Assistive technology and community alarms Assistive technology services help vulnerable people, particularly older people, to live in their own homes with greater safety and independence. They use a range of technologies that raise an alarm to get help for someone 24 hours a day and so provide help, security and peace of mind. Special equipment can be linked to your telephone system so you can get help quickly if you need it, even if you are unable to speak. For some of the equipment you do not even have to press a button to call for help as sensors will automatically detect things such as floods, carbon monoxide escapes or if you fall. There are different types of assistive technology depending on your needs, from simple battery operated items for use within the home to more complex telecare equipment that links through your telephone to a community alarm service centre. The equipment can help with things like memory issues, mobility or risk of falling, safety in the home as well as supporting carers. Services can be provided for free if you have been assessed as eligible for help although there is a small charge for the community alarm monitoring service if this is used. Alternatively you can purchase the equipment directly. There is a demonstration centre available to view the equipment and speak to a specialist for advice. The assessment is carried out by a company called n-able using skilled and experienced practitioners who are also able to advise you and provide the equipment. For more information on eligibility or to request an assessment contact the Customer Service Centre on 0344 800 8020. For information on the equipment available contact n-able directly on 01603 894120. Community Alarms Access to community alarms is dependent on which District Council you live in and is a service for which there is a weekly (rental) charge. monitoring. Telehealth enables regular assessment of your condition without the need for you to visit the GP surgery, or clinic. A small touch-screen device is installed in your home so your GP, community or specialist nurse, can check readings of your blood pressure, pulse, weight, temperature, the amount of oxygen in your blood and even your blood sugar levels. These results are transmitted to a secure computer where they can be accessed at the clinic or surgery. Using the information collected through the telehealth monitor, it is possible to detect changes in your condition. These help your healthcare professional respond earlier and make changes to your treatment or medication which may reduce or prevent symptoms from getting worse or lead to a hospital admission. By using telehealth, you and your carer can become more actively involved in your care, and you should experience some improvements in your quality of life and overall symptom management. It could also reduce the number of visits you have to make to the GP surgery or outpatient clinic, and help you to maintain your independence. For more information talk to your GP or community/ specialist nurse.
