Continuing intercommunal clashes in the disputed Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan have left more than 50 people dead including two peacekeepers, the UN said on Monday. Armed youth from rival factions of the Dinka ethnic group have been battling over the location of an administrative boundary in the oil-rich region, claimed by both countries, according to media reports. The UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) reported that clashes erupted on Saturday in the Nyinkuac, Majbong and Khadian areas, leading to casualties and the evacuation of civilians to its bases. Refuge from violence UNISFA is engaging with local authorities to verify the numbers of those killed, injured, and displaced, noting that 52 civilians have lost their lives while 64 others are said to be gravely wounded. The Mission has allowed all persons in imminent threat of danger to seek refuge in some of its camps, in line with its mandate to protect civilians. Peacekeepers under attack On Sunday, peacekeepers were transporting affected civilians from a UNISFA base to a hospital when they came under heavy fire. A peacekeeper from Pakistan was killed, and four uniformed personnel and a local civilian were injured. The incident happened one day after the UNISFA base in Agok came under attack, which the mission repelled.

An activist holds anti-death penalty signs outside the US Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. The UN human rights chief has expressed deep regret over the execution of a prisoner in the United States on Thursday night through the country’s first ever use of nitrogen asphyxiation as a method of implementing the death penalty. “I deeply regret the execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith in Alabama despite serious concerns that this novel and untested method of suffocation may amount to torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment,” said Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, OHCHR. Convicted of murder in 1988, Mr. Smith, 58, had been sentenced to death in the state of Alabama. An attempt to carry out the execution in 2022, failed. Last week, the Human Rights Council had called for Alabama to halt Mr. Smith’s execution and to refrain from taking steps towards any other executions using nitrogen asphyxiation. Amid UNWRA funding crisis, desperate Gazans scour trucks for food As the UN chief prepares to meet representatives from countries who donate to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) late on Tuesday following allegations of collusion with Hamas, the UN health agency, WHO, reiterated that now was not the time to abandon the people of Gaza. Despite ongoing Israeli bombardment prompted by Hamas-led attacks on 7 October that left some 1,200 dead in Israel and more than 250 hostages, UNRWA continues to provide lifesaving aid in Gaza to more than two million civilians. The war has killed at least 26,637 Palestinians in Gaza and left 65,387 injured, according to the enclave’s health authorities. The Israeli military has reported 218 soldiers killed and 1,267 injured in Gaza. As the largest humanitarian agency in the enclave, UNRWA also operates shelters for over one million people, providing food, water and healthcare services, while also playing the key role of facilitating the work of other UN and partner agencies there. “The shelters, the health centres and everything else is provided in Gaza through UNWRA,” said Christian Lindmeier, spokesperson for the UN World Health Organization (WHO). Repeating the words of WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Mr. Lindmeier appealed to donors not to suspend funding to UNWRA “at this critical moment. Cutting off funding will only hurt the people of Gaza who desperately need support.”

St. Lucia – Taiwan to Fund Independence Celebrations The Republic of China’s government is providing funding for Saint Lucia’s 45th anniversary of independence festivities (Taiwan). St. Lucia’s Independence Day theme for the year 2024 is “Douvan Ansanm: Building a Nation Through Unity, Resilience and Creativity”. The celebration spans from January 28 to March 17. On February 22, 1979, Saint Lucia gained independence from Great Britain. The government of Saint Lucia received a cheque for fireworks and banners to be used during celebrations commemorating

the island nation’s 45th anniversary of independence on January 22, 2024, from Taiwan’s ambassador to Saint Lucia, H.E. Peter Chia-Yen Chen. Ambassador Chen stated, “As Saint Lucia is about to celebrate its 45th anniversary of independence in strengthening the nation’s unity and identity, Taiwan is more than happy to support the firework display on the evening of 21st February 2024, and to sponsor 250 hand-waving flags and 80 large flags produced in Taiwan and will be soon shipped to Saint Lucia to be part of the celebrations.”

Ambassador Chen additionally mentioned: “Taiwan will continue to collaborate with Hon. Prime Minister Pierre and the Government of Saint Lucia, steering our nations towards a brighter and more prosperous tomorrow.” The Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has been consistently supported, and for that, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and the Youth Economy, as well as Minister of Justice and National Security, expressed gratitude.

NYC – Attorney and Son Charged with Massive Immigration Fraud

A Bronx, New York-based immigration attorney Kofi Amankwaa and his son, Kofi Amankwaa Jr., have been accused of carrying out a “large-scale” immigration fraud scheme on Caribbean and other migrants. The allegations are contained in a complaint that was unsealed by the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, and Michael Alfonso, the Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Newark Field Office of the US Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). “As alleged, Kofi Amankwaa, an immigration attorney, and his son, Kofi Amankwaa Jr., sought to make a mockery of the US immigration system by conspiring to defraud the United States and commit immigration fraud,” said Williams, whose father is a Jamaican-born physician. “Amankwaa and his son allegedly exploited the Violence Against Women Act — a law that allows non-citizen victims of domestic abuse a path to lawful permanent residence status — for their financial gain by falsely claiming that their clients were victims of domestic abuse,” he added. “Thanks to the dedicated actions of our law enforcement partners and the career prosecutors of this office, the defendants must now answer for these crimes.” Alfonso said: “Kofi Amankwaa is charged with deceitful practices, whereby he

allegedly victimized clients who relied on his legal assistance with their immigration process. “HSI is committed to protecting the applicants, petitioners, and requestors of US citizenship who, unfortunately, are often at risk of falling for scams or fraud,” he said. “HSI is thankful for the collaboration in this investigation with other Department of Homeland Security components, as well as other federal agencies, who continue to help us combat document and benefit fraud.” According to the allegations in the complaint, from September 2016 to November 2023, Amankwaa, 69, and Amankwaa, Jr, 37, met with clients and directed them to sign fraudulent Form I-360 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Petitions, falsely stating that the clients were abused by their US citizen children. The complaint alleges that Amankwaa also signed the petitions, under penalty of perjury, as the attorney preparer. “The defendants used the filing of the fraudulent Form I-360 VAWA Petitions, among other filings, as a basis to request advance parole travel documents for their clients — documents that enable individuals without legal status in the United States to travel abroad temporarily and return,” the complaint says. “The defendants then directed their clients, upon obtaining the advance parole travel documents, to travel abroad and return to the United States,” it adds. The complaint says the defendants used the fraudulently procured advance parole as a basis for their clients to apply for lawful permanent resident status. “The defendants carried out this illegal scheme knowing that their clients had not, in fact, been abused by their children or without ever asking whether any such abuse occurred,” the complaints said. “Moreover, the defendants were often un-

successful in obtaining lawful permanent resident status for their clients because the clients’ immigration applications were denied on the basis of fraud, among other reasons. “The defendants typically charged their clients $6,000 for their services, plus administrative fees,” it adds. Williams said that in November 2023 following numerous complaints by clients regarding the fraudulent abuse allegations,

