Workers: Suspended with pay Unit (604-278-1212) if they have concerns regarding how their child was cared for while in the daycare. Hesmert admits he was shocked to learn Rafter, a long-time employee and manager, had been accused of assault. “The whole thing was disappointing and a shock that there’s charges laid, because the centre has had an excellent track record coming on 12 years,” Hesmert said.” The child care centre will remain open, as both the board of directors and Vancouver Coastal Health — the licensing authority — are satisfied there is no current risk to children at the daycare. Hesmert said the daycare had been overstaffed before the three employees were suspended, so there are no concerns about understaffing “We have ample staff and we have put in an interim director . . . until we plan our next move,” Hesmert added. One parent whose child attends the daycare said the allegations are troubling. “Honestly, I am shocked,” Kam Esmaeili

said Thursday as he showed up to pick up his fiveyear-old daughter, who has attended the daycare for two years. “How can I trust the persons there?” He said parents had been given no information about the charges, although he said there had been rumours of something going on at the daycare centre. Asked if he planned to continue sending his daughter to the daycare centre, Esmaeili said he has little choice, because both he and his wife work and lineups for child care are long. “We have to — there’s no choice,” he said. Hesmert said the board is calling parents to apprise them of the situation, and planned to call a special meeting with parents today (Friday). The daycare is licensed by the Vancouver Health Authority, which requires daycare workers to be properly trained and to pass criminal record checks.

Continued from page 1 unable to say, however, charges have been brought as a result of it, so there must have been some intent.” All three caregivers are due in court July 6 to answer the charges. Meanwhile, they are banned from attending the Bethany Child Care Centre. “The individuals that are currently named, they are suspended with pay,” said Bernie Hesmert, the president of the Bethany Child Care Centre’s board of directors, which is a distinct entity from the Bethany Baptist Church. “These are allegations. We can’t presume anything at this point in time.” Turley said the investigation is ongoing and that police want to hear from any parents who suspect their child may have been deliberately hurt at the daycare. “If there are other...children that received the same type of treatment then by all means give us a call so we can investigate that,” she said.
