ATHLETICS
Continued from page 1H fish, the sport has made its way to the salt water and even in the blue water in the Gulf of Mexico. The sport of catching a halfpound bream now includes catching marlin that weigh hundreds of pounds. That means fly baits have changed a lot over the years, as well. We have a group of folks right here in Ascension Parish, led by Darrel Crawford, who have taken to the art of fly-tying and meet in the late winter and early spring to display and teach the art of tying a fly to fish with. These classes take place at the Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales on Feb. 14, March 14, April 11 and May 9 from 9 am to noon. One could learn how to tie basic flies to catch bream and bass and saltwater flies. Even if you might not be interested in learning to tie a fly, just watching these experts creating their art is worth a visit.

Canaan caught one bass and I caught two, but the memory I’ll keep for a long time is what he said and did. He gave me a big hug and said, “Thank you, Paw Paw, for taking me fishing. I love you.” That’s way better than the 6-pound bass I caught. Lyle Johnson covers sports for The Ascension Advocate. He can be contacted at reelman@eatel.net or ascension@theadvocate. com.
