Since 2001 Speed Ventures has been around with only one mission – to give everybody the opportunity to feel the thrill of racing their own vehicle on a real racetrack. With events nearly every weekend in Nevada and California, they are helping shape the image of organized track events to be more budget friendly. Speed Ventures hosts events at most major raceways on the west coast, most recently at Spring Mountain Motorsports ranch in Pahrump. They also host track days at largely famous tracks, including Willow Springs and even the world famous Laguna Seca. In addition to regular track days, Speed Ventures hosts special themed competitions, like the “Megan Racing S2K Challenge” and the newly added “86 Challenge”. To keep the playing field fair, they tier competitors’ cars into five different classes, based on vehicle modifications. This way, even a car fresh from the dealer can still be in a competitive class without worrying 8 • carbonlv.com | November 2013 | be:CALM

Speed Ventures does more than just track days on big name courses, they also organize time trials, time attacks, performance driving schools, car control clinics, wheel-to-wheel races, private events, corporate events, autocross and more.

The team of Tnes Madolora, Antony Nicholson, and Maki Mikami made the leap into Las Vegas culinary greatness with Kaba Curry.

Curry isn’t the only specialty of Kaba Curry. Their one-ofa-kind desserts include chantilly Kaba Cakes, Haupia chocolate mousse pie, and Midori Mashup among others.

Kaba Curry Japanese Curry House & More

Las Vegas locals know that when winter comes, it slaps you in the face and freezes you to your bones. Our community of car enthusiasts know first hand that gathering for meets becomes sparse. We can begrudgingly stand outside and freeze and lie about how cold we are, or just simply go home. However, now imagine a place that welcomes you for the community you represent. A place whose warm delicious Japanese curry hits you right in the soul. Welcome to Kaba Curry. Kaba Curry is the Las Vegas pioneer of the Japanese curry movement. They boast a delicious menu combining both Japanese curry and Hawaiian food. The menu starts off with a base, either curry and rice, curry and cheese fries, curry udon, even curry loco moco! You then choose your delicious sides, toppings, and spice level with which to create your masterpiece. Chicken katsu, chicken karaage, corned beef hash patty, Japanese sausage, fried tofu, egg, corn, mushrooms, fukujinzuke are just a glimpse of Kaba Curry’s menu. I could go on and on

and on about the food they have to offer, but it’s the people behind the scenes of Kaba Curry that will keep you coming back.

From the moment you walk in the doors of their restaurant located on the second floor of the Pacific Asian Plaza, you’re greeted by their wonderful people. More often than not you’ll find the owners making the food you put in your belly. They don’t forget a face either. I myself have been coming to Kaba Curry for so long, that they know my exact order: Curry Udon spice level number 3, with chicken karaage, fried tofu, mushrooms and cheese. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. The story that we tell about Kaba Curry is humble beginnings between a group of friends who knew the way to someone's heart, was through their stomach. Providing delicious food and good vibes, Kaba Curry is a home away from home, a place to chill with your friends, and even make new friends while you’re there.

Meet Joe Warner, a Navy Veteran from Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was in Colorado where his love of performance cars began. “Whether is was sunny or snowing or just freezing cold outside, we used to roll down the street with jackets on and the heater blasting with the windows down.” It all started with his first car, a supercharged Cobalt SS. From then he upgraded to a turbo’d Cobalt SS and he thought he was happy. It wasn’t until he followed his brother Chris Warner out to Las Vegas when he began to change his mind. Chris owns an Evo X, and Joe wouldn't

stand around and let his little brother one-up him. “I was always an STI fan, but once I got in the Evo I knew I had to get one. I preferred the way it drove, and I knew the 4G63 platform in the Evo IX was going to be a good starting out point for me.” The opportune moment came when a local was looking to sell his Rally Red Evo IX. This wasn’t just any regular Evo; the previous owner kept it garaged most of the time, had low miles, and the paint was pristine and his peers certainly appreciated. When Joe isn’t busy saving>>>

eautiful, affordable and fun to drive. Those are words that would attract any person to the 2013 Subaru BRZ. “The BRZ can accommodate 2 car seats for my kids, that was the deciding factor.” This family man tell us about his 2013 Supercharged Subaru BRZ-- how it affects his life and family’s life.

“Family means a lot to me.” We knew that Brad’s kids were a huge factor when it came to purchasing the new RWD from Subaru. It came down to whether the car could haul his family around. “I take my daughter to pre-

school in the BRZ. We have the option to take our SUV, but she always seems to have the most fun in the sports car. She loves how loud it is.” Brad also informs us that his kids have become car enthusiasts as well! His toddlers can tell you when they see a BRZ. “They’ll sayDaddy! Daddy! That’s your car.” All we know, is that this dad is teaching his kiddos right! But where would Brad be without his adoring wife? “She is my sponsor! She knows that it was this car that got me into the car scene; it opened the door. It introduced me to car shows and track days.”>>>

