THE RETURN OF THE CRAFTSMAN In an age of ephemeral electronics and outsourced manufacturing, there are signs that we long for the enduring values of craftsmanship. From traditional Japanese joinery to Italian furniture to rare denim, we are fascinated by the handmade – because the stories behind our products are more important than ever. by Justin McGuirk

One of the paradoxes of the hyper-modern, fast-paced metropolis is the return of craft. Look around you and you’ll see that the slow way of doing things, the time-honoured world of craftsmanship, is resurgent. It comes at you in flashes and subliminal messages: in a shop window, in the pages of a magazine, lining up for an artisanal coffee or a craft beer. Hand-made, hand-stitched,

6 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11

hand-blown and hand-crafted. The hand is big business again. In a world of immaterial labour, dominated by email and the internet, we value the hand-made more and more. As we grow increasingly critical of our disposable consumer culture, we find reassurance in the values of craft. We want to know where our

products come from and who made them. We want to know the stories behind our objects because those stories satisfy our longing for authenticity. Increasingly, this means celebrating the process of making. For a long time, the messy process of craftsmanship was hidden from view, leaving the perfectly finished

product to shine, as if it had appeared by magic. But now the advertisements and the magazine articles celebrate the tools, the skills and the sawdust. Companies that have made things the same way for 100 years are opening the doors of their workshops for the first time. The making of the product has become almost more compelling than the product itself. Some of this is nostalgia – a way to balance out a world of automation and algorithms – but it is also a reprisal of what makes us human. We sometimes forget that our hands are one way that we make sense of the world. Craftsmanship is thinking with our hands – or, as the sociologist Richard Sennett puts it, “Making is thinking”. In his book The Craftsman, Sennett points out that it takes ten thousand hours – or ten years – of practice to master a craft, whether it’s

making violins or playing them. The musclememory of the craftsman is imbued with years of thought that would be impossible to translate into language. Allowing a craft tradition to die out is like letting a language disappear. Craftsmanship keeps entire communities together. One only has to look to Italy to see how craftsmanship is tied to a sense of place – just as towns and regions have their own culinary specialties, they also have regional craft skills. Italian craftsmanship is at the core of the sales value of the “Made in Italy” label, and it is the basis of one of the world’s great design cultures. Yet it has often been underestimated just how much of a role craft played in the design culture of post-war Italy – in fact, the Italians themselves often downplayed it, wanting to appear the modern, industrialized nation.

CRAFTSMANSHIP IS THINKING WITH OUR HANDS.

Take a product such as the Superleggera chair designed by Gio Ponti – so light that a child could pick it up with one finger, it remains a classic of 1950s design. But while its ash frame was mass-produced in a factory in Meda, to the north of Milan, its wicker seat was hand-woven by craftswomen in the Ligurian fishing village of Chiavari. Italian design has always relied on the collaboration of industrialists and traditional craftsmen. What’s more, this relationship was never one of simply telling the craftsman what to do, but allowing her to interpret the idea through the nature of the material and the skills passed down through generations. Once, such craftsmanship was a dirty secret – evidence of a lack of industrial development – today it is celebrated as cultural heritage. Indeed, some Italian furniture manufacturers have started looking further INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11 – 7

INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL

afield for craft traditions to incorporate into their pieces. The Udine-based brand Moroso developed a series of chairs, called M’Afrique, that are made in Senegal and inspired by local weaving traditions. Moroso paired European designers such as Tord Boontje and Patricia Urquiola with Senegalese weavers who work in colorful plastic twine – the same material that the local fishing nets are made of. The designers, who produced the chair frames, let the craftsmen choose their own colors and patterns in an open creative process. The results are strikingly colorful and elaborate, and clearly hand-made. The chairs set

themselves apart from contemporary designs by broadcasting their craftedness. Not only do they help keep local craft traditions alive but they declare craft an ultra-modern style statement. This coexistence of ancient and modern is nowhere more prevalent than in Japan. Here, cutting-edge robotics rubs shoulders with craft traditions that are a thousand years old. In the 1990s we looked to Japan more for the latest in technological gadgetry – as the novelist William Gibson aptly put it, Japan was “the global imagination’s default setting for the future” – but today we are just as

CRAFT BECOMES AN ULTRA-MODERN STYLE STATEMENT.

fascinated by skills that we imagined had died out. Earlier this year, an internet video of Japanese carpenters connecting two wooden beams went viral. The carpenters were using a highly complex traditional join of the kind that has been used to build timber-framed temples for more than a thousand years. What stunned the viewing public was the sheer complexity and precision of the join, the kind of complexity and precision that in our imaginations is only achievable using machine tools or possibly computerized routers. The fact that the join was hand cut

lent the video an aura of mystery, and its popularity proved that we still find such craft techniques a source of wonder. Japan has a seemingly endless supply of such craft traditions, from wood joinery to pottery and textiles, but one that has become extremely popular in the west is less predictable: denim. Even though denim manufacturing in Japan only dates back to the mid 20th century, the jeans produced in the Okayama prefecture are widely regarded as the best in the world. The simple reason for this is that the Okayama producers applied a craft mentality to what had been

an emblem of mass-produced clothing. The secret of Japanese selvedge denim is that it is made slowly on vintage looms that produce heavier and more complex textures. Far from the smooth consistency of massproduced jeans, Okayama denim is desired precisely for the opposite qualities, for its variation and imperfections. In a world where everyone wears jeans, the value of Okayama denim is that, with wearing, it develops a unique, personalised character. That quality of the bespoke meant that Japanese denim brands were the first to be able to charge luxury prices for a product that had previously been relatively cheap.

