This past Thursday, June 8, the Flagstaff Active Living for Seniors Conference returned at Providence Place. With an enthusiastic crowd, the event featured speaker Donna Coombs from Seniors FIRST, talking about accessing needed programs, services, and supports to sustain independence. The audience was next treated to a musical performance featuring Flagstaff County native Ethan

Harty, who is also the 2019 and 2022 Canadian Grand Master Fiddler Champion. After a catered roast beef dinner, it was time to get moving with a Senior Aerobics session. A session on the importance of good foot care was full of good information about the benefits of keeping your feet healthy. The day ended with a planting workshop, hosted by Kathryn Fee from Budding Ideas, where each attendee received a free plant and supplies to repot it.

Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County Peace Officer Skyler Zelinski and Daysland EMS put on a Bike Safety Rodeo for Daysland youth at Daysland School last week. Students learned all about bike safety, including how to check their tires, brakes, chain, and seat height. They also learned about helmet use and how to ensure a proper fit, and which hand signals to use while riding. A similar event is held at Forestburg School, with Forestburg Fire Department, EMS members, and Zelinski. Zelinski says he’s received interest from other municipalities, and is hoping to hold similar events rotating around the region in the future.

Flagstaff County welcomes new Peace Officer Ivan Alvarado Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County has hired a second peace officer, welcoming Ivan Alvarado. Alvarado hails from Lac la Biche, where he’s made his home since he was around 19. Before that, he lived with his family in Guadalajara, Mexico. Alvarado says his father, mother, and sisters moved to Lac la Biche around 15 years ago, while he was in post-secondary school, under the skilled worker program. After a while, his father asked if he wanted to come, too, and he joined the rest of the family. When his family returned to Mexico, he decided to stay in Alberta, and he’s been here since. Alvarado settled in Lac la Biche, and now has a wife and three children there. He says his first drive there as a teen from the airport was eye-opening, coming from a city of 15 million to rural Alberta, “At first it felt like the middle of nowhere.” But he says he’s always enjoyed the outdoors,

and there was plenty to do in the region. Alvarado started working at the Rona store there, and discovered that some of his workmates played music. Through that connection, he joined a band where he played bass guitar, with the band even opening for Brett Kissel once, and travelling throughout Alberta and BC. The travelling got to him, though, while still working full time, and he decided to quit the band, although he says, “I still enjoy playing.” He took a year to travel to Mexico with his oldest daughter, he says, and

when he returned, he worked for the same person, but now was driving truck for a waste disposal company. It was during this time that Alvarado joined the Lac la Biche Fire Department, which he says he really loves. After three months of recruitment training, he was hitting every call he could; last year he was at 180 calls. “But it started to really cut into my family time. I was still working full time, and doing training, and calls, so I started to slow it down at bit to spend more time with my family.” Once he got his permanent residency, it really

opened up his career options, he says. He says he liked being a firefighter so much he even considered doing it professionally, but since that would mean a move to the city, he was unsure whether it would suit him and his family. “If I was younger, I might have done it.” So he also started to look into law enforcement, something he’d always been interested in. The fire department worked often with the local peace officers at scenes. “I started talking to them, and I found what they do very interesting. I like the idea of helping my community.” He discovered that depending on where you work, the role of peace officer involves different things from municipality to municipality, which was also a plus for him, as he loves learning new things and experiences. Around this time, a peace officer training program started in Lac la Biche, and he knew the

person who ran it. Alvarado decided to take the plunge, and paid for the training himself. “Most of the people there had already been hired and were sent by their employers.

“I talked to my wife, and we discussed whether I could cut down to part-time work and go to school.” The training course is an intense 11 weeks long, Continued on Page B10

