LESS than a week after the North Shore and other Lower Mainland areas were blanketed with smoky haze from forest fires, a new service promises to give us advanced warning for next time.
On Tuesday, the B.C. and Alberta governments announced the launch of BlueSky, a forecasting service that uses satellite and weather data to predict smoke coverage and concentrations, and to gather information on forest fires, where they are and how big. The project is a collaboration between the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forests and Range. It was developed for $95,000. The program is operated by UBC’s Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and is based on a similar system used in the United States. You can check the forecast at www.bcairquality.ca. Despite the rain and cooler weather of the last few days, the weather on the south coast remains ripe for fires. More hot and dry conditions are expected this week. A camp fire ban remains in effect across the coast of B.C. The Coastal Fire Centre is asking the public to report any fires they see to 1-800-663-5555. — Tessa Holloway NEWS photo Cindy Goodman
Garden aims to unite locals From page 3 to the Harvest Project, something that Raasch hopes will continue. Raasch sees an opportunity to spread the wealth through other community centres. If these gardens were duplicated at other facilities, he believes the people they draw will be converted and will start gardens of their own. He also sees the community centres as an ideal drop-off point for Harvest Project donations. The Green Team aims to encourage sustainability, save seeds, preserve gardening knowledge, or to some extent just stay social. “Basically, food brings people together. There are so many different experiences,” Raasch said about the ability of gardens to unite different groups of people. “People are just really genuine. They’re drawn to