Amankwaa’s license to practice law in the State of New York was suspended. He said the father and son, both of South River, New Jersey, are each charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and to commit immigration fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, and one count of immigration fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. T&T – PM Rowley, We Will Overcome Gang Violence

Prime Minister Keith Rowley claims that although crime, especially gang violence, is a long-standing issue in Trinidad and Tobago, it will eventually be solved. During the opening of the recently renovated Balisier House on Tranquility Street in Port of Spain, Dr. Rowley stated that Dr. Eric Williams, the nation’s first prime minister, also encountered the issue of gangs. Still, he overcame it

and used it as a source of pride. “The nation had the same challenge of having a requirement to steer our young people, like I was, away from admiring and falling prey to other people,” he remarked. Laventille, Belmont, Tunapuna, San Fernando, and other places were home to steelpan gangs, according to him. However, firearms have replaced gas, bolts, and razors as the means of combat for young people. He stated, “Dr. Williams came out and embraced the steelpan movement as our culture and asked the business community to provide sponsorship to steel bands.” He continued, “And that took PNM and Dr Williams understanding how to get from gang warfare into where we are today. It took time but it was based on an understanding.” After being accepted, he claimed, the steelpan came to be seen as a source of national pride and an essential component of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture. Rowley also remembered how, while he was still living in Mason Hall, Tobago, at the age of ten or eleven, he looked up to a gang member

who had come back to the hamlet from Laventille. He expressed his desire to dress and walk like the man he sees as a role model. He mentioned that his interest in gangs had faded by the time he started secondary school and mentioned that a man he had previously respected had been executed for murder. Alluding to Williams’s vision, Rowley stated that the PNM brought about the idea that no one should be denied an education, it reclaimed Chaguaramas from US forces, it bought the sugar estates from Tate and Lyle. It sustained the industry for 25 years, and it transformed the nation from collecting pennies on a barrel of oil to controlling it. PNM’s history was Trinidad and Tobago’s history, he declared. Rowley also suggested that he might retire, claiming that he felt compelled to return home and spend more time with his family because his wife Sharon had retired at the end of 2023. Colm Imbert and Rohan Sinanan, the previous speakers, discussed how Rowley would lead the party to victory in the general election of 2025. Rowley is the deputy political leader.

The Pinnacle – Game Changing Luxury Skyscraper Development in Montego Bay Prime Minister Andrew Holiness at the groundbreaking event on Saturday, January 20, 2024, declared “What I have seen displayed here today quite dearly, is that you have set a new bar for quality and you have aptly described it as the Pinnacle”. Merging Jamaica’s heritage with cosmopolitan flair, it beckons Jamaicans returning home and international guests seeking unmatched luxury in a beloved destination. This is how Yangsen Li, CEO of LCH Development Limited described the project. Prime Minister Holiness agrees with CEO Yangsen Li, stating the development will cement Jamaica’s brand in the lifestyle segment of the hospitality market. It will add a new dimension to our tourism and I am very happy for that because our tourism product which has carried us for at least 50 years must diversify, it must move into other segments, into other areas and make significant marks there. The Pinnacle will be the Caribbean’s tallest building which Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlet welcomed. He said it “enables us to respond to all of the millennials because the millennials are looking for a different kind of product”. The Minister went on to remark, “We are taking it to another dimension with this kind of density that is approaching from a 28-story building with a mix of business models

As prime minister and head of the PNM, Rowley had already said that this would be his last term in office. “So, when these fellas get up here and come talking about ‘next election’ and ‘2030,’ they not speaking for me eh? I spoke for myself already and I spoke in front of a parson and I signed for that.” “This (the refurbished building) is for the young people and the generations that are unborn. And what we have done here tonight is to create an iconic location, an iconic building symbolizing the successful history of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.” As hundreds of PNM supporters assembled on a closed Tranquility Street, there was a buzz of excitement surrounding Rowley’s speech. Following the speeches, a time capsule containing a letter from Rowley to the future prime minister as well as PNM souvenirs were buried on the eastern end of the property, along with several balisier plants. On January 24, the party commemorated its 68th anniversary, and as part of the celebration, the building was formally reopened.

which is the new model of the period as tourism tried to balance short-term to longterm residency with the important elements of supply. I think nowhere else in the Caribbean has this model.” Minister Bartlet went on to express his appreciation saying “I want to indicate with particular delight that LCH Development has chosen Montego Bay to become the first of its incursions in the tourism industry. And what an incursion it is, providing for us something that is being called The Pinnacle, the address that we will be in the future.” Prime Minister Holiness praised the partners of LCH Development and pledged that the government will work to provide the infrastructure to support the industry and the community to ensure maximum benefit. He referred to housing for the hospitality industry workers as a priority. The Prime Minister for the groundbreaking

approved for Jamaica in the design and development. He referred to LCH saying “You are not only breaking ground today, but you are doing something that is groundbreaking in Jamaica.” Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals International who was at the groundbreaking event remarked that the development was “a game-changing development”. He seemed to speak for those present, it is indeed a game changer. Towers One and Two are set to rise first, with completion anticipated in 36 months. Construction of Towers Three and Four will commence a year later. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2028. Yangsen Li, CEO of LCH remarked’ “We are committed to balancing this development with preservation in terms of nature. Our project isn’t just construction, it is a promise to honor and preserve the natural beauty that brought us here in the first place.”