The growing appreciation of such craftsmanship means that as consumers we are more invested in making our possessions last. Leaving aside our electronic goods (which we upgrade and dispose of constantly) we are returning to the idea of repair. In London’s Soho you can now find jean repair shops, while in New York you can find sneaker repair shops. The appeal of repair is something we are having to relearn after half a century of disposability, and we seek inspiration from the great craft cultures. The Japanese have elevated repair to an art form. At the poorer levels of society, clothing and textiles were mended and patched endlessly

until they became valuable collectors items known as boro. Among the wealthier, kintsugi was the process of mending broken ceramics with a golden lacquer. With their decorative, golden seams, these revived bowls and teacups became much more valuable. They testify to a Japanese craft philosophy that appreciates not just imperfection and the trace of the hand but the moments of change in the life story of an object. But craft skills are not just increasingly valued by the consumer, they also have political and economic potency in the struggle to preserve neighbourhoods and whole towns. In Beijing’s crazed construc10 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11

tion boom of the last decade, the traditional hutong courtyards of the Dashilar district were only preserved because craftsmen lived and worked there. In Mumbai, the developers who want to build skyscrapers on top of the low-rise neighbourhood of Dharavi are being held at bay to some extend because thousands of craftsmen make it one of the most productive neighbourhoods in the city. The saving of craft communities has become a political priority even in towns where one had almost forgotten craftsmen still existed. Stoke-on-Trent, in the UK, was one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution.

The potteries where Josiah Wedgwood turned craftsmanship into industrial production in the 18th century are still functioning today. However, they are symptomatic of the decline of British industry in recent years – where once 70,000 people used to work, now it’s only ten percent of that. But there are signs that Stoke is beginning to come back to life as a new generation of craftsmen moves in to build on its craft legacy. One of these is Reiko Kaneko, an EnglishJapanese ceramicist who set up a studio in Stoke, where she could have much more

space than in London and be able to work with local craftsmen who have had pottery in their blood for generations. Needless to say, Kaneko’s ceramics are much more modern than Wedgwood’s classical crockery, catering to more minimalist tastes. Combining Japanese style with traditional English production techniques, she points to a future for Stoke in which craftsmanship can help revive the town’s fortunes. Ultimately, this is what one looks for in the revival of craft: the return of craftsmen to our communities. One of the reasons that craftsmanship is so highly prized is because

it has disappeared from view in most western cities, outsourced to India or Indonesia. But a new generation is returning to seeing creating as a way of life and finding a space to practice their craft amid the speed of the modern city. And their value will not just be measured in fine goods. As Sennett has made clear, craftsmanship comes with the traditions of passing on skills and provides social bonds in a community. In the ideal city, hands-on knowledge is never far away.

MATERIALS OF TOMORROW: A LOOK AT THE FUTURE OF DESIGN From the imperceptible to the awe-inspiring, today’s innovative materials share a common goal: to make whatever form they take perform better – lighter, stronger, more responsive, more sustainable and just plain smarter. Pioneering advances in material science are inspiring designers from all disciplines to take a fresh look at what, and how, they create. Here’s a snapshot. by Leslie Sherr

Bronze, stone, ceramic, gold – we define our earliest artifacts by their use and their material. Since as far back as the year one, an astonishing array of art and precious objects in a range of substances has been crafted for luxury and religious purposes, as well as everyday use. A traveler over two thousand years ago would have journeyed overland and along maritime routes through vibrant centers of trade, exchanging artistic traditions found in exotic new materials like lacquer, silk, porcelain, and paper. A mere backward glance is enough to reveal the innovation and creativity that have flourished from contact with other cultures. Today, we face new creative horizons where advanced materials and production techniques are reshaping our daily actions and how we engage with the world around us. From the structures we build to the goods we buy to the devices we use for connecting with others and recording memories, a variety of forces are catalyzing change, with innovation fueled as much by advances in diverse subfields of study as the composition of materials and how they are applied. Factors similar to those that drove previous flowerings in design are behind this latest chapter. Modern design took off during the postwar years when a new aesthetic rooted in experimentation and defense technology inspired designers to apply innovative materials, like molded plywood, fiberglass and synthetic resins, to peacetime use. While a surfeit of historical eras have turned today’s cultured aesthetes into relentless editors who are able to separate the past’s wheat from its chaffe, architects and designers working at 14 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. chromic pigments, for example, react to changes in temperature, while photo-chromic pigments react to changes in light levels. Additionally, from sensors and smart textiles to printed circuitry, structures and products of all kinds are increasingly designed to contain some form of electronic transmitter/ receiver, or “intelligence,” that allows them to connect to the Internet and interact with other devices around them. Termed the “Internet of Things,” or IoT, with a projected 26 billion devices connected to each other by 2020 (though some estimates go higher), this next technological wave merges the physical and the online worlds, allowing for the realization of what have been anticipated yet elusive tasks. The ability to monitor the freshness of food and medicine, track fitness data in real time, provide remote access to a building and improve transportation networks are just some of the more far-reaching applications already gaining traction. As the electronics needed to drive these devices become more powerful and afford-

So, what will the future bring and what will it be made of ? The latest advances in science are ushering in the next generation of materials that are lighter, stronger, more intelligent and more responsive.

