway Bride and The IT Crowd but Irish audiences will be most familiar with his Father Ted theme music composition (later reworked into The Divine Comedy’s “Songs Of Love”) and My Lovely Horse (which Hannon co-wrote) for Fr. Ted and Fr. Dougal’s Eurosong entry in the much loved A Song For Europe episode. Dubliner, Thomas Walsh is frontman with the band Pugwash. The band signed a five-year deal with XTC’s founding member Andy Partridge’s label Ape House in 2009. From demo recordings made in Walsh’s garden shed studio, one was named Demo of the Year by Irish music magazine Hot Press in 1995. Thomas has worked with a wide range of musicians over the years and has been collaborating with Neil since 2006. The Duckworth Lewis Method don’t tour much and this Carlow gig forms part of a small number of selected gigs this summer in Ireland, so get your tickets fast as this gig will sell out in record time!

Scéal Cáilín is a new show with beautiful puppetry,
Breda’s not lookin’ at all bad, she has certainly lost the weight, there’s no denying that. But Ernie and Evonne’s daughter Imelda is such a beautiful ride of a thing. And Tony thinks he’s James Galway – the man with the ‘golden flute’ - now Billy wants to show them all that he’s James Galway. This night it’ll all change. This night is the big night. From the author of RTE’s Pure Mule, Eugene O’Brien’s play Eden was first directed by Conor McPherson and premiered at the Abbey in 2001 under the Abbey directorship of Ben Barnes. The play went on to win Best New Play at the Irish Times Theatre Awards and Best New Play for the Stewart Parker Awards then transferred to London’s West End. It has been translated and performed around the world and was turned into an award-winning film in 2008. Ben Barnes, Director of Theatre Royal Waterford, returns to Eden and returns to the GB Shaw (following a sell out success with the Theatre Royal team’s production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane) with this powerful story of an ordinary relationship on an extraordinary weekend. Show contains strong language and adult content. Post show discussion: The GB Shaw Theatre will host Ben Barnes and the cast of Eden in a post-show discussion after the performance on June 11th.

HAUNTED CARLOW - Book Launch
..............................................................................................
Saturday 11th June | The Hub | 9pm | €10 This collection of stories is the result of exhaustive research as Cormac Strain and Danny Carthy relentlessly searched for Carlow’s hidden Ghost stories, digging out people (no pun intended!) with a story to tell - a true story that often hadn’t been told even to close friends - the search was long and exhausting but fruitful. Old myths and stories from yesteryear weren’t the objective, finding new, true and as yet untold stories was. Modern tales of poltergeists in housing estates, phantom voices, ghostly nannies, white ladies and banshees - this isn’t the stuff of oft repeated folklore; these are freshly discovered ghostly tales from the people of Carlow. Just what was staying in Brown Street? Who is the White Lady? Who did Carlow students unwittingly end up sharing a house with? Just who was that old lady watching over children? Join Dr. Ciarán O’Keeffe from British paranormal reality television series Most Haunted for a paranormal talk and of course the launch of Haunted Carlow. Ideal for the paranormal enthusiast, local historian or anyone who just enjoys a scary story. Seats are limited.

A Space for Learning
The Éigse Carlow Arts Festival Open Submission returns this summer after a year’s absence. Representing a small selection of the country’s talent, submissions were accepted under the theme “Constellations” a suggestion towards the varied ways that artists work to gather and illustrate ideas, and also the ways in which their works are combined for exhibition. This year’s open submissions have been selected and curated by Emma-Lucy O’Brien, Curatorial Fellow at VISUAL. Held in two of VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art’s main galleries, the Studio and Link, “Constellations” promises a lively and diverse presentation of works by emerging and established Irish talent.
As part of the Open Submission, one artist from the 059 area code has been selected for a solo show in the Lobby Gallery at VISUAL. Bridget O’Gorman’s work has been chosen for this space and represents an artist in the locality whose practice deserves to be recognised and celebrated for its sensitive handling of ideas and objects.
An exhibition from the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) showcasing the top 10 designs from A Space for Learning, a nationwide competition for architects & architecture graduates to work with Transition Year students on the design of educational spaces. The exhibition features unique models, films, drawings and even furniture, created by the teams to illustrate their ideas and to raise public awareness of the importance of school design. A Space for Learning is the inaugural project of the IAF’s education programme and featured more than 1,500 students in 90 schools working with 120 architects around the country. The IAF placed architects in schools in 23 counties including Carlow’s St. Mary’s Academy CBS working with Keith Graham of FORM architecture. You can view participants’ ideas, images and experiences at www.aspaceforlearning.blogspot. com/ A Space for Learning is funded through the Environment Fund of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and additionally funded by the Department of Education and Skills and the Arts Council.