Haitians Suffering Gang Violence Desperate after Court Blocks Kenyan Forces

Shortly after a Kenyan court barred the UN-backed police force from entering Haiti to assist in combating gangs, the beleaguered Caribbean nation’s radio stations were inundated with calls. Since the decision on Friday, there has been an increase in uncertainty and dread, and as gangs firmly establish their hold over the capital of Haiti and beyond, there have been unprecedented levels of violence. Diego Da Rin was forewarned by the International Crisis Group, “Absent a robust external mission that would be deployed very soon, we are facing quite a tragic scenario in Haiti.”

Approximately 80% of Haiti’s capital is controlled by gangs, and in recent weeks, these gangs have assaulted and taken over formerly calm areas, leaving scores dead or injured and raising fears that they could soon take over the whole city of Port-auPrince. According to the most current UN figures, the number of recorded deaths in Haiti increased by more than twice to almost 4,500, while the number of reported kidnappings increased by more than 80% to almost 2,500 instances. According to a UN study this week, the National Police of Haiti is losing personnel at “an alarming rate,” and the gangs

that remain control those who are still in service. Last year, more than 1,600 cops were let go from the department, and 48 more were reportedly slain. Furthermore, severe gang fighting has destroyed equipment that the international community supplied to support an understaffed police agency. As of mid-November, just 21 of the 47 armored vehicles were in service, with 19 “severely damaged during anti-gang operations or broken down,” stated a recent report. According to the statement, the remaining seven cars “are permanently disabled.” “The situation has gone overboard. Enough is enough,” remarked a guy venting on Radio Caraibes over Friday’s judgment, identifying himself as Pastor Malory Laurent. “Every day, you feel there is no hope.” The Kenyan government declared it will challenge the decision. It is unclear, however, how long that may take and if other nations who committed to sending smaller forces to support the multinational operation would think about going it alone. States including the Bahamas, Jamaica, Belize, Burundi, Chad, and Senegal were among those preparing to deploy troops.

“All I will say at this time is that this is a major setback for the people of Haiti who yearn to have a stable country to live in,” said Roosevelt Skerrit, the prime minister of Dominica and the former leader of Caricom, a Caribbean economic organization that has recently dispatched teams to Haiti in an effort to quell the turmoil. “The decision of the Kenyan court warrants an emergency meeting of the friends of Haiti to determine with the Haitian people the plan B.” Both the offices of Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis did not respond to queries seeking comment. As it waits for news from Jamaica, the trade group is expected to meet shortly to examine the ramifications of the verdict, according to Hugh Todd, the foreign minister of Guyana, who spoke to a news media press. “We will have to see if there is any legal space for us to operate,” He remarked, asking whether there were any alternative legal choices available that would enable Kenya and other nations to proceed. Upon the court’s decision, UN representatives have remained silent.

United States Reiterates Support for Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti The United States’ commitment to the Haitian people remains unwavering. We reaffirm our support of ongoing international efforts to deploy a Multinational Security Support mission for Haiti, as requested by Haiti and authorized by UN Security Council Resolution 2699, and renew our calls for the international community to urgently provide support for this mission. The United States acknowledges the ruling by the Republic of Kenya’s High Court regarding the deployment of Kenyan police in support of the Multinational Security Support mission to Haiti and the Govern

ment of Kenya’s stated intent to challenge this ruling. It is urgent that the international community respond to the unprecedented levels of gang violence and destabilizing forces preying upon the Haitian people. At the same time, we call for the restoration of democratic order through an inclusive political process in Haiti. We continue to urge Haitian stakeholders to reach consensus on power-sharing and inclusive governance. The only legitimate path to long-term peace and stability is through free and fair elections.

Haiti- Six Kidnapped Nuns Released The archbishop of Port-au-Prince notified a major news outlet that the two other persons and six nuns who were abducted in Haiti last week had been freed. All members of the group were discharged late, although Archbishop Max Leroy Mésidor reported that everyone was in good health. “Thanks to God for helping us,” he expresses.

He refused to comment on whether the ransom was paid or to reveal any further information, such as the identity of the perpetrator. Religious authorities harshly criticized the government in a letter in response to the most recent high-profile kidnapping, pointing out that it was doing little to stop the increase in gang-related violence in Haiti.

Boston – Reparations Task Force to Investigate Impact of Slavery

Boston has announced that committees have been formed to look into the city’s past with slaves and to evaluate suggestions for reparations. The Boston Reparations Task Force, according to Mayor Michelle Wu, will investigate and record the city’s historical connections to the transatlantic slave trade, the institution of slavery, and its legacy. Mayor Michelle Wu claimed, “I’m grateful

to these teams of historians who will serve our city by documenting Boston’s role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the myriad legacies of slavery that continue to impact the daily lives of our city’s communities.” The impact that slavery had on the city’s descendants up until the present will be one of the historical topics that researchers will look into. In December 2022, the Boston City Coun-

cil decided to establish a task team to look at the historical and contemporary effects of slavery in the city. For years, campaigners in Boston have demanded that the city make amends for its involvement in slavery. The first Black state senator from Massachusetts, Bill Owens, originally put out the notion of reparations in the 1980s. In 2022, he passed away.

NYC – Schomburg Center in ‘Transcribe-A-Thon’ of Schomburg’s Letters

On January 24, 2024, approximately thirty volunteers convened in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem for what one of them called a “nerd party.” The occasion, which was formally named “Transcribe-a-thon: Remaking the World of Arturo Schomburg,” planned to transcribe a few of the historian’s correspondence and fell on the 150th anniversary of his birth.

“Every year I mark his birthday,” stated one of the Schomburg Center’s volunteers, Vanessa K. Valdés. “So, I’m so incredibly honored to be part of a crowd of people who are celebrating him.” Born in Puerto Rico in 1874, Arturo Schomburg is credited with being one of the pioneers of the academic field known as Black studies. “There would be no field of Black studies had it not been for these earlier generations who built the collections, saved the materials, documented what was going on,” stated Laura Helton, one of the event’s co-organizers and an assistant professor of history and English at the University of Delaware. On the day of the event, the volunteers’ primary task was to transcribe letters that Schomburg sent to other notable figures such as French novelist René Maran, philosopher Alain Locke, and cartoonist Albert Smith. According to Helton, they concentrated on the years 1925–1931 since they showed how Schomburg and other individuals were “invested in the idea that saving, preserving and building the Black history was urgent work.”

