The Guadalupe River, one of the top trout streams in the nation, is stocked annually by the Guadalupe River Chapter of Trout Unlimited (www.GRTU.org). The popular Horseshoe tube ride is a part of the Guadalupe River that loops back in the shape of a horseshoe, crossing under FM 306 twice. With longer rides, the tube trip takes you far away from your beginning point, hence the handy shuttle services that are offered by outfitters. But the Horseshoe is a short ride that brings you back just about where you started. If you take out at the bridge, it’s about a five minute walk back to start over. The duration of a float is determined by the river levels (and therefore speed) that change daily. Normal flow from the reservoir is 350 cfs and over 1199 cfs is considered too dangerous for tubing. The short Horseshoe trip is easy to gauge; it normally takes about an hour and a half to two hours depending on the float route you chose. As a severe comparison, when water breached the spillway for the first time in dam history during the flood of 2002, the rate of flow was 67,000 cfs! (Visit www.CanyonGorge.com for details and photos of the flood.) The Horseshoe trip is relatively short – it’s not an all day trip. So get out and float it again. “Toobing the loop” includes several sections of rapids at various speeds as well as a portion called the “Lazy Leg.” Floating the Horseshoe is a social event; tubers float in close proximity and meet other groups, making friends as they travel together. Everyone has to toob the loop at least once – then they can’t help but return to get back in. Evidence of its popularity is most apparent on holidays. Glance down the river when you cross it on FM 306. Sometimes you seem to see more tubers than surface water. It’s an experience. Don’t miss it. (Source: www.RiverSportsTubes.com)

LURE OF THE SHORE

by Mark Anawaty

Like some wrong-headed native Texans, I looked askance at fly fisherman as the tweed and knickers set until someone pointed out to me that fly fishermen had been roaming the world hooking everything from marlin to angry salmon for many decades prior to my entry on this orbiting sphere. Still even as recent as the 80s, it wasn’t big in Texas. Whew,

has that ever changed! Take an early morning pause on any Guadalupe River crossing and you’ll spot dozens of fly fishermen and women plying their best dressed flies, muttering various fish incantations under their breath hoping to bring to hand one of the ephemeral rainbow or brown trout stocked each year by the State of Texas and the Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited chapter. The Guadalupe is touted as the southernmost tailwater trout fishery in America. Because the dam was designed to let water flow from the bottom of the dam, the temperature for 10-12 miles downstream is generally constant enough to sustain a viable stocking program. Each year holdover trout, that is trout that have survived from year to year, are caught weighing north of five pounds. More than one guide from the mountain states has been spotted on our Guadalupe hoping to land one of these Texas-sized rainbows. With the internet, one has only to search for “Fly fishing the Guadalupe River to learn everything necessary for fishing this beautiful river safely and successfully. Tackle accessible to everyone’s budget is now available and local guides and instructors bring our usual Texas exuberance and enthusiasm to a sport once viewed as elitist.

Mark Anawaty is a Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor and enjoys both salt and fresh water flyfishing. On occasion he has been known to throw a perfect loop. For more information, contact Mark via email at MAnawaty@gmail.com.

FISH’N TIPS by Travis Smith Canyon Lake holds a variety of game fish and non-game fish. Game fish are species that are regulated by the State with length and bag limits. The game fish found in Canyon Lake are largemouth bass, white bass, striped bass, and smallmouth bass, along with three species of catfish: blue catfish, yellow catfish and channel catfish. The non-game fish are carp and the bait fish such as shad and perch. For bass, the methods most commonly used are Texas Rigged seven-inch worms and stick baits with a watermelon seed or red shad color pattern. If you prefer the “cast and retrieve” method, crankbaits such as Rat-L-Traps, Norman, Bandit and Rapala baits that run at 6 to12 feet deep in a shad or bleeding shad pattern work very well. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with live minnows. Canyon Lake lacks “structure” (ie, piers that are attached to the bottom), so look for tree groves and underwater ledges as these provide cover for the fish and they will likely stage in these areas.