Selling 3,000 donuts near Sedgewick Lorna and Lois Sandra Erickson Polege, along Ph: 780-384-2030 with their Sedgewick c o u s i n Brenda (Mcemail: sedgewicknews@gmail.com Cracken) Eberl, have returned from a "bucket list" trip to Scotland. They had a wonderful time with great weather, beautiful scenery and buildings, and lots of family history explorations. From Edinburgh they went north to Aberdeen and Inverness before travelling south to Dumfries and Galloway. Along the way they managed to meet a few long lost cousins on the Gollan side of the family and found some of the locations and homes where their family lived. They had the opportunity to attend church services in two villages where their ancestors attended and found everyone so helpful and welcoming. The furthest back they found was their five times greatgrandparents, Herbert Calvert and Margaret Elliot and even the farmhouse where they lived! Riding the train was a great way to get around, and they also had some interesting times driving on the left and finding their way along the one lane country roads. They made it all the way down to the Mull of Galloway, the southernmost point of Scotland, and home of their McCracken great-grandparents. With a collection of over 1,600 photos, the trip was well documented! Thanks for sharing about your trip to your family's past! Last week the Lougheed Bakery, Diamond J, had a freezer malfunction and announced that all donuts would be 75 per cent off in order to sell all existing stock and prevent waste. Flagstaff, you did not disappoint. Line ups out the door and over 3,000 donuts sold within one day. Thank you! The Maertz boys have news: Chance is moving back home for the summer at the end of this week. And Adam got the great news that he has been selected for a power pilot scholarship through Air Cadets. This means that he has been chosen to attend cadet camp this summer and has the opportunity to earn a pilot's license. Congratulations on all your hard work to earn this opportunity, Adam! There's a pop up playground meet happening at Sedgewick Lake this Thursday morning. Join Danielle from the Family Resource Centre for songs, play, and crafts. We're so fortunate to have another event put on by the Wild Rose Co-op. Join them on Saturday, June 17, at the Sedgewick Home and Farm Center for Father's Day crafts. Sedgewick Ladies ‘Night Hawaiian Luau is coming up at the golf course on Wednesday, June 21. Come out for a night of golf, games, food, and fun!

Killam Rodeo weekend promises to be as exciting and event-filled as ever Leslie Cholowsky Editor

This year marks the 51st year for the Killam Indoor Rodeo. It “Ain’t our First” Rodeo, says the Killam and District Ag Society, and the fun starts on Friday at 7 p.m. with a full lineup of rodeo events at the Killam Memorial Arena. Besides the rodeo events, there will be special appearances by the Daring Diva Trick Riders, and organizers will be looking for pint-sized volunteers for the everpopular Mutton Busting. The rodeo continues on Saturday evening, starting at 5:30 p.m., with rough stock events going from 8 a.m. as well. Saturday morning features a pancake breakfast

Lineup starts at 10:15 a.m. near Fee & Sons Funeral Home, with an 11 a.m. start. The parade route will be closed to traffic before the parade, so come early, bring your lawn chairs, and get ready for some fun! RCMP advise of phone scam On June 13, Camrose RCMP are investigating reports from residents of suspicious phone calls where the suspect identifies themselves as an officer with the Camrose RCMP. The “officer” asks for personal details from the victim including their social insurance number. The suspect may advise the victim that there is a warrant for their arrest. The suspect appears to be using technology which makes the phone call appear to come from a local RCMP Detachment. At this time, RCMP have confirmed that at least one person has fallen victim to this crime. RCMP want to advise the public that police would never ask for your social insurance number or banking information. If you are unsure of the source of the phone call please call the detachment directly.

A black bear roaming in the bushes near Hardisty Hardisty Call Ricci with your news!

shop’s profits have grossed $210,700. All our money goes to various charities and we are thrilled. So Hardisty and area, pat yourselves on the back for all the donations you have dropped off for us at the thrift shop. Without your kindness we would not be as successful. You are the best community minded folks. Thank you! Our library had a good

turnout for a Father's Day Craft and we had pictures on Facebook. If you walk by the library you will notice that our plaque, thanking groups and businesses for our renovations is being spruced up and soon we will also be planting shrubs and grass, etc. We thank Vince Lehne, (Local Rentals) who cruised by with his machine that tapped down the sand so we could lay

cement squares around the plaque. This was done out of sheer kindness. He saw a need and stepped up to the plate; an amazing, community minded gentleman. Keep your eyes open for the new business that will be opening at the end of June, at the end of main street. Take care folks. Do a rain dance or pray really hard. We need moisture.

