North Shore Hospice opening

North Shore Hospice campaign chairwoman Joanne Houssian and Horizon Engineering president Karen Savage celebrate the success of the opening. The North Shore’s first freestanding hospice was opened Oct. 23 with a private reception for major campaign contributors and partners, followed by a community celebration. Those in attendance toured the 15,000 square foot facility that sits on property donated by Vancouver Coastal Health. The hospice is the result of $8.5 million raised in the community by Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, Family Services of the North Shore and Lions Gate Hospice Society. An additional $1.7 million yearly pledge from the Ministry of Health Services will cover ongoing operating costs. The hospice, located at 319 East 14th St., in North Vancouver, is comprised of 15 private rooms, family areas, a healing garden and sacred space, and is heated and powered by solar energy and is LEED-certified.