A small portion of WORD’s FUNFISH-ers

18802 FM 306 • Canyon Lake

When fishing for the ever elusive catfish, punch baits and cheese baits are recommended for blue and channel catfish while the yellow (flathead) catfish prefer live bait. Look for these fish in creek channels in the back of coves and along standing timber. Canyon Lake is a very fun lake to fish. Good luck, and remember safety is your number one priority. Please wear your life jacket!

River Road in Comal County is one of the genuine gems of Texas. Breathtakingly beautiful water flows through cliffs and hills, lending a sense of of calm to those driving, camping, and floating throughout the area. The flows can alternate from sedate to challenging on a weekly basis, the fishing is excellent, and the friendly atmosphere can’t be beat.

Many businesses line River Road offering you scenic places to camp, houses or cabins to rent, rafts, canoes, kayaks, or tubes for floating the river, guided fishing trips, and much more. In the summer, crowds flock to the area, but there are always stretches of river to choose from that are quiet and stretches that are full of people having a great time. Business owners excel at setting a trip or stay to match your mood, and can set your float duration and experience accordingly.

One of the best aspects of visiting the Guadalupe River is its affordability as a vacation for friends or family. Rather than paying city hotel prices and theme park entrance fees, people can come to a place where nature makes your vacation, and relaxation comes free. ... maintaining the beauty for you by Mike Dussere The Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) is a special district created by the Texas Legislature in 1987. WORD’s purpose is to collect tax from tourism and water recreation related activities and use those monies for law enforcement, cleanup, and other things within the district and on the waterways. The WORD district includes 30 miles of Guadalupe River, Canyon Lake, and the surrounding areas.

WORD strives to keep the area pristine in many ways. In addition to the regularly scheduled cleanups and officers on duty, WORD takes on special projects as needed. Last year, a free, 24-hour public access fishing pier was added to the north side of the lake at Potter’s Creek to compliment the existing one at Crane’s Mill on the south side. Two boat ramps have been reworked and/or extended this year to facilitate easy lake access. When the lake was at record low levels last year, the shoreline was cleaned of debris that had not been seen since the lake was built in 1964; over 18 tons of debris were collected and disposed of in this effort.

WORD launched a Texas Paddling Trail on the upper Guadalupe River (above Canyon Lake) and it has been a great success, with folks from all over bringing their kayaks and canoes to enjoy the scenic river stretches. Each year, WORD runs a kid fishing event on the lower river called FUNFISH. The event is free to all children and poles, bait, hot dogs, t-shirts, and drinks are provided free to participants. Excellent trophies are given for the most fish caught and largest fish in each age group.

Camping at Canyon Lake

There are eight public parks around Canyon Lake managed by the US Army Corp of Engineers (COE) that are available for camping, picnicking, swimming, scuba diving, boating, hiking and more. With more than a million visitors per year, some of the parks stay full year round. Early reservations are recommended. Canyon Lake has become a favorite spot for tent camping to the RV-style luxury camping. Potter’s Creek Park is the only COE park to offer RV sites currently; improvements at Crane’s Mill Park should add an additional 50 of 65 new sites for RVs by the end of the year. Earlier is possible. There are four blinking lights along FM 306 indicating access to Corp parks. There are two swim beaches; one is at Canyon Park on the north side accessible from the Hancock area while Comal Park is on the south side near the community of Startzville. There is a charge for public boat ramps at some locations. Fishing is permitted from the shoreline, but a state fishing license is required. No firearms are allowed in the parks.

18

This guide is to assist visitors in locating parks with public access. If the parks are full, there are private campgrounds available with and without amenities, RV parks, cabins, cottages, B&B’s and lodges speckled throughout the lake area. (Refer to the lodging list on page 31 and the adjacent map indicating their location.) It is best to plan ahead, particularly during peak holiday times. Respect that private property is private; please do not trespass or cut through.

