The Write Group at the right time KERRY ANDERSON What began as a small group of writers from Tofield and area 36 years ago, has continued to grow slowly and steadily and now boasts 38 members. Mainy a solitary activity, writing is affected very little by Covid-19 isolations and social distancing. The Write Group meets both online and in person monthly at Tofield Council Chambers. “Our members write, share and talk about writing,” said group leader Shawn Urban. “We have been around since (about) 1984 and have had an online presence since 2012.” Urban said the club was founded by Paula Hallett, and veteran Tofield Mercury columnist Carol Livingstone.
Livingstone, who writes “Loose Ends” weekly for the local newspaper, was the leader of the group for almost 30 years when she handed the reins over to Urban in 2013. “The idea was to have other writers to share our work with and talk about our craft and learn by doing,” said Livingstone. “All very casual. I led the group for many years but quit several years ago and Shawn Urban took over. He's a teacher and very tech smart.” Urban said during the pandemic the group continues to connect using

tions; engage in writing exercises; provide writing prompts for the intervals between meetings; discuss writing craft, including new resources we discover; and review observances, local events, prompts and competitions specific to the month.” The substitute teacher lives in Tofield and has been writing for four decades, since he was 11. “Each one of us is actively writing and learning,” says Urban. “Some of us are beginners. Some of us are published, with copies of our books in the Tofield School and C.W. Sears libraries. “We range from teens to octogenarians. We write fiction and nonfiction in poetic and prosaic genres. What we have in common is that we enjoy writing, sharing our writ-
ing, gathering with other local writers, and helping each other out with advice, critiques, encouragement and accountability.”
