Stubbs ready to take on Trudeau on the campaign trail
BY JOHN MATHER
Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs said she is ready for the upcoming election and quickly came out swinging at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“One thing that has become glaringly obvious about Justin Trudeau since he became Prime Minister is that he is all about politics, all the time,” said Stubbs in an email Aug. 16.
“Only months ago, he claimed he wasn’t interested in pursuing an election, and he has been able to count on the Bloc and the NDP to prop up his policy and legislative agenda in Parliament, so his claims about the need for this election are baloney. It is clearly just a pursuit to increase his
own political power to try to win a majority government.” Stubbs said she felt the election is a waste of $500 million of taxpayLakeland MP Shannon Stubbs ers’ money for no real reason. But, she added, she was ready to take on the reckless spending Liberals and looked forward to an opportunity to defeat the Liberals and get them out of government.
“I hope Canadians in every region won’t give him a pass for plunging the country into this selfish, self-centred election while families and communities struggle with severe drought, forest fires, trying to save their businesses and get back to normal,” Stubbs declared. “Rural communities are struggling with harvest coming up, and families and communities are preparing for kids to get to school after the past challenging year and a half.”
She added there may still be health risks from the pandemic for elderly and vulnerable people.
Finally she added the situation in Afghanistan is escalating where interpreters and other Afghans who worked with the Canadian Armed Forces against the Taliban for human rights, freedom and democracy, are now being left behind with their lives and the whole country at risk.
“Trudeau’s obvious, cynical grab for powerat-any-cost should trouble everyone,” explained Stubbs. “But unfortunately it isn’t surprising – it is exactly why he has broken almost all of his major promises, and has been embroiled in one ethics scandal and corruption after another.”
“We are ready to go in Lakeland, and as always, I, and our team, will work hard to earn every single vote. I am proud to serve and to represent the people of Lakeland, and hope I can secure their trust and confidence again.”
Four fight it out for Lakeland seat
BY JOHN MATHER
With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visiting Governor General Mary Simon on Aug. 15 to dissolve parliament and call for a general election Sept. 20, it appears there’s a full slate of candidates to contest the Lakeland seat.
The seat is currently held by Conservative Party of Canada member Shannon Stubbs who serves as her party’s critic for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.
First elected in the 2015 general election, Stubbs won her riding again in 2019 with 83.9 percent of the votes, making Canadian history for receiving the highest percentage of votes for a female candidate.
Vying against Stubbs for the Lakeland seat this time around are John Turvey for the Liberal Party; Fred Sirett, for the Maverick Party; and Desiree Bissonnette, for the New Democrats.
As the election draws nearer the Leader will reach out to all the candidates for interviews and position statements. We will also keep the public up to date with any all candidate meetings taking place in the riding.
The Lakeland riding takes in Bruderheim, Lamont, Chipman, Andrew and Mundare in Lamont County, along with the larger communities of Bonnyville, St. Paul, and the Alberta side of Lloydminster.
In 2016 it had a population of 108,451 an increase of 3.7 per cent from 2011.

Led by Tom Hrehorets and Trudy Harrold, a committee has been formed to look at erecting a memorial to honour the 17 young people who lost their lives in that tragedy and the survivors who have lived-on to carry those memories. Work is being undertaken to fundraise for this $35,000 project. As the 60th year commemoration of the Chipman and Lamont Bus-Train accident passed quietly with the COVID events of 2020, a project is being undertaken to honour that milestone.
