COLOUR, CULTURE AND CELEBRATION
A LAND OF CONTRASTS AND ENDLESS DISCOVERY
MEXICO
DESTINATION REVIEW
Few places in the world ignite the senses quite like Mexico. A country where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern life, where vibrant markets hum with energy, and where every corner reveals a story waiting to be told.
From the sun-drenched beaches of the Riviera Maya to the colonial charm of San Miguel de Allende and the dramatic landscapes of Copper Canyon, Mexico is a land of contrasts and endless discovery.
Its deep cultural roots stretch back thousands of years, visible in the awe-inspiring pyramids of Teotihuacán and the mystical ruins of Chichén Itzá. Yet, Mexico is just as much about its living traditions, its world-renowned cuisine, its electrifying music, and its people, who welcome visitors with open arms. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or immersion in its rich history, Mexico delivers in spectacular fashion.
WATERFALLS AGUAS AZUL
THE BEST TIME TO VISIT MEXICO
Mexico is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. The dry season, from November to April, offers warm, pleasant weather with little rain, perfect for beach holidays and exploring cities without the sweltering heat.
For those looking to experience Mexico’s festivals at their peak, late October to early November is unmissable, as the country bursts into life for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). If you’re keen to witness one of the most spectacular natural events, visit between January and March, when millions of monarch butterflies descend upon the forests of Michoacán. Spring (March to May) is ideal for visiting colonial cities like Guanajuato and Puebla, while summer and early autumn bring lush landscapes and fewer crowds, despite occasional heavy rains.
MEXICO CITY: THE HEART OF THE NATION
Mexico City, one of the most exciting capitals in the world, is a sensory overload in the best possible way. It’s a city where you can wander through ancient Aztec ruins in the morning, admire colonial architecture in the afternoon, and dine at a world-class restaurant in the evening.
A must-see is the Zócalo, the vast central square surrounded by landmarks such as the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, where Diego Rivera’s murals depict Mexico’s complex history. For art lovers, Casa Azul, the former home of Frida Kahlo, offers an intimate look into the life of one of Mexico’s most beloved artists.
To escape the city’s bustle, take a trip to Xochimilco, a UNESCO-listed network of canals where brightly painted trajinera boats glide through the water to the sound of mariachi bands. And no visit to the capital is complete without exploring Teotihuacán, the ancient city of pyramids just outside Mexico City, where the towering Pyramid of the Sun offers breathtaking views.
THE MAGIC OF MEXICO’S COLONIAL CITIES
Beyond the capital, Mexico’s colonial cities captivate with their cobbled streets, colourful facades, and rich history. San Miguel de Allende, often hailed as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, is a dreamlike blend of 18th-century architecture, lively plazas, and an artistic spirit that draws creatives from around the globe.
In Guanajuato, a city built on silver mining wealth, winding alleyways lead to hidden courtyards, baroque churches, and the legendary Callejón del Beso (Alley of the Kiss), where a tragic love story unfolded. Puebla, famed for its exquisite Talavera pottery and irresistible mole poblano, enchants with its beautifully preserved colonial centre.
Further south, Oaxaca offers a feast for the senses. Known for its indigenous culture,
artisan crafts, and extraordinary gastronomy, this city is the perfect place to sample mezcal, explore the nearby ruins of Monte Albán, and witness the vibrant Guelaguetza festival in July.
THE BEACHES AND COASTAL WONDERS
Mexico’s coastline, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, boasts some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. The Riviera Maya, home to Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, is a paradise of powdery white sands and turquoise waters. Tulum, in particular, offers a stunning blend of history and nature, where Mayan ruins perch dramatically above the Caribbean.
On the Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita provide a perfect mix of beachside relaxation and lively culture, while Baja
California is a haven for surfers and nature lovers. Between December and April, the waters off Los Cabos come alive with migrating grey whales, a spectacular sight for visitors.
For something truly unique, visit Las Coloradas, the pink salt lakes of Yucatán, or take a dip in one of the thousands of cenotes, natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water, sacred to the ancient Maya.
FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS: THE SOUL OF MEXICO
Mexicans know how to celebrate, and their festivals are among the most vibrant in the world. Perhaps the most famous is Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), celebrated on 1st and 2nd November. Far from being a sombre
occasion, this deeply symbolic holiday is a time to honour the deceased with altars, marigolds, and offerings of food and drink. The best places to experience it include Pátzcuaro, Oaxaca, and Mexico City, where the celebrations reach dazzling heights.
In February, Mexico bursts into carnival mode, with the biggest festivities taking place in Veracruz and Mazatlán, featuring colourful parades, dancing, and music-filled streets. Semana Santa (Holy Week), celebrated in March or April, is another major event, with dramatic religious processions taking place across the country.
For those visiting in July, the Guelaguetza Festival in Oaxaca showcases the diverse indigenous cultures of the region through traditional dances, music, and extravagant costumes. Meanwhile, Independence Day (16th September) is marked by fireworks, street parties, and the rousing cry of “El Grito de Dolores”, which echoes from town squares nationwide.
LOCAL EXPERIENCES
FOOD:
A CULINARY JOURNEY THROUGH MEXICO
Mexican cuisine is one of the world’s most celebrated, and each region offers its own signature dishes.
In the streets of Mexico City, try tacos al pastor, flame-grilled pork topped with pineapple, or indulge in a steaming bowl of pozole, a rich hominy stew. In Mexico, you can also find 18 Michelin starred restaurants including the World's first Mexican taco stand.
In Oaxaca, sample mole negro, a deep, complex sauce made from dozens of ingredients, including chocolate and chilli. Along the coast, fresh seafood reigns supreme, with ceviche and aguachile providing a refreshing treat on a hot day. And of course, no trip to Mexico is complete without trying authentic churros, tamales, and a glass of horchata or tepache.
For fine dining, Mexico boasts some of the world’s best restaurants, including Pujol in Mexico City, where chef Enrique Olvera elevates traditional Mexican flavours into an art form.
Mexico is a land that stays with you long after you leave. It is a country where every experience, whether exploring ancient ruins, savouring a home-cooked meal, or witnessing a festival, feels immersive and deeply personal.
With its unparalleled warmth, breathtaking scenery, and a culture as rich as its history, Mexico is not just a place to visit, but a place to feel. Whether you’re watching the sunrise over Chichén Itzá, dancing in the streets during Día de los Muertos, or floating down the canals of Xochimilco with mariachis in the background, Mexico ensures that every moment is unforgettable.
No matter when you go or what draws you there, one thing is certain, you’ll leave Mexico with a heart full of memories and a longing to return.
SONGKRAN FESTIVAL
THAILAND'S WATER-SPLASHING NEW YEAR CELEBRATION
The Songkran Festival, also known as the Thai New Year, is one of Thailand's most vibrant and eagerly awaited celebrations.
Held annually from April 13th to 15th, Songkran marks the end of the dry season and the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. This festival is famous for its spirited water fights, cultural rituals, and communal festivities, making it an unforgettable experience for both locals and tourists.
HISTORY AND ORIGINS: The term "Songkran" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Sankranti," which means the astrological passage or transformation. Originally, Songkran marked the beginning of the solar calendar, coinciding with the arrival of the New Year according to the Buddhist and Hindu solar calendars. This festival was a time of renewal and purification, signifying the end of the dry season and the onset of the rainy season, which is crucial for Thailand's agriculture.
TRADITIONAL SIGNIFICANCE AND ACTIVITIES: Traditionally, Songkran is more than just a festive occasion; it holds profound spiritual and cultural significance. Water, which plays a central role in the celebrations, symbolizes purification and the washing away of sins and bad luck. During Songkran,
Thais engage in merit-making activities such as visiting temples, offering food to monks, and pouring water over Buddha statues. This traditional ritual, called Song Nam Phra, involves gently pouring scented water over Buddha statues to wash away any bad luck in preparation for the new year.