“SMART” MATERIALS AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS During the past few decades, “smart” materials have resulted in buildings and objects engineered for superior strength, weight, conductivity or functionality. Their intelligence is derived from their reactive properties – an ability to change shape, color, or size in response to an external stimulus, such as temperature, moisture or the application of an electric or magnetic field. Thermo-

able, so is the need to shrink their size so that their functionality is embedded into the devices that house them without altering or impeding a design’s form. A reduction in weight, thickness and materiality is driving a new level of digital integration that is blurring the line between electronic components and actual products. Touch surfaces, wearables and textile-like components have the effect of “dematerializing” electronics so that future designs will look nothing like technology as we currently know it.

LIGHTNESS AND STRENGTH Largely a response to the quest for enhanced performance, advanced composites typically comprise layers of fibers woven or bonded into sheets of plastic, metal or ceramics that result in lightweight materials far stronger and more flexible than any single material could be alone. Combining the advantages of two different materials to achieve greater INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11 – 15

overall benefits has allowed advanced composites to have a decisive influence on a growing number of industries, most notably aerospace, automotive and marine but also sports equipment, medicine and musical instruments, for example. Such fused, hybrid materials, however, can be costly and are the biggest challenge to efficient recycling since they cannot be easily sorted by material type.

NATURE’S SUPER MATERIALS

16 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11

In the pursuit of stronger, cleaner, and more sustainable materials, scientists are turning to Mother Nature for inspiration. Biomimicry, a field of science that studies naturally occurring processes and designs to identify ways to mimic them, is influencing how materials are made, and the shapes they inspire across nearly every creative discipline. The attraction of processes that scientists seek to “biomimic” is that nature’s techniques are often more sophisticated and efficient, as well as less disruptive and destructive, than any manmade invention. By understanding how plants and animals handle certain challenges, engineers and designers hope to

find solutions to human needs that are less polluting, more energy-efficient, of higher quality and even lower cost.

3-D PRINTING Helping to close the gap between what can be imagined and what can be made is 3-D printing. A “printer” transforms digital blueprints into three-dimensional objects, giving users the power to be their own manufacturer. It’s a technological advance that paves the way for customized applications, from prosthetic devices to the rapid prototyping of design concepts. It also reflects an increasing desire for one-of-a-kind solutions based on individual tastes, ultimately enabling users to personally construct their environment, from how they select and organize online information to the spaces they inhabit. The latest iteration in 3-D printing goes a step further, with “smart” objects that are not static but able to self-assemble, a well-established phenomenon in nature that involves changing shape in response to a change in the environment.

WITH EACH NEW ADVANCE, WE LOOK TO MATERIALS TO DELIVER MORE THAN EVER BEFORE.

Skylar Tibbits, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s architecture school, has devised a way to feed a 3-D printer with a precise geometric code based on an object’s dimensions that dictate how it should alter its form when it engages with external forces like moisture, movement or a shift in temperature. The code sets the direction, the number of times and the angles at which a programmable material can bend and curl, suggesting new possibilities for how future objects are manufactured and adapt. With each new advance, we look to materials to deliver more than ever before, asking that they delight the senses, improve daily tasks,

respond to our evolving needs, and even incite us to be better citizens by acting sustainably. Whether conceived in a laboratory or already present in the natural world, the future possibilities for new materials are nothing short of thrilling. For them to truly improve the quality of our lives, though, their abilities need to align with our deepest priorities. As the world fundamentally changes, new materials, especially those that offer sustainable options over non-renewable ones, are potent reminders that we have the power to fashion our institutions, our culture, and our lives in ways that transform the future for the better.

PRODUCT FEATURE

THE MANERO COLLECTION Creating such fine timepieces as in the Manero collection by “Carl F. Bucherer”, requires extensive expertise, but also a steady hand. The entire collection is an expression of craftsmanship extraordinaire. Precious intricacies, bedded into a classically designed watch case, make for the charm of the Manero models. The simple three-hand watch Manero AutoDate focusses on the most elemental functions of a watch: indicating the time. The harmonious composition also remains immanent in models with further functions and complications. In addition to a second time zone, chronograph or power reserve can have their own, well-positioned spot on the noble dials. The latter complication is also integrated into the Manero PowerReserve, a model that has a classical design and is highly innovative: within, the manufactory’s own movement CFB A1011 is ticking away.

Manero PowerReserve

In the Manero MoonPhase, the watch makers have – in addition to the moon phase indicator – embedded a detailed calendar. The complicated time display finds its completion in the Manero ChronoPerpetual, a technological peak performance that indicates the date and moon phase without needing correction thanks to the eternal calendar. The fabrication of a complex tourbillon is the most supreme discipline in watch-making craftsmanship. That is why the Manero Tourbillon is regarded as the crowning glory of the line. The Manero collection has an ingrained elegance that lends a very special radiance to every timepiece. Unlike almost all other collections, it embodies the mechanical traditions of watchmaking craftsmanship. For the interior as well as the exterior features, Carl F. Bucherer puts a lot of stock into the watchmaking craft. The emphatically high quality of craftsmanship for the collection is reflected in the name it was given: Manero derives from the Latin “manuaria”, which essentially means “that which is guided by hand”.

