Dear Carbondale Citizens,

Director’s Message

We have had some exciting things happen in the Parks & Recreation Department since last summer. First, we hired Will Tempest as our Youth & Adult Athletics Coordinator. Will is a local “recreation professional” who has been instructing many of our summer programs over the last seven years. Will is transitioning into the full-time role and bringing his youthful enthusiasm to our progamming. Look for new summer camps such as Hockey, Tennis, and Pickleball that will be under his tutaleage. Second, we are in the process of awakening community support for a new pool. With the help of Carbondale citizens, the Parks & Recreation Commission is embarking on a path to collectively vision the exciting prospect of a future municipal pool. This effort is the first step in applying for a planning grant to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study. Thanks to everyone who completed our Pool Survey and to those that provided additional thoughts and feedback during our Community Pool Forum. You have provided us with valuable feedback and the necessary community outreach to be able to produce a competitive grant. The formation of a Friends of Carbondale Parks & Recreation advocacy group is now active and will help guide this process and support the findings of a feasibility study. The Carbondale Parks & Recreation Commission is still looking for interested community members to be a part of this group. Please contact me if interested in serving. Most importantly, you can let us know of your desire for a new pool by going swimmming and being an active user of your existing community pool. Go take a swim, whether it is for fitness, to gain a life skill by learning how to stay afloat, or just to cool off and have some fun. Cannonball! Marco.......(you said it didn’t you!) Third, due to the amazing efforts of the Aspen Valley Land Trust’s Save Red Hill fundraising campaign, the 25 acres of private property at the western base of the BLM Red Hill Special Recreation Management Area has been saved! This land will receive a conservation easement and be transferred to the Town of Carbondale for management and for the public’s perpetual use. Trail planning has commenced with contractors submitting proposals and the work will be awarded the third week in April. The public will have multiple opportunities to get involved in May and June during the planning/design phase. Volunteers will also be needed for the trail building itself in July and August. Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers have evening trail building opportunities scheduled for Tuesday nights starting on July 24th. Fourth, thanks to Garfield County Federal Mineral Lease District grant funding, you will see Town park improvements taking place this summer. Bonnie Fisher Park will receive a perimeter fence on the west side of the park, creating a barrier between the park and the bike path and Highway 133. At Sopris Park, we will be replacing some old playground equipment with a new balance element and adding a new ADA compatable spinning element. See you in the pool, playing in one of our parks, or on Red Hill building a new trail! Eric Brendlinger Parks & Recreation Director

Manager’s Message To My Carbondale Community, For those of you who do not know, the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center recently celebrated its 10th Birthday! While that is a big deal for us, it is all of you out there who ought to receive the accolades. We would not be here without our members, guests, and program participants! In honor of our decade milestone, I have some very special people I would like to honor. These people are very dear to our Rec Center family and deserve recognition for their steadfast loyalty to our facility. First of all, thank you to our most committed member, Gordon Nelson, for his continued patronage. Gordon has been a member since our first year of business back in 2008, and has amassed over 2,120 visits over the past 10 years—more than any other member we have ever had. Not only is Gordon a regular, but he always comes in with a smile on his face and something feisty to say to our staff at the Front Desk. For these reasons and so many more, Gordon is our Member of the Decade. It is because of members like Gordon that we love to come in to work every day. Secondly, I would like to honor our longeststanding part-time employee. John McCormick worked here since we opened, right up to our 10-year anniversary, retiring after his final shift that day. He was better than anyone at greeting all of our members by name, and his eternally positive attitude was contagious. It is because of employees like John that our members love to come in to our center every day. And finally, I would like to salute our Boss of the Decade, Eric Brendlinger. Eric has been my boss for more than 10 years, way back to when I was just a young pup part-timer myself. He is really smart, really patient, and if you did not already know, really hilarious, too. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to learn from him over the years. I could not ask for a better boss. I hope you have enjoyed the last 10 years as much as we have. If you somehow missed out on the last 10, it is never too late to join our Rec Center family. Come in any time! We would love to meet you, get to know you better, and have you be a part of our next 10 years. Here’s to the next decade of recreation! Jessi Rochel Recreation Programs and Community Center Manager

Swim Lessons

***Please note we are starting sessions one week later than usual to account for school getting out on June 8th. For this reason classes will be held over the week of July 4th. On that week we will have lessons Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Join us for our Pool Party, Wednesday July 4th!**** Welcome to Swim Lessons University; a progressive swim lesson system designed to make children safer when in and around the water. Please note, in this program, children in Pre-School, Beginners, and Intermediate lessons may be asked to wear swim aids. This is not a life jacket. Many younger children do not have the physical stamina or muscle strength to keep their body in the correct position during lessons. The swim aid affords children the opportunity to keep their body in the correct swim position to learn the proper strokes. As they progress we can remove flotation pads. Swim lesson fees are for swim lessons only. If the student, parent, or another family member wants to use the wading pool or swimming other than for lessons make sure to pay the appropriate general admission fee at the front desk.