A computerized compilation of all the Schomburg documents kept at the Center and at Fisk University in Nashville, where Schomburg served as a visiting curator in the 1930s, was the ultimate aim of the transcribe-a-thon. According to Helton, Schomburg’s collection will someday be digitized and made available online so that readers won’t have to go from library to library to read them. People clustered around tables, tapping away at laptops, while Schomburg Center employees helped individuals who needed assistance understanding a word or letter on a specific page. Volunteer Monica White stated that transcription of the articles became simpler with time as she began to notice patterns and context hints. “You’ll see the pattern in the handwriting then start to say, ‘OK, this is how he makes his T’s and I’s,’” she remarked. But why expect people to transcribe the texts when computers can accomplish nearly everything these days? Is a question that may lurk in many minds. Helton stated that despite their sophisticated

nature, document scanners are unable to interpret comments, scribbles, or cursive writing. “The computer can’t make out what the human eye can make out in these documents,” she explained. According to White, she volunteered to support historical preservation. “I feel like I’m part of that legacy so that people coming after will have the information that previous researchers have not had,” she noted. According to Valdés, she identifies as a Schomburg “stan.” “Diasporic Blackness: The Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg” is the title of the book she authored capturing his life, work, and philosophy. In light of recent school district bans on Black authors’ works and curtailments on teaching about the nation’s historical treatment of Black people, she described the transcribe-a-thon as a “political stance.” Valdés described the experience as “Fun” and “wonderful to be a part of this and it’s community building.” She also added, “But it is also very much to say we are here and you cannot ignore us.”

NYC – To Allow Home Grown Marijuana Soon

On January 17, 2024, the Cannabis Control Board of the state will deliberate over regulations permitting citizens to cultivate cannabis inside. The board will consider rules allowing residents of New York who are at least 21 years old to grow up to six mature plants (i.e., plants with buds) and six immature plants per home. After trimming those plants, home growers would be allowed to retain up to 5 pounds of flower—much more than the 3 ounces that would ordinarily be lawful to have. Though it’s against the law to sell cannabis in New York without a license, giving it as a gift is acceptable. A first peek at the draft regulations from the state’s Office of Cannabis Management indicates that residents of New York will be allowed to acquire seeds online or buy plants from authorized dispensaries. The state legislation enabling marijuana for adult use in 2021 contains a clause

allowing residents of New York to cultivate cannabis at home. However, it wasn’t supposed to go into force until OCM released more thorough regulations. In October 2022, the state passed laws that expedited the process of permitting people receiving medicinal cannabis to cultivate their own plants. State regulations include the potential for home-grow activities to exacerbate neighborly conflicts. Growers will also have to make an effort to lessen the weed’s odor if it starts to bother other neighbors, according to the regulations that the board will soon decide. However, the new regulations won’t provide everyone with equal access to home gardening. Since marijuana is still illegal at the federal level and those buildings are federally sponsored, it will still be unlawful for inhabitants of NYCHA to produce cannabis. When Mayor Eric Adams announced in 2022 that his administration

would investigate the possibility of constructing cannabis gardens on public housing roofs, he ran into that roadblock. Additionally, odor mitigation measures might be implemented by co-ops and private landlords, essentially restricting the amount of marijuana that people can cultivate at home. The state is attempting to develop its legal

economy and persuade New Yorkers to visit the few regulated dispensaries that have opened thus far rather than the countless unlicensed stores, which is why the regulations permitting home growing were implemented. Due to red tape and legal obstacles, licensed dispensaries have taken longer to launch than Gov. Kathy Hochul had originally anticipated. State-approved growers have faced difficulties as a result, finding it difficult to recover their expenses. However, the sector could soon gain traction. At the next meeting, state authorities are also anticipated to approve a fresh round of cannabis company licenses, which would be the first licenses granted outside of an initial social justice scheme. The proposed home-grow restrictions will be subject to public comment for 60 days following the Cannabis Control Board’s approval before being finalized.

Public Hearing

Proposed Toll Rate Schedule for the Central Business District Tolling Program (CBDTP) The Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA), doing business as MTA Bridges and Tunnels, will hold hybrid public hearings to solicit comments on the proposed toll rate schedule for the Central Business District Tolling Program (CDBTP). The hearings will be held in a hybrid format with options to participate in-person as well as virtually via Zoom’s online platform and conference call feature, with a livestream available on the MTA YouTube channel. Under the MTA Reform and Traffic Mobility Act of 2019 (the “Act”), TBTA will establish the CBDTP and collect tolls from vehicles entering the Manhattan Central Business District, an area defined by statute as south of and inclusive of 60th Street but excluding the FDR Drive, New York State Route 9A (including the Battery Park Underpass), and any surface roadway portion of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel connecting to West Street. The purpose of the Program is to reduce traffic congestion and generate revenue to fund $15 billion in improvements to subway, bus, and commuter rail systems under MTA’s 2020-2024 Capital Plan and successor plans. The Act established a Traffic Mobility Review Board and tasked it with issuing recommendations for a toll rate schedule within the parameters of the Act, including toll amounts and any credits, discounts, and/or exemptions. These recommendations were published on November 30, 2023. On December 6, 2023, the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority Board voted to proceed with the administrative procedure required to establish and adopt a toll rate schedule. Accordingly, a public comment period is underway and hybrid public hearings will be held in order for TBTA to receive feedback on the proposed toll rate schedule. The public comment period began December 27, 2023 and will continue through March 11, 2024. The proposed toll rate schedule can be viewed at: https://new.mta.info/document/129191. The proposal in summary includes the following: n Passenger vehicles and passenger-type vehicles with commercial license plates would be charged a $15 peak period E-ZPass toll for entering the CBD, no more than once per day. n Trucks would be charged a $24 or $36 peak period E-ZPass toll for entering the CBD, depending on their size. n Buses providing transit or commuter services would be exempted from the toll. Other buses would be charged a $24 or $36 peak period E-ZPass toll for entering the CBD, depending on their type. n Motorcycles would be charged half the respective passenger vehicle toll, no more than once per day. n Tolls would be charged to vehicles only as they enter the CBD – not if they remain in or leave the zone. n Peak period toll rates would apply during the most congested times of the day – from 5am to 9pm on weekdays, and from 9am to 9pm on weekends. Toll rates would be 75% lower in the overnight period. n A tunnel credit against a portion of the peak period CBD toll rate would be provided to vehicles with E-ZPass entering through the four tolled entries that lead directly into the CBD: the Queens-Midtown, Hugh L. Carey, Holland, and Lincoln Tunnels. No crossing credits would be in effect in the overnight period, when CBD toll rates are already 75% lower than in the peak period. n NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) taxis, green cabs, and for-hire vehicles (FHVs) would be exempted from the daily system toll on vehicles. Instead, a per-trip CBD toll would be added to each paid passenger trip fare for trips made to, from, or within the CBD at the toll rate of $1.25 per-trip for taxis, green cabs and FHVs, and $2.50 per-trip for FHVs on trips dispatched by a high-volume for-hire service (HVFHS). n Specialized government vehicles would be exempted from the CBD toll (in addition to qualifying authorized emergency vehicles and qualifying vehicles transporting persons with disabilities, as required by the Act). n Low-income vehicle owners who qualify and register with TBTA for the Low-Income Discount Plan would receive a peak period E-ZPass toll rate that is 50% less than the passenger vehicle peak period E-ZPass toll rate, on their eligible vehicle’s 11th trip and trips thereafter in a calendar month. n Generally, CBD toll rates for vehicles using fare media other than E-ZPass, commonly referred to as Tolls by Mail, would be 50% higher than that of E-ZPass customers. Complete details of the proposed toll rate schedule can be found at https://new.mta.info/document/129191.

