Queer youth summer camp offers spiritual, educational leadership Sandra Thomas

Since attending the camp, Amren has re-launched the gaystraight alliance at Lord Byng and become involved with a youth group at Qmunity, a West End centre for sexual minorities. Naomi’s father Bergen Amren told the Courier he was confident the camp was a good choice for his daughter and wrote a letter of support for organizers to use to help in raising money. “She really enjoyed it,” he said.

Lord Byng secondary student Naomi Amren says taking part in a pilot summer camp last year for “queer, transgendered, questioning and allied youth” changed her life. “I realized, oh my God, there are other people like me out there,” said 16-year-old Amren. “It inspired me to get involved with the larger community.” CampOUT!, organized by the University of B.C.’s Access and Diversity office, will run Aug. 5 to 8 with a goal to foster practi-