Another important tradition is Rot Nam Dam Hua, where younger generations pour water over the hands of their elders to receive blessings in return. This act of respect and humility is a significant part of the festival.
MODERN CELEBRATIONS: While the traditional aspects of Songkran are still observed, the festival has evolved to include more modern and lively activities. The most iconic of these is the water fight, where people of all ages take to the streets armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses to drench each other in good-natured
In addition to water fights, Songkran celebrations feature vibrant parades, cultural performances, and street parties. The festival atmosphere is electric, with music,
dancing, and a sense of camaraderie that brings people together.
WHY GO AND WHERE TO SEE
BANGKOK: The capital city hosts some of the most elaborate water fights along Silom Road and Khao San Road, where music, dancing, and large crowds create an electrifying atmosphere.
CHIANG MAI: Known as the cultural hub for Songkran, Chiang Mai hosts parades, traditional ceremonies, and one of Thailand’s largest water fights around the city moat.
PHUKET: Known for its beach vibes, Phuket’s Bangla Road becomes a festive battleground, blending locals, tourists, and expats celebrating together with beach views and endless entertainment.
The Songkran Festival is a celebration of renewal, community, and joy. Whether you're participating in the traditional rituals or joining in the lively water fights, Songkran offers a unique and unforgettable experience that captures the essence of Thai culture.
HOW UGA HOTELS IS REDEFINING LUXURY HOSPITALITY
For Priyanjith Weerasooria, CEO of Uga Hotels, the journey into hospitality was far from conventional. Born into a family of builders and textile manufacturers, his background was rooted in construction. However, in the early 2000s, during a period of economic downturn, his family sought new opportunities to repurpose their skills.
“In 2008, we had extra capacity as builders and developers, and we decided to embark on a project in Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle,” he recalls. The initial plan was simple, construct a property and either lease or sell it. But fate had other ideas.
With the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war in 2009, the country saw a revival in tourism. Priyanjith and his family decided to try their hand at hotel management, marking the start of their accidental foray into the industry. “Two years later, we had two more properties on the East Coast, an area previously ravaged by war. We became one of the first hospitality brands to establish luxury properties in that region,” he explains.
Fast forward to today, and Uga Hotels has expanded to seven boutique properties, each deeply rooted in Sri Lanka’s culture, community, and commitment to sustainability.
A FRESH TAKE ON LUXURY: REDEFINING SRI LANKAN HOSPITALITY
Unlike the traditional large-scale resorts Sri Lanka was known for pre-war—often catering to mass-market tourism—Uga Hotels adopted a different approach. “We always wanted to focus on the niche luxury segment,” Priyanjith says. “Instead of quantity, we prioritised quality.”
Uga Hotels became synonymous with immersive luxury, offering guests experiences beyond just high-end accommodation. The company’s ethos revolves around “authentic Sri Lankan hospitality.”
“Sri Lankans are naturally warm and welcoming. Even in the humblest of homes, you’ll be offered a cup of tea and made to feel like family. We wanted to bring that same warmth to our properties,” he explains.
By integrating Sri Lankan heritage into its culinary offerings, service standards, and design elements, Uga has successfully carved out a distinctive identity.
SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL IMPACT: MORE THAN A BUZZWORD
While sustainability has become a marketing catchphrase in global hospitality, for Uga Hotels, it is a fundamental pillar. From the outset, the brand embedded environmental and social responsibility into its operations.
“We didn’t start talking about sustainability just because it became trendy. Our very first property, Ulagalla, was built to LEED Gold certification standards back in 2008,” Priyanjith notes.
Uga Hotels’ sustainability initiatives revolve around three key pillars—women, water, and wildlife.
WOMEN: The company actively supports female employment, particularly in areas affected by the war. “In the North and East, we noticed many war widows and single mothers in need of livelihoods. We prioritised hiring them and supporting women-led businesses for our supply chain,” he says. Today, Uga Hotels employs female villa managers and general managers and partners with female artisans for in-room amenities and guest gifts.
WILDLIFE: Many of Uga’s properties are set in nature-rich environments, often home to elephants and leopards. “Human-elephant conflict is a major issue in Sri Lanka, with farmers encroaching on elephant habitats. We’ve collaborated with experts to fund elephant fencing and educate communities on coexistence,” he explains.
WATER: One of Sri Lanka’s lesser-known crises is water contamination, particularly in rural areas due to over-fertilisation. “It’s a personal passion project of mine. We’ve built eight water purification plants so far, providing clean drinking water to villages. We plan to build four more each year,” he says.
By embedding these initiatives into daily operations, Uga Hotels ensures that luxury travel contributes positively to both people and the planet.
SCALING UP WHILE STAYING BOUTIQUE
With seven properties under the Uga umbrella, maintaining the brand’s boutique ethos while expanding has been a balancing act.
“We don’t want to become a cookie-cutter hotel chain. Each property is designed
to have its own identity, experience, and character,” Priyanjith explains.
To manage growth while preserving the essence of a boutique experience, Uga Hotels has segmented its portfolio. Properties with fewer than 20 rooms focus on ultra-luxury, while those with up to 50 rooms cater to a slightly broader audience, but never at the expense of personalised service.
“We won’t go beyond 50 to 60 keys per property,” he affirms. “Once you get into 100+ room hotels, you lose the ability to offer truly bespoke hospitality.”
EVOLVING WITH GLOBAL TRAVEL TRENDS
Luxury travel is constantly evolving, and Uga Hotels is keenly attuned to shifting guest expectations.
“Sustainability has become a nonnegotiable. Travellers want authentic, regenerative experiences rather than just indulgence,” Priyanjith notes.
The brand is placing greater emphasis on immersive travel, from offering guests the chance to hand-roll their own tea at Uga Halwala to engaging with local communities in meaningful ways. “Families, in particular, are looking for transformative experiences for their children. We encourage interactions with local kids, be it a casual game of cricket or a school visit, to foster cross-cultural exchanges,” he adds.
Sri Lanka’s connectivity is also improving, making once-remote locations more
accessible. “The road network has significantly improved, and seaplanes provide quicker transfers. We see more guests doing multi-property stays, covering cultural sites, wildlife parks, and beach resorts in one trip,” he says.
SRI LANKA’S RESILIENCE AND THE FUTURE OF UGA HOTELS
Despite Sri Lanka’s economic challenges, tourism remains a pillar of its recovery. “We’ve had to be incredibly agile,” Priyanjith admits. “Unlike in more stable economies, long-term planning isn’t always possible here. We focus on flexible, short-term strategies that allow us to pivot as needed.”
Sri Lanka currently welcomes around 2.6 million tourists annually, but there’s vast potential for growth. Air connectivity remains a challenge, and Uga Hotels is actively engaged in discussions with the government and airlines to push for better flight access.
Looking ahead, Uga Hotels is eyeing regional expansion beyond Sri Lanka’s borders. “We’re considering Southern India as a potential next step. There’s a lot of cultural and historical synergy between our regions,” he hints.
However, at the heart of Uga’s mission remains its unwavering commitment to showcasing Sri Lanka’s beauty to the world.
“When our guests leave, we don’t want them to just remember Uga Hotels— we want them to remember Sri Lanka. If they go home and tell five friends how incredible this country is, we’ve done our job,” Priyanjith concludes.
EMBARK ON A WHIRLWIND ADVENTURE
AN UTTERLY ENCHANTING EXPERIENCE
DESTINATION REVIEW
BY ANDREA THOMPSON
Iwas captivated by Malta as a destination that truly has it all. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, this region offers something for everyone. So, pack your bags and get ready to be enchanted from the small part of what I saw of this Island.
Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean and renowned for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. Its strategic location has made it a coveted prize for various civilizations throughout history, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and the Knights of St. John. Gaining independence from Britain in 1964 it became a republic in 1974. Today, it’s a member of the European Union and popular destination for tourists and business travellers alike.