Potter’s Creek Park Potter’s Creek Park is a beautiful park located on the northwest side of Canyon Lake off Potter’s Creek Road at the junction of Hwy 484 (Fischer Road). It has two boat ramps, a new floating fishing pier donated by WORD, and a swim beach for campers. It is open year round. For Potter’s Creek reservations, call 1-877-444-6777.

Canyon Park Canyon Park, on the northside of the lake near Hancock, is open April 1st through September 30th, 7am-10pm. It has a boat ramp, 150 campsites, two overnight shelters and one day use shelter.

Canyon Beach Park Canyon Beach Park is located on the north shore of the lake – about one mile on the left of Canyon Park Road. Canyon Swim Beach is on the left before entering Canyon Park.

With rolling terrain, an abundance of mature trees, and fantastic weather, the area lends itself very well to beautiful golf courses. Between San Antonio, the Hill Country, and Austin there are over 80 outstanding golf courses. In other areas of the country the same caliber of golf courses are charging over $150; you can play almost all of the courses in the Hill Country for less than $75. Beyond the wonderful layouts and course conditions, the best thing about playing golf in the Hill Country is the friendly, Texas atmosphere. you don’t have to worry about the stuffy attitudes that are sometimes associated with golf. This makes for a very inviting environment if you’re thinking about taking up the game; it also creates a fun and relaxing experience for even the most avid golfer.

Canyon Lake Communities of Yesteryear

The earlier communities in the Canyon Lake Region had their beginnings soon after new Braunfels was settled by the Germans in 1845. Of course, the pioneers settled mostly on the fertile land suitable for farming along the Guadalupe River basin in order to raise crops and have access to water.

Sattler

Sattler was one of the early communities; however, the name evolved in time. In 1849, New Braunfels merchants, Ferguson and Hessler, established a farm in the area, and named it Marienthal (Marie’s Valley). The name lingered for many years. In 1909, sixty years later, the fraternal organization of the Sons of Hermann was named Marienthal Lodge in the community. A singing club was organized in 1873, named Walhalla Singing Club. The club existed for 32 years with many celebrations of song, dance and school festivals at their hall. The settlement became known as Walhalla to many people. The general area along the Guadalupe River from FM 306 to the third crossing and westward was also known as Mountain Valley or Gebirgsthal, a community in the valley among the mountains. Evidence of this title is still around – Mountain Valley Middle School, Mountain Valley Cemetery and Mountain Valley Pharmacy. The name Hidden Valley was given to the valley currently below the dam because, in the earlier years, there was only one entrance to the valley. The road from Sattler Road (FM 2673) to the valley was extended onto FM 306 when the dam was constructed and is now named South Access Road. Hidden Valley Park near the CRRC Recreation Center serves as a reminder of this early area. The entire combined community received its name from William Sattler, a contractor for the US Mail service, who had a post office off FM 306 near the river crossings. After he passed away, the post office was moved to the local store which was more centrally located in the community. This business and social center consisted of the store/saloon, Walhalla dance hall, bowling lanes, post office, and cotton gin. Currently, VFW Post #8573 is located where the WeilNowotny-Guenther store was and the Comal County JP Office is located where the bowling lanes used to be. The Hitching Post Enterprises is at the dance hall site. After a while the entire community was known as Sattler since all of the mail was addressed to this name and everybody picked up their mail at this location. All that remains of the original community

“History of Sattler and Mountain Valley School, Comal County, Texas 1846 - 1964” by Alton J. Rahe

at the site are the two oak trees on each side of the road and the stand for the water tank that supplied the cotton gin.

Hancock

Canyon Dam was constructed in the early 1960s and most of the Hancock Valley Community was submerged. This valley was named after John Hancock, US Judge and politician who was granted land on the north bank of the Guadalupe River in 1851. This community once consisted of a general store, dance hall, cotton gin, and rodeo grounds for the business/social activities of the local ranchers and farmers. The Sorrell Creek School, site underwater, was the formal educational center of the community. The Hancock Mini-Mart on FM 306 serves as a reminder of the community who once considered that area home.