MANERO – “THAT WHICH IS GUIDED BY HAND”. 18 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11

MASTERPIECE OF WATCHMAKING With the masterly timepiece Manero Tourbillon, Carl F. Bucherer strengthens his ultimate class artisanal competency. Because of its mechanical sophistication, the integrated tourbillon rates among the highest of challenges of watchmaking art. The fabrication of a Tourbillon is technologically highly complex, making it a finemechanical, masterly feat that can only be accomplished by a few watchmakers worldwide. Carl F. Bucherer masters this supreme discipline of watch making and brings this work of art to life: Inside of the Manero Tourbillon, a whirlwind is running rounds – as the centerpiece, it gives insight into the fascinating mechanisms through the open dial. The concept of the Tourbillon was already developed at the end of the 18th century. Its function is to compensate for the imprecision that occurs in the accuracy of a mechanical watch due to gravity. By the position of a watch on the wrist, gravity influences how fast or how slow a balance spring moves. A rotating cage was designed in which the balance spring was placed to

reduce this influence. The contraption allows the balance spring and the escapement to revolve around themselves. As a consequence, they are independent of the wrist watch’s location.

also exceptional. The remaining energy can be read off thanks to the power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock. The fine dial is completed by the 24-hour indicator at 12 o’clock.

In addition to the Tourbillon itself, there are other special features embedded in the Manero model. From the centre, the date is indicated by a hand. The numerals of the date scale changes the direction at 3 and 9 o’clock, meaning that the numerals are distinctly readable even during a quick glance. The above-average power reserve of the Manero Tourbillon that lasts 70 hours is

The design also speaks of the love and attention to detail with which the model was designed. The noble red-gold of the case repeats itself in the v-shaped indices on the dial and the tapered hour and minute hands. In every detail, the Manero Tourbillon shows that the watchmakers at Carl F. Bucherer have created a true masterpiece with heart and skill.

PRODUCT FEATURE

UNMISTAKABLE ORIGINAL Inside the Manero PowerReserve from the classic line of Carl F. Bucherer ticks the manufacturer’s own CFB A1011 automatic caliber, which harbors a timepiece special feature with its peripherally mounted rotor. The Manero PowerReserve is an innovation in classic design. On the outside the timepiece impresses with its clear design and clarity. The power reserve indicates on the remaining energy with a half-moon shaped display. The dial and hands, which give the timepiece its characteristical look, are designed with care. The heart of the Manero PowerReserve holds another special kind of innovation: the manufacturer’s own automatic caliber CFB A1011. A special feature of the movement is the peripherally mounted and bidirectional oscillating weight, which supplies power to the automatic gear train. What makes this special: The rotor, which supplies the timepiece with energy, is positioned on the outer border of the movement. This construction – in contrast to a centrally mounted rotor – gives the viewer an unobstructed view into the movement. Another special feature of the automatic movement is the efficiency of the handwound gear, since the oscillating weight supplies energy in both rotational directions. In the watch industry, this ingenious technique is a special highlight, since patents and innovation are becoming evermore scarce.

To clearly distinguish these outstanding achievements from plagiarized pieces and to simplify the differentiation between the two, Carl F. Bucherer chose to implement a unique safeguard. The Swiss company Mimotec SA from Sion developed a technology for the certification of original products, with which the products can be marked with an individual laser signature: This so-called CLR Liga technology furnishes even the smallest components with a diffractive surface structure that reflects light in the form of a unique signature. Thanks to the complexity of this process, it is impossible for forgers to copy. Furthermore,

this new technology positively stands out amongst others, since the CLR Liga technology can be recognized quickly and uncomplicatedly with a reading device. The signature is also directly integrated into the product. With this a distinct authentification is possible, even decades later – independent of technological systems. The Manero PowerReserve is presented as the first model with an integrated laser signature of the Carl F. Bucherer logo. It is not only a signature of the brand name, but also a certification for quality, innovation and design that sets standards.

ONE OF A KIND PIECE FOR ETERNITY The Manero ChronoPerpetual OnlyWatch 2015 featuring a “grand complication” perpetual calendar is able to show the date, day, month, year and moon phase without requiring correction. Exclusively created for the renowned Only-Watch-Charity-Auction. Complex and somewhat hard to understand is our computation of time: In old Rome the year was already divided into twelve months with seven months having 31 days, four months having 30 days and one month having 28 or 29 days. This resulted in 365.25 days per year, plus an additional day every four years to correct the time. However, this calculation contained an error of 0.0078 days per year. This discrepancy was corrected in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. The system, which is named after him, misses out a leap year every 100 years, except in complete centuries where the number of years is divisible by 400. The Gregorian calendar is still used today and forms the basis for the way we measure time. Stemming from this concept is the “grand complication” of the so-called perpetual calendar: The movement is not only capable of adjusting the date of every single month, but also takes leap years into consideration. A manual correction will not be necessary until 2100, when – as in all years that are divisible by 100, but not by 400, - a leap year will be missed. The Manero ChronoPerpetual OnlyWatch 2015 is with its perpetual calendar a masterpiece of the watchmaker’s craft. In addition to that, the Manero ChronoPerpetual OnlyWatch 2015 is furnished with further timepiece ingenuities: A precise chronograph with a flyback function, a moon phase display and a tachymeter scale on the bezel completes the range of practical functions so typical for Carl F. MANUFACTORY

A WATCH MANUFACTURER IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN From 2005 to 2015: The decade that changed Carl F. Bucherer It all began with the determination to do better. But how? The Carl F. Bucherer way, of course! The company embarked on a major expansion of its production facility, where it developed one of the most innovative inhouse watch movements in the industry. by Olivier Müller

A MODEL FACTORY COMES INTO BEING Engrossed in their work, the watchmakers in Carl F. Bucherer’s workshops nearly missed the jubilee. Ten years ago, Carl F. Bucherer began to develop its own manufacturing movement that demonstrates the innovative capacity of the brand.

