INTRODUCCIÓN

BIOGRAPHY

Francisco Sánchez Gómez, Paco de Lucía, Algeciras (Cádiz) 1947. He is considered to be one of the most outstanding guitarists of all time. He has received, amongst other awards, the Arte Flamenco National Prize for Guitar, the Golden Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, the Honorary Distinction of Prizes for Music, the Prince of Asturias prize for Arts, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Cádiz and an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music, Boston becoming the first Spanish musician to receive this prestigious award. He received his first guitar lessons from his father and his brother “Ramón de Algeciras”. His father insisted that the guitarist practice for many hours each day during his childhood. The name “de Lucía” stuck at a young age – children were identified by the name of their mother in order to differentiate between themselves. Paco de Lucía was influenced mainly by two schools of guitar: that of Niño Ricardo and that of Sabicas. Without doubt, Paco de Lucía created the most important school of flamenco guitar where guitarists from and after his generation have learned from the great genius of flamenco guitar. His artistic union with Camarón de la Isla resulted in one of the most wonderful flamenco partnerships of all time. Together and separately they paved the way for popular flamenco, mixing styles and entering the world of pop, rock and jazz. Another contribution which Paco de Lucía made to contemporary flamenco was to include the cajón. Paco de Lucía discovered this Afro-Peruvian instrument in Peru in the late seventies. The master also introduced the flute to flamenco. In more than 50 recordings that he made we discover many wonderful aspects of Paco de Lucía such as: •

A revolutionary composer and pioneer.

An accompanist of flamenco song with sublime execution, accompanying flamenco greats like Camarón and Fosforito.

Improvising and crossing over other genres of music such as jazz and rock.

A performer and arranger of popular and classical music.

Each recording is a musical master class and each one has marked new developments for flamenco and musical culture.