Grenada, Celebrating 50 Years of Independence

As the country of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique celebrate its 50th year of independence, we offer our heartfelt congratulations. This beautiful country of some 133 square miles of sandy beaches, more rivers, exquisite waterfalls, and lovely mountains has excelled in so many ways and continues to have strong economic performance and growth. The theme for this 50th Anniversary celebration is so appropriate - one people, one journey, one future -- it talks to a resilient people, a journey that has not always been smooth-sailing but a people looking forward to a very bright future. In the words of the official song, “Grenada 50 - Up From Here”, Prime Minister

Dickon Mitchell has struck the right chord in looking at the past, working in the present and building a strong future as the country looks forward to its celebration of 50 years. Grenada gained its independence from Britain in 1974 under the leadership of Sir Eric Gary who became the first Prime Minister of the country; but the list of founders of the country includes such public figure as Albert Marryshow Albert Marryshow and Herbert Blaize. Grenada has been blessed with strong leadership through its years of independence from Britain. In celebrating this significant milestone of 50 years of independence, Grenadians are taking the time to reflect

on the journey as a nation and to look at its gain since its independence from British rule- and they have much to be proud of. One of the areas that they have notable achievement has been Grenada’s economic growth; the country has diversified significantly moving from the traditional reliance on agriculture, particularly nutmeg and coco production, and today Grenada boasts a thriving tourism industry and visitors are flocking to the beautiful shore’s peace and tranquility and it’s politics that avoids turmoil. The growth of tourism has not only boosted the economy but has created employment and business opportunities for many Grenadians. In celebrating the 50th anniversary we also look at the journey and the challenges one of which was of course in 1983 when U.S. Marines, on the order of U.S. President at the time Ronald Reagan, descended upon the shores of the country ostensibly to rescue the country from Cuba’s influence and to ensure Grenada as a democracy. it is ironic that the US went to Grenada to save democracy, but today we see thousands of people in the street, lawyers in the courts, legislation all over the country. In the United States in the era of Donald Trump and Trumpism in the Republican Party, the US democracy is now considered to be in trouble. So what the fight was for in Grenada as per Reagan,

it seems that that effort now needs to be in the United states for its own democracy. Through the independence period, Grenada has made significant strides in education and health care and the government is taking steps for even further improvement in these areas, so Grenada has much to be proud of. Today, Grenada presents an admirable and reliable face to the rest of the world in spite of its challenges it has shown resilience and certainly it has also demonstrated essentially a picture of adherence to fair and free elections and that the government is moving towards a steady economic growth with little social disruption, absence of any real violence and a picture of a country with determination and showing real resilience in the face of the many challenges. The track record is clear - Grenada has earned its keep nationally, regionally, and internationally- that explains why Grenadians have earned the respect of its neighbors and its partners in the Caribbean, Washington, Latin America, London, and Ottawa and elsewhere for its ability to look adversity in its face and overcome it. We wish the people of Grenada and the Government of Grenada A Happy 50th Anniversary of Independence, Continued Development and Prosperity for the Spice Island of the Caribbean.

Bob Marley - His Truth Lives On

As we look to celebrate the birthday of Mr. Robert Marley who was born February 6,1945, we can’t but subscribe to the relevancy of his music and his words decades after he has passed. Just recently CARIB NEWS ran an editorial on the current situation in the world- wars- and that editorial was essentially Bob Marley’s song on wars and the message was so relevant today as it was decades ago when Bob Marley first composed and recorded this song; so this explains why even the younger generation of today are so keen on Bob Marley and he has remained so popular among even the young ones and essentially it talks to the truth of Bob Marley. For him the truth is everlasting and his music reflects that throughout the decades. The popularity

of Bob Marley’s reggae around the world is because Bob has focused on what can bring us together, what might be our common suffering, but how solidarity can help to overcome even though suffering, and so it’s also a message of love and unity and those are everlasting truths. Even when he faced danger and even when forces tried to quiet him, Bob Marly stood firm in his message of overcoming adversity and injustice and looking for unity, love and peace. His unity concert in Jamaica bringing warring political forces together is symptomatic of Bob’s commitment to solidarity and unity and therein lies the power and the popularity of Bob Marley; that is why we must continue to honor his life and the world joins in this tribute

because the world knows the message and understands the meaning of this message, the message of Bob Marley, that even when people are suffering they can come together and even when people are at war they must come to see each other’s humanity and that will bring about an understanding and eliminate wars. The state of the world is now very much in need of Bob Marley’s message; his message and his rich insight into the world we live in and the experience that will bring us together and for that we not only celebrate Bob Marley but we listen to his truth and abide by it. May his memory continue to strengthen us

One People, One Journey, One Future resonant affirmation that Grenada’s power lies in its unity, as it continues to forge a unified destiny.