From the outset, CFB A1000 was considered a bridge between tradition and modernity.

The phrase may sound trite, but Carl F. Bucherer’s actions spoke louder than its words. To this day, the CFB A1000 remains the cornerstone of the manufacturing expertise of Carl F. Bucherer. “We’ve developed an extremely appealing watch movement, which our peripheral rotor leaves fully visible,” sums up one of its developers. “It’s also a sophisticated, futuristic movement.” The in-house caliber sets new standards and is a technical trendsetter that inspires others.

It was a big step. But it was true to the twin principles on which Bucherer Group had been founded: mastery of its craft, and preservation of its independence. Thus, the

company took this venture upon itself and fully integrated the watch factory at Sainte-Croix with the company. Carl F. Bucherer was determined to set new standards in watchmaking. By 2008, connoisseurs of the art of watchmaking were able to see what this philosophy meant in practice: the patented CFB A1000 with peripheral rotor was the first Carl F. Bucherer in-house movement.

FROM THE OUTSET, TSET TSET, A BRIDGE BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERNITY.

The technical refinements of the CFB A1011 result in an exceptionally large power reserve.

Attention to detail: developer Joachim Mutrux and his team.

CFB A1000, THE MIRACLE MOVEMENT The many hands at Sainte-Croix made light work, and soon the new movement became a reality. The CFB A1000’s outstanding feature is its peripheral rotor. That alone would have qualified Carl F. Bucherer for admission to the echelons of haute horlogerie on two essential counts: effective winding and total visibility of the movement. In other words, a combination of aesthetics and precision engineering. These two aims had previously been incompatible: effective winding of the movement had required a heavy – and therefore big – rotor, which inevitably concealed the movement. The only conceivable solution, an idea that already existed, was to position the rotor at the side. Carl F. Bucherer invested heavily in research and development and finally became the first watch brand to create a production-ready version. But what about perfecting the solution? The factory set about this task in a low-key way. It steadily developed the peripheral rotor further, and that was not all. Carl F. Bucherer’s watchmakers worked relentlessly on new movements. Though based on the

CFB A1000, these developed new functions. Five were now added to the hour and minute hands: big date, date and calendar week display, seconds display and power reserve indicator. It was always important that the basic design of the CFB A1000 should leave room for further development to increase the power reserve. The CFB A1011 movement, the ticking heart of the Manero PowerReserve, achieved this goal. The sophisticated movement gives the timepiece an exceptionally large reserve, with 55 hours guaranteed. Realistically, the reserve is even more than 60 hours. The CFB A1011 is engineered to display the remain-

ing power reserve almost exactly, which is shown clearly on the dial. An indicator in the three-o’clock position shows exactly when the reserve is going to reach zero. The display is perfectly legible and in harmony with the classic looks of the Manero PowerReserve. This design is the fruit of long development work, which is unprecedented in the watchmaking industry.

AND IN 10 YEARS… A range of patents now protect the technological innovations made by the CFB A1000. The factory employees are constantly on the lookout to cooperate with external colleagues and gain new ideas. The high-profile Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is one of Carl F. Bucherer’s partners in applied research relating to watchmaking technology. Ongoing developments such as these are the lifeblood of the Bucherer collections and will determine where the factory will stand in 10 to 20 years’ time. Current discussion centers on a new series of in-house watch movements, which will pose exciting challenges. Here’s hoping the watchmakers of Sainte-Croix don’t miss the 20th birthday of the Carl F. Bucherer factory! INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11 – 23

STUNT ACTION DESIGN IN HOLLYWOOD With their company “87eleven” David Leitch and Chad Stahelski realized their dream of bringing visionary stunt choreographies to the screen and inspiring an international audiences. Racy editing, athletic fighting scenes and action-packed suspense – it is the art of battle that excites and inspires both filmmakers. That is why they often resort to martial arts in their breath-taking scenes. This term “martial arts” refers to fighting styles that are based on a set of rules and often incorporates philosophical aspects as well as guidelines for everyday life and health. The term itself can be traced back to “Ars Martialis”, namely the “Art of Mars”, and thereby to the Roman god of war. Today, numerous disciplines are counted as martial arts – be they with or without weapons and from Asia or Europe.

The passion for the art of combat burned in David Leitch from an early age. With enthusiasm, he practiced the powerful motion sequences on his own that he knew from movies and magazines. When he was accepted to the famous Dan Inosanto Academy for Martial Arts during his studies at the University of Minnesota, he quickly rose to become one of the best athletes in the different disciplines. As a stuntman, David Leitch rapidly became recognized as one of the big action players in the film business. He doubled as a stuntman for Brad Pitt during filming “Fight Club” and Matt Damon in “The Bourne Ultimatum”, amongst others.

