SUMMER IMPACT COLLEGE TOUR TRIPS Sponsored by the Community Foundation Youth Action Committee (YAC)

Overview of Summer Impact Grant • Each summer, CapCAN collaborates with our

community partners to foster a college-going mindset in young people with college visits and goal setting conversations. Students were invited to participate in four college visits. Nearly 80 students from 4th through 12th graders participated with a few students attending all five trips.

First Stop‌

University of Michigan Ann Arbor

UM • At the University of Michigan Ann Arbor (U of M) visit students

engaged in collaborative conversations as they discussed different prompts such as: “Why do people go to college”, “What do you know about college”, and questions they had about college. This team building activity lead to engaging conversations with one another and their near peers about college. After lunch, two student tour guides joined the students for a bus tour of the campus. Students asked many questions and the tour guides were open about college life and their own experiences at UM.

Central Michigan University

CMU • The Central Michigan University (CMU) visit included a

presentation about academics, scholarships, financial aid and other components of the application process and college life. Students asked questions about diversity, college life, sports, and living in the dorm. CMU provided the group with typical cafeteria lunch. Students took a survey at the end of the trip. One student remarked, " I learned that in-state tuition is cheaper than out-of-state college. Central is much cheaper than I thought. You can double up on scholarships."

Kendall College of Arts & Design

Kendall • The third college tour visit to Kendall College of Art and Design

(KCAD) of Ferris State University exposed students to higher education options and broad range of careers in art and design. Students explored fashion design, industrial design, furniture design, and drawing. One student commented in the survey that, "there are so many kinds of art you can learn about and there are special schools for it."

LCC •

The final summer college tour trip was to Lansing Community College Downtown and West Campus. Students started their day at the Technical Career programs at LCC West Campus touring the Police/Fire Academy, Digital Design, the Automotive Program, and the new Center for Manufacturing Excellence which includes Advanced Manufacturing, Robotics, and Welding. After lunch, we drove downtown to Main campus where students took a tour and learned about the different programs offered in the Department of Health and Human Services. Students experienced the state of the art labs for Basic Emergency Medical Services, Community Health Service Education, Health/Wellness, Human Services, and Military Medic/Advanced EMT to Paramedic, Nursing, and Radiologic Technology /MRI. The students loved the LCC swag and enjoyed a brain exercise break in the Kinesiology lab. "I learned about how many different jobs were similar because they all require math and science”, responded one student. “I learned that nurses have to practice on mannequins before they work on real people," remarked another student. “There are many health care career options."
