In the second quarter, Coquitlam broke it wide open following a 51-yard dash by Bryan Whittet, his first of three on the day, and Conner McKee’s conversion. Munraj Hayre’s major contributions were on defence, where he tackled White Rock’s punter and also knocked down a pass. Returning an interception for the final major was Cordell Parker.

In a tight contest against Westside, the Coquitlam peewee Wildcats came out scratching and survived 12-8. Ravens get five majors from Patko in win over Kelowna

The Terry Fox Ravens are flexing some considerable muscle during the Triple-A senior boys football preseason. Powered by Jacob Patko’s 164-yard, five-touchdown performance, the 3-0 Ravens cruised to a 48-27 victory over the Kelowna Owls on Friday. Patko broke open a 7-7 game with a pair of quick touchdowns — one off a nine-yard dash, the other a short yardage

push — as No. 2-rated Fox established an early 20-7 edge. It was part of a fast-paced start, which began when Patko capped a seven-play, 62-yard drive with an 18-yard run. The No. 4-ranked Owls tied it on a 51-yard passing play, but Patko replied with his second and third of the day. Ben Sharpe was instrumental in the third major, forcing a fumble in Kelowna territory.

Patko would up the lead with a 15-yard rumble, followed by quarterback Cam Canales’ 21yard scamper before the half. While the Owls cut the gap to 34-14 to start the third quarter, Guillaume Leroux ended the rally with his second interception of the day. Patko followed that with his fifth TD of the day by marching in from 22 yards to cap a 99yard drive. Adding a major was Jared

Soll, while Canales finished with 73 yards rushing and going four of 10 in passing. Colin Livingston, Sharpe and Soll each posted five tackles, while Alex Agnoletto, Bill Evans, Matteo Nardone, Jordan Wicki and Leroux netted three apiece. Fox closes out the exhibition schedule Saturday in Salmon Arm, then open the regular season Oct. 9 against St. Thomas More in Burnaby.

against B.C.’s best Fresh off a successful run at the Douglas College Invitational, the Riverside senior boys Rapids got another shot at a gamut of B.C.’s top volleyball teams on the weekend. The Port Coquitlam crew delivered a polished effort en route to a second-place showing at the 24-team MEI Invitational in Abbotsford. Their lone setback came in the final against Double-A No. 1-ranked MEI, where Riverside fell 2-0 (25-19, 25-19) in close sets. Along the way, the Rapids met a handful of other highly-rated rivals, including No. 2 Triple-A G.P. Vanier, and No. 3 Earl Marriott. Both were unceremoniously dumped. Riverside launched the pool division by fending off Surrey Christian 2-0 (25-18, 25-22) in a tight battle, then had an easier time against J.N. Burnett 2-0 (25-16, 25-19). Against Vanier, the Rapids also won in two straight, outlasting the Island squad 2522 before cleaning up 25-8. Their road took another turn once into the championship draw, following a 2-0 (25-11, 25-13) mashing of Clarence Fulton of Vernon. In the quarterfinals, Riverside survived a tough 2-0 (25-22, 25-21) seesaw against Double-A No. 5-ranked Langley Christian to advance to the semifinals against Marriott. Once again, a quick start proved advantageous, as the Rapids won the first set 25-13 and pushed on to sweep the south Surrey school with a 25-21 decision. Throughout the weekend, Riverside got top notch performances from power Victor Zych and setter Liam Brett. Delivering quick attacks and secondary support was Tyler Toscani, while Spenser Andres and Brendan Williams fired arrows from the service line. Working the backline with due diligence was Hans Seo, while front row specialist Chris Aisekhalaye provided some timely blocks. Riverside prepares for the league opener next week, and the UBC 40-team Invitational on the long weekend.

him this year’s Lemar Durant. The B.C. football MVP last year, Durant stepped into the QB job early in 2009 and marched the team to the Triple-A championship. He was originally expected to get the ball as receiver/rusher, but the decision to move him proved to work out alright. “If anything, this gives us more weapons,” Piche noted. Centennial’s lop-sided win over Rutland saw Sabarre score two times, rushing for 80 yards. Nathan Lund also scored twice, while Gr. 10 Justin Buren caught a handful of passes for 96 yards. He also pulled down three interceptions. Turning one interception into a 70-yard TD runback was Tyler Dadey. The Cents enjoy a bye this week, and spent it preparing for their Oct. 9 regular season opener against the team they bested in the B.C. final, W.J. Mouat, 7:30 p.m. at Percy Perry Stadium.