Although a short and sweet trip, visiting just a few places, it gave me a taste to return.
SLIEMA
Once a quiet fishing village, this was a coastal retreat for the well-to-do Maltese families in the 1900s. They built summer houses and private swimming pools carved into the rocks which are still visible and in use today. This area is still one of the most coveted prime locations on the island.
With its hub for shopping, dining, and nightlife, Sliema is ideal for business travellers looking to unwind. The town's promenade offers stunning views of the capital city Valletta across Marsamxett Harbour and the Mediterranean Sea You’ll find numerous ferries making the short hop across to Valletta in just 10 minutes.
I should mention the beach club Manta with its outdoor pool, loungers, bars and restaurant serving delicious Mediterranean fusion food. My favourite place to eat, drink and people watch.
There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and shopping centres which include The Point.
NEED TO KNOW
WHEN TO GO: The best time to visit Malta is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are fewer.
GETTING THERE FROM UK: Numerous airlines offer direct flights including Air Malta, BA, Ryanair and easyjet from London. The flight duration for a direct route is approximately 3 and half hours and costing on average from £33 to £146.00 These prices vary depending on the time of booking, travel dates, and availability.
TIME DIFFERENCE: -1 hour London is behind Valletta.
CARBON OFFSET: Given the distance between London and Malta which is roughly 2,100km, this produces approximately 7,828 KG of CO2 emissions per passenger each way and we would encourage you to offset your carbon footprint appropriately.
VISA: UK citizens do not require a visa to enter Malta for short-term stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes. Upon arrival, you will receive a visa stamp in your passport, allowing you to stay for up to 90 days.
CURRENCY: Euro (€).
VACCINATIONS:
No mandatory vaccinations required but if arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk for yellow fever you will require a certificate.
MDINA
Known as the "Silent City" Mdina is a fortified city with history dating back to around the 8th century BC. It served as Malta's capital until the medieval period and its name derives from the Arabic word "madīnah" meaning "city".
Offering a serene escape with its medieval charm and historical significance, visitors should take time to explore the narrow streets on a guided tour to understand the true history. Our guide Clive Cortis shared a wealth of knowledge as we meandered through Mdina to Rabat.
Visit St. Paul's Cathedral, the Mdina Gate (Game of Thrones fans will remember this from season one) or simply enjoy the panoramic views from the bastions.
NAXXAR VILLAGE
Naxxar's history dates to the prehistoric era, with evidence of Punic tombs and catacombs. The village is believed to have been one of the first to convert to Christianity following the shipwreck of St. Paul.
It offers a mix of historical sites and local culture, providing a unique experience.
This grand building with its original arched façade was once developed by the Knights of St John and then enhanced as barracks for the British. It’s now a shopper’s paradise with the largest concentration of exclusive brands in Malta, all under one roof.
GRAND HARBOUR
This natural harbour, used since prehistoric times, played a crucial role during the Great Siege of 1565 and World War II. It has been a key naval base for various civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Romans and the Knights of St. John.
With its blend of historical significance and modern amenities, it’s perfect for sightseeing or relaxation. I took a guided tour harbour cruise. The commentary onboard pointed out buildings with added historic facts and even where some of the scenes of Gladiator II were filmed. Other places to visit are Fort St. Angelo, The Malta Maritime Museum and Inquisitor's Palace. The harbour’s fortifications and panoramic views of the Three Cities; Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua was one of the highlights of the trip.
I explored Palazzo Parisio with its ornate rooms, manicured gardens and the largest lemons I have seen growing outside of Italy.
See Naxxar parish church, with its ornately decorated interior or walk down the charming narrow streets with brightly painted front doors and pregnant windows (if you have been to Malta before you will immediately recognise these). These landmarks make it a delightful destination away from the hustle of tourists but being less than 25 minutes from most parts of the island, it’s a central location to stay in.
CHILL OUT SPOTS
BLUE LAGOON COMINO: Take the early ferry across to swim in the crystal-clear waters between Malta and Gozo.
DINGLI CLIFFS: The highest point on the island with waves crashing almost 250m below and the best view of the sunset the island has to offer.

The azure sea framed by stunning cliffs took my breath away. Although I haven’t explored the entire island, the warmth of the Maltese people and the mouthwatering cuisine have left an indelible mark on my heart. The treasures I experienced make me eager to return and uncover the remaining wonders of this captivating island. Malta, I'll be back!

COMFORT, EASE AND RELIABILITY
DOESN'T HAVE
TO COST EXTRA
BY JENNA BROWN, DIRECTOR OF UBER FOR BUSINESS
UK
Whenyou travel for business, it’s with a purpose in mind. The priority is where you’re going. But, it would be incorrect to say how you get there doesn’t matter.
The expectation is that if you are being asked to travel for work, the mode of transport is at least comfortable and reliable. No one wants to arrive at a business meeting feeling achy and late as a result of a cramped journey or unexpected delays.
At the same time, that doesn’t mean all travellers are entitled to be picked up by a chauffeur driven limousine. A compromise usually needs to be found between comfort and luxury. The problem is there’s a grey area. And when you land in a new city and are unfamiliar with the local transport companies, how do you know what’s acceptable?
Well, Uber for Business solves this dilemma by being a familiar transport provider that you can find all around the world. We allow you to book a comfy vehicle, be that an Uber X, Business Comfort or Business Exec, without any risk of breaking the company travel policy - that’s because if the vehicle is
out of scope, travellers will be sent a pop up to inform them of this and will be unable to place their booking.
While restrictions may mean not all travellers will be able to use Uber Lux and travel in a high-end vehicle, it does provide certainty that wherever you are in the world you can just turn up and order a ride - as simple as that. And, that can be almost anywhere, as we cover more than 70 different countries around the globe.
Not only that, you need not be concerned about expense claims either. When you link your Uber for Business profile to your corporate account, there is no need to keep receipts - everything is automated. This doesn’t just apply for rides either. If you need food, you can also order from Uber Eats. If it’s covered by your travel policy, then enjoy your meal, without worrying about receipts and expenses.
In addition to enjoying a comfortable ride (and being well fed), travellers also have the reassurance that they need never be left waiting for transport - especially when the ride is booked with Uber Reserve. This service allows travellers to arrange a ride up to 90 days in advance, with no cancellation fee up to 60 minutes before the booking. It even includes 15 minutes of wait time, so riders don’t have to rush off if meetings run over.
If you know you will be travelling at peak times, this will likely work out cheaper as it will lock in the price at the time of booking and help you to avoid surge charging. On the whole, when compared to the alternatives, the features available, along with the set travel policies and low rates, helps the average employer to save at least 10% on travel costs when using Uber for Business. In many cases, these savings can be much higher.
It really doesn’t need to cost extra to enjoy comfort, simplicity and reliability when you want to take a ride, wherever you are going.

LITHUANIA IN A WEEKEND:
LITHUANIA
A 48HR GUIDE
FAs the sport barrels toward another extensive season in 2025, featuring a 24race schedule that blends the futuristic with the traditional, the appeal of its classic circuits remains as powerful as ever.
Indeed, four of the seven tracks from Formula 1’s inaugural 1950 season, Silverstone, Circuit de Monaco, Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, remain deeply cherished by drivers and fans alike, signifying the sport’s ability to straddle both past and present.
Here, Richard Alvin, looks at ten of the greatest Formula 1 circuits that have not only helped shape the sport’s 70-plus-year heritage but continue to thrill attendees with adrenaline-charged racing and unforgettable experiences. From the oldworld charm of Monaco to the superspeed straights of Monza, consider these “mustvisit” F1 circuits to add to your motorsport bucket list in 2025.
AUTODROMO NAZIONALE DI MONZA ITALY
Arguably the crown jewel of classic Formula 1 circuits, the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza will forever hold a special place in motorsport history. Situated just outside Milan in a large city park, this storied track turned 100 years old only a few seasons ago. It has hosted a World Championship Grand Prix every year since 1950, bar one season, and continues to deliver some of the fastest lap times on the calendar. Many of the original track features remain, including iconic corners such as the Curva Grande and the Lesmos, although the once-used, high-speed banked oval was retired in 1961.