Celebrating its golden jubilee of independence, Grenada proudly rallies around the theme “One People, One Journey, One Future.” This phrase captures the essence of a nation that has grown stronger through a half-century of challenges and victories. “One People” emphasizes the unity in diversity that characterizes the island, amelting pot of cultures and tradi-

tions unified by common goals. “One Journey” pays homage to the shared experiences, both difficult and uplifting, that have molded the country’s collective identity. “One Future” underscores a forward-looking optimism, acknowledging that each individual has a role in sculpting a future that is both prosperous and equitable. This unifying theme serves as a

About Independence Logo The 50th Anniversary logo embodies our theme “One People, One Future, One Journey. It features a traditional Belair Dancer, an embodiment of our rich heritage and a tribute to the trailblazers who paved our path. Beside her, a young boy stands as a symbol of a promising future and the continuity of our legacy. Their hands, outstretched towards each other, symbolizing unity, emphasizing the strength in collaboration and shared responsibility. Above them, a dove soars, not only signifying a hopeful future but also

indicating progress and upward movement. At the base of these are outlines of our mountainous terrain and iconic Grand Etang Lake which symbolizes our cherished island and the collective journey of its inhabitants. Theme Song Grenada 50 – Up From Here” is a captivating theme song composed by talented writers Akino ‘Tallis’ Romain, Ryan ‘Riggy Atmosphere’ DeRiggs, and Ahkim ‘Sway Jean’ Baptiste. With production expertise from John James of Xpert Productions and Afibah ‘Phantom’ McQueen, this song embodies the spirit of Grenada’s progress and resilience, capturing the essence of our nation’s journey towards a brighter future.

Grenadian-American Feature - Dr. Joseph Radix

Joseph Radix was born in Grenada and went to primary and high school there. After those formal years, he migrated with his parents to the United States. As he prepared for college and with a desire to be an actor, Radix spoke to his father about that possibility but the elder Radix didn’t think that was a good idea. He went to Virginia State University and became a chemistry major. He began questioning if this was the right field for him. His father passed away while he was in college, but three years or so before he actually went into dental school, his father had suggested at one point that maybe dentistry was a good field that he could pursue. He also had the influence of family members as well. One of them was Dr. Lamuel Stanislaus who was a Grenadian

dentist and diplomat. After leaving Grenada in the mid 1940s he attended dental school at Howard University. After 1956, he lived in Brooklyn where he founded Caribbeans for Ed Koch. On January 18, 1985 he was appointed Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations in New York City where he was representative for five years. He served again for another stint from 1998 through 2004. He says, “At that point I actually applied to dental school as a junior and was accepted and never finished my Bachelor’s degree.” Dr. Radix shares the changes he sees in the field of dentistry over the years. “There are a lot of changes since my time of my graduation,” he says. He says right now it’s all about the implant craze which is different from when he graduated dental school it was not a focus at the time. The basis for modern dental implants is a biological process called osseointegration, in which materials such as titanium or zirconia form an intimate bond to the bone. He says, “I think 20 years from now we will probably be in a different phase of the profession again.”

Dr. Radix is married to Corporation Counsel Hon. Sylvia Hinds-Radix and they share three daughters, Jovia, Jenneate and Josyl. He is proud of his children for pursuing their own paths. Jovia followed in the footsteps of her mother, an attorney; Jeanneate followed in his footsteps of her father, becoming a dentist; and Josyl who completed culinary studies and business, currently works for the government in the department of Technology. Both Jovia and Jeannette recently got married. Outside of his family, Dr. Radix shares a special bond and commitment to the community. He serves as Chairman of Caribbean American Medical & Scientific Association (CAMSA), Inc., which was formed in New York in 2002 by a group of doctors of Caribbean descent who wanted to improve health care for the Caribbean community both locally and in the Caribbean, as well as to give back to the Caribbean countries from which they had derived so much. They offer seminars as well. He’s worked in several community health centers that serve the poorer neighbor

hoods in New York, for example, the Brownsville Multi-service Family Health and Wellness Centers (BMS) delivers quality services and comprehensive programs to over 17,000 residents in East and Central Brooklyn (New York). BMS provides a wide array of services that address and prevent health conditions. Services like Obstetrics/Gynecology, general medicine, pediatrics, and of course dental services. Dr. Radix also tutors at the Barbados Commission and mentors in his spare time. On celebrating Grenada’s 50th Independence, he recalled some of the things Grenada went through to make it to 50 - Maurice Bishop, a Grenadian revolutionary and the leader of New Jewel Movement that came to power during the 13 March 1979 revolution that removed Eric Gairy from office. Bishop was arrested on charges of plotting an armed anti-government conspiracy and taken to the Fort George prison on February 6 1974. Radix believes that ‘we have progressed a lot in 50 years”.

Jamaica – Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at Bob Marley Biopic Premier A royal surprise hit Jamaica as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle graced the red carpet at the premiere of Bob Marley: One Love, the biopic about the reggae icon that took place at the legend’s birthland. The island was rocked by their unexpected presence, which transformed the premiere into a celebration of Marley’s legacy and the royal couple’s ongoing appeal. Confessed Marley enthusiast Meghan looked stunning in a black maxi dress and bold earrings, while Harry looked casually cool in a navy blue suit that did its job without the help of a tie. As the couple embraced movie stars, Jamaican dignitaries including Prime Minister Andrew Holness, and even Bob Marley’s son Ziggy, they strolled hand in hand, exuding warmth, and genuine joy. Prince Henry and Meghan stayed for more than just the photo. Meghan and Harry showed their appreciation for Marley’s music and his message of peace and har-

mony during their talks with the cast and crew. As they stood for pictures with the beaming supporters, their expression of joy came naturally. Notably, Rita Marley, the widow of Bob and Meghan, had a tearful conversation over how their love story was represented in the film. The Bob Marley: One Love film, “celebrates the life and music of an icon who inspired generations through his message of love and unity,” according to a synopsis. “On the big screen for the first time, discover Bob’s powerful story of overcoming adversity and the journey behind his revolutionary music.” The couple’s presence has diplomatic significance. This year, Jamaica is anticipated to have a referendum on the controversial subject of replacing the Queen as head of state, which has generated discussion throughout the nation. On February 14, “Bob Marley: One Love” will appear in theatres.

