Just months after winning a community spirit awards from the Burnaby Board of Trade’s Business Excellence Awards, the Mulberry Retirement Residence has won for the same category with our readers. “We try to be involved with anything and everything to do with seniors in Burnaby,” said general manager Earl Bergen, adding that he and the sixyear-old business’s staff were “thrilled” by the award. Bergen said he feels he genuinely owes it to the residents of the Acorn Avenue facility to be as active in the community as possible. “A lot of what we do is kind of an extension of something our residents have done their entire lives. So many of our residents here have been volunteers in Burnaby for decades – these are the people that built this city, and some of them are still very involved with the community. So, to not do it, it wouldn’t feel right to not be as involved as we are.