CIRCUIT DE MONACO MONACO
First used for racing in 1929, Circuit de Monaco is woven into the fabric of Formula 1 folklore. Perched on the French Riviera, the streets of this glamorous principality boast tight, narrow corners, creating one of the trickiest, most unforgiving circuits in motorsport. Modern F1 cars, which have grown wider and more complex, often struggle to overtake here, but that’s part of the circuit’s charm. Even if wheel-to-wheel battles are limited, watching cars skim past the barriers with millimetres to spare is an unmatched spectacle of precision and courage.
F1 CIRCUITS TO
EXPERIENCE IN
ormula 1 continues to race ahead into new and exciting territories—most notably adding fresh Grand Prix events in places like Miami and Las Vegas—yet it maintains a strong foothold at its most beloved and time-honoured venues.
SILVERSTONE UK
Dating back to 1948, Silverstone played host to Formula 1’s first official World Championship race in 1950. Carved out of a former Second World War airfield, the track famously lacks significant elevation changes, but its highspeed sections and flowing corners more than compensate. Over the decades, legends like Nigel Mansell, Lewis Hamilton, and Ayrton Senna have etched their names into Silverstone’s history. It’s renowned for delivering some of the sport’s most dramatic races—often playing into the unpredictability of British weather.
CIRCUIT DE SPAFRANCORCHAMPS BELGIUM
One of the ultimate tests of driver skill and bravery, Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in the Ardennes region of Belgium is Formula 1’s longest track at about 7 km. The original layout in the early days measured an incredible 15 km on public roads, weaving through picturesque valleys and forests. While shortened significantly in 1981 for safety reasons, Spa continues to demand the utmost precision, particularly through the legendary Eau Rouge-Raidillon sequence.
CIRCUIT GILLES VILLENEUVE FRANCE
Nestled on the man-made Île Notre-Dame in Montréal’s Saint Lawrence River, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been a staple on the F1 schedule for over 40 years. Named in honour of local hero Gilles Villeneuve after his tragic passing in 1982, the track has produced countless unforgettable moments—including Jenson Button’s improbable last-to-first victory in a rain-soaked 2011 race and Robert Kubica’s emotional breakthrough win in 2008.
AUTÓDROMO JOSÉ CARLOS PACE (INTERLAGOS) BRAZIL
Opened in 1940 in the São Paulo suburbs, Interlagos has a rich heritage in Brazilian motorsport, dating to the days of Emerson Fittipaldi and Carlos Pace. Initially an 8 km behemoth, the track was shortened in the 1990s, making it safer and better suited to modern F1. What remains unchanged is Interlagos’ reputation for close quarters racing, punishing bumps, and chaotic wet-weather showdowns. For decades, it often held the season-ending race, crowning champions in thrilling finales (famously in 2008 and 2012).
2025
RED BULL RING
HUNGARORING BUDAPEST
Debuting on the Formula 1 calendar in 1986, the Hungaroring was F1’s first foray behind the “Iron Curtain.” Despite initial scepticism, the event soon became a summer highlight. Tucked away in the hills near Budapest, the track is known for its low-speed, twisty nature that
places a premium on driver skill. It has delivered surprise results in the past, such as Damon Hill nearly achieving an impossible victory in an underdog Arrows in 1997.
RED BULL RING AUSTRIA
High up in the Styrian Alps, the Red Bull Ring represents an Austrian motorsport tradition stretching back to 1970, when it was known as the Österreichring. After safety concerns led to a hiatus, the track returned in a shortened form as the A1-Ring in the late 1990s. It dropped off the schedule again but made a triumphant comeback in 2014, thanks to Red Bull’s Dietrich Mateschitz, who invested heavily to restore and modernise the circuit. Despite the shortened layout, the Red Bull Ring packs a punch with rapid straights, elevation changes, and scenic mountain vistas.
SUZUKA CIRCUIT JAPAN
Another contender for the “ultimate driver’s track” moniker, Suzuka in Japan stands out with its unique figure-eight configuration. Built in 1960 as a Honda test track, it has hosted the Japanese Grand Prix since 1987 and remains a rite of passage for aspiring champions. Scenes of heartbreak and triumph are ingrained in Suzuka’s DNA, including the notorious collisions between Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna in the late 1980s and early 1990s. With challenging corners like 130R and the flowing Esses, it demands razor-sharp concentration from every driver.
CIRCUIT ZANDVOORT NETHERLANDS
Located in the sand dunes of the North Sea coastline, Circuit Zandvoort has been the Netherlands’ ultimate racing venue since 1948. After hosting 30 Grands Prix through 1985, it disappeared from the F1 scene for decades, only to roar back in 2021, galvanised by the meteoric rise of local hero Max Verstappen and his orangeclad “Oranje Army.” Though extensively revamped to meet modern safety standards, Zandvoort retains an old-school vibe with fast, undulating corners and panoramic coastal views.
WHY GO IN 2025?
Few events match the energising atmosphere conjured by Dutch fans, who bring a carnival spirit to race weekends. Beyond the track, Zandvoort’s beaches and lively summer culture beckon holidaymakers, while Amsterdam, one of Europe’s most vibrant cities, is within easy reach. Expect a well-organised, modern race weekend grounded in classic circuits heritage.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Some circuits that did not crack our top ten are nonetheless rich in history and revered by fans. Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari (Imola) has once again become a fixture on the calendar, hosting the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix; its origins date back to the 1950s, and it has seen numerous iconic races over the years. Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City is another circuit that has staged Formula 1 races for decades, enthralling fans with its high-altitude conditions and vibrant local culture. Among more contemporary additions to the F1 tour, Circuit de BarcelonaCatalunya in Spain and Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia, are fast approaching “classic” status, each having hosted Grands Prix for the better part of three decades.
There’s nothing quite like witnessing modern F1 cars charge through Monaco’s winding streets or fly past the old banking at Monza—living testaments to motorsport’s incredible journey. Whether you’re planning to attend one race or dreaming of a multicircuit pilgrimage in 2025, these ten tracks encapsulate the timeless thrill of grand prix racing. Each has its own stories of record-setting performances, storied rivalries, and unforgettable podium moments, reminding us that F1’s future is always built on the legacy of its past.

HOTELS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A NATURAL SPACE FOR WELLBEING:
NOW IT'S TIME TO STEP UP OUR GAME
BY TJ ABRAMS, VP OF GLOBAL WELLBEING AT HYATT
Wellness tourism expenditures are expected to hit $1.4 trillion by 2027, according to The Global Wellness Institute.
It’s no secret that consumers are increasingly looking to experience travel that positively impacts their mental, emotional, and physical health: from healthier food and drink options to fitness amenities, and even sleep tourism, which is expected to grow by over $400 billion between 2023 and 2028 globally. But what is driving this shift?
Wellbeing in hospitality is far from new, and, in a way, hotels have always been great places to explore and pick up new healthy habits to bring into our lives. However, as an industry we’re seeing a seismic shift - both in the demand for wellbeing experiences, and in what wellbeing means to travelers. Guests are thinking more deeply than ever before about the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, and physical health. As an industry, we are expected to listen closely to these evolving preferences and learn to adapt and evolve our wellbeing offerings in order to meet new expectations.
INDUSTRY-DEFINING TRENDS
There is a cluster of trends which are driving the shift towards wellbeing, and whilst, like many, I’m wary of over-attributing all these changes to Covid, many of them have been accelerated by the pandemic. The rise of loneliness, for example, is a global issue to which the hospitality industry can make a meaningful contribution. If you’re lacking connection, the simple act of being greeted at the front desk, of making eye contact with our staff, or of eating a meal in a shared space, can make a world of difference. For hospitality companies like Hyatt, this rise in loneliness calls for expanding and adapting our offerings to create a true sense of community for our guests, particularly as we continue to see growing demand for mental and emotional health initiatives and experiences. This is something Hyatt has made significant progress in accommodating through collaborations such as that with Headspace and MasterClass.