“Bob Marley: One Love” in Theaters on February 14 On February 6, 1945, Nesta Robert “Bob” Marley was born in Nine Mile, Jamaica. Bob Marley emerged as the single most influential reggae musician of all time. Decades after his death, he remains a powerful symbol of pride, independence, and peace for people of African descent. He is closely associated with Jamaican national identity and Rastafarian spirituality. Marley’s hit songs made reggae popular around the world. This year he would have been 79 years old. To commemorate his legacy, Paramount

Pictures is releasing in theaters his biopic on February 14 - Bob Marley: One Love. It is a musical drama film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Green, Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, and Zach Baylin, from a story by Winter and Flowers. It is based on the life of reggae singer and songwriter Bob Marley, from his rise to fame up until his death in 1981. The film stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley, alongside Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley, and James Norton as Chris Blackwell.

Miss Pat Chin Remembers Bob Marley I was operating Randy’s Record Mart at 17 N Parade in Kingston, Jamaica with my husband Vincent when Bob would come by the store. He would pass through our store on many occasions looking for his friend Skillcole to go play ball, and during that time in the early 60s and 70s, he recorded at Studio 17, which was upstairs Randy’s Record Mart.

Lee “Scratch” Perry OD, was a Jamaican record producer, composer, and singer noted for his innovative studio techniques and production style. Perry was the first producer to record Bob. Bob recorded many songs and some of his LPs are well-known today. Together at 17 N Parade, you can find many artists like Gregory Isaacs,

Dennis Brown, Jacob Miller, also many collectors, producers and buyers. They also have Peter Tosh, and Alton Ellis. Bob did not hang around too much, though. I am so grateful to be a part of this reggae revo-lution and to have known Bob personally and he inspired the world with his songs and lyrics, and I am thankful to know

who has taken his works through the world. I know his music will live on forever. I know his legacy will carry on. His song “One Love” has been played and listened to numerous times. Thank you to his family for keeping his legacy alive and giving us music for life.

WHO Awards Countries for Progress in Eliminating Industrially Produced Trans Fats for First Time “Trans fat elimination is economically, politically, and technically feasible and saves lives at virtually no cost to governments or consumers. This harmful compound is unnecessary, and no one misses it when it’s gone,” said Dr Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives. “We are winning the battle against trans fat, but countries without regulations are at risk of becoming dumping grounds for TFA products. Governments and the food industry have a responsibility to ensure that doesn’t happen.” WHO also encourages food manufacturers —the producers of raw materials and final food products—to eliminate iTFA from their products. The food industry has made good progress so far, as presented in a November 2023 WHO report. Despite recent successes in eliminating iTFA from food globally, over half of the world’s population remain unprotected from its harmful impacts, thus putting them at a potential risk of increasing heart disease. WHO has awarded its first-ever certificates validating progress in eliminating industrially produced trans fatty-acids to five countries. Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand have each demonstrated they have a best practice policy for industrially produced trans-fatty acids (iTFA) elimination in effect, supported by adequate monitoring and enforcement systems. WHO also released results from the first five years of its REPLACE initiative to eliminate iTFA. While the ambitious target set by WHO in 2018—to fully eliminate iTFA from the global food supply by the end of 2023— was not met, there has been remarkable progress made towards this goal in every region of the world. In 2023 alone, new best-practice policies became effective in 7 countries (Egypt, Mexico, Moldova, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Philippines, and Ukraine). Trans-fatty acids (TFA) are semisolid to solid fats that occur in two forms: industrially produced and naturally occurring. Intake of TFA is associated with increased risk of heart attacks and death from heart disease. TFA have no known health benefits, and foods high in iTFA (e.g. fried foods, cakes and ready meals) are often high in sugar, fat and salt. A total of 53 countries have now best practice policies in effect for tackling iTFA in food, vastly improving the food environment for 3.7 billion people, or 46% of the world’s population, as compared to 6% just 5 years ago. These policies are expected to save approximately 183 000 lives a year. “Trans fat has no known health benefit,

but huge health risks,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO DirectorGeneral. “We are very pleased that so many countries have introduced policies banning or limiting trans fat in food. But introducing a policy is one thing; implementing it is another. I congratulate Denmark, Lithuania, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Thailand, who are leading the world in monitoring and enforcing their trans fat policies. We urge other countries to follow their lead.” Accelerating efforts to achieving bestpractice policies in just 8 countries with the highest needs would eliminate 90% of the global iTFA burden, representing a unique opportunity to see in our lifetime a world free from deaths attributable to iTFA. The WHO validation programme for iTFA elimination recognizes those countries which went beyond introducing best practice policies by ensuring rigorous monitoring and enforcement systems in place. Monitoring and enforcing compliance with policies is critical to maximizing and sustaining the health benefits of iTFA elimination. Best practices in iTFA elimination policies follow WHO criteria and limit iTFA use in all settings. There are two best-practice policy options: 1) mandatory national limit of 2 grams of iTFA per 100 grams of total fat in all foods; and 2) mandatory national ban on the production or use of partially hydrogenated oils (a major source of trans fat) as an ingredient in all foods. For some countries, an optimal program would implement both policies, due to the sources of trans fat.

While countries should continue to strive for total elimination of iTFA, based on what has been achieved in the 5 years since the global call for elimination, WHO proposes a revised new target for virtual elimination of iTFA globally by 2025. The target includes best-practice elimination policies are passed in countries that account for at least 90% of the total global iTFA burden. best practice policies are passed in countries that account for at least 70% of the total burden within regions. Eliminating iTFA is a powerful way to prevent heart disease and the high costs to individuals and economies in medical treatment and lost productivity. WHO remains committed to supporting countries in their efforts and celebrating their achievements. The next application cycle for the iTFA elimination validation programme will open in March 2024 and applications will be received on a continued basis.