Cranes Mill

Canyon Lake also consumed most of the Cranes Mill Community. The community was named after JB Crain, who built a mill at the Gum Spring crossing on the Guadalupe River in the early 1850s. The spelling became Crane when the post office was reopened in 1873 by Rev. August Engel. The Cranes Mill name is still used by a cemetery, park, church and marina to serve as a reminder of the beloved earlier community.

Startzville

Startzville had its start in 1940 when Bruno and Viola Elbel operated a cedar yard and a small store on a 12-acre site where the Smithson Valley, Sattler and Cranes Mill roads intersected. After the little store burned down in 1942, Frank Meckel built the rock structure which we can still see today. The separate ice house still stands out front. In 1946, Curt and Alice Startz bought the grocery store, ice house and two gas pumps, which they had leased since 1944. The name Startzville was first used in 1950 by an artist friend, Dr. EJ Duffin, when he painted a picture of the store. In 1963, James and Lorine Startz, their son, added a café to the store. In time, the grocery store was closed while the café continued. Curt and Alice’s great-granddaughter, Monica Startz Wetz, currently operates the Startz Café.

Alton J. Rahe was born in 1932 in the “Teacherage” on River Road in Sattler where the historical marker is now. The information on Sattler was taken from “History of Sattler and Mountain Valley School, Comal County, Texas, 1999” by Mr. Rahe, Walsworth Publishing Co. Road trips, rallies and rides

UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP

No matter your tastes, there is something for everyone in and around Canyon Lake. You can enjoy live music that ranges from the symphony to Willie Nelson to classic western tunes like “Cool Water.” With Market Days, quaint shops and galleries to outlet malls, shoppers will be pleased. Enjoy the views while you cruise. Riding the Texas Hill Country is a favorite road trip for bikers statewide and it doesn’t matter where you’re going. As bikers will say, “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey that counts.” The views are stunning, whether you’re riding, driving, or cycling. Venture down side roads when there’s no schedule to follow. Explore. According to Gruene Harley-Davidson, a favorite ride of the Gruene Chapter of Harley Owner’s Group (HOG) is down Hwy 46 from New Braunfels to Boerne, “it’s open with great scenery and there’s never much traffic. It’s the perfect road to just ride. Other great rides are FM 306 to Hwy 281” and Ranch Road 32 across the backbone. FM 306 east will take you to Gruene and New Braunfels. Take Hwy 46 to Spring Branch, head north on Hwy 281 to Blanco. Follow CR 165 from the Blanco Courthouse to Hwy 2325 for a scenic trip into Wimberley and San Marcos. Return to the lake by RR 32 for a splendid view; the winding ridge known as Devil’s Backbone is one of Texas’ best. Riley’s on the Backbone will tell you the best rides from there. The backbone is a short trip to or from FM 3424 and FM 306. Enjoy the full bar and A/C at Lucky’s; they’re biker friendly too. Rallies are often planned in the spring or fall when the wind is cool and the air is crisp. Check our calendar for rides and visit www. grueneharley.com or www.gruenehog.com for current updates.

Historic Gruene Hall ~ A Texas music institution In the 1840s, a large influx of German immigrants arrived in the Texas Hill Country; Ernst and Antoinette Gruene settled in New Braunfels. In 1878 their son, Hd, opened Gruene Hall as the town’s central gathering place; the town thrived for a while. In 1929, many businesses failed during the Great depression, but Gruene Hall never closed. Gruene was a virtual ghost town until 1975 when Pat Molak and friend, Mary Jane nalley, purchased the old gristmill boiler room, now renovated it into the celebrated Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar – and the Hall came with it. Pat and Mary Jane set out to preserve the authentic, turn-of-the-century feel of Gruene, acquiring several original buildings needing restoration. Their efforts produced a charming shopping district, drawing nearly 1 million visitors a year