SCHOOLS / OUTREACH PROJECTS
.............................................................................................................................................................................................. Éigse loves working with Carlow schools and community groups and we’re always enthusiastic about growing and expanding our programme each year to invest in our children and our community’s future. With a special focus this year on the natural environment and especially the River Barrow, Éigse have developed outreach programmes to engage with the children, schools and community of Carlow to share in their learning of the joy, excitement and mystery of the world that we live in. In our ongoing effort to keep the spirit of the Éigse festival alive beyond the 10 days in June, we have provided activities, workshops, lectures and projects for the children and community of Carlow all year round.
ÉIGSE SCHOOLS AMBASSADORS
........................................................................................... The Schools Ambassadors programme was developed to engage the interest of Carlow primary school children and their families in the workings of the Éigse Carlow Arts Festival. The huge year round effort that goes into planning and organising the festival provides great opportunity for children and adults alike to learn and get involved. Two children from each participating school are invited to a number of team meetings where we tell them all about the life of a festival and what goes on ‘behind the scenes’. The Ambassadors programme has a view to developing the children’s interest in the Éigse festival and all it entails and giving them the opportunity to share their stories with their peers in a classroom presentation setting or indeed their families at home. The children receive specially created Éigse Ambassador Packs to take home with them to keep fresh in their mind all the exciting things they have seen and learned in our care.
ÉIGSE ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT PROJECT In conjunction with Merck Sharp & Dohme
................................................................................................................ The environment, education and community form an integral part of the ethos and vision of the Éigse Carlow Arts Festival so in conjunction with MSD we have developed a project to benefit all three. Again targeting Carlow primary schools children will learn about the natural environment, why it’s important to preserve it and how we can do that in our schools and homes with a focus on water as a source of energy, drawing on examples such as the River Barrow and its inhabitants. The hope is that each pupil will feel confident in their knowledge and environmental enhancement capabilities and go back to spread the word throughout their schools and homes encouraging each family, class and pupil to make sustainable changes. From this each school submits a project focusing on environmental changes within their school.
............................................................................................................................. A continuation and development of the programme from 2010, the Young Critics Forum leaves no stone unturned (or no turn unstoned!). A cast of young critics from local schools are tasked by children’s writer Dave Donoghue to critique the festival and its event from their own perspective. Workshops are held in advance of the festival and again at the end of the festival where a range of Éigse events will be taken apart and scrutinised. In 2011 the young critics will also learn to preview and interview artists in advance of the festival. The Carlow Nationalist, KCLR 96FM and the Festival Director will be actively involved in giving the children as much information as they can soak in about the festival and continued support about their roles as critics. The reviews will be printed in the Carlow Nationalist shortly after the festival. Keep an eye out to see what our young critics make of the 2011 festival!
VISUAL ARTS SCHOOLS Interpretive talks & workshops
........................................................................ Éigse and VISUAL present gallery tours for both primary and secondary schools. Tours can accommodate a maximum number of 36 students and teachers are required to remain with tours at all times. Tours during Éigse are free and must be booked in advance at box office. There is limited availability so tours will be offered one class per school, where spare capacity allows, schools can be offered a second tour for another class.
ÉIGSE BEAG in conjunction with Fairgreen Shopping Centre
CARLOW SILVER SONG
Working with our local partners, Fairgreen Shopping Centre, we have developed a series of mini Éigse weekends outside of the regular festival dates to keep the spirit of Éigse alive in Carlow all year round. The mini festivals will kick off in April with street entertainment and workshops to increase the sense of activity and excitement in the town centre. Keep your eyes peeled in the Fairgreen Shopping Centre and the Carlow Nationalist for details of the next Éigse Beag event. It might just open your eyes to BIG things!
Carlow Silver Song is an engagement project developed by Éigse and Cormiosa Choir to encourage older people from the Carlow region to blow the cobwebs off their voice and belt out a tune. The aim is enjoyment and the project will culminate in a showcase performance at the 2011 Culture Night on September 23rd. The project is initiated to empower people to rise to the artistic and physical challenges of using their voice and to rediscover the joy of singing so dust off those vocal chords and show the young ones how it’s done!

Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth A2.4 billion directly a year.
The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, for 2011 is a A65.2 million, that’s around 80 cents a week for every household. So, at the end of your next great festival experience, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at
