W

elcome to the Winter 2017 edition of the Paulerspury People. As outlined at the Section Annual General Meeting last December we have a new format for our newsletters. Barry Gallafent has stepped down as Newsletter Editor after several years of hard work producing the Paulerspury People four times each year. This is a good opportunity to thank him again for the hard work it takes to collate the information and produce our magazine. He will continue to maintain our website and Facebook page. From now on we will have two shorter Winter and Summer editions which will outline forthcoming events and include booking slips. The main Paulerspury People will be published in the Spring and Autumn and contain all the things you normally expect in your newsletter. We welcome Mia Murray as our new editor of these two editions. Kathy Martin Section Secretary secretary@rrecpaulerspury.org.uk 07714 954783

Future events now booking Leather Conservation Seminar – Saturday 11th March 2017 There are still places left for this one day seminar all about repairing, cleaning and re-colouring leather. There will be interesting insights into to the history of leather and how leather is made. This is a very hands-on day and an old sample of leather to take with you to practice on would be an advantage. This could be an old handbag or part of a car seat – but not from your car. However bring your car as you will get the opportunity at the end of the day to discuss the options for its leather upholstery. The cost of the seminar is £85 per person and will include refreshments during the day and a light lunch.

Longthorne Gunmakers - Friday 26th May 2017 (Please note date change)

We have the opportunity of visiting the production facility of Longthorne Gunmakers, an extremely respected shotgun manufacturer. Originally Longthorne were based in Lancashire but now manufacture in Northampton. They combine traditional gun making skills with state of the art machining equipment, manufacturing every part of the guns on site, from the wooden stock to the smallest component. They have patented their barrels which unlike other gun makers, are machined from one piece of high quality steel. The visit should take about two hours during a manufacturing day, so we will be able to see the complete range of processes. We are limited to 20 places, which I think will go rapidly, so if you are interested please reply quickly. Preference will be given to shooters if the visit is over subscribed. The cost will be £17.50 per person, which includes a donation to Longthorne's favoured charity “Shooting for Heroes”, tea or coffee on arrival, with breakfast, and a contribution to section funds.

Annual Rally – Burghley House -23rd, 24th & 25th June 2017 The Paulerspury Tailgate party on the Sunday of the Rally has become something of an institution in the Section, so no Annual would be complete without one. Caroline & Andrew Sykes are planning to be our hosts this year having been unable to do the honour last year due to failure to proceed issues. Look out for further details in the next issue of Paulerspury People.

Classics on the Common Harpenden – Wednesday 26th July 2017 This event, one of the largest car events in Europe, is extremely popular and great fun. Although the date is some way off, we wanted to share some of the changes. We will, of course, send out more detailed arrangements in a few weeks' time.

Paulerspury People – Winter 2017

Some of you will no doubt have heard about or experienced the heavy traffic problems incurred in trying to reach the common. This year, arrangements are well under way and the entry system is being changed to make the arrival of the cars much easier. Participating vehicles will be allowed on to the common from mid morning and well before spectators start arriving in the town. A small fee will be charged for doing this. We have booked tables for lunch at The Harpenden Arms which is right on the edge of the common. This will enable us to park up and then walk across to the gastro pub for lunch. To enable us to park together, we will gather for coffee at 10.45am and then proceed together to the common. Classic Cars will be a minimum of 25 years old, unless they have attended a previous event. There will be a new category of early entry ticket giving access from 11am. Cost of standard Classics ticket allowing entry from 2pm will increase by £2 to £12 Cost of the new early entry ticket will be £17, £5 more than the standard ticket. If you know that you would like to join us, please do let us know by telephone or email. We don't need to know definite numbers yet but it is always helpful to have some idea in advance so that we can increase/decrease our provisional booking at the coffee venue and pub. Bookings in the local hostelries are always high on Classics day! Caroline and Andrew Sykes 01582 713839 cmsykes17@gmail.com

Visit to The Menagerie, Horton, Northamptonshire 10.30 am on Saturday 8th July 2017 (please note date change) Once a dilapidated folly, the Menagerie was purchased in 1973 by the late Gervase Jackson-Stops and converted into a unique private house with spectacular gardens. If you love plants and are interested in garden design, note the date of this event in your diary. We have arranged a private visit for you to view the gardens of The Menagerie, a truly special, fairy tale garden – that’s all we’re saying! Full details and booking form in the next PP but SAVE THE DATE.