worldwide – an experience that is totally Texas. Music lovers must make a stop at Gruene Hall for a true Texas experience. Acclaimed as “Texas’ oldest continuously operating dance hall,” the 6,000 square foot, open-air dance hall became a magnet for many of Texas’ big names who started there as up-andcoming performers – George Strait, Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum and on... They still return. The Hall is filled to capacity regularly. Gruene Hall features live music everyday year round, including afternoon shows on weekends too. Monday through Thursday evenings are usually free with Fridays and Saturdays nights generally ticketed shows. It offers excellent music and is also kid friendly. Visit Gruene on the first full weekend of the month from 10am to 5pm for Old Gruene Market Day. Or call ahead at Rockin R Tubes & Raft Rentals on the Guadalupe in Gruene to rent a tube or raft. At least drive down the hill to see the whitewater fun from the bridge. Call 830-629-5077 or visit www.gruenehall.com for information.

F ree time and te x as wines Photo by Dry Comal Creek Winery

An affordable day trip with class It surprises many consumers to learn that vineyards were planted in Texas hundreds of years before California – cultivated by Spanish missionaries in the 1600s. Although most vineyards died out during Prohibition, the ideal growing conditions of the Texas terrain sparked new interest in the 1970s.

Other wineries close by are Dry Comal Creek and Driftwood Estate Winery. Dry Comal Creek Vineyards & Winery is located west of New Braunfels off Hwy 46. Driftwood Estate Winery is located on a scenic hilltop between Dripping Springs and Wimberley. Traveling the Hill Country visiting vineyards is an economical way to spend a day and enjoy true Texas hospitality just a short drive away.

Award-winning Texas wineries are now scattered throughout Texas and the Hill Country and welcome visitors for tastings, sampling, and sipping. Check individual websites for available hours or call for an appointment. You can also plan your trip during one of the Texas Wine Trail events. Five times during the year, 24 wineries schedule tours, demonstrations, and seminars on wine and food pairings along with artists, musicians and entertainers. (Visit www. TexasWineTrail.com for dates and ticket information.)

Scenic River Properties of it all. Strategically located less than an hour from the capital city of Austin and a half hour from San Antonio, Canyon Lake is convenient to many area attractions, shopping, colleges and universities, state-of-the-art medical care, amusement and recreation destinations, cultural centers, arts and music venues and locally-owned businesses. It’s easy to see why Comal County is one of the fastest growing counties in Texas.

Come Vacation in the Texas Hill Country on the Guadalupe River or Canyon Lake ...or buy and stay awhile ...

Canyon Lake is planning for the future so that no critical services lapse with the continuing growth. The community can boast of three beautiful new schools in the last three years – Rebecca Creek Elementary, Startzville Elementary, and Canyon Lake High, plus new modern fire stations with more emergency personnel and the latest in new equipment. Expanding the old Tye Preston Memorial Library building again was no longer feasible; a new library – almost four times the previous size – has broken ground. The community is growing with preparation and style.

We offer 23 FULLY FURNISHED homes for vacation rentals.

Computer workshops for adults, beginner through advanced, are also offered. At the start of 2010, TPML was still operating in its original location at 1321 FM 2673 in a 30-year-old building that had been expanded twice to its current size of 5,600 square feet. Fire protection in Canyon Lake is provided by Emergency Services Districts (ESDs), political subdivisions of the State of Texas. Like a school district, it’s not part of the county government although ESDs work closely with County Commissioners. ESD#2 provides Emergency Medical Services while ESD#3 assures fire protection. ESD#2, founded in 1992, with a 2-cent rate had not had any tax rate increases in its 17 years of existence. A tax levy recently approved by voters will ensure that trained, professional firefighters and paramedics with state-of-the-art equipment will arrive to an emergency within minutes. Due to the rapidly growing population, a new and larger firehouse was needed to accommodate increased manpower as well as space for new equipment. The fire station was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The new 14,410 square foot station is part of ESD#3’s five-year plan to reduce response time as effectively as possible.

The fire station is located at 1074 Scissortail in Canyon City off FM 306, across from La Casa del Lago restaurant. For more information, visit www.CanyonLakeFire-EMS.org or call 830-907-2922.

