Fall Forward into a Fit Life by Teri Hebert

You might not be thinking this is a great time of year to start a new fi tness routine. But I’d like to convince you that it is, in fact, an excellent time to fall FORWARD into a good health and fi tness habit as we move into the fall season.

1. Weather is your friend

The weather is cooler (although we know Texas “fall” weather takes a while to stick—as I’m writing this it’s 90-something degrees outside on this “brisk” September afternoon!). But generally speaking, the extreme heat that torments us during the summer subsides in the fall, making it more appealing to be outside for a walk or a run, or a boot camp. Perhaps a bike ride.

True, we must plan for rain, as well. But whether your indoors or outdoors, take advantage of lower temps and get out to move around!

2. Be Flexible

Speaking of weather, you might have moved indoors for the hot summer and hit the dreaded treadmill to get your miles in. But look!

You can now venture outdoors! There’s still enough daylight in the morning or evening to get in a run before or after work. And if it rains, try some cross-training that you can do inside (weights, spin class, swim some laps, or try some yoga). Strength and fl exibility enhances any regular program. Give it a try!

3. Food is Fuel

You’ve probably heard that before, and it’s true. What you put in your body should be considered fuel to get you through your day.

So, go easy on the Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin muffi ns, and pumpkin spice, well, EVERYTHING. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great time of year when the pumpkin spice reappears. But everything in moderation. Do you need pumpkin spice every day? Twice a day?

You might THINK you do. But you don’t. No. Put it down. Eat a vegetable, drink plenty of water, and hold the pumpkin spice for a nice treat after a hard week of work and kids and schedules and whatnot.

4. Get the Family Moving

Your kids might be involved in 10 different sports this time of year, so this one might take care of itself. If not? Everyone can still get moving! Play in the park. It’s perfect park weather! Walk the dog and explore the neighborhood. Rake the leaves then jump in them.

Walk to our neighborhood restaurants instead of driving.

Fall is a great time to get moving and create a healthy habit with your food choices and exercise. Remember, the holiday season is coming soon! You’ll want to eat all the things . . . so plan now to accommodate the yummy holiday treats by starting healthier habits sooner rather than later!
