INTRODUCING MFON MEGASTARS

My Family, Our Needs (MFON) has launched a new awards ceremony, putting young disabled people at the heart of the celebrations. The setbacks, hardships and challenges that families with disabled children can face are often down to barriers and insufficient support systems. However, there are extraordinary things happening on a daily basis in communities up and down the country and MFON Megastars wants to celebrate them.

THE SEND SPOTLIGHT

There aren’t many awards ceremonies which focus entirely on young people. Through the work My Family, Our Needs does with parents and professionals to support young disabled people, it is clear that when facing adversity, young people are often brave, sometimes fearless and always the drivers for change. Their spirit is at the heart of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) community and they are its most important members; full of ideas and the determination to make the world an entirely different place. They have a voice which isn’t heard enough and the purpose of MFON Megastars is to give them that voice and make them feel as special as they are.

The awards are inclusive and inspired by passion, so, as there is often a person or group who has helped a young disabled person achieve what matters to them, there is also an award for them. The Marvellous Mentor award can be for a teacher, a sports coach, an employer or anyone who has championed the person they believe in.

CATEGORIES

There are six categories in total: • Overcoming Adversity – conquering challenges and overcoming obstacles, nominees in the category will have shown bravery and strength to get to where they are today. • Creative Arts – Whether art has been used as therapy or a form of expression, the talented nominees in this category could be artists, dancers, musicians or singers who excel in their creative craft. • Making a Difference – Nominees in this category will have made a difference to the lives of people with additional needs whilst also living with their own disability. • Super Sibling – Nominees will have supported their brother or sister through tough times and difficult hardships. They may not necessarily have a disability themselves, but they go above and beyond for their sibling who does. • Marvellous Mentor – A constant source of support and strength for a young disabled person, the nominees in this category will be the people shouting loudest about a young person’s success. • Fundraiser of the Year – Nominees in this category may have raised money for one individual or a large organisation but they will have been passionate, driven and tireless in their campaigning.
