Feature Story

Meet the Hands of Northwest Reno:

A Family Story of Compassion, Community and Opportunity By Carlie Partridge

W

endy and Adam Hand have raised their four children in Northwest Reno. As a family, they love exploring the local nature, going to Lake Tahoe’s beaches, kayaking, hiking and watching the Sierra sunsets. Originally from California, Wendy came to Reno in 1989 to escape the traffic and hurried lifestyle. She works as Physical Therapist for Physical Therapy Partners and for Jerry Jackson Physical Therapy. Adam grew up in Carson City and attended UNR for both his undergraduate and graduate studies. He now works as Vice President of Quality Control for Granite Construction. “Adam and I both love the outdoors and what this area offers. We bought our first house in the area to be able to go to Roy Gomm Elementary, because we’d heard such amazing things about the inclusive kindergarten program there.” All of their children would go to Roy Gomm as they grew up. Cody, 21, Lindsey, 19, Chelsea, 17 and Karly, 15 all grew up immersed in the local community among the friends and neighbors that make Caughlin Ranch their home. Cody graduated last June from RHS, works in the local community and holds a second degree black belt in martial arts, working towards his third degree. Lindsey also graduated from RHS last year and loved her first year at Gonzaga University, where 4

she was active as a volunteer at Title 1 schools and also worked as an assistant editor at One World magazine. Her passions include hiking, guitar and being in nature. Chelsea Hand has a strong faith in her generation’s ability to work together for a better world after spending a week at an Intelsponsored science and engineering fair this spring. “I was inspired by all the brilliant high school students from all around the world,” says Chelsea, who is entering her senior year at Reno High School where she plays soccer and lacrosse. She also volunteers for the RAVE organization, a non-profit that provides activities and respite for the families of special needs children. Karly, the youngest Hand sibling, will attend Reno High School as a sophomore next year just as her older siblings did. “She’ll be paving her own path after following her 3 older siblings,” says Wendy. Karly played soccer and ran track last year, enjoying both sports. She also volunteers through Rotary and enjoys time with family and friends. Local Support for Special Needs “We absolutely love the schools we’ve been a part of,” says Wendy. “They’re wonderful and we’ve known so many incredible teachers.” Wendy explains that their family’s involvement with July 2014

the local schools and community has been unique in part due to having a child with special needs. Cody, their eldest, has Down syndrome, and Wendy says it’s allowed them to truly see the best in the people around them. “Having a child with special needs has molded our lives in so many positive ways,” says Wendy. “Our girls have grown into incredibly caring, compassionate people because of Cody. We’ve seen how the people around us interact with and accept Cody, and we’ve been blessed with some of the most amazing teachers and therapists along our path.” Wendy says that Cody’s experience since kindergarten in inclusive classes has been a journey shared by his teachers and mentors, including his occupational Therapist Saundra Gumfory, who worked with him from the time he was 6 weeks old through age 11 and remains involved in his life. Cody’s school experience was also shaped by special education teacher Kristin Lewandowski, who began the inclusive kindergarten classes that Cody attended. She’s still involved with the Hand Family and continues to provide support and ideas for Cody’s continuing

educational and vocational path. Community Connections After graduating from Reno High School, Cody’s vocational path led him to his current work at Walden’s Coffee Shop and at the Gardenshop Nursery on Mayberry. Wendy explains that finding work for Cody was a process that included his enrollment in vocational courses and preparation for the work world. “We are so pleased with Walden’s and the Gardenshop, two local businesses that really stepped up to offer Cody these amazing opportunities—to have a paying job and be an adult contributing to his community,” says Wendy. She also appreciates these businesses’ willingness to hire and mentor Cody. “He’s working hard and aims to improve on the things his bosses note. I also know that many people in our community are visiting these places to see and visit with Cody. It’s heartwarming because I remember when Cody was young, we would go visit places where I knew a young gentleman with Down’s syndrome was working. It was inspiring and reassuring to see that anything is possible, and now Cody is in

