would also be the cheapest garbage rate in Metro Vancouver.” This year in Port Coquitlam, residents are paying a total of $176.30 for pickup of garbage, green waste and recycling in 240litre bins. The same services cost Port Moody residents $402. Meanwhile, the 2010 price is set at $303.82 in New Westminster and $211 in Vancouver. While other municipalities will likely raise fees next year due to the tipping fee increase, PoCo’s average 2011 solid waste levy could be the
same as or less than 2010 levels, according to a staff report. “I think people will be happy about it,” Moore said. “But it’s because of their hard work that we’re able to maintain those rates.” This year, the city implemented changes to its solid waste program by expanding acceptable kitchen scraps and moving to alternate-week collection. Since then, the city has saved $47,727 in landfill costs. “We’re at 63-per-cent diversion rate for this year, which is leading Metro Vancouver for sure and I would suspect all of B.C.,” Moore said. “It would be one of the top ones,
in my knowledge, in all of Canada.” Although many residents initially expressed concerns about the modified solid waste program, Moore said the city hasn’t received many comments lately. “The people that I chat with have gotten used to the system. I know in our house, we’re going to go to a smaller bin,” he said. “I’ll be lucky if I put my garbage bin out once a month. If you think about everything that can go into recycling and everything that can go into the green bin, there’s really not much left over.”
Society receives $3,700 for Ioco festival Port Moody’s Ioco Ghost Town Days Festival received close to $4,000 in federal funds last week. Announced by Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam MP James Moore on Sept. 1, the $3,700 funding boost will assist the Port Moody Heritage Society in staging the ninth annual instalment of the festival, which is slated from Sept. 26 to Oct. 3. Like in years past, this year’s festival will
celebrate people and events from the past while including historical re-enactments by 28 local musicians, artisans, and heritage performers. “We are grateful to Canadian Heritage for supporting our ninth annual Ioco Ghost Town Days Festival,” said heritage society president Wayne Beggs. “These funds help create a fun and engaging heritage event that celebrates the past heritage and traditions of Ioco town.”