Canyon Lake Hawks are Soaring! With rapid growth, school districts must adapt as did Comal ISD. The new Canyon Lake High School opened three years ago; they will have their first graduating class in 2010. Building school pride from scratch was a challenge for the new teaching staff – a challenge they obviously met head on with great success. The teams have excelled this year beyond all expectations for a new school. Competing in one of the toughest 3A Divisions in the State, against championship schools like Liberty Hill, Wimberley, Llano..., the Hawks sent teams to the State playoffs in football, volleyball, girls’ basketball, girls’ soccer, and the band! Compliments to the teams, the staff, and the parents; this had to be a joint effort of everyone involved. Kudos...

The Silver Days ... retirement at Canyon Lake Canyon Lake is a growing retirement community. Retirees enjoy a healthy lifestyle and active life around the lake, many senior activities, and a safe environment away from city troubles. Living life in the slower lane is conducive to an easy transition into retirement as it allows the time to volunteer on some level. Because the Canyon Lake Community has over 50 community organizations, many participate actively early on, long before retirement.

The Freedom Walk takes place every year on 9/11 with a walk across the dam, also a favorite stroll for those in search of a healthier lifestyle.

Exercise classes, like Silver Sneakers, are geared toward seniors. They are held daily at the Rec Center along with numerous other activities. Classes are large but more are welcome. Because of the lake’s proximity to Randolph Air Force Base and Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, a large group of military retirees have made Canyon Lake their home. These retirees enjoy convenient PX shopping, Brooke Army Medical Center facilities close by, two active VFW organizations, as well as recreational facilities that the bases maintain at the lake. Winter Texans, retirees who visit the Hill Country to escape the harsh winters up north, stay here to enjoy the mild winters, reasonable prices, and discounts on housing offered in Canyon Lake in the off season months. Many who return annually now know one another as well as local residents. Several hundred are welcomed each February at the Winter Texan Reception, hosted by the Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Caring full time ... lending a helping hand There are two organizations that operate full time who help seniors specifically and the community in general in the Canyon Lake area: The Community Resource & Recreation Center, also known as CRRC, and Habitat for Safe Seniors. The many other valuable community organizations are parttime in nature, even if fulltime at heart.

Angels for Elders

CRRC offers programs that include a food pantry, financial assistance for families in need, a free durable medical equipment lend program, a Meals on Wheels program from their office location in Sattler. CRRC partners with local churches who assist the food pantry with funding as well as consistent volunteers.

CRRC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, a Comal County United Way Agency. Call 830-964-2324 or visit www.CRRCofCanyonLake.org for information. Habitat for Safe Seniors provides critically needed services, nutrition, home safety repairs, environmental improvement, and companionship to senior citizens in the Canyon Lake and Comal County area, including food delivery to ensure that no Senior goes without necessary nutrition. From the heart of Canyon Lake Canyon Lake is a vibrant community with plenty to keep you busy. The spring season starts out strong in April with events spread out over the year. There are Market Days, BBQ cook-offs, chili cookoffs, veterans events, dances and live music. Enjoy art shows, parades, dinosaur tracks and much more. The year culminates with the magical North Pole at Santa’s Village, a child’s true delight, then dances bring in the New Year. With over 50 nonprofit organizations serving a variety of local needs, many of the events raise money for community programs. Stop by to buy a plate or dance in and let “Canyon Lake Friendly” greet you with smiles. Visitors are always welcome. The Chamber’s 12th Annual BBQ Cook-Off is one not to miss. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 24th at Mountain Breeze Campground – about five miles down River Road from FM 2673. It is family-style fun with food provided by the best BBQ cooks around. Over 50 cooking teams compete. Heaps of cool auction items are available for silent bidding with the live auction lead by professional Auctioneer Link Fuller. It takes almost a hundred hard working volunteers to pull it off each year – and they love every minute of it. Fundraisers are a way of life in Canyon Lake – stop by one and see why. It comes from the heart.
