Academy music director and violin superstar Joshua Bell play-directs Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto in E minor; the electric Martin Fröst is soloist for Copland’s Clarinet Concerto; and in one of the highlights of the 2016/17 classical calendar, the incomparable Murray Perahia celebrates the genius of Ludwig van Beethoven in ‘Perahia Plays Beethoven’, performing all five of the brilliant German composer’s piano concertos.

November sees Miloš, ‘the hottest guitarist in the world’ (The Sunday Times), journey from Bach to Beatles. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra joins up with soloists including pianist Sunwook Kim and cellist Johannes Moser, and presents symphonies by Bruckner, Mahler and Elgar. Colston Hall is also part of Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Monteverdi 450 celebrations during which he’ll be bringing three of the composer’s operas to Bristol in Spring 2017.

ver the last decade the Zurich International Concert Series has presented nearly 100 concerts from over 40 orchestras. This years, it welcomes back nine of those orchestras including the Mariinsky Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Tonkünstler, Dresden Philharmonic and Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The Spanish Symphony Orchestra and Norwegian Chamber Orchestra make their series debuts. The 2016-17 series also sees an exciting variety of soloists joining the orchestras, including five previous finalists and winners of BBC Young Musician of the Year: Natalie Clein (9 November), Alison Balsom (28 November), Alexander Sitkovetsky (28 February), Emma Johnson (2 March) and Freddy Kempf (18 May). Guitarist Craig Ogden joins forces with the Spanish Symphony Orchestra on 4 October for a Spanish-inspired programme. Edward Gardner conducts the Bergen Philharmonic in works by Grieg, Elgar and Bartók. The Brussels Philharmonic and chief conductor Stéphane Denève appear twice in the series, on 29 September and 9 April, presenting programmes which explore the works of lesser-known contemporary French composer Guillaume Connesson.

his September, Aleksandar Markovic makes his debut with a sumptuously-staged revival of Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. Perfectly poised between comedy and pathos, it supplies an evening of gorgeous music, delightful costumes and romantic intrigue. Discover the dramatic tale of Billy Budd, a young sailor who radiates beauty and goodness, and the failure of Captain Vere to save him from the destructive forces of envy. This gripping new production is made up of a stellar cast of today’s leading Britten interpreters, including Roderick Williams in the title role and Alan Oke as Captain Vere. Puccini fans can experience two intense operas in one evening of vintage Puccini as Il tabarro and Suor Angelica – two of the three Il trittico pieces – are performed in a double-bill in which themes of jealousy, desire, sin and redemption are all explored with theatrical effect. Soprano Anne Sophie Duprels stars in Suor Angelica, while Giselle Allen takes on the role of Giorgetta in Il tabarro, alongside David Butt Philip as Luigi and Ivan Inverardi as Michele. Opera North tours to Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Salford Quays and more in 2016-17.

livier Award-winning opera company English Touring Opera (ETO) and its highly praised period orchestra The Old Street Band invite you to discover the best of Venetian opera in this season of works inspired by the City of Masks’ dolce vita, originality and brilliance. And, in a first for the company, English Touring Opera will also tour a new, semi-staged production of JS Bach’s St John Passion, sung in partnership with over 30 cathedral, community and gospel choirs, and performed in some of the most iconic cathedrals and concert halls around the country. Directed by James Conway and conducted by Jonathan Peter Kenny, it tours nationally from October until December 2016.

n the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales’s 2016-17 season they’ll be exploring some of the great stories in classical music, from Stravinsky’s interpretations of Russian folk tales, to Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé set in ancient Greece and JS Bach’s St John Passion. Principal conductor Thomas Søndergård returns to continue his Mahler cycle with the composer’s intense Sixth Symphony, and new principal guest conductor Xian Zhang joins for Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. And on home ground in BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff, the orchestra celebrates three influential Welsh composers in a concert series entitled Welsh Foundations.

OZART 250, the ambitious 27-year exploration and contextualisation of Mozart’s music, comes into its element this season as Classical Opera celebrates the 250th anniversary of the 11-year-old composer’s first stage works. Under the direction of Ian Page, the company will present new productions of The First Commandment (Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots), sung in English translation, and Apollo et Hyacinthus. Both productions will be directed by Thomas Guthrie. Three concerts at the Wigmore Hall in London also offer the chance to hear Haydn’s La canterina, a retrospective of 1767, and Kristian Bezuidenhout playing Mozart’s first four keyboard concertos.

he Pelléas Trilogy is a three-year exploration of playwright Maurice Maeterlinck’s drama through the music of three composers with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, music director Louis Langrée and director James Darrah. Part I: Smoke (2015) featured Schoenberg’s interpretation of this evocative tale of love, jealousy and heartbreak. Part II: Water (30 September – 1 October at Cincinnati’s Taft Theatre), will feature Fauré’s interpretation – incidental music with theatre and spoken word. Part III: Stone will take place in autumn 2017 with Debussy’s opera, and will be part of the CSO’s grand re-opening of the renovated, historic Music Hall.

From Bach and Tchaikovsky to Gershwin and Penderecki, the season spotlights classics old and new, opening with celebrated violinist Joshua Bell. The M&T Bank Classics Series features a Tchaikovsky Festival including many of his most beloved works. The series includes lots of Beethoven and the Brahms Requiem, but also music less often heard like Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast and orchestral highlights from Wagner’s Ring cycle. The Buffalo Philharmonic calls Kleinhans Music Hall home – a National Historic Landmark designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen that combines elegant simplicity with vibrant acoustics. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) and JoAnn Falletta have released 37 recordings worldwide – this season performing and recording music by Kodály. ith the 2016/17 season, the future of the TSO looks brighter than ever,’ says TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian. ‘A brilliant roster of guest artists along with our unique programming offers something for all the senses.’ The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s 2016/17 season is an all-star slate, with performances from soprano Renée Fleming, violinist Itzhak Perlman, pianist Yuja Wang, conductor Gianandrea Noseda and more. Concert programmes range from the classical masterworks of Beethoven, Mozart, and Mahler to the 13th annual New Creations Festival – curated this year by composer Owen Pallett and featuring genre-bending performances by vocalist Tanya Tagaq and violinist James Ehnes – to three film screenings with live orchestral accompaniment. Enhanced by ancillary events such as informative chats, lobby activities, and post-concert parties, TSO concerts provide a uniquely immersive experience. Also in 2016/17, the TSO will celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, showcasing commissions and collaborations with orchestras nationwide that pay homage to Canada’s rich musical past, present, and future.