The enthusiasm for dynamic martial arts that combine skill and strength also lives in Chad Stahelski. At a young age, he collected black belts in different disciplines. During his studies at the University of Southern California at the renowned Inosanto Academy, he rose from an exceptional student to a teacher within a remarkably short time. Numerous prizes won at competitions are a testament to his special talent and the urge to go to the limit. Fascinated by the creative possibilities of film, Chad Stahelski swiftly made a name for himself as a stuntman and fascinated with his courage and ambition. He got his big break as a double of Brandon Lee in “The

INTERVIEW WITH DAVID LEITCH Script, camera, editing: Until a movie is cinema-ready, it goes through many production phases. The fight scenes of the Stunt & Action Design Company “87eleven” are especially elaborate. Take a look behind the scenes of shooting “John Wick” with CEO David Leitch. You worked with “87eleven” as the so-called 2nd unit. What do you mean by this? As the term already implies, the 2nd unit is the second crew during filming. As directors of the 2nd unit, we take over when an action scene is being filmed, among other scenes. We are doing the job of the director, which means directing actors, stuntmen, camera and crew to film the scenes. We must try to match the stylistic choices, camera perspective, the lighting and a lot, lot more that the film’s director has chosen. During these scenes the set is ours. As a director of a 2nd unit, how did you get the idea to direct an entire movie? We have been working on sets for many years and had direct contact with some of the best directors of our times. While working with them all, we were paying attention and trying to soak up all that was going on. It’s been a dream to take that knowledge to the next level for a long time … and we got our opportunity with “John Wick”. Which differences have you noticed as a director of an entire movie? Well, it’s about decision making, ultimately. As director, you are creating worlds, deciding character arcs, making every decision which is exciting and nerve wracking, too. What was it like to work with Chad Stahelski? We know each other so well, we are like brothers. We always prepare the scenes together and pretty much know what the other is thinking at any given time during the production, though we are very different and handle the crew very differently. What does an actor learn first at “87eleven” when preparing for a role?

The usual movements, independent of the type of martial arts. It is very important to stimulate body awareness and to have good posture. This helps to prevent injuries and serves as preparation to learn action scenes. For the latter, every actor receives his own choreography, which needs to be studied step by step. How did you prepare Keanu Reeves for his role? What was part of his training? Keanu is interested in martial arts himself and therefore already has a lot of prior knowledge. We have worked with him a lot in the past, so he has his basics and is extremely well prepared. But, as we got into “John Wick”, he came to our studios and worked with us on gun handling and we taught him gun-fu. This type of work is as essential to understanding the character as learning your lines. Keanu Reeves wears his wrist watch on the inner side of his wrist. Does this reflect the character of his role? This is actually a habit of trained militants to wear their watch this way. They must repeatedly coordinate the time with their team when they are on a mission. Holding a weapon and aiming at a target, but having to twist the arm to read the time would be a grave mistake. This is why they wear their watch with the display faced on the inner side of their wrist, so that the view of the target is not disturbed. Is there a little story from the set that you would like to share with us? For one of the last scenes of the movie, in which Keanu Reeves fights in the rain, we had to shoot outside at a harbor. The nights were very cold and we asked Keanu if he would rather postpone the filming, since we needed to dump a ton of water over his head

AS DIRECTOR, YOU ARE CREATING WORLDS.

to create rain. The water would have turned the already cold set into a freezing one. He straight up refused. He said something along the lines of, let’s get on with it – don’t worry about me. We appreciate his professionalism and work dedication. Do you know how your debut movie “John Wick” is being received, especially pertaining the lengthy action scenes? Test screenings gave us some indication that it was going over well with a lot of people – women included, which surprised everyone since it is a bit of a blood bath. Turns out people love dogs … and they deserve to be avenged. I think everyone responded to the bold choices and the fun of the film. We could not be happier about its reception. Are further projects planned? There are a bunch of exciting projects on the horizon. Stay tuned! INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11 – 31

RED CARPET IN BERLIN In January 2015, the heart-stopping action thriller “John Wick” premiered in Germany. An exclusive preview was held at the Classic Remise in Berlin on the occasion of the film release. The Classic Remise is the perfect place for the thrilling premiere of “John Wick”: Precious vintage cars line up beside collectibles from fans. The restored Wilhelmine tramway depot created a very special flair, with exclusive timepieces by Carl F. Bucherer integrated into the ambience. One particular highlight was the arrival of directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski who came to the premiere in Germany and were present at the preview. A further famous guest invited was Daniel Bernhardt who acts as the opponent of Keanu Reeves. He answered journalist’s questions at a press cocktail reception before the beginning of the film screening.

Daniel Bernhardt also gave the guests an insight into his fascinating career: The Friend of the Brand of the traditional label from Lucerne confidently and persistently follows his own path. Born and raised in Berne, he was inspired by Bruce Lee and has been practicing various martial arts since the age of 15. Thai boxing, karate and tae kwon do, to just name a few. Numerous film projects followed on the heels of his successful career as a model for several fashion labels. As it often happens in life, it was pure chance that brought him together with Jean-Claude Van Damme.

