デンダモンデ ケース|THE DENDERMONDE CASE YEAR// MASTER First Year, Autumn 2018 TYPE// Individual Project LOCATION// Dendermonde, Belgium TUTOR// Marc Dujardin Marc.Dujardin@kuleuven.be

RESPONSE// Working on the local context of Dendermonde, this project sought to design a strategic and crucial intervention, by reflecting upon temporary ways to respond to the spatial problem of the Kazerne, which houses the Unesco heritage masterpiece Ros Beiaard. Through this, I created a ‘horse/bike hotel’ to narrate the story of Reynout and Beiaard, to accentuate and nurture the relationship of trust, friendship and loyalty between human and horse. The horse, is actually a metaphor for the bicycle ‘metal horse’.

Ros Beiaard Celebration Route

The Ros Beiaard Parade happens every 10 years. Seeing the horse is an emotional moment for people in Dendermonde. It is a spiritual connection in the sense that they know the presence of Ros Beiaard in the building, but cannot be seen.

5

STORY OF THE MAGICAL HORSE

Rinaldo and his three brothers were known as The Four Sons of Aymon (Lord of Dendermonde).

They were all granted a horse each, however Rinaldo injured many horses and none were strong enough for him.

Legend has it that on top of the tower, there is a powerful horse named Ros Beiaard and will only obey an owner as strong as itself. Beiaard accepted Rinaldo and became Rinaldo's majestic horse.

While in exile, the four sons flee on the magical horse Beiaard, who is powerful enough to carry them all.

The queen pleads Lord Charlemagne to free her sons and Charlemagne delivers an ultimatum: peace in exchange for Beiaard.

Symbolism and Messages Lord Charlemagne - The outside political norm - someone you have to conform to Beiaard - the one that drives your inner force to do who you are and what you want, so even if it brings you conflict with what exists, will you embrace your "inner horse"? The tragic end in the reason hat Rinaldo could no longer look at his horse meant he was not confronting himself with Beiaard and his own inner strength It's not only making a connection to the horse but also a connection to yourself - unleashing your inner strength and resilience. 6

Delivered to Charlemagne as a pledge of peace, Beiaard is able to escape twice while Rinaldo watches him. However, Rinaldo turns away at the third time, where Beiaard believes that he is abandoned by his owner and no longer struggles for his survival; and drowns in the river of Schelde.

The news of Rinaldo's new horse was spread and is summoned to play a game of chess with Lord Charlemagne's son in order to take Beiaard, in which the champion had to behead the other. Rinaldo won, which led to the fury of Charlemagne.

STABLE (N.) early 13c., "building or enclosure where horses or cows are kept, building for domestic animals," from Old French stable, estable "a stable, stall" (Modern French ĂŠtable), also applied to cowsheds and pigsties, from Latin stabulum "a stall, fold, aviary, beehive, lowly cottage, brothel, etc.," literally "a standing place," from PIE *ste-dhlo-, suffixed form of root *sta- "to stand, make or be firm."

アーバン|URBAN YEAR// THIRD Year, Spring (Final Project) TYPE// Individual Project LOCATION// Sheerness-on-Sea, UK TUTOR// Timothy Brittain Catlin T.J.Brittain-Catlin@kent.ac.uk RESPONSE// Sheerness-on-Sea is located on the Isle of Sheppey, North Kent. It is a former Royal Dockyard of great importance especially during th Napoleonic War. However, the closure of th Dockyard in 1960s led to the dilapidation of the town. This Urban project aims to act as a catalyst to revive and nourish the town by introducing a community hub for music and arts to rediscover the heart of Sheerness. The eerie beauty of the sheerness lay in the history of the once prominent dockyard. The metal rods hang from the ceiling interpreted as piano strings, guiding visitors around the building. The dynamics change according to the strings, which leads the users to the ‘gem’ of the community centre: the auditorium - like the delicate centrepiece of a music box.

アダプト & エクステンド|ADAPT AND EXTEND YEAR// THIRD Year, Autumn TYPE// Individual Project LOCATION// Canterbury, UK TUTOR// Jef Smith J.J.Smith@kent.ac.uk

RESPONSE// This project’s main aim is to design a museum for the Canterbury Archaeological Centre, creating a permanent and temporary exhibition space in the rich setting of Northgate, Canterbury. The challenge of the project was to make an appropriate adaptation and extension to the existing Tudor-style building and a continuation to the High Street. My approach to this adaptation was looking into the pattern of the existing facade of the High Street. Located at the corner of the street, I wanted to extend the continuity of the verticality of the neighbouring Tudor facades, with a contemporary design to ‘make a mark’ of a 21st Century adaptation. My main inspiration was Reiss Headquarters and Rolex Learning Centre, which allowed me to achieve a ‘ghosted’ effect, while retaining the richness of the context. 1/ EXISTING SITE AND BUILDING 2/ PROPORTIONS OF EXISTING SITE 3/ EXISTING BUILDING PLAN 4/ DESIGN CONCEPT EXPRESSING VERTICALITY 5/ FACADE CONCEPTS 6/ EXISTING VERTICALITY NEAR SITE 7/ EXISTING BUILDING STRUCTURE

The pod aims for single or couples to isolate and disconnect from the city life of hustle-and-bustle, and to reconnect with nature inside a cocoon/nest-like home for a sense of comfort and protection. With a transparent roof blurring the indoor and out, we have an uninterrupted view of the sky which draws in the sunlight during the day and capturing the stars at night. The Pod uses natural materials, such as bamboo and local timber for sustainability. The Pod is a lightweight structure, but it uses deep foundations to secure the structure. Light colours were chosen to absorb heat and tatami bamboo is used for cooling properties. The tatami living space is an enclosed multi-functional space, with all activities placed in the centre of the Pod. ‘Nature inspires feelings that connect us to each other and the environment’