Well hello folks. It is late at night and the house is cooling down, just like the outside. We have a handy dandy small air conditioner in our bedroom and it helps cool down the main portion of the house. Our golden retriever loves to come in and lay within the blowing distance of the A/C and the ceiling fan. We have combed her hair with a fancy metal brush that helps get at all the deeper fine hairs that are there to keep a dog warm. She sure doesn't need that in the last few weeks. I feel sorry for her with that thick coat. I almost hated to throw out all that lovely, fine, thick fur. Too bad the birds have built all their nests because this hair would have made a fantastic bird's nest. We even found a tick in her ear hair and my man picked it off her with this cool, metal, forklike gadget to pull out ticks that the Vet gave us. It lifts the tick upwards and doesn't squeeze it so doesn't release it's toxin. That was my understanding, so I hope our dog will be okay. We can not give her that liquid product that you put on her back hairs because it interacts with our momma cats and the eight beautiful kittens that we have. Apparently that tick product can be lethal to cats. I have to call the vet and see what other safe products they might have. My nephew has a summer home in Cape Cod and a fenced-in yard. Their two big dogs have to be groomed each time they came back in the house because the ticks were so bad. Each time they found ticks on their fur. They don't have cats so I am sure they will tend to this gross issue. A couple of months ago I wrote about our neighbour sighting a mother cougar and cubs and he also brought us a picture of a big black bear. Well, guess what? That bear has now been seen using our

Hardisty history book and it opened on July 8, 1983. Wow, what absolute kindness and dedication they have shown. I wanted to list who they were, but we could not remember all of them. We did not want to hurt anyone's feeling. Just know that you are honoured and appreciated beyond words. Belva informed us at the meeting that in the last 23 years that our little thrift

farm as his or her stomping ground. Our dog went nuts the other night and kept running to the bushes near our big shop. No coyotes were howling, so I was presuming they were not wanting to meet with whatever was in the bushes. I thought bears slept in the evening, but I better do some reading. The neighbour nearer the Coronation highway also said her dog was extremely agitated and she had to put him in the house. With all these forest fires I imagine there is a lot of wildlife on the move. I would love a new bear rug, but maybe it is a female and she has cubs. I would hate to be cruel and shoot the bear. I used to buy bear rugs from a local hunter and gave them to my man to use as a rug, beside his bed. I am thrilled with animal furs, but not all my lady friends share the same sentiment. We have sheepskins, coyotes, and lots of beaver hides, but the dogs chewed up our big cow hide, our beautiful badger skins, and the bears mysteriously lost chunks of hair. Hmmm, wonder who did that? Our United Church patrons were busy on Saturday morning preparing a lovely pancake, sausage, and scrambled egg breakfast for all the people that arrived to check out the town wide garage sales. Our thrift shop on main street was celebrating 10 years that we have been at the present location. We had coffee, water, and free doughnuts to any one that popped in for a visit. On Monday night we had our annual thrift shop meeting. We re-elected our present executive, who were kind enough to continue in their posts. We thank Michele Routledge, President; Linda Stuart, Vice President; Gail Kobitzsch, Secretary; Lori Morrison, Treasurer; and Belva Dosdall for compiling and reviewing our financial records. We appreciate all our volunteers. We realized that there are volunteers among us that have been with the thrift shop for 40 years, since its inception. I checked with our

Gun Range Day brings out some first-timers Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Saturday, June 3, was National Range Day across Canada. Like many other ranges across Canada that day the Battle River Fish and Game Gun Club participated by hosting a shooting event at the range south of Forestburg. Members of the public were able to come out to the range and shoot a variety of firearms for free. Approximately 40 kids and adults had a fun time, many of them shooting a firearm for the first time ever. They started out with a firearms safety talk then got to try their hands at various firearms. There is another Family Fun Day shoot on Saturday June 17 at the Battle River Fish and Game Gun Range located six miles south of Forestburg at 40554 Rge Rd 152. PHOTO SUPPLIED