So Daniel Bernhardt made a spur-of-themoment decision, while on the set of a photo shoot, to seize the opportunity to enter the film business. Despite the scores of film shootings, his family remains his number one priority, as he explained to the journalists at the press cocktail party. The premiere at the Classic Remise was a complete success. Numerous VIP guests and media representatives enjoyed the evening that combined a laid-back atmosphere with action-packed thrill.

NEW SPLENDOR IN BERN Local flair meets international ambience: After undergoing renovations, the Bucherer boutique in Bern boasts an interior that is second to none. Boutique manager Peter von Gunten shares some unique details with INSIGHT by Carl F. Bucherer. Our boutique is on Kornhausplatz, in the heart of Bern. We look out on an important symbol of Swiss tradition: the famous Zytgloggenturm. This is a clock tower of medieval origin, with a well-known astronomical clock and chimes.

The listed building in the old town that is home to our boutique reflects a long history and offers the ideal setting for our range of traditional watch and jewelry brands.

34 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11

Our refurbishment laid special emphasis on high-quality materials. For example, the walls and floor are in light-colored, polished Botticino marble, a fine sandstone from Lombardy, Italy.

Silk carpets are numbered among the world’s finest and most beautiful. They provide the top-quality covering of our entire first floor. Stroke the surface of a silk carpet. It feels as soft as human skin. Stroke backwards, against the pile, and it’s like velvet. This creates an exquisite ambience and conveys a feel-good ambiance.

At a jeweler’s like Bucherer, art must be ‘built in.’ The light installations by the Brazilian artist, Valeria Nascimento, had caught my eye in our boutiques in Paris and Munich. So I was thrilled when she agreed to create a suitable ceiling structure for us. She has carried out this assignment with impressive creativity, adorning her filigree artwork with myriad ceramic blooms.

The sophisticated ceiling structure on the first floor is our architects’ masterpiece. Take a second look, and you’ll see what I mean. Its hand-finished plasterwork alternates flat expanses, roundings and pools of light, giving the room a wonderful sense of soaring spaciousness.

I love the layout of our shop window. Instead of the usual display on two flat tiers, two standalone cabinets have been built and positioned in the window. This innovative configuration creates astonishing transparency, lightness and a threedimensional visual effect.

Our clientele comprises a wide assortment of people. But everyone, be they clients from Switzerland or globetrotting tourists, should feel at home here. That is why the combination of local flair and international ambience is vital to us. We’ve pulled off this trick successfully through our sensible division of space and our combination of large scale and homeliness, such as the upstairs lounge nook.

As a jeweler, my preference is for classic watches. My first choice would be the Manero PowerReserve in pink gold, by Carl F. Bucherer. The retrograde power reserve display and large date on the dial reflect great watchmaking and aesthetic design.

Peter von Gunten’s credo:

“ANYONE WHO KEEPS THE ABILITY TO SEE BEAUTY NEVER GROWS OLD”. (Franz Kafka)

The boutique’s centerpiece is a round glass showcase. Its curvature fits into the space very neatly. Leather, dark oak and bronze-coated brass fittings come together in an elegant design.

Peter von Gunten is Boutique Manager at Bucherer Bern and has worked for the Bucherer company since 1993. A goldsmith by trade, he is also a retail trainer and has taken numerous advanced courses. Masterpieces of the watchmaker’s and jeweler’s craft are both his passion and his life.

BASELWORLD 2015 The new Carl F. Bucherer chronographs have delighted fans around the globe. The showpiece watches were first revealed to the public at Baselworld, in March 2015. The many events surrounding the Swiss watchmaking brand made an elegant setting for the presentation.

Baselworld is the event that highlights trends in the watch industry and also its most important platform for presenting brand worlds and launching new products. Carl F. Bucherer was again present with a stand in the prestigious Hall 1.0, where it rubbed shoulders with many of the world’s best-known and most important watch marques. The three-story pavilion is designed on the keynote theme ‘feel at home.’ Its cubist shapes, clear lines and harmonious color concept are impressive. This stand reflects the elegance and emphatically high quality of the Carl F. Bucherer brand. It displays all the Swiss watchmaker’s collections, and welcomes visitors from all over the world.

The highlight of the lounge area was the exhibition of the Manero ChronoPerpetual OnlyWatch 2015: a single masterpiece in white gold, created especially for Only Watch 2015. Visitors had the chance to admire the precious unique creation on the stand, before it joined the worldwide Only Watch Roadshow. It will eventually be auctioned, with the proceeds going to the Monaco Association Against Muscular Dystrophy (AMM).

The artistic embellishments of the exhibition stand achieved a remarkable combination of their own. In the pavilion lounge, Carl F. Bucherer created a successful link between Switzerland and China. Works of the artists Tan Ping, from China and Luciano Castelli, from Lucerne, were displayed on a theme of ‘China’s abstraction and the figuration of the West.’

This year all eyes were on the Patravi TravelTec family. The watch, which features three time zones, marked its tenth anniversary with an impressive new model: the Patravi TravelTec II. The unique combination of three time zones displayed in one chronograph, is now resplendent in a bold, compact case. Celebrating the occasion, Carl F. Bucherer held international press lunches in Basel, which introduced selected journalists to the functions and fascination of the Patravi TravelTec Collection. Even the ‘library’ on the exhibition stand bore the legend ‘Dedicated to Patravi TravelTec II’ and illustrated the immense variety of the countries in different time zones.

