Find help for heritage home renovation BY DEBRA NELSON CONTRIBUTOR editorial@royalcityrecord.com

f last week’s wonderful Heritage Home Tour has inspired you to tackle your own restoration, make the library your first stop. Begin with the library’s heritage website, www. nwheritage.org. Here you’ll find a wealth of information on New Westminster homes,
including those featured on previous tours. You can research your own home, find out if it’s on the heritage inventory or has an official heritage designation and look to see if there are historical photographs of the interior or exterior of your house. The section on Conserving and Restoring Your Historical House is a guide to some of the many books in the library.
If you’re wondering about the style of your older home, take a look at British Columbia Houses, a basic guide to heritage house styles in B.C., or A Guide to Canadian Architectural Styles. There are also books on specific styles such as bungalow, Arts and Crafts, Victorian and Edwardian. You can also research how the interior of your house might have looked
when it was built. Period Details, by Judith Miller, and Period Decorating, by Mary Gilliatt, look at different styles up to Art Deco and discuss correct architectural details such as doors, ceilings, windows, lighting, paint colours and furniture. Lighting for Historic Houses, by Roger Moss, demonstrates how to create a realistic period
look when selecting light sources for historic homes. When you’re planning the exterior finishing of your house, find inspiration in Painted Ladies, Daughters of Painted Ladies and How to Create Your Own Painted Lady. These wonderful collections of photographs show how complementary colours can be used to really bring out the details on Victorian houses.
Of course before all the finishing details, the hardest part is making sure the structure is sound. Renovating Old Houses, by George Nash, has practical information from fixing foundations to plumbing to chimney repair. Then you can use the books on photography and scrapbooking to help you document and preserve the memories of your hard work.