He really wanted to grow the options available here at KPS.” She says the Division approved the project and put it into their facility upgrades budget. “But then it was up to us to fund the appliances.” Nelson says prior to that, the Food Sciences classes split up, with students using the concession, sometimes the Teacher’s Lounge, and even the Kinder-

garten Room’s stove. The room in question was the Science Lab, a large multi-purpose space that was also used as an art room. Now the large classroom is split into two workspaces, with the science lab in the front, and the new kitchen area in the back. Nelson credits the Parent Advisory Council for securing the funding necessary, by putting a nomination in for the 100 Women Who Care Flagstaff County earlier this year. “We received a whopping $10,900, which enabled us to purchase all our appliances. That’s two dishwashers, two fridges, four stoves, and microwaves, along with some other pieces.” She adds, “We are extremely grate-

ful.” Nelson says the classroom is not only used for the junior high food science, but by other classes as well. She says both the Kindergarten and Grade 5 classes have recently used the room, which was completed in March, and in use by April. “Lots of pieces related to food science connect to our curriculum in other grades, like chemistry, and math. “The Division started the renovations in October/November, and we’re already using it.” She says the parent advisory council is already looking at using the space for its hot lunch program, too. As thanks to both the division and the generous donation, the school recently

hosted a strawberry tea, “Just to say thank you. We are very grateful.” Nelson says students baked the cakes served at the event. “It’s hard to raise $10,900. Thanks to our council, who ultimately did the application for the grant, and our presenters, Chelsea Nielsen and Reid MacKinnon, we were successful. “Our parent council is amazing, they are so supportive.” Nelson says staff worked hard to clean the space out prior to renovations starting, too. KPS nominated the 100 Women Who Care Flagstaff County for the Friends of BRSD award in gratitude for their support, and they recently accepted that prize from the division.

100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County recognized with Friends of BRSD award The Battle River School Division presented their Friends of the BRSD recognition awards last week. During the presentation, BRSD Board chair Karen Belich said, “100 Women Who Care is a Flagstaff County group who is doing remarkable work to support the wellbeing of their communities. “These women have banded together and contributed their own funds to a “pot” that can be used to support local initiatives. It’s a great concept, and it’s making a meaningful difference to Flagstaff County, including to our BRSD schools.” The 100 Women Who Care group was nominated because of a $10,000 donation they made to Killam Public School in support of the renovation and outfitting of a new Foods Lab. Belich added, “But since that nomination was made, the group has also been considering who they are going to support next – so we understand there is likely more good news for schools ahead.” The board welcomed co-founders Joanne McMahon and Tanya Piche to their meeting to accept the award on behalf of the entire group, who number well over 100 women. “Here with us today are two representatives of the group – we are sorry that we couldn’t have all 100 of you, but we are very pleased to welcome Joanne McMahon and Tanya Piche to our meeting today.” Afterwards, McMahon said, “Tanya and I were honoured to represent our 100 Women Who Care organization in Camrose today. As Holly (Co-founder Holly Bovencamp) always says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” (African proverb)

Guest:What does healthy social media usage look like? Based on my interactions with those under 35, I have made the following generalization: Young people today are increasingly eschewing meaningful friendships, intimate relationships, having a steady job, and being connected to a religion and a community in favour of spending a lot of time on social media. It is well known that a healthy eating habit is based on moderation. Even though we often do not follow "eating in moderation," we understand its importance because we have experienced what happens when we consume excessive amounts of sugar, carbs, and alcohol, resulting in fatigue, weight gain, and a gaunt appearance. Furthermore, we are constantly educated about the link between our diet and chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. I remember a time not long ago when children running around in backyards, parks and playing street hockey was a common sight. This stopped when the Xbox console was introduced to the market on November 15, 2001. Children, especially teens, began solitarily playing video games in their room or parent's basement, which many find less stressful than socializing. Aside from younger generations not developing social skills, I believe social media's most significant damage is that romantic relationships are no longer pursued. Rather than risk being judged and rejected by the cute girl at Starbucks, the easier option is to sit at home scrolling through social media feeds, dating apps, and visiting porn sites, thus avoiding rejection. Overuse of social media diverts people from real-life experiences, especially those in their formative adolescent years - ages 12 to 21 - resulting in a lack of fulfillment and genuine relationships, which social media undermines. While Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are great platforms for keeping in touch with family and friends and connecting with like-minded individuals, these sites create stress by encouraging us to project an idealized version of ourselves. We also tend to compare ourselves to the idealized version of others, thus feeling we are not "good enough," and hence withdraw rather than take the risk of putting ourselves out there. The life-damaging consequences of using social media to escape from real life are that you are not present and engaged with your surroundings. As a result, much of life passes you by, and you miss out on many things, from the opportunity to form meaningful relationships, be part of a local supportive community to learning from social interactions. Next time you are out to dinner, look at other tables. You will likely see people staring at their phones instead of talking to each other. Like a healthy eating habit (READ: Healthy food use, as opposed to eating to suppress your feelings.) revolves around eating in moderation, healthily using social media requires moderation, which can be achieved by making yourself aware of the following:

•Time management Establish boundaries and specific times for social media use to prevent it from interfering with your real life. My social media usage is limited to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays to Saturdays (Sundays are my 'no social media' days.), and I often schedule my posts and content. •Focusing on quality interactions. Refrain from passively consuming social media content. Instead, be mindful of your social media engagements. Use social media to engage with real-life family and friends, learn something new, or pursue hobbies as opposed to mindlessly scrolling through feeds. •Make your offline life your priority. Engage in activities that promote real-world connections. Spend time with family and friends, participate in community events, pursue hobbies, and explore new interests. Spend 90 per cent of your time in the real world and 10 per cent in the digital world. •Be selective regarding whom you follow. Keep your social media feeds up-to-date with your values and interests. Engage with accounts that inspire, educate, and bring joy to your online life. If an account makes you feel inadequate or overwhelmed, unfollow it. Addiction to social media is real. Like a drug, hearing your phone ping a notification or seeing a like on your Instagram post triggers the reward center in your brain. Social media companies know precisely what they are doing from a neurological perspective; it is called intermittent reinforcement. Casinos do this with slot machines, and you are doing the same when you are constantly checking your social media feeds, looking for likes and comments to your posts—it is a dopamine hit. The key to healthily using social media is to use it to enhance your life, much like you should use food to support your health, which exists 100 per cent offline. Ultimately, it is your decision whether to live most of your life in the real world, navigating all its harshness and experiencing all its beauty, or withdrawing to the digital world because it "feels safe." OBITUARIES

Gordon “Gord” William Pennycook

(September 12, 1946 June 4, 2023) Gordon William Pennycook was the second son of seven children born September 12, 1946. He grew up on a farm near Carrot River, Saskatchewan.

As early as 14 years of age, Gord knew he wasn’t going to be a farmer. He wanted to learn about mechanics and so, a few years later Grandpa and Gord decided it would be best if he left the farm and got a job. Gordon moved to southern Saskatchewan, close to his Uncle Bill, and obtained a job on Wells’ farm outside of Carnduff. It was in this area where he met the love of his life, Mary Carol Ann Douglas of Glen Ewen, Saskatchewan.

Gord joined the Navy in August 1964 and hopped on the train heading for basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. January 1965 was the beginning of 39 months of tech school at Esquimalt on Vancouver Island. Obviously, Carol wasn’t letting Gord get away as she followed him to the island and convinced Gord that they needed to get married. Carol went back to Saskatchewan to plan the wedding and they were

married April 7, 1966. Not long after, Constance Lynn arrived and in December 1967, Anthony Leigh showed up three months early. Gord transferred to the Bonaventure in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and his family went with him to Dartmouth when Tony was strong enough to move. Gord was released in August 1971 and this is when he began his life in Alberta. The Pennycooks moved five more times after arriving in Alberta;

FAITH COLUMN He conquered “Christ, our Passover lamb, was sacrificed” (1 Cor. 5:7). In the likeness of a lamb, innocent and without blemish, without any sin by birth or deed, Jesus was sacrificed for us. We also need to trust God. We are saved by the way He provides. As the apostle Peter said, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). When looking at people in a busy street downtown, it seems like they are slaves to something, doesn’t it? What do they work for? What do they live for? Looking at your life, what is its purpose? Without God, we are slaves of

the great Egypt of sin. We are prisoners taken to death camps. Our days are numbered, and we have no hope of eternity without Him. Cry out for deliverance. Cry out for your redemption. God wants to give you today the forgiveness and peace that only He has to offer. Don’t leave it for later. Open your heart to Jesus now and allow Him to be the Lord and Saviour of your life. In this world we will still suffer, but we have Jesus (John16:33). Jesus overcame for us, and He gives us strength on a daily basis so we too can overcome. Nothing can separate us from Him, and by His strength, grace, and mercy, we can overcome

everyday (Rom. 8:37-39). If we fall, we will rise by His powerful hand. Very soon we will open our arms with shouts of victory when we see our beloved Saviour returning in glory as King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev. 19:16). Praise the Lord! Given the incredible promises of such a blessed hope, how will you respond to Him who gave His life for you? He is interceding on your behalf in heaven right now. You wouldn’t exchange God’s promises for the temporary things this earth provides, would you? Christ is calling. He is calling your heart. Study the Bible, pray, walk with God, learn more about prophecy,

