The final bell has rung on one of Langley’s most colourful sports figures. Tommy Paonessa passed away Tuesday at age 103. In 2001, Paonessa was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in the boxing pioneer category. He was a deserving inductee. Over six decades, he made an extraordinary contribution to the sport on many levels – as an
athlete, coach, manager, builder, and pioneer. A boxer from the age of 11, he captured the B.C. bantamweight championship at age 19, and turned pro the following year. He boxed for 10 years and became a trainer and coach at age 30. Paonessa worked in the sport for 60 years in total. “I liked the exercise,” Tommy said, of his reason

to join boxing. Paonessa played a part in Canadian boxing history as one of the three judges at the 1972 Muhammad Ali/George Chuvalo heavyweight title bout in Vancouver. Ali earned a hard-fought 15-round decision. “It wasn’t [one sided], Paonessa but Ali won pretty well every round. But boy, George was tough. You could never knock him over,” said Paonessa, who felt Chuvalo and Rocky Graziano were the toughest boxers he’d ever seen. This past November, Paonessa celebrated his 103rd birthday at Langley Gardens Retirement Community.