that role for his own community thanks to the wonderful management and employees at Walden’s and the Gardenshop,” says Wendy. “When it was time for Cody to work, we went through a long process of applying and sending resumes. When we found these opportunities for Cody so close for home, we felt extremely fortunate. He gets to see people he knows and interact with customers while building his workplace skills. The management at Walden’s Coffee Shop actually created this position specifically for Cody, who works when the shop is at its busiest,” says Wendy. “We love that the local community has been so supportive of Cody’s new roles and we can’t thank them enough.” A Future in Reno and a Message of Inspiration The Hands look forward to their future in the Caughlin ranch community among their longtime friends. “We would love to see public transportation all around the McCarran loop so that—in the future— Cody could get around more independently.” Wendy also says that when she’s not driving her kids to and from their activities and appointments, she loves walking with friends through Caughlin and running the ditch trails with her dog. Adam Hand can be found enjoying his newest hobby of wine making as well as hunting and fishing. “This community has been so accepting and supportive. We’d like to be an example for others in Reno who are raising a child with special needs. The journey can be rough at times, but it’s so rewarding, especially with such positive influence from neighbors, friends and local professionals.”

A Future for Vino in Reno

N

evada Vines and Wines is a volunteer-based non-profit with over 180 members. The group was initiated to promote viniculture and winemaking in Northern Nevada. They are partnering with individuals, groups and the UNR to promote their vision. In the spring of 2013, their group of dedicated volunteers planted 1800 Riesling wine vines at UNR’s main station farm. Their ultimate goal at the farm is to plant additional acres with different varieties and to establish a commercial winery with substantial proceeds going back to the university. The non-profit envisions a future in which jobs are created surrounding a burgeoning wine industry. Nevada Vines and Wines is devoted to supporting Nevada wine lovers and entrepreneurs alike, providing resources to connect backyard vineyard enthusiasts with researchers and valuable consulting services. Their vision includes eventually providing scholarship funds for students to study viniculture at the UNR and foster the widespread cultivation of vineyards in Nevada’s unique and very specific growing conditions.

The World’s Eyes will be on Reno during the Reno-Tahoe Open

L

ater this month the PGA TOUR’s Reno-Tahoe Open celebrates its 16th birthday, and what a party it will be! Beyond having the world’s best golfers make their way to our community to compete in one of the world’s most stunning settings, Nicklaus’ signature-designed Montreux Golf & Country Club, the tournament promoters also ensure the event offers something to appeal to every member of the family. The event also offers a healthy economic boost to the area. From a bounce house for kids to a wine walk for adults, the Reno-Tahoe Open is an event that the community has increasingly embraced over the years. Attendance over the past five years is up over 100% due in part to these fan enhancements and to the growing appeal of the players who compete at Montreux. Players like John Daly, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Padraig Harrington and Camilo Villegas have all recently competed in the event, and many of today’s brightest stars on tour actually started their careers in Reno. You may recognize names like Adam Scott, Jason Day and Luke Donald all on the roster of former competitors. Up-and-comer number one ranked amateur Patrick Rodgers has committed to playing in this month’s tournament, giving fans the opportunity to see tomorrow’s top athletes today. Enjoying Golf, Honoring Local Heroes Beyond amazing golf and fan-favorites like the Pack Pavilion and Food Trucks, the tournament boasts new additions in 2014. This year the tournament offers an enhanced salute to troops and first responders in the Nature’s Bakery Heroes Hangout, a luxury suite on the 9th green of Montreux featuring hosted food and beverages for the military. First Responders are also invited to enjoy this special venue. This year alongside the military the Reno-Tahoe Open and Nature’s Bakery invite police, fire and EMT are invited to enjoy the PGA TOUR from the comfort of this hospitality tent from July 31-August 3. This tent will be an exciting addition to existing programs such as Women’s Day presented by Barrick Gold taking place on July 27 or the Patriots’ Luncheon benefiting the Veterans Guest House coming up on July 29. With so much happening within one short week,