At an exclusive press brunch Sascha Moeri, CEO of Carl F. Bucherer, introduced two new and personable Friends of the Brand. Sprinter Mujinga Kambundji and ski racer Sandro Viletta officially confirmed their cooperation with the Lucerne watchmaker. At the same time, they were treated to their own chronographs. Viletta chose a Patravi EvoTec DayDate, while Kambundji received the twotone Pathos Diva with fine diamonds.

That same delight in the material is apparent again at the first glimpse of the new Pathos Diva in pure rose gold. The precious metal sets off the aureole design, the distinctive feature of the many versions within the Pathos Collection. With aureole in a wave design or filigree mesh pattern, dial in shimmering mother of pearl or delicately ornamented on plain white, in pale rose gold or with opulent diamonds – there’s a perfect Pathos to suit every woman’s taste. A special launch event for selected bloggers celebrated the new Pathos Diva rose gold. The ladies shared the opportunity to discover the variety of the Pathos Collection with Friends of the Brand Wendy Holdener, Bianca Sissing and Nubya.

DJ Antoine, a Friend of the Brand, joined a panel of experts at Baselworld to discuss the link between time and luxury. The MetaDesign podium discussion engaged with the theme: ‘luxury is dead, long live luxury.’

An event staged by the Pacific Society offered the perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to encounter the surprises lurking in the depths of the ocean. And the new version of the Patravi ScubaTec wristwatch made the perfect accouterment for discovering the charm of the south seas. The new model, in rose gold, powerfully combines sporting style with the energy of the adventurer. The bezel, which rotates only one way, features striking black and blue ceramic inlays, ideally complementing the precious metal. Another impressive feature is the light, reflected off the scaled surface of the black dial. The effect is reminiscent of the dappled reflections on the surface of the water. As part of this success story, the time-honored Lucerne firm has made use of the expertise accumulated over many years in both the watchmaking and jewelry making arts, developing impressive collections and proprietary works born of the company philosophy: «Bound to tradition. Driven by innovation.» Now Carl F. Bucherer is sharing its passion with an international audience. At an exhibition, beginning on May 8th, in the Airside Center at Zurich Airport, Carl F. Bucherer will be showing the vibrancy of traditional craftsmanship. Visitors are invited to experience

this tradition and receive a souvenir photo to take home with them.

PRECIOUS TIMEPIECES: CARL F. BUCHERER Selected collection pieces will be on display for six weeks to highlight the high art and science of watchmaking. One feature of the exhibition is an insight into the mechanical fineries of the Manero Tourbillon, with an integrated tourbillon whose sophisticated design compensates for loss of movement accuracy due to the effects of gravity.

STEP INTO THE ROLE OF WATCHMAKER Visitors of the exhibition will be able to play the role of watchmaker themselves. With the city of Lucerne as the backdrop, where the Carl F. Bucherer headquarters is located, visitors can take a seat at a watchmaker›s bench and have a photo taken of them practicing this highly respected craft.

VIVID TRADITION AT ZURICH AIRPORT.

POINT OF VIEW

The Mechanics of Perfecting Time:

PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS I’ve been writing about watches for 30 years. I’ve authored six books on the subject. If someone had told me when I was completing my Master’s degree in Journalism that I would spend half of my lifetime writing about timepieces, I would have laughed. Today, I think differently. Watches are a serious business. The concept of tracking time – an idea that has been around as long as man – is a powerful aphrodisiac. The thought of taking a fleeting second and watching it pass by on our wrists

Today, many companies rely heavily on machine work, more so than on hand craftsmanship. But, when it comes to the finest brands in the world, the workmanship and the attention to detail are paramount. When I look at a timepiece, I do two things. First, I peer as deeply into it as possible. If it has a skeletonized movement or a mainplate as dial, I examine the components and their finishing. If the watch seems to be a basic “case and dial” watch, then I study the case, the dial, and the craftsmanship.

“A TOP-QUALITY WATCH MUST LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED”. is monumental. This is an industry based on obsession for perfection, based on a neverending inventive quest to find better and more innovative – and beautiful – ways to track that second (and fractions thereof ). Innovation, however, comes from a spark that must be ignited into a flame. To be a leader one must not only have the idea, but also be driven by passion and by a desire to continually surpass one’s own abilities. In today’s world – where watchmaking spans more than five centuries – certain watch brands embrace the spirit and enthusiasm of the craft more wholly than others. Carl F. Bucherer is one of those brands.

44 – INSIGHT BY CARL F. BUCHERER Nº11

Next, I turn the watch over and examine it from the back. To me, the back can be just as telling as the front and sides – and sometimes it is even more beautiful. I once had a novice writer in the watch industry look at me in wonder when I took a beautiful watch and immediately turned it over. “What are you looking for?” the person asked. The response was easy, “I am looking for no stone unturned.” A top-quality watch has to spare no effort. It must be magnificent not only for its precision engineering and technical advancement, but also for its technique, finish and craftsmanship. Because Carl F. Bucherer is

an independent Swiss watch company (one of just a handful left in today’s world), it has the ability to stretch its proverbial wings and invest time and resources into going the extra miles when it comes to the concept of hand-made and hand-finished. I am always impressed when a watch brand can demonstrate its ability to embrace its past, and then channel that legacy into modern timepieces that can go the distance – ensuring time for future generations.