We are also witnessing the democratization of personalization – the concept that wellbeing is deeply individual, and something that should be accessible to all. For the hospitality sector, this means that guests of all demographics, not just those looking for high-end luxury, are craving tailored experiences that support their mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. According to our recent consumer insights research, 90% of US Gen-Y and Gen-Z believe that wellness looks different for everyone. The expectation of personalization, at scale, is driving a sea change in how wellness is understood, and the hospitality sector is going to have to be dynamic in its response. At Hyatt, we firmly believe that wellbeing is both personal and for all; that taking a portfolio approach, and infusing wellness throughout our more than 30 brands and more than 1,350 properties, will allow us to truly fulfill the promise of personalized wellbeing for every guest, in every kind of hotel. The launch of Hyatt’s Wellbeing Collective, a growing collection of more than 50 Hyatt properties around the globe that offer tailored wellbeing experiences to meet the specific needs of travelers, illustrates this commitment, alongside other wellbeingfocused partnerships. For example, our recent collaboration with Peloton responds to the greater emphasis our guests are placing on health and wellbeing amenities, and marks World of Hyatt as the first hospitality loyalty program to give members the opportunity to earn points for Peloton workouts on property globally.
As we continue to scale up these offerings, however, it will be critical to remember the contributions of our colleagues. You can’t provide genuine care if you don’t feel cared for yourself. That is why all our contributions in the wellbeing space have a colleague component, through discount offers, expanded access to wellbeing technology, and opportunities for employees to take part in the programs being delivered at our hotels.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
What wellbeing will look like in the next 5, 10 or 20 years remains to be seen. When I
look at my children today and think about the experiences which will shape them as they move into adulthood, technology is undoubtedly at the forefront. In our sector, the potential synergies between technology and wellbeing are huge. Through our partnership with Headspace, for example, Hyatt has been able to expose guests to an extraordinary range of mindfulness content, recognizing the surge in the popularity of sleep tourism and meditation as a way of self-improvement. Our sleep suite at Park Hyatt New York is another brilliant example of the merits of leveraging technology to respond to evolving guest preferences such as sleep tourism, with its Bryte Balance smart bed providing valuable insights on sleep patterns to support with a more restorative sleep.
I also expect that the food and drink landscape will continue to evolve. Health-conscious eating – but in a way which foregrounds enjoyment rather than restriction – is something which I anticipate booming in the years ahead. The hospitality industry has unique access to a range of world-leading chefs, who are well placed to lead the charge on the exciting new trends in the culinary space. We may well see guests using travel as an opportunity to trial new forms of health-focused eating – be that experimenting with non-alcoholic spirits or testing a different culture’s cuisine – which they then bring into their normal routines.
At Hyatt, this presents so many exciting opportunities – as we continue to grow at pace, entering new markets and reaching even more demographics, there are endless opportunities to scale our wellbeing offering in innovative and dynamic ways, such as responding to the growing topic of longevity through Blue Zone retreats and bio-hacking spa treatments, with our purpose of care at the core. We say we care for people so they can become the best version of themselves, and few things support that journey more than embracing and providing a truly holistic approach to wellbeing.
RELAIS HENLEY
A TIMELESS RETREAT WITH MODERN FLAIR THE
Nestled in the scenic town of Henley-on-Thames, The Relais Henley is a charming boutique hotel that seamlessly combines historic allure with modern luxury.
My recent stay at this elegant retreat was truly delightful, an ideal mix of comfort, history, and exceptional service.
Formerly known as The Red Lion Hotel and dating back to the 16th century. The hotel has played host to numerous notable figures, including King Charles I and the First Duke of Marlborough. In 2021, the hotel underwent a complete renovation Their goal was to transform the historic property into a stylish boutique hotel while preserving its heritage. The interior is a testament to its historic roots, with exposed beams and original features seamlessly integrated into the modern design.
The hotel boasts 40 individually designed rooms, each offering a unique blend of contemporary comfort and historic charm. The rooms are decorated with a nod to the local rowing tradition and the natural beauty of the Chiltern Valley. The Heritage rooms feature antique fur-
niture from the hotel’s past, including a four poster bed slept in by King Charles 1.
I stayed in a riverside room the interior of which is inspired by a vintage yacht in marine colours and muted walls and a very unusual hanging lamp which was quite eye catching. The kingside bed was super comfortable with luxury linens and feather filled pillows complete with flat screen tv, tea and coffee facilities although no fridge.
The attention to detail in the décor, from the vintage-inspired furniture to the luxurious linens, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The marble bathroom was stunning with shower, soft fluffy towels, robes and slippers and the delicious smelling Aromatherapy Associates toiletries and the space was utilised perfectly.
The view from the windows of the River Thames was perfect and a joy to watch
the rowing team take to the river on a dark winter morning brightening only by twinkling Christmas lights reflecting in the faast flowing water. I can only imagine how lovely the view and smell would be in the summer through the wisteria clinging to the wall.
With a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay from a lovely large tranquil courtyard garden to the warm cosy vibrant Quarterdeck Bar. There is a river walk right outside and the prime location by the River Thames is perfect for cycling, and other outdoor activities which of course include rowing.
Dining in the hotel's restaurant is a culinary delight. Led by renowned chef Dominic Chapman, who offers a seasonal menu that showcases the best of British ingredients. From a hearty breakfast to a relaxed lunch and an exquisite dinner, every meal is a celebration of local seasonal flavours and produce. The Quarterdeck Bar, with its cosy ambiance and selection of craft beers and cocktails, is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The pretty Henley Deli sold delicious mince pies and other sweet treats. With 5 meeting and event spaces offering bespoke experiences and all dressed for the festival period.
Henley-on-Thames is a vibrant town with plenty to see and do. Notably the Henley Royal Regatta, or to explore the local shops and galleries, or take a boat trip on the River Thames. The surrounding Chiltern Hills offer beautiful walking and cycling trails, and vineyards making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. I cannot finish without mentioned the staff. They were all so cheery, friendly and welcoming. The manager, Andrew, was very visible, naturally chatting to everyone and very passionate about his hotel.
Offering a unique and memorable stay, combining historic charm with modern luxury. Whether you're visiting for a romantic getaway, a business trip, or a leisurely holiday, this boutique hotel provides an exceptional experience in the heart of Henley-on-Thames.

A BALANCING ACT:
EMBRACING BOTH TECH AND THE HUMAN TOUCH IN BUSINESS TRAVEL
BY MELANIE QUINN, DIRECTOR OF CORPORATE TRAVEL, TRAVEL COUNSELLORS FOR BUSINESS
Technology has transformed business travel over the past twenty years. From the rise of the online booking tool to the new frontier of AI, technology undoubtedly plays a key part in the continued evolution of travel management and business travel as a whole.
As disruptive technologies such as AI continue to enter the mainstream, businesses across a range of sectors are under increasing pressure to adapt. Some sectors are faring better than others, however. According to KPMG, the travel industry is the second fastest adopter of AI behind financial services.
In corporate travel, AI is driving significant change through machine learning algorithms enabling recommendations, predictive analytics optimising travel budgets and chatbots streamlining service interactions. This swift adoption offers both exciting opportunities and new challenges that companies must navigate to stay competitive in an evolving landscape.
GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT: PERSONALISED SERVICES
One area where these challenges are particularly evident is in the balance between technology and human interaction. Historically, technology in business travel has been leveraged to move the industry from manual processes to digital solutions. This shift has resulted in cost savings, time efficiencies, and improved oversight through data analysis. However, it has also led to a decline in the
personal, human interaction, which is a cornerstone of business travel.
