amer Elbabaa, M.D., William Ferguson, M.D., and Justin Josephson, M.D., were honored with the 2013 St. Luke’s Faithful Healer Awards presented to the staff of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Elbabaa is director of the division of pediatric neurosurgery. Ferguson is medical director of the Bob Costas Cancer Center and division director of hematology/oncology. Josephson is a fellow in neonatology and the Dana Brown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “God uses Dr. Elbabaa’s hands to heal. I know this because I’ve seen and experienced it firsthand,” wrote Alisa D. Nickelson, RN, BSN, who nominated him for the honor. She is a former SSM Cardinal Glennon nurse and mother of a son, Brooke, who became a patient of Elbabaa in 2011. “His patients and families, Cardinal Glennon and the communities served are all so very fortunate he has chosen this special place to call ‘home.’” “Over the last couple of years Lauren and Dr. Ferguson have developed a great relationship,” wrote Angela Lee, mother of a patient diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2010. “Lauren has been through a lot and, of course, is very scared and emotional at her three-month checkups, but Dr. Ferguson always puts her at ease and has her laughing through the whole appointment.” “Dr. Josephson provides exceptional care to his patients and their families every day. He is a great resource to residents,” wrote Jennifer Craig, NNP-BC, neonatal nurse practitioner at

SSM Cardinal Glennon. “He is amazing with families – very patient and good at communicating in a positive way at very difficult times.” The awards were presented in October at a chapel service celebrating the Feast of St. Luke. St. Luke was the first Christian physician who became an evangelist and accompanied St. Paul on mission journeys. Luke was venerated by the Catholic Church as the patron saint of physicians and surgeons.

his year, the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is undergoing a full renovation to update technology and create a more welcoming environment for families. When complete this summer, the 21-bed unit will be larger, have a more open layout, and include 18 private rooms. “Our big, bright new PICU will provide patients and families with needed space and outside light, along with privacy, whether the child is in the unit for one day or three months,” says Lia Lowrie, M.D., Director of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care. “The latest technologies also will give private pediatricians the ability to access medical information about their patients from remote access points, keeping the patient’s circle of health care providers involved in their care in real time, a capability that’s been proven to improve outcomes.” Some of the rooms will also be designed to accommodate siblings, if needed, which is another family benefit. Other new technology will reduce the level of alarm noises that disturb young patients, while also enabling families to rapidly contact nurses and doctors at the touch of a button. HOUSEKEEPING 2616