Brad is part of Vegas 86 car club, “The car attracts such a huge variety of people, and what brings us together are our cars. We have bbqs that encourage families to come out as well.” He saw that different members involved themselves in everything from car shows, to autocross, and everything in between. Brad’s very first track day was only recently where he attended Speed Ventures at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. “It was a blast. Such a learning experience. I got to see what the car

could do on the track. It was one way to compare a naturally aspirated BRZ, versus a supercharged BRZ.” The Innovate Twin Screw Supercharger is Brad’s most recent edition to his car. Tuned by William Knose at Delicious Tuning, Brad has high hopes for his BRZ when he take takes it back to the track. He has made the car all this own with the unique vinyl on the car (that he designed himself), CS style lips kit on top of other mods. We can’t wait to see

what else Brad Fore will be doing with his supercharged BRZ, but we know that whatever it is, his family will be there by his side. Mods: Innovate Twin Screw Supercharger tuned by William Knose @Delicious Tuning, Rev Works UEL header, SRT header back exhaust, Rota Torque 18x9.5 wheels with Nitto NT555 tires, CS style lip kit, custom vinyl stripe

c e can all agree that’s it’s the journey that is the most important part of getting to your destination. The highs and lows, good and bad, the blood, sweat and tears all make for one hell of a story to share at the end of the day. Meet Lauder Corea’s 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Our readers are invited to take a back seat (while it still has back seats) and join in on this road trip. Just like a season premier of your new weekly watched TV show that leaves you wanting for more just as soon as the credits start to roll, we intend to bring

to you a project that will have you guessing “What is Lauder going to do next?” We’d love to formally introduce you to Carbon Automotive Lifestyle Magazine’s daily driven project. We will follow this car throughout the course of it’s modifications and how you can make similar changes to your car. There's a great deal of excitement from all of us to see where this car will go. Lauder is very excited to share the story of his Evo, better known as his "baby". His story will hopefully inspire more people out there to share a bit about the love for their cars.

28 • carbonlv.com | November 2013 | be:CALM

A show-quality car is the ultimate goal for Lauder’s Evo X. His platform includes light modifications already. The plan is to make upgrades in phases to include intake, exhaust, intercooler, piping, suspension, wheels, seats, and harnesses, to name a few. Here's a list of the current modifications: • Apexi short ram intake • Eibach lowering springs • 25mm wheel spacers • Mishimoto weighted shift knob • Tinted windows and tail lights

A show-quality car is the ultimate goal for Lauder’s Evo X

Lauder is very happy to announce his first sponsorship with Stance™ Performance Suspension Systems. In Carbon’s next issue we will share a step by step guide on installation.

From Lauder: Specials thanks to my girlfriend for being supportive of my obsession, my great friends from Carbon Magazine as well as all my other friends who have volunteered to help out in the build, and also thanks to Stance™ for being my first official sponsor!

Tell us a little about yourself: My name is Chelsey Kade and I’m 21 years old. I work for Vitality on the Strip that does the oxygen bars and aqua massages.

What do you like to do on your time off? Most of my free time involves just hanging around my friends and family. When I was younger, I was really involved in basketball. Now my time is spend with work, school, and spending time with my boyfriend.

What’s your favorite Vegas hang out? Just my house. Is that super lame? (laugher) It’s really cozy, I just like having my friends over, having hookah, watching movies, having a glass of wine, just chilling.

How did you get into the car scene? I have always loved cars, it’s kind of in my family. Muscle cars more than anything else. I’ve always just thought the import scene was super cool, but I didn’t know much about it. It was my boyfriend Arthur who introduced me to the scene; he taught me everything. I had my Scion 30 • carbonlv.com | November 2013 | be:CALM

TC when we first met. I told him I wanted to make it super cool. I had just started my new job, was living at home at the time, and I had a lot of extra cash. We just went all for it.

What drew you to your car? I thought it was cute, sporty, sleek and wasn’t too expensive (that kind of worked too, still being in highschool), I got my car (TC) right at the beginning of college.

Do you attend any car shows? Meets? Events? As far as local meets I go to Westside Wednesdays. I’ve also attended Slammed Society Showcase and IFO (Import Face Off). The first year I went (to IFO) I got a second place trophy for best Scion. That was really really neat. I love going to shows, seeing other people’s cars, meeting people, and it’s been awesome so far.

Affilitated with any clubs? Groups? No, it’s really not my thing. I really respect everyone and I support what people do, I just don’t think it’s really for me.

I love going to shows, seeing other people’s cars, meeting people, and it’s been awesome

I support my boyfriend when he goes to his VegasEvos meets (he has an Evo X), but other than that I tend to stay away from affiliations.

Any future plans for your car? Yeah, definitely! Im dying to do a flat rose-red color wrap at 5150 Wraps. I want to do that next year once I’ve saved from extra cash. That means changing the color of my wheels, either re-powdercoating my current wheels, or chang-

ing them entirely to Rotiform Wheels.. we’ll see I guess.

Who would you like to Thank? Arthur for helping me with everything. He taught me everything I know about my car, this is a project car for the both of us. My friends for having to drive me to certain places; my car is so low, I can’t drive it everywhere!

