Utilities to be wrapped in graffiti-resistant vinyl PHOTO BY

Delta will decorate several traffic signal, hydro and pump station kiosks with a graffiti-resistant vinyl film to deter unsightly spray paint tagging. Staff looked at how other cities, including Surrey and Burnaby, have wrapped utility kiosks with artistic vinyl and found it has been successful at reducing both instances of graffiti and the cost of cleanup. The decorative wrappings here will portray scenes that reflect the area. Council approved the $6,000 expenditure this week.

Enough growth without developing Southlands

Opponents point to TFN reserve, golf course and infill BY

The major housing project planned for the Tsawwassen First Nation reserve is another argument against housing for the contentious Southlands property. That’s the view of Southlands the Facts spokesperson Dana Maslovat, commenting this week on a recent Delta Optimist story about a plan by a pair of TFN families to sell 123 acres that have the development potential for upwards of 1,100 singlefamily lots. “This is something that we have been talking for some time. It’s not that we’re opposed to growth, but there’s a lot of growth already planned and that needs to be taken into account,” said Maslovat. Southlands the Facts

has been lobbying to stop housing proposed for the Southlands. The owner of the property, the Century Group, has put forward a proposal that includes 1,900 units as well as a large portion of the site handed over to the municipality for urban agriculture. According to a design brief by the Century Group, the development, following concepts of new urbanism, would contain a variety of housing types ranging from cottages and granny flats to low-rise apartments and smaller family units. However, Maslovat noted that in addition to the hundreds of condos and townhomes under construction at the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club, there’s also going to be a large amount of infill development taking place in the community. “They (Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee) talked

about some of the plans for infill, the potential for town centre infill to reach 31,000 people, which is a 10,000person increase,” he said. “What we’ve been talking about from the beginning is the suggestion from Century or anyone that Tsawwassen is going to wither up and die if we don’t get this development at the Southlands is that there’s lots of development going on and lots of potential people coming to Tsawwassen without having to put houses on farmland,” Maslovat said. Meanwhile, the Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee, which was to discuss the results of a municipal survey on several topics, including development on the Southlands, cancelled its meeting this week. Another meeting will be scheduled later this month.

If you have not registered in advance, you may register at your voting place on voting day. To register on voting day you will be required to produce two (2) pieces of identification to verify identity and residency (at least one piece of identification must contain your signature). Examples of acceptable identification are: • Property Tax Notice • Credit or Debit card • Utility Bill