The implementation of technology alone is not enough. Business travel is more than just booking travel; it’s about providing an experience tailored to each traveller’s unique preferences and anticipating their needs in ways that technology alone cannot. Travellers have varying priorities driven by personal values: some focus on sustainability, seeking low-impact travel options, while others emphasise work-life balance, requiring flexibility to manage family or personal commitments.
As such, for travel management companies to succeed, they need to adopt a care-focused approach that delivers truly personalised services that strikes a balance with tech-driven operations. This is key to enhancing travel programmes, increasing efficiency and improving the overall experience for both travellers and companies, all of which contribute to stronger client loyalty.
GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT: EFFECTIVE TECHNOLOGY TOOLS
With the rise of instant messaging, AI chatbots, and other technological solutions, selecting the right technology tools has become crucial for travel management companies. Some tools, while designed to make processes easier and safer, can actually lead to lower client satisfaction when used improperly. The solution lies in building strong relationships with clients to understand their unique needs, making the selection of appropriate tools much easier.

For many companies, utilising an online booking tool and embracing technology to drive cost savings and efficiency is an obvious choice. But when businesses apply this technology thoughtfully, paired with a customer care strategy, they can truly optimise their travel programmes and enhance the traveller experience.
At Travel Counsellors, we have a range of technologies to complement and

Moreover, our DaaS platform, myTC Insights has the ability to interpret data and provides comprehensive management reporting, highlighting opportunities for improvement and cost savings, further streamlining the travel management process.
Looking forward, as technology becomes ever more sophisticated, those travel management businesses that can marry the very best use of technology with the human touch will set themselves up for success. Technology isn’t about replacing human expertise; rather, it should complement and enhance it. This balanced approach fosters greater innovation while maintaining a strong human connection, ensuring that travellers feel valued and well cared for, which in turn strengthens loyalty and satisfaction.

ROTTERDAM V
For the business traveller heading to the Netherlands, two cities stand out: Amsterdam, the capital with its historic charm and global business pull, and Rotterdam, the more bustling, modern hub of commerce and innovation. Both are well-connected, both have a choice of places and spaces for meetings, and both have their own unique appeal.
But if you have just a few days on a Dutch business trip, which city is the better base? Can you explore both in a tight schedule? And how do they compare when it comes to accessibility, work-friendly environments, and the allimportant balance of business and leisure?
GETTING THERE: ACCESSIBILITY BY AIR AND RAIL
One of the biggest advantages of doing business in the Netherlands is how wellconnected it is. Whether you’re arriving from another European city or overseas, both Amsterdam and Rotterdam offer first-class accessibility.
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) is one of the busiest airports in Europe, with direct flights to almost every major global city. Schiphol’s seamless train connections make it easy to reach Amsterdam’s city centre in under 20 minutes. But it’s not just Amsterdam that benefits from Schiphol—Rotterdam is only 25 minutes away by train, meaning Schiphol effectively serves both cities.
Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) is smaller but efficient, offering connections to several key European cities. While it’s closer to Rotterdam’s business districts, most international travellers will find Schiphol to be the more convenient choice.
For those travelling by train, Amsterdam Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal are
both major hubs on Europe’s high-speed rail network. The Eurostar service connects both cities directly to London, while Thalys trains offer high-speed links to Paris and Brussels. With just 40 minutes between them by train, visiting both Amsterdam and Rotterdam on a single trip is entirely feasible.
ROTTERDAM: THE BUSINESS TRAVELLER’S CITY OF THE FUTURE
Rotterdam is often described as the Netherlands’ most forward-thinking city—a place where business meets innovation in a landscape of striking modern architecture. Unlike Amsterdam’s charming but sometimes cramped layout, Rotterdam is spacious, well-planned, and built for efficiency.
UNIQUE MEETING SPACES IN ROTTERDAM
For those looking to impress, Rotterdam offers a range of unique venues that go beyond the usual hotel meeting rooms.
THE FLOATING OFFICE: Located in Rijnhaven, this is the world’s largest floating office and a sustainability showcase. Perfect for meetings that emphasise innovation and climate-conscious business.
THE EUROMAST: Combining breathtaking views with business, the Euromast tower has
private meeting rooms where discussions can take place 100 metres above the city.
DE ROTTERDAM: This striking vertical city designed by architect Rem Koolhaas offers sleek business spaces with panoramic city views.
WHERE BUSINESS AND LEISURE OVERLAP
Rotterdam’s key advantage is its ability to blend business with a vibrant urban experience. The Markthal is an excellent example—ideal for a casual business lunch in one of its stylish restaurants, followed by a tour of its vast, art-covered ceiling.
For unwinding after meetings, the Kop van Zuid area offers sophisticated waterfront dining, while a short water taxi ride takes you to Hotel New York, a historic landmarkturned-hotel with a great terrace for drinks.
For business travellers with an interest in architecture and urban development, Rotterdam itself is a living exhibition. A quick visit to the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the world’s first publicly accessible art storage facility, is both a cultural experience and a lesson in cuttingedge design.
AMSTERDAM: TIMELESS CHARM WITH A GLOBAL EDGE
While Rotterdam is modern and businessfocused, Amsterdam balances its historic charm with a reputation as a global business hub. Home to major financial firms, tech giants, and creative industries, it has an undeniable international pull.
AMSTERDAM S A TALE OF TWO CITIES FOR BLEISURE
ICONIC BUSINESS MEETING SPACES IN AMSTERDAM
Amsterdam’s meeting venues offer a blend of sophistication and history, ensuring that business discussions take place in memorable surroundings.
THE DYLAN AMSTERDAM: A boutique hotel with luxurious meeting rooms in a 17th-century setting, ideal for those looking to impress clients.
FELIX MERITIS: This historic building, once a centre for the arts and sciences, now serves as an elegant business venue with modern facilities.
A’DAM TOWER: For those who enjoy a view, this creative hub across the river IJ has fantastic meeting spaces and even an observation deck for a post-meeting coffee with a skyline backdrop.
WHERE BUSINESS MEETS LEISURE IN AMSTERDAM
The beauty of Amsterdam is how effortlessly business and leisure blend together. The Museumplein area, home to the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum, is a great place to take clients for a cultured afternoon after a productive morning.
For an informal yet memorable meeting, a canal cruise offers the chance to discuss business while gliding past the city’s historic townhouses. Alternatively, a coffee at The Hoxton’s lobby café provides a relaxed but stylish setting for one-on-one meetings.
In the evenings, Amsterdam’s restaurant scene caters to all business occasions, from Michelin-starred dining at Restaurant Vinkeles to casual but high-quality fare at Café de Klepel, a favourite among wine lovers.
KEY DIFFERENCES: ROTTERDAM VS AMSTERDAM FOR BUSINESS
While both cities have their strengths, they offer very different experiences for business travellers.
Rotterdam is more modern and spacious, with a focus on architecture, innovation, and efficiency. It’s ideal for industries such as logistics, architecture, and sustainability.
Amsterdam is more historic and international, attracting finance, tech, and creative industries. It also has a livelier nightlife and a broader range of cultural attractions.
Public transport in both cities is excellent, but Rotterdam’s metro system makes it slightly easier to navigate quickly, while Amsterdam’s canals and compact layout mean many business hubs are within walking distance.
Accommodation tends to be more affordable in Rotterdam, while Amsterdam’s central hotels can be expensive, especially in peak seasons.
For those with two to three days in the Netherlands, it is entirely possible to
visit both cities. Given that they’re only 40 minutes apart by train, a business traveller could easily stay in one city and make a day trip to the other.
WHICH CITY WINS FOR BUSINESS TRAVEL?
So, should you base yourself in Amsterdam or Rotterdam? The answer depends on the nature of your business trip and what you want from your experience.
Choose Rotterdam if you value efficiency, modernity, and a unique urban experience. It’s a city that thrives on progress and is less crowded than Amsterdam, making it an easier place to move around.