it’s a whirlwind of activity that the tournament team and its hundreds of volunteers are looking forward to providing later this month, with key competition days being Thursday, July 31 through Sunday, August 3. Putting Reno on the International Map The tournament offers a worldwide platform for the Reno area. The presence of the PGA TOUR partnering with Reno offers major benefits to the area. First, the international television exposure to over 220 countries with more than 12 hours of air time on the Golf Channel will reach a worldwide audience—and don’t’ forget about reruns. The positive promotion that accompanies the PGA Tour showcases the spectacular landscapes of the Sierras and the rolling hills of Montreux is something Reno can be proud of. Above and beyond this positive branding opportunity for the community, there is an economic benefit to hosting the PGA tour to the tune of $15-$20 million. From hotel rooms to restaurants, the tour will add to the area’s bottom line. The Reno-Tahoe Open Foundation will also further benefit the local community. To date, the Reno-Tahoe Open has given back over $2.85 million to area charities, a number that is anticipated to reach the $3 million mark this year. Be a part of the action and see for yourself what the rest of the world will watch from their living rooms. Come to the Reno-Tahoe Open July 31 to August 3 at Montreux, where tickets are just $20 (kids under age 15 and military are free) with sponsorships still available. For more information, visit www.RenoTahoeOpen.com or call 775.322.3900.

Am I Swinging the Right Clubs? By Brian Gilchrist

W

hether you are planning to one day play on the tour yourself, or if you just want bragging rights over the friends and family you golf with, GolfTEC is a great place to shop if you’re looking to improve your game. Important to point out is that GolfTEC is a privately owned and operated franchise located on South Virginia here in Reno. Owner, Jay Jilot came highly recommended to me by a business colleague and fellow golfer. What impressed me most about the facility were the people and the cohesive and combined knowledge they have to offer as a team. The next thing that really intrigued me was the state of the art technology designed not only to find a simple fundamental swing flaw, but also to find out which clubs you should be using and which adjustments need to be made. Jay set me up with the very capable golf coach and club fitter Gaylen Christean to go through GolfTEC’s 60 minute swing evaluation. The session is designed to diagnose your golf swing using several technologies and approaches. In a session with Gaylen I would quickly learn how much more there is to a golf swing and choosing clubs than I’d known. Not only would he analyze my current set and give me pointers, but he would be providing me with a map towards mastery. I learned that golf equipment is extremely important for improving my game. GolfTEC’s approach includes attention to body posture and body type including providing ideal measurements for clubs. From hand length to the length of knuckles to the floor, certain measurements are key to getting the optimum fit. They also use a state of the art unbiased club recommendation software, which uses the top of the line launch monitor that looks at things like optimum launch angle, spin, and

10

more to provide you with the best club for your particular swing. Not only do small details like the grip have a big impact on the swing and ball flight, but things like spin and launch that we never really think about have that much more effect which is where these guys go above and beyond. Gaylen helped me find my ideal club by watching my swing and noticing details like my lie angle which is where the heel or toe of the club contacts the ground, and getting not only the shaft angle but also the club head speed in motion. All of this combines to provide a profile that allows GolfTEC to create my best possible club, personally customized to the specifics of my swing. The experts at GolfTEC know the game inside out and they’re at the top of their game as far as technology goes. They can help you with driver fittings, wedge fittings or iron fittings as part of their comprehensive club fitting service. In just an hour with the GolfTEC experts, I learned a tremendous amount about my swing and finally found a club that will be a true ally on the course. This type of advantage can help me engage more with my passion for golf. Perhaps most impressive was the raw improvement that we could see not only through the results of the shot, but we could clearly see a vast improvement in the fundamental execution of my swing from the beginning of the session to the end. It truly helps when you can break down your swing frame by frame on an interactive video screen. There was way too much movement and flex in my knees swaying my body from centered to a position where my hips were lagging slightly behind the swing. As soon as I kept my lower half still as Gaylen instructed, my hips opened much more naturally and freely. I also had much more control over the club head and was able to induce more power turning off the inside of my rear foot. I came away understanding specific elements of my swing I had previously been unaware of. The experience was professional, enjoyable and profoundly educational. I could go on and on about the improvements that I have made personally, but the truth is that we all have unique adjustments that are needed within our own game and most likely within our own bag. With minor adjustments to my technique and a huge upgrade on equipment, I finally have a full set of clubs fit to my body. Now I can just swing and let the club do the work rather than trying to adjust my stance and swing to fit my clubs.