Like Father like Daughter: Both Lani and her dad Rolando’s, first car was a Chevrolet Camaro; Coincidence? We think not! We’ll let you in on a little secret.

Meet 24 year old Lani Albano. She works as a graphic designer at Bally Technologies. With her free time, she loves to sleep (who doesn’t?) and enjoys spending time with her sister and niece. Her boyfriend Lauder is “obsessed with his car” as she puts it, and lately has been joining him at local VegasEvos meets. “It’s my new thing, going to these meets now. I get to go to my favorite Vegas hangout which is Kaba Curry. They have the most delicious Japanese curry.”

What we’ve gathered about Lani up until this point is she is corporate by day, awesome girlfriend by night, loves her sleep and Japanese curry, but we still don’t know much about her love of cars. “I grew up with a lot of guy cousins that were all into cars, one of my cousins was even a pro drag racer. 32 • carbonlv.com | November 2013 | be:CALM

My dad worked at Garrett on the line for making turbos, so I’ve always kind of been around cars.” How many people can say that their dad worked for one of the most (if not THE most) well recognized manufacturers of turbos in existence? That’s awesome. Now when it came to Lani’s dream car she said at one point she wanted an Audi. Decisions decisions.

Lani is cornered. Her choice is simple: side with the tuner enthusiasts, or german engineering. But what’s this.. A wild Camaro appears! How is it that she chooses an almost non existent option in a Chevy Camaro SS? You can thank good ol’ pops for that. When the day came around for Lani to purchase her first car, there were no options. “No Audi for Lani. A V8 is better. She needed a sports car, more power, more styling”, says Rolando. Since she was young, Lani knew that dad’s 1978 Chevy Camaro meant the world to him. It was Rolando’s first car too. “I like sports cars. My car is 5.0

Lani Albano

“It was my papa’s car that drew me to my dream car. My dream car is even black and yellow, just like his.”

American muscle. No A/C. This car is my first wife”. We gawked about his history with Garrett Turbos too, “Yes, I worked for Honeywell for over 21 years”, and he laughs it off like it was nothing! Lani knew she made the right choice; following in her father’s footsteps. “It was my papa’s car that drew me to my dream car. My dream car is even black and yellow, just like his.” Like father like daughter.

Time has flown by with her Camarotook it straight from the lot two years ago and has had it ever since. We asked if Lani had any future plans for her car. Her boyfriend certainly has an idea, “..exhaust, intake, supercharger. That’s coming as soon as her warranty is up”, says Lauder. “Not right now. I paid extra for the warranty, I’m not trying to void that!” Smart girl.

INTERVIEW JASMINE TAMIMI|PHOTOS LAUDER COREA | CAR REGGIE CUNANAN EVO X

Interesting hobbies: I’ve been playing both electric and acoustic guitar for about 5 years now. I like to draw too, mostly doodles. Biggest pet peeve: When I’m walking in a mall and people take just cruise along slowly in front of you. Or when someone is taking their sweet time to cross the street and they just stare at you like “I’m the pedestrian, I have whatever right I want”.

What do you do for work: I’ve always been in retail sales. I just started working at a Sports Authority.

Worst job: My first high school job was telemarketing. I did that for a year and a half and it was just the most awful thing (laughter). What cars have you owned? In Montana I had an ‘89 Prelude. It was red, had a B20A5 in it, non VTEC stroker. I loved it, that little speed demon! One thing you want to accomplish: I’d love to get my name out there, not super famous or anything I don’t want anyone to scream my name or anything like that, but the recognition would be great! Hopefully have a nice house, a car and just enjoy life.

Dream car: It’s going back and forth, I really want an s2000. In my affordable price range at the moment though, I want an EK hatch. Favorite food? Mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Thomas Clark

Thomas Clark has been building cars for over 20 years now. Other than an exotic, Thomas has pretty much owned every other type of car you can imagine. Not to mention his love of bikes which includes his current 2012 GSXR 750. So what, do you ask, is the reason that Thomas decided to go with the new Scion FRS? He tells us about his love affair with his car and how he’s been in love ever since. “When I first saw the debut of the new FT-86, I knew I had to have it.” Thomas’ FRS has seen every type of road there is. Canyon runs in SoCal, mountain passes through Big Bear, traveling across hundreds of miles to his home state of Texas, and everything in between, his 86 has never failed him. “I enjoy the car the way it is. able to slide it around corners, run it at the track, and it still gets great gas mileage! For me it’s not about the power, it’s about the feel and responsiveness. To feel every part of that curve of the road, not any car can give you that feeling; my 86 does.” With his skills and knowledge in the automotive world, many pushed Thomas to open his own business; he specializes in retrofitting of headlights with his company Illuminating Lightworx. His skills don’t stop there however, and he has proven his work with the locals. He moved to Las Vegas after meeting some convincing characters at local Vegas86 gatherings. He has future endeavors for his beloved 86, maybe even forced induction, but for now he’ll stay true to it’s reliability that has yet to fail him.