Choose Amsterdam if you want a mix of business and culture, with an international network of professionals and an unmistakable charm. It offers a broader range of networking opportunities and after-hours entertainment.
For those with the time, the best solution is to experience both. A business trip to the Netherlands doesn’t have to be confined to one city—Rotterdam and Amsterdam complement each other, offering two very different but equally rewarding business environments. Whether you’re closing deals in a sleek tower in Rotterdam or discussing strategy in a canal-side café in Amsterdam, you’ll find the Netherlands to be an exceptional destination for the business traveller.

Having worked in prestigious roles—first at McKinsey for 15 years, then leading the online cycling retailer Wiggle— he wondered whether he could truly excel at running a low-cost gym business. “Do I look like a low-cost gyms kind of guy?” he quips, recalling his initial reaction with a smile.
Yet, in the space of just a few meetings with PureGym’s executives and shareholders, including founder Peter Roberts, something shifted in Cobbold’s perspective. He found himself quickly captivated by the potential of the venture and the spirit of innovation coursing through the company. That decision proved transformative: when Cobbold joined PureGym in January 2015, the chain operated 85 sites across the UK. Fast-forward nearly a decade, and PureGym has ballooned to 410 gyms nationwide, with an additional 253 sites dotted across the United States, Switzerland, and Denmark. Its workforce has grown from 280 to around 3,000, making it the UK’s largest gym group with a membership base of 2.5 million and revenues of £549 million in 2024.
This impressive expansion did not happen by chance. Meeting with Travelling for Business editor Richard Alvin, Cobbold reflects on how several core principles guided him and the team through PureGym’s most crucial phases. One is the willingness to innovate quickly—a modus operandi he attributes in part to the company’s private equity backing. “If you have just a handful of key investors with a shared vision, you can move much faster,” he explains.
As an example, he cites PureGym’s 2023 move to acquire a New York-based fitness operator, Blink Fitness, for $121 million. Because Blink had slipped into administration, the deal required quick action. “For us, we had a 10-minute conversation among our core investors to decide,” he recalls. “Then we executed the transaction. But if we had 50 public shareholders, we’d have needed to spend weeks, even months, seeking approval.”
COBBOLD
THE NO-FRILLS GYM CHIEF WHO REFUSED TO SLOW DOWN
HOW HUMPHREY COBBOLD BUILT PUREGYM INTO A UK FITNESS POWERHOUSE
When Humphrey Cobbold was first approached by his friend Tony Ball, the former chief executive of BSkyB, about taking the reins at the budget fitness chain PureGym, he admits to being uncertain. It was 2015, and Cobbold was at a crossroads in his career.
Yet, Cobbold’s journey toward running one of the UK’s biggest consumer brands was far from a straight line. Born in 1964, he was educated at Bromsgrove School, one of Britain’s oldest public schools, before earning a first in natural sciences from Cambridge University. After university, he joined McKinsey, the venerable consulting group, where he would spend 15 formative years. As he climbed the ranks, he honed his analytical toolkit and gained exposure to multiple sectors, from retail to telecommunications. That broad understanding of how diverse companies function, he says, later proved pivotal during his time with Wiggle and, ultimately, at PureGym.
Though Wiggle is now owned by the Frasers Group, Cobbold was at the helm from 2009 to 2013, brought in by private equity investor Livingbridge to scale the online cycling retailer and eventually sell it. In 2011, he oversaw the sale of Wiggle to Bridgepoint Group for £180 million.
Reflecting on that exit, he notes that private equity deals can be bittersweet. The new owners want to maximise value, and when the purchase price is high, it can be difficult to justify post-acquisition—especially if market conditions change. While Cobbold left with a sense of having accomplished his brief—“Sort this business out, grow it like crazy, and sell it”—he also endured what he describes as a “humbling experience” soon after. In 2013, he was removed from his role in a manner that left him feeling blindsided: “One day, I was told I couldn’t go back to my office to collect my things. Then I had to face my wife, my children, my parents, and my in-laws, and explain what happened.”
That episode, painful as it was, spurred him to prove, both to himself and to others, that he was still capable of leading a large-scale operation. As fate would have it, that next opportunity arrived in the form of PureGym. Although the concept
of no-frills fitness seemed alien at first, Cobbold was quickly won over by the potential for growth and by a founder, Peter Roberts, who had a deep passion for making affordable exercise accessible to all. “PureGym’s model aligns with my belief that fitness should not be elitist,” Cobbold says. “It should be there for everyone, from students on tight budgets to professionals who want a convenient, cost-effective way to work out.”
Over the next few years, Cobbold led PureGym through an aggressive expansion. This included the acquisition of Fitness World in 2019—a £350 million deal that gave PureGym footholds in Denmark, Poland, and Switzerland. But no one could have foreseen the storm that was to come: in early 2020, just weeks after the deal was finalised, Covid-19 restrictions swept across Europe, forcing the closure of leisure and hospitality venues, including gyms. “We were losing about £10 million a week,” he recalls. “We had £90 million in the bank, and that was it.” The
crisis tested not only the company’s financial resilience but also Cobbold’s ability to lead through adversity. Some landlords tried to take legal action to force rent payments, despite the government-mandated shutdowns. “I remember telling our lawyers, ‘Surely, they can’t do this?’ And they said, ‘Actually, they can.’”
Despite these unprecedented challenges, PureGym weathered the storm. The chain’s private owners—comprising American private equity firms Leonard Green and KKR—supported the business through that period of zero income. The intangible result was a renewed sense of camaraderie among team members. “When you’re in the trenches like that, you build bonds that last,” Cobbold says. Moreover, the crisis spurred surprising industry collaborations: “We worked with ukactive and even liaised with The Gym Group to help shape policies for the sector, ensuring that when gyms reopened, they could do so safely and sustainably.”
The Gym Group remains PureGym’s main rival in the UK. Founded by former England squash player John Treharne in 2008, The Gym Group operates 245 sites, with close to 906,000 members. It has been publicly listed since 2015, which Cobbold believes is both an advantage (they can tap capital markets more easily if the conditions are right) and a disadvantage (the bureaucracy of having many shareholders). In contrast, he believes PureGym’s private status allows it to make swift decisions that have propelled it ahead in both membership and geographic expansion. “I think I’m a bit more aggressive and ambitious,” Cobbold says matter-of-factly, though he admits healthy competition helps keep everyone on their toes.
In 2021, Cobbold found himself reflecting on his life beyond the boardroom. A personal scare in his family—his brother Tim’s serious brush with cancer— prompted him to reassess his priorities. “I wanted to live my sixties in a different way from how I lived my fifties,” he explains. He spoke with PureGym’s private equity owners, making it clear he wished to step back from day-to-day responsibilities. Over a two-year transition period, he
groomed Clive Chesser (formerly the boss of Punch Pubs & Co) to take over. This smooth baton handover reflects Cobbold’s belief in thorough succession planning: “You can’t just walk out. A role of this scale needs careful management to ensure continuity.”
Cobbold officially became chairman in late 2024, stepping away from the CEO role in January 2025. He has already noticed a shift in his personal life and well-being, an observation echoed by his three grown-up children. “They say I seem more relaxed,” he laughs, acknowledging the intensity of his years as chief executive. Now, he wants to spend more time in Mallorca, where he has a holiday home in Port d’Andratx, located roughly 30 minutes west of Palma. He halfjokes that he bought it as a “two-fingers up to Boris [Johnson] after Brexit,” but it also speaks to his love for Spanish culture—he is a keen Hispanophile who believes in balancing work with leisure.
Asked whether he will miss the adrenaline of running a company day in, day out, Cobbold admits he probably will. Yet he is relishing the freedom to dedicate hours to health and family. Sporting an Oura ring to track his sleep quality and continuing a diligent workout regimen at his local PureGym, he is also preparing for an ambitious cycling trip from Geneva to Nice—an event that requires him to shed a few pounds in time for the mountainous route. “I never felt overtly stressed as CEO, but maybe it was worse than I realised,” he says, “given the comments from my family.”