Bahamas – US Issues Travel Warning Due to High Murder Rate There has been a recent spike in crime after a report of nearly 20 deaths in only one month. The US embassy in the Bahamas has cautioned Americans traveling there to exercise caution. The US embassy in Nassau has issued a security alert and advisory, alerting visitors to the escalating rates of gang-related violence and killings. Since the start of 2024, violent crime has increased significantly in both tourist and non-tourist regions. This includes burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults. Officials say that gang violence in retaliation has been the main cause of the 18 recorded deaths in the nation in January alone. It has been suggested to Americans that when vacationing at short-term rental residences,

they should be extremely cautious and watchful. In a statement, the embassy stated, ‘Murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets.’ Additionally, officials have requested that visitors not open the front door at any hotel or apartment for strangers and refrain from forcefully opposing any robbery attempt. The Bahamas have been added to the State Department’s “Exercise Increased Caution” warning list, and visitors are even being encouraged to refrain from participating in water sports and excursions. “Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. “

It added, ‘Watercraft may be poorly maintained, and some operators may not have safety certifications. Always review and heed local weather and marine alerts before engaging in water-based activities.” “Never swim alone, regardless of your age or level of swimming skills. Keep within your fitness and swimming capabilities.” The release warned, “Be mindful of sharks when swimming and engaging in water activities, as there have been recent fatal and non-fatal incidents involving sharks.” Philip Brave Davis, the prime minister, offered remarks on the advice, “We will not violate anyone’s civil liberties, but you are likely to be impacted by more roadblocks and unannounced police action.

He continued, “This may make you late for your appointments, or delay plans you have, but this is a small price to pay for the collective benefit of having our streets made safer, and our lives less blighted by murder and other violent crimes.” Davis has reportedly presented the public with a crime strategy in reaction to this month’s alarmingly high murder rate, according to local press.

Guyana – Diaspora Unit to Work With Tourism Bodies

To promote Guyana’s growth, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s Diaspora Unit keeps working with interested parties. To examine strategies to promote tourism among the Guyanese diaspora, the Diaspora Unit met with the director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) and officials of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of

Guyana (THAG) on January 23, 2024. There were several THAG executives present, including Mr. Salvador DeCaries (Baganara), Carla Vantull (Wilderness Explorers), Abigial Ally (Bimichi Eco Lodge), and Oslyn Kirton. Rosalinda Rasul, Head of the Diaspora Unit, President of THAG, and Mrs. Omadele George, Director of GTA, were also present (Executive Director of THAG). The conversation centered on the various ways in which the Diaspora Unit and the tourism organizations can work together to improve the understanding of tourism among Guyana’s overseas missions, advertise Guyana as a travel destination to both the Diaspora and non-Diaspora, and exchange details about the nation’s distinctive tourism offerings. Executives at THAG claim: “They recognized the pivotal role Guyana’s diplomatic missions play in representing Guyana on the global stage; therefore, it imperative that their staff possesses a comprehensive understanding of Guyana’s tourism product.” The purpose of this conference was to create a

Jamaica – US Travel Advisory Over Crime and Medical Concerns Due to health risks and criminal activity, the US government, acting via the State Department, has advised its nationals to exercise caution when visiting Jamaica. US citizens are advised to reevaluate their plans to visit Jamaica, according to a notice on the State Department website. The advisory warned, “Reconsider travel to Jamaica due to crime and violence.” Regarding medical services, the State Department released the following advice: “Emergency services and hospital care vary throughout the island, and response times and quality of care may vary from US standards. Public hospitals are under-resourced and cannot always provide high-level or specialized care. Private hospitals require payment upfront before admitting patients and may not have the ability to provide specialized care.” It further added, “Ambulance services are not always readily available, especially in rural

areas, and are not always staffed by trained personnel.” The warning then emphasized, “We strongly encourage you to obtain traveler’s insurance, including medical evacuation insurance, before traveling to Jamaica. The Department of State does not pay medical bills.” Regarding criminal activity, the advice said that “local police often do not respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. When arrests are made, cases are infrequently prosecuted to a conclusive sentence. Families of US citizens killed in accidents or homicides frequently wait a year or more for final death certificates to be issued by Jamaican authorities. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica has for several years been among the highest in the Western Hemisphere.” The advisory then included a list of Jamaican areas that its people should avoid visiting.

cooperative framework that will enable diplomatic missions to successfully market Guyana as a desirable travel destination. By utilizing the knowledge and clout of diplomatic missions to highlight the nation’s varied and alluring tourist options, the result of this partnership has the potential to dramatically increase the marketing of Guyana’s tourism sector abroad. Rosalinda Rasul, Head of the Diaspora, briefed

the executives on the many ways the Unit has been promoting travel to the diaspora and informed them of planned initiatives to be carried out in 2024 to advance travel. She promised to provide the tourist organizations with all the information required to support their efforts, help them reach their goals, and involve them even more in those initiatives. The stakeholders lay out a few things that they can start working on right away.

Sean Paul – Dancehall Artists Should Tour Together in Unity Renowned international dancehall sensation Sean Paul gave Plantation Cove in St. Ann a preview of his act on the road with his premiere appearance in ‘Rebel Salute’s 30 for 30’, minutes before leaving for his Australia/New Zealand tour. The “Gimme the Light ” singer once again voiced his disapproval of artist conflicts and his wish for unity in Dancehall during a backstage interview with a local entertainment publication. He remarked, “It’s a big part of our culture for clash, sound especially, but when it comes to artists clashing, I have seen violence from it because people argue and I have seen it personally, so it’s no longer

necessary for us to put so much energy into something that has us going in circles, instead, unify and push to the world.” Paul, a father of two young children, recently criticized the lyrical dispute between Stefflon Don and Jada Kingdom and urged the women to lead by example. Paul expressed his strong opinion that Dancehall musicians should create music that would sustain their touring careers rather than music that glorifies division within the genre. “We’ve been there, not just myself and Shaggy but there are so many artists that have songs that broke internationally, and if all of us can tour, which we all talk about

a lot; like back in the day, Junior Gong used to talk it, and he was one of the firsts to put it together the way he did with the cruise, so I would love to see all of that, all of us touring, not just one or two places, but places that don’t know us that much, and they have heard one or two songs and they get to see us and say oh that’s the guy, so I think we need that in the genre.” The idea that Paul has softened is nevertheless unmoving, according to Paul. “Some people believe that there is a certain weakness in saying it and that I don’t want to be tough anymore, but I disagree, me saying this to the culture is for us to get to a better place, because hit songs have

us touring and sustaining way more than clash songs, clash songs are for a shorter time,” he noted. “There have been some that are legendary and will always be a part of our culture, but then we are over saturating it, and when you over saturate something, it gets stagnant.” Sean Paul has been a model leader. On the international arena since 2017, he has shared stages with Chi Ching Ching, whom he also invited to perform during his Rebel Salute concert. Later, Ding Dong made a brief cameo.
