PORTFOLIO
SELECTED WORK 2020-2023
Hello there! I am J. Carlos Gomez Garza, an Interior Design student at George Brown College, based in Toronto. I really enjoy designing beautiful and functional interior spaces. My professional goals are to collaborate with other designers and be recognized for my work. I have current knowledge of residential, healthcare, retail and commercial design, 2D and 3D modelling software, The Ontario Building Code, Accessibility Standards and sustainability.
I believe that staying authentic is key in the interior design world; is it important not to get caught up in the nonsense and to stay true to yourself. As an interior Design technology student, I have learned that in a team every player must be committed to the game to ensure our visions become a reality.
This portfolio will display my most recent work

INVICTUS
Date: 2023 (Semester 6)
Type: Mixed-use Project
Class: Tech & Studio
Software used: AutoCAD, Sketchup
Invictus is a place where those in need can seek shelter. Men of any age and background can find solace within the facility’s walls. Invictus offers private emergency shelters for individuals or families, constructed from up-cycled shipping containers. There are three options: family dwellings, individual dwellings, and accessible housing. Each dwelling is equipped with amenities like a bedroom and bathroom for individual men, fathers, and their children. The space overlooks a communal healing common area filled with greenery, providing a sense of home for those who need it most. The shelter is shielded from external pressures, and indoor lighting cycles through daily sun rhythms to create a more natural and calming environment. Just steps away from the dwellings is a space to grow, providing the services needed to assist those within the center. With multiple offices, there is ample room for rotating professionals to provide healing opportunities such as:
The kitchen is more than just a space for preparing meals,it is a place where people gather to embark on a culinary journey together, united by the pursuit of a delicious and satisfying outcome. This community kitchen was intentionally crafted with that communal spirit in mind.
Featuring open counter tops that invite individuals to observe, learn, and engage with one another, this space serves as a hub for culinary exploration and social interaction. From interactive classes to captivating conversations, the possibilities are endless all centered around the creation of truly exceptional cuisine.
One of the primary goals of Invictus was to provide men with a space where they could begin their healing journey with privacy. To achieve this, we implemented 16 housing units within the facility, giving men and their families a place they can call home. The units were made out of repurposed storage containers, a sustainable and practical solution to our housing needs.
Each unit is furnished with a pull-out couch, a full-size bed, and a fully accessible washroom. We believe that those taking shelter within the units should have the freedom to decorate it as they see fit, to create a sense of belonging and ownership.
The cafe is a lush oasis of greenery, where the air is alive with the fragrance of fresh food and the buzz of conversation. Earthy materials abound in this natural sanctuary, with detailed stonework wrapping around the space like a comforting embrace. As your eyes roam across the arched recessed shelving that cascades along the west wall, you feel a sense of calm wash over you, carried on the gentle flow of the cafe’s atmosphere, leading you to the inviting bar at the heart of it all.
Being part of a community is also incredibly valuable. It gives us a sense of belonging, connection, and purpose. When we surround ourselves with like-minded individuals who share our values and beliefs, we can find strength and support in times of need. We can learn from each other, inspire each other, and grow together.

The objective of this project is to design an office/ showroom space that will be located in Torontvo, ON ( Dufferin and Newfoundland Rd) in the parking lot 2. The total area of the building is 500w4 square meters, the total square footage is to be divided into a factory and the office following the client’s requirements, concept design and the overall functionally of the space. Employee and costumers’ comfort and productivity are heavily influenced by the office design, layout and space usage; for that reason, the space is to be distributed in different departments to achieved the goal of costumer satisfaction as well as to encourage teamwork.
On the East side of the building will be the factory from Knoll furniture manufacturer that will work as an extension of such company for customization and engraving of one of the kind pieces of furniture.
The new knoll office and showroom furniture manufacturer is located inToronto, ON ( Dufferin and Newfoundland Rd). This design will be created around the concept of “pathways”.
A pathway assist with easy navigation and easy access to every part without getting lost. It’s a correlation of life and one’s journey as it reveals an identity, including strengths, weaknesses, talents and ambitions.

SURREY-MAJESTIC HOME
Date: 2021 (Semester 2)
Type: Residential
Class: Tech & Studio
Software used: AutoCAD, Sketchup
This project was to complete a residential design for a single-family detached home on a redevelopment parcel of land, meeting the zoning and home builder’s requirements. I initiated with zoning and spatial plan matrix, once the statistics were completed, I elaborated a bubble diagram for a rough overall layout of the house that consisted of 2 storeys.
The next step was to develop conceptual design drawings, I added furniture to the floor plans and kept adding details to the constructions drawings. Further action was the application of the Ontario Building Code, I prepared a review to my design meeting the minimum structural, general practice application and life safety system requirements. Lastly, I developed permit drawings for my final submission with a 3D rendering made in SketchUp.

TIMELESS LORE BOOTH
Date: 2021 (Semester 4)
Type: Booth Design
Class: Studio
Software used: AutcoCAD, Sketchup, Lumion
In the Anishinaabe language and teaching, the beaver represents - Wisdom. The beaver represents wisdom because a beaver’s natural gift is survival by altering its environment. The beaver is nature’s engineer, earliest forester, first hydrologist and original industry - the beaver has a significant impact on the environment. Our group chose wisdom and as a group, we concluded and chose a form like the infinity shape as wisdom isn’t just a passing of knowledge but how wisdom is timeless, neverending and evolving.
The concept is based on the beaver and its environment that represents this teaching. This design incorporates the colours of nature, a beaver’s home (beaver’s dam) and its surrounding: brown, green and blue into our design along with elements of what beavers use in construction to build their habitat - logs, wood, trees and branches. The shape of our booth is in an infinity shape, to represent that wisdom is timeless and endless.
HOW IT WORKS
The featured wall (to add experience to people entering our booth), has Interactive blocks where people 30 years and older can enter one side of our booth and write down advice, teachings and any knowledge they have experienced so far in life to pass down to the younger and future generations. On the other side of the booth, people 30 years and younger will be able to see from the other side and take on this information. These blocks can be flipped to the other side of the booth as this is the passing down of information and knowledge. These are the building blocks of life to survival. Hence, the concept of the beaver experiencing life and survival is related to us humans - we are the “beavers” entering the booth as we represent and carry wisdom on our path to survival in life

PAVILLION PARAMETERIC DESIGN
Date: 2023 (Semester 6)
Type: Parametric Design
Class: Concentration in Comput. Design Software used: Rhino, Grasshopper, Vray
For this project I designed a pavilion surface using Grasshopper and Rhinoceros. One of the main considerations I had while designing this structure was the location, the park. One of the main challenges I had was to reflect my ideas into a software that is algorithm based. But with the skills learned during classes I was able to portrait my concept. Once the 3D model was created in Grasshopper, I switched to Rhino to add materials and adjust small details, such as the orientation of the structure. For the final render, I used Vray and added some visual element such as people and vegetation to enrich the view of the scene.