All the same, Cobbold remains closely involved as chairman, guiding strategy from a vantage that allows for greater perspective. If another non-executive role comes along, he might consider it, but for now he’s in no rush. “Life’s too short to let the job control your calendar,” he reflects. With PureGym’s membership numbers climbing, expansions abroad under way, and its finances stable after a tumultuous few years, it appears Cobbold is passing on a strong legacy—one that exemplifies resilience and ambition, even in the typically no-frills world of budget gyms. And as he transitions into what he calls “post-semi retirement dad,” he can look back on a career defined by refusing to be held back by uncertainty or the odd career setback.
All in all, Humphrey Cobbold’s trajectory— from Bromsgrove School to McKinsey, from Wiggle to PureGym—underscores that adaptability and resourcefulness remain invaluable in any sector, even one as seemingly straightforward as nofrills fitness. As for his future, Cobbold seems content to remain a guiding force behind PureGym’s continued expansion, mentoring rising talent, and quietly but confidently enjoying the personal freedom he has earned. If nothing else, he provides a persuasive example of how a seasoned leader can exit centre stage on his own terms—fit, forward-looking, and still hungry for the next challenge, whenever it may come.
ZERO-TAX WHERE TO MOVE TO IN 2025
Are you a digital nomad, crypto enthusiast, established entrepreneur, or simply someone with the means to explore new horizons and fed up the doom and gloom coming out of No.11 Downing Street? If so, 2025 might be the year you decide to fold up your life back home and seek out lower—or zero—tax destinations worldwide.
QATAR
While travel is undoubtedly a great way to expand your perspectives, it can also provide significant financial advantages if you pick the right location.
However, finding that “right location” can be tricky. Plenty of jurisdictions now compete fiercely for high-net-worth individuals, offering attractive residency programs with minimal or zero tax liability in exchange for economic investment. Still, not all zero-tax nations are created equal, and there are trade-offs to consider, including the overall quality of life, cultural fit, and ease of doing business. Let’s break down where you might relocate if you’re aiming to legally reduce, or entirely eliminate, your tax burden in 2025.
ZERO-TAX
OPTIONS AROUND THE WORLD
If your main goal is to reduce your tax bill to zero, there are still a handful of countries and territories globally that impose no taxes on personal income, capital gains, or wealth. They may not necessarily work for everyone on a permanent basis, but they can serve as an ideal short- or mediumterm option, or even as a secondary “back pocket” residency or citizenship.
MANY OF THESE JURISDICTIONS FALL INTO A FEW DISTINCT CATEGORIES:
Brunei and Monaco
Both levy no income tax, but each comes with significant lifestyle constraints. Brunei, for instance, has stringent rules and a more conservative culture, which may not suit
everyone. Monaco, on the other hand, is a glittering haven for the ultra-wealthy on the French Riviera. Although it’s small— merely 1.1 square kilometres—Monaco offers unparalleled proximity to European travel hubs. Yet, the costs of living and real estate are exceptionally high. A Golden Visa in Monaco can require at least a €500,000 investment. For those seeking more space and lower overheads, other zero-tax countries may be more appealing.
Gulf States
Countries such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar are well-known for zero personal income taxes. However, the UAE has introduced a 9% corporate tax for onshore businesses, which means prospective expats need to plan carefully. Free zones can still allow qualifying businesses to pay minimal or zero tax, so it remains an option.
Caribbean Islands and More
A cluster of island nations—ranging from the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the British Virgin Islands to St. Kitts and Nevis, the Cayman Islands, Vanuatu, and Antigua— maintain tax-free regimes. Frequently, acquiring residency or citizenship involves investing in real estate, starting a local business, or making a donation. The key consideration here is lifestyle: while beaches and sunshine may sound idyllic, long-term residency on a secluded island
can lead to cabin fever, and the lack of bigcity amenities might be an issue for some.
Although these zero-tax locales provide strong financial incentives, they’ve lost some of their lustre in recent years because many other countries now offer taxfriendlier regimes that don’t require hefty initial investments or total isolation.
ALTERNATIVE LOW-TAX DESTINATIONS
If you’re open to paying a modest amount of tax while retaining significant savings, various countries around the globe implement territorial tax systems or other structures that can effectively keep your rates very low—sometimes close to zero.
Under a territorial tax system, you’re only taxed on locally sourced income. If your earnings come from overseas investments, external consultancy work, or foreign rental properties, then you might not pay any tax in your new home country. This system, however, usually comes with conditions: you must demonstrate that the income is genuinely earned outside the jurisdiction where you reside.
One example frequently highlighted by Nomad Capitalist founder Andrew Henderson is Malaysia. While it is officially a territorial tax nation, it does tax remittances on money you bring into the country. Despite this, if you’re a high earner, you might only need to transfer a fraction of your overall wealth for living costs, which keeps your effective tax rate low. For instance, if you generate USD 2 million abroad but only remit USD 200,000, the tax you pay on that portion might average out to a small percentage of your total earnings— ultimately a beneficial arrangement.
Likewise, certain countries with broad reputations for high taxation, such as Switzerland, have specific exemptions for wealthy foreigners, like lump-sum taxation programs. These allow non-employed residents to pay based on living expenses rather than traditional income or capital gains taxes. If you prefer an alpine setting
and can manage the costs, this might be an appealing option.
GO WHERE YOU ARE TREATED BEST
The core ethos behind Nomad Capitalist’s philosophy is “go where you’re treated best.” This might mean mixing and matching jurisdictions for different aspects of life— business, investment, family, or leisure. A single “zero-tax” country might not fulfill all your needs, especially if you value cultural vibrancy or varied professional networks. That’s why some adopt a Trifecta Strategy, spending approximately one-third of the year in each of three different places.
For example, you could spend the winter in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where you only pay taxes on local-sourced income or money you remit. Come spring, relocate to Tbilisi, Georgia, known for relatively low taxes and easy residency. By autumn, head for Bogota, Colombia, to escape cooler weather elsewhere. By limiting each stay to around 90 days, you can often avoid becoming a tax resident in any of these places, thus legally minimising your global tax obligations.
Of course, implementing a three-country strategy requires careful planning—staggering flights, renting or buying properties, and keeping up to date on residency laws. You also need a clear understanding of each country’s “tax residency” thresholds. However, if executed correctly, this approach unlocks exceptional lifestyle benefits: think diverse cultures, cuisines, climates, and minimal red tape around taxes.
WRAPPING UP YOUR OPTIONS
While only a handful of nations officially have a zero-tax policy, creative approaches to taxation—such as territorial systems, lump-sum agreements, and multi-country residence planning—have broadened the range of viable options. The old-school concept of moving to a sun-soaked Caribbean isle or a Middle Eastern financial hub still works for some, but many other countries offer structures that let you keep your tax bill close to zero without sacrificing modern conveniences or big-city energy.
So if you’re pondering a global move in 2025, begin by clarifying your personal goals:
• Are you comfortable living on a remote island, or do you crave a vibrant social scene?
How important is robust infrastructure, including healthcare and transport?
Do you plan to start or run a local business, or will your income be purely from foreign investments?
Once you have outlined these priorities, the path to designing your ideal tax plan becomes much clearer. Whether you opt for full-fledged zero-tax nations like the UAE or St. Kitts and Nevis, or prefer a more flexible solution with minimal tax rates in places like Malaysia or Georgia, the world offers a host of possibilities.
As tax laws evolve, it’s vital to seek tailored professional advice for your specific circumstances. Nonetheless, remember: the ultimate objective is to align your tax strategy with your lifestyle and personal values. In an era when remote work and international investing are becoming ever more accessible, “going where you’re treated best” is no longer a mere slogan—it’s a practical reality that can dramatically improve both your financial prospects and your quality of life.