OBITUARIES Randy Sherman

Dec. 11, 1943 June 4, 2023 Randy passed away surrounded by family and friends at the age of 79. Randy was raised at Middle Falls, a Provincial Park bordering Canada and Minnesota, that his stepfather and mother managed. This is where he learned the morals of hard work and its benefits; how to gather wood for winter heat; how to swim; how to drive; how to socialize (with the tourists that visited). Thunder Bay, Ontario, was where he settled until heading west. During his teenage years, he developed a passion for cars and mechanics. Later in life it carried on into trucks, campers, and motorhomes. When he told a

story he knew when it was by the vehicle he was driving at the time. In 1967 he became a journeyman ironworker. One of his previous jobs was a seaman on a Laker boat on Lake Superior, but ironworking was his calling. Randy became a father in the early 70s to son Derald and daughter Tanya. His work choice "boomed him out" travelling to where the jobs were. He worked in New York (on the Trade Towers), from there headed west working mostly at mines and pulp mills in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and into BC. A job in Elkford, BC, lasted long enough for him to become a member of the snowmobile club where they sledded the top of the mountains. A blind date arranged by mutual friends brought Randy and Jaki together. They shared 32 married years of love and compassion. The first 10 at the beach house. Randy took advantage

of living on the water and bought a boat, a 35 ft. converted fish boat. Many hours were enjoyed cruising around the islands fishing, prawning and "camping out" on the water. Randy's final jobs before retirement were in California. Living in their motorhome the jobs took them to many places across the state. The longest was helping build Petco Park in San Diego. He became superintendent and overlooked many sites at one time. The most structural demanding was retro-fitting Pasadena City Hall. While in San Diego, Yuma became a popular destination. There his new friendships developed into a social gathering in Phoenix during the Nascar Races (Tony Stewart's dad was there, too.) Randy loved riding and rock climbing in the desert. The more challenging the climb the more he enjoyed it. He went from riding his dune buggy, to

a side by side razor, to a Geo tracker (that he put a lift kit in.) His retirement in Sedgewick was never a regret. With all the support and everlasting friendships made in Sedgewick and area he couldn't have found a better "resting place.” He never wrote that book of his life but shared it with the stories he told. Randy's love for life reflected in the friendships he made. His caring and generosity, sense of humor, the

hugs he gave, his helping hand... will be greatly missed by family and friends He is survived by his loving wife Jaki and children Derald (Nicole), Tanya, Michelle (Kelvin), Bernice (Jason), grandchildren Troy, Kaelen, Stephanie, Austin, Claudia, Tyler, Krystal, Z a c h a r y , Amanda, Maleah, brother Ray (Betsy), special cousin Sharyn, in-laws Nora (Bill), Barb, Brian (Diane), Dan (Angie), Kerry (Brenda) many nieces,

nephews and cousins Come join us for Randy's Celebration of Life June 17th 2 p.m. at the Sedgewick Community Hall, 4809-47 St. Memorial donations in Randy's memory can be made to Killam Hospital. Peace Officer Continued from A4

with 10-plus-hour days. Alvarado says the book work is hard, “It’s been a long time since I’ve been at school,” but the physical training was very rigorous as well. “I’d come home bruised and sore some days.” Overall, he says he did a lot better than he thought, finishing near the top of the class. But graduating the course didn’t make him a peace officer, that doesn’t happen until he’s hired and is appointed by the Province. Then he started looking around at what jobs were available. During that process, a friend told him he’d just applied to Flagstaff County. Alvarado says he looked up the job posting, and really liked what he saw, so he applied. “I got an interview, and then a few weeks later, got notified that the position was mine.” Alvarado must go through a

