Episcopal turns back the clock with ‘Hairspray’

Advocate staff report Episcopal School students staged “Hairspray” on April 21-24, singing and dancing through 18 musical numbers and donning iconic 1960s costumes. The play was held in the school’s Visual and Performing Arts Center under the director of Episcopal faculty member Paige Gagliano. Music director was Paul Taranto and Carter Smith served as assistant musical director. Christine Chrest was the choreographer, Louis Gagliano was in charge of lighting and set design, Kristen Kirschner handled costumes and Lewis Rhodes led sound design. Mckenzie Dorris took on the lead role of Tracy Turnblad and Erin Rynes portrayed Edna Turnblad, the role played by John Travolta in the 2007 remake of the 1988 comedy movie, which was staged on Broadway in 2002. The role of Wilbur Turnblad was played by Jack Bowman and Sicily Wafer played Penny Lou Pingleton. Also starring in the play were Lauren Scott, Katherine Ann Andreeff, Amani Miller, Jim Conklin, Eli Haymon and Jeremiah Mayes.

Advocate staff report Senior Kara Peneguy was selected to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award for 2015 at Runnels High School. The award is presented to outstanding seniors across the nation who demonstrate the qualities of good citizenship, including reliability, service, leadership, Peneguy good character and patriotism, a news release from the school said. Peneguy, a member of Senior Beta, Free the Children and the National Honor Society at Runnels, has served as a volunteer for Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Miracle League. An Honor Roll student and 12year member of Girl Scout Troop 100360, she served on the 2015 Runnels Homecoming Court. She was recognized for her volunteer service at the National Charity League’s Senior Soiree. “Kara exemplifies the qualities embodied in the DAR Award both within our school and outside in the community,” Runnels Junior and Senior High Principal and Guidance Counselor Conchetta Foshee said. “She is a well-rounded young lady with a very positive outlook on life. We are proud to name her as our DAR recipient for the 2015 school year.” All high school seniors are eligible for the award, but only one from each school is selected to receive it. Members of the high school faculty select the winner. Peneguy is the daughter of Teresa and Mark Peneguy.

A former Baton Rouge Boy Scout has earned the Eagle Scout Award. Brandon Anthony Breecher, of Pflugerville, Texas, has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award. Breecher will be recognized in ceremonies on May 15 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Pflugerville, a release said. He is a member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Troop 711. He began Scouting in Baton Rouge as a Tiger Cub with Pack 5 of the Istrouma Area Council before crossing over to Boy Scouts into Troop 370 of the Andrew Jackson Council in Madison, Mississippi, and finally transferring to Troop 711 of the Capital Area Council. Breecher has been inducted into the Order of the Arrow and earned the Pope Pius IX Religious Emblem. Breecher’s grandfather, Royce D. Elkins earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1951.

LSMSA students perform in recital

Runnels students win Baton Rouge Holocaust essay contest Advocate staff report Runnels School seventh-grader Reed Stewart and 10th-grader Jena Bordelon won first place in their age divisions in the 2015 Holocaust Memorial Essay Contest. The annual competition was sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Ba- Stewart ton Rouge and The Advocate, a news release said. In addition, Runnels students Madison Sutton, eighthgrade, placed Bordelon second in the middle school division and Jeehan Mikdadi, 10th-grade, placed third in the high school division. Out of a field of nine finalists in the essay competition, four attend Runnels, the release said. For this year’s contest, participants were offered the opportunity to write about making deci-

sions that not only affect themselves, but those around them. Winners were announced April 19 at a Holocaust Memorial Program held at Congregation B’nai Israel. Each first-place winner was awarded a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble and $50 in cash. Participants earning second- and third-place recognition

received $35 gift cards to Barnes and Noble and $35 and $25 in cash, respectively. Runnels students wrote their essays as assignments in English class, the release said. Their compositions were submitted by junior high teachers Sherry Wilks and Kylie Harbin and high school teacher Colleen LeBlanc.
