Planning is underway for Ascension Parish’s
fourth Hot Air Balloon Festival set for Sept. 25-26 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center. In addition to towering, colorful hot air balloons, this year’s festival will feature more
carnival rides, an expanded Children’s Village and a balloon photo booth. Parish President Tommy Martinez, the Ascension Parish Council, along with the
Ascension Festivals and Cultural Council Inc. said balloonists from around the country will
again descend upon the parish for the festival.
The first two hot air balloon festivals were organized by a nonprofit group headed
by businessman Brad Walker, but parish government revamped the festival operations after two years. äSee BALLOON, page 3G

The Ascension Fund boarrd, sponsors and volunteers ma anaged to surprise teachers at 20 Ascension Parish schools wiith the news that they have rer ceived grant funds to suppo ort innovative and creative metthods of learning for students. The Ascension Fund, a no onprofit organization, awarde ed $50,500 in its latest round of competitive grants. A total of 41 grants werre recently awarded, includin ng eight School Impact Grants for $2,500 each and 33 Teache er Grants ranging between $50 00 and $1,000. “Here in Ascension, we ge et to count our blessings,” saiid Michael Buturla, Ascensio on Fund vice president. “We hav ve wonderful, talented teacherrs who are willing to go the ex xtra mile to enrich the learning experience for their studentss, and we have local businesses and individuals who appreciate e the value of our children’s edu ucation and are willing to invesst in them.” The Ascension Fund was established in 1991 as a projectt of the Rotary Club of Gonzaless. Original pledges of $800,000 0 were placed in an endowment,, the income that now pays forr the grants. The fund provided d its first grant in 1992 and since e then has given more 1,100 0 grants representing $1.3 mil-lion in awards to area public c schools and teachers. The Ascension Fund is guided by a board of directors, and the invested funds are overseen by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. The couple are engaged to marry on February 5, 2016, at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church in Gonzales, LA. The bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joel Le Blanc of Denham Springs, LA and the late Melissa LeJeune Le Blanc. She is the granddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Le Blanc of Baton Rouge, and Mr. and Mrs. Winston Fontenot of Pine Prairie, LA. She is a graduate of Denham Springs High School
and attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. She is an Operating Partner with Domino’s. Her fiancé is the son of Mr. & Mrs. David Jandle of Brusly, LA. He is the grandson of Ms. Carolyn Parsons of Vicksburg, MS and the late Mr. James Parsons of Brusly, LA and Ms. Geraldine Jandle of Baton Rouge and Mr. Frank Jandle of Bakersfield, CA.