three-month probation period, during that time he will work with Flagstaff County Peace Officer Skyler Zelinski. “Flagstaff County is different for me, obviously, with a lot of smaller communities. I’m getting used to a different governance model than Lac la Biche. But I’m really liking all the communities.” Alvarado started last Monday, and he’s enjoying the work, the company, and all the people he’s met so far in the region. For now, he’s staying in Flagstaff County during his days on, and returning to his wife and three children in Lac la Biche on days off. He says they will definitely consider moving here, but that decision will be one made jointly with his wife. “It would be a big change. My wife works full time, and my three kids, ages six, 13, and 15, are in school.” Alvarado says one of his favourite things was doing fire station tours with students, or doing presenta-

tions at the schools, so he loves Flagstaff County’s Positive Tickets. “It’s an awesome program.” Alvarado isn’t in uniform quite

yet, but as soon as his appointment comes through he will be. If you see him around, make sure to welcome him to the area.

Willow Hill Designs. It’s a catchy moniker that rolls gently off the tongue. But this formidable husband-and-wife home décor business didn’t always carry that smoothsounding handle and it wasn’t always so well-established. Circa 2011, the business was known simply as “Designs by K” and it was only just getting started. Back then, Karen Wolbeck had a “well-behaved kiddo at home” in the Heisler area and husband Dennis was working shift work at the coal mine in Paintearth County. “I was looking for things to fill my time,” Karen recalls. “Dennis was adamant that he didn’t want to be involved in my little projects, but he couldn’t help getting his hands busy with the woodworking (especially when he saw me using his skill saw and cutting boards on the ground). Something about ‘safety’ concerns made him step in.” Their projects started out small and simple small signs, boards, simple designs, a little bit of glass etching, all done with vinyl and stencils. Soon, the couple was getting busier and busier with custom orders. They participated in approximately eight markets a year, more so around the Christmas season, completing orders and gifts for family and friends. “The majority of our work was local, word of mouth,” Karen says. “We started a small Facebook page, however, the majority of our traffic was local within Flagstaff County. We have always felt supported in our area.” Up until then, the Wolbecks had been doing all of their woodworking outside. “On one particularly blustery day (i.e. minus-25 degrees and snow), we decided we couldn’t work outside anymore. We converted a portion of our garage into a little heated workshop.” The couple would continue to do their painting, staining, and assembly right on the kitchen island, but there was no turning back for this creative duo. They eventually bought their first CNC machine to assist with their manufacturing process. And then came the name change, which was hotly debated. “Finding a name that we both liked was tricky to be honest, we spent more time debating the name of our business than we did our firstborn!”

says Karen. Inspiration struck when they looked out the window. “Our house is built on a bit of a hill and there was a giant willow tree in front! Thus, Willow Hill Designs was born,” explains Karen. These days, a decade later, Willow Hill Designs prides itself on quality, craftsmanship and colour, with a focus on wholesale products. “We create handmade signs and DIY kits for customers across Canada. So we aren't your typical sign shop. “Not only do we work with individual customers to create custom signs, but we’re also stocking retail stores with our colourful collection of signs as well,” Karen notes. Dennis adds: “We started out by creating do-ityourself craft kits for workshops and paint parties. And we are proud to say we have grown that collection to over 500 designs.” Along with a five-foot-by-10-foot CNC router for large custom-cut designs, the Wolbecks use two 24-by-18-inch laser cutters/engravers for fine engraving, personalization and detailed designs, as well as a four-foot-by-eight-foot UV printer for

permanent printed designs direct to wood/metal, plastic or other substrates. All machines work cohesively together to create custom one-of-a-kind pieces for everyone. Dennis, who has since left his job at the mine, and Karen are now the parents of three beautiful children who fill their lives with “love, happiness and a tad bit of chaos.” As for the future, Dennis and Karen are set on aiming high, much like their namesake giant willow tree. “The future has us looking beyond Flagstaff County, reaching beyond Alberta's borders to stock retail stores with high-quality handmade signs is a goal of ours,” Karen explains. “We will always call Flagstaff County our home. We want Willow Hill Designs to be known Canada-wide.” For more information, find Willow Hill Designs on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, visit: willowhilldesigns.com, and be sure to watch the video on The Community Press website thecommunitypress.com