The Blue Star Mothers of America: Military Family Support in the Truckee Meadows

I

am Paula Fleming, 2nd VP for Truckee Meadows NV#3 Blue Star Mothers of America. I have been a member of Blue Star Mothers since my son, Reed High School graduate Josh Tash joined the US Army in October of 2004. A Mother’s Story After the events of 9/11/2001, my son Josh quit his job as a manager of Walgreens and joined the United States Army. He immediately went off to boot camp, after which he and his family were stationed in Ft. Drum NY while attached to the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army. By 2006, Josh had become a medic and was sent to Kandahar Afghanistan for 1 year to work in a Hospital there assisting the wounded Americans and Nationals. He and his crew worked 14 hour days assisting the Doctors and Nurses, driving ambulances from the helicopters to the hospitals and filling in where needed on convoys that went out into the desert from the base. He led a medical clinic pharmacy in Iraq and became a medic in Yakima. He is currently with the Washington State Army National Guard in Yakima serving as their Sergeant First Class unit commander. those serving. At the inaugural ball for George W. Bush in Reno, I met the Blue Star Mothers and decided to start a local chapter. Who are the Blue Star Mothers? The Blue Star Mothers began in 1942 with just a handful of concerned mothers. The Blue Star Mothers became a permanent organization when they reached 1,000 members across the country. In June of 1960 the organization was chartered by congress. Mothers volunteered throughout the tough times of World War II. They worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages for soldiers and were a working part of homeland security during war times. Local Moms Serving Troops Our local Truckee Meadows Chapter currently has 65 member mothers. We currently assist over 60 US Troops, 25 of which are deployed around the world. Our work involves working with the City of Sparks in presenting the Hometown Hero Banners seen in downtown Sparks between the Nugget and the Movie Theatre. These banners represent our children, young men and women who lived and went to school locally and who chose to answer the call to serve their country. You can find us at most Military related events in the community providing information on Military support and encouraging military mothers to join our ranks. We have built homes for our wounded thru Homes for our Troops and Defenders of Freedom. We fed 5,000 US Marines as they traveled thru the Reno area in July of 2011 for their annual training.

We also attend the funerals of fallen servicemen and honor their families. We work with the casualty officer to ensure the family has support both during and after the service. The 1st Gold Star Banner I presented, my boy had just deployed for the 1st time. This is a labor of love. An Invitation for The Good Life Readers We invite you to get involved by writing letters of support and building up the morale of our troops as they continue to be deployed and be separated from their families in Reno. Your letters are treasured by our troops, some of whom carry them with them for the duration of their deployments. We gratefully appreciate your contribution of a supportive note. Real Estate Update

It literally takes no time and minimal effort. By Mike Wood, Real Estate Expert

A

nd if you did it consistently and could get others to do it consistently, everyone’s quality of life would improve. You don’t have to change your schedule to accommodate it or wear a particular type of clothing or shoe. There is no monthly subscription fee to worry about and you definitely won’t wake up sore from it.

the amount of people that waive, smile, say anything like “good morning”, hold doors for others.

The funny thing is, it’s so basic that we did it as children and have somehow lost the ability/desire to do it so readily as adults.

I showed houses this last week in 2 different neighborhoods in the old southwest of Reno. Each of those homes were surrounded by neighbors that had lived there over 20 years. You just don’t see that very often anymore. Neighbors saw me pull up with clients and came out to tell me how great the neighborhoods were. Quick to say hi, smiling, full of pride and saying “if you have any questions, just ask”. They were so nice to my clients that my clients were calling them by name when we were done.

I’ve noticed a decline in the people that do it in Reno over the last couple of years. Especially when they are driving. Everyone’s in such a hurry to “get there”, they forget how important this is. So what’s so basic and easy that you almost have to try not to do that is such a community changer? BE NICE I don’t know if it is lack of self esteem, a poor environment in which some were raised or just plain ignorance, but too many people in our society are just not nice. I’m not oblivious to the changes in the world around us and I know that Reno/Sparks is a very small (for the time being) community. But in the last 10 years, I have seen a decline in

I saw this happen in Sacramento in the 80’s and can tell you that when we stop being nice to each other, we jeopardize our sense of community. People stop looking out for each other or caring for one another.

We expect the businesses that we shop with to have friendly and courteous employees, that’s the mark of “excellent customer service”. Why don’t we demand the same of ourselves? Be nice to each other, it will come back tenfold. Or, you can just be miserable…….your choice. - Article is a Paid Advertorial -
