Police say the dead man was shot by another driver following a collision on 128th Street. SURREY – The city COLLEY notched up another murder Ted Staff Reporter Wednesday night when a 30-year-old Surrey resident was shot to death after being involved in a minor traffic accident. Police say the incident occurred just after 11 p.m. in the 6800-block of 128th Street when the South Asian driver of a white Lexus sedan was gunned down as he walked toward a white SUV that had just collided with him. The dead man’s wife was in the Lexus when the shooting occurred. She was unharmed. “It’s just the craziest thing,” said IHIT’s Cpl. Dale Carr. “Allegedly, they’re just driving along when this SUV comes along and hits them. The Lexus driver approaches the SUV to confront the guy then, pow! He gets shot.” The man, whose name had not been released when the Now went to press, stag-
gered into the front yard of a nearby house and collapsed. He died in hospital. “We found some stray rounds that went into the home, so we’re comparing them,” Carr said. “There were people in the house at the time, but nobody in the house was hurt.”

Carr said investigators don’t know if the shooting was an extreme case of road rage provoked by the collision. “It’s just purely speculation,” he said of
reports this was a road rage incident. “We’re alive to the fact there was this MVA (motor vehicle accident), but we don’t know if it was road rage.” Carr said there was no indication at that point in the investigation that the victim was known to police, or if the shooting could be connected to gangs or drugs. “It doesn’t appear so at this point, but we’re still working on it. We’ll be checking background and all that, but there are other things we have to attend to first, so we’re doing that now.” The SUV sped away south and was last seen in the vicinity of 128th Street and 64th Avenue. The suspect is only described as a South Asian male driving a white Ford Explorer-type SUV thought to be about 10 years old. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com
❚DELTA/Two people hurt after being stabbed in two separate incidents
Proof that drugs, alcohol, motorbikes and knives don’t mix DELTA – A bike ride in Carolyn COOKE the park turned nasty for a Staff Reporter couple of men. Police say a 39-year-old man and a recent acquaintance, a 25-year-old man, went for a motorbike ride in Watershed Park near Briarwood Crescent Wednesday after consuming both alcohol and drugs. Once at the park, police say they got into a fight, where the older man was stabbed several times in his back and neck. The younger man took several hits to the head.
Both men were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital for treatment. The man with the stab wounds was kept overnight while the younger man was released. He was taken to the police headquarters where he was interviewed and then arrested for assault with a weapon. The hospitalized man is listed as in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. A second stabbing incident happened in the 6300-block of Scott Road. There, a 17-year-old female went into a convenience store and stabbed a customer at the
counter in the back. Police say there was no provocation for the attack. The teen then fled the store but police arrived with a K9 team and she was found nearby. The accused, who was arrested, has no history of violent behaviour, although she may be suffering from mental health issues. The man who was attacked suffered a small puncture wound in the back that did not require medical attention. ccooke@thenownewspaper.com
SURREY – The RCMP will be marking its 60th anniversary in Surrey with a ceremony and red serge parade. Sunday is the anniversary of when the Mounties took over municipal policing duties in Surrey. The city’s detachment started out with 18 officers, stationed in Cloverdale in the historic 1912 City Hall building. The RCMP have a longer history with Cloverdale though, with one member assigned there in 1936 to handle federal duties for the border. In 1950 a plebiscite was held, with the result being a decision to switch municipal policing duties to the RCMP. In 1952 the detachment moved to an old laundromat on the southwest corner of 177B Street and 60th Avenue. In 1963 the RCMP moved again, this time to an annex of the old city hall building, to what later became the Surrey Archives. That building was torn down in 1971, with the officers working from trailers at the current museum site while its new home – current main detachment across from the new city hall – was built. The festivities, set for 2 p.m. at the Surrey Museum Square, will feature an hour-long parade of members decked out in their in red serge.
Fraser’s killer to be sentenced Sept. 2 SURREY – Gary Donald Johnston will have to wait until Sept. 2 to be sentenced for the second-degree murder of Vic Fraser in Bridgeview in 1998. Johnston, 53, was found guilty on April 15. He faces an automatic life sentence but the hearing in September will establish when he might be eligible for parole. – The Now
