Burnaby South and Mountain move on

One game away from perfect season

Tom Berridge sports editor

The favourites fell during the first round of high school district boys’ soccer playoffs. Sixth-seeded Burnaby South Rebels upset the Alpha Aztecs 5-2, while Burnaby Mountain got a late game-winning strike from Michael Anderson to get by the Moscrop Panthers 3-2 at Burnaby Lake Sports ComplexWest Monday. The two winners will play off against regular season champion Burnaby Central Wildcats and runner-up Cariboo Hill Chargers on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Mountain will face the Chargers at Cariboo Oval, while South will tangle with the Wildcats at Burnaby Lake West. Both games are 3 p.m. starts. The BurWest banner match will be held on Friday at Burnaby LakeWest, Field 4, beginning at 4 p.m. The Rebels looked the higher seeded team throughout the match, enjoying a greater advantage of the play despite Jason Deo’s opening goal for the ’Tecs. Faisal Arif tied the score with a sure left-footed strike later in the half. South then took control in the second session, scoring three times from Esmil Golshan, Brennan Zerb and the first of two goals by captain Tyler Leonard. “The game was sort of a revenge game (for us) because they beat us in the final last year,” said Leonard, who also silenced an attempted Aztec comeback with a late second goal off a penalty kick. Nic DeLuca scored Alpha’s second goal of the game to narrow the deficit

to 4-2. Alpha’s only other defeat was a 2-1 decision to Mountain in the regular season. The 3-3-2 Rebels lost to Alpha 2-1 during the regular season. It was only South’s second win this season over a top-five team. But Leonard says that is all behind them now. “We’re just getting used to our new coach. Yeah, this is a new team. We actually played like a team today,” Leonard said.

Mountain, which has dropped both its headto-head matchups with Central and Cariboo during the regular season by three-goal margins, will get a second chance to redeem itself. In a closely played playoff match with Moscrop, Anderson’s searching strike proved the difference in a match that was up for grabs in the final moments. Mountain took one-goal leads on a pair of set-piece markers from senior mid-

fielder Lukas Stawarski. But unphased Moscrop never folded, striking back with vigour on both occasions. Jordan Pink tied the contest 1-1 just seconds before halftime, successfully knocking in a low shot off a corner kick. Moscrop then fought back to knot the score late in the second half when forward Jas Mann headed in a nicely placed corner kick to the far post. “The team worked hard together,” said Stawarski,

who had a third free kick attempt just miss after a diving save by the Moscrop keeper late in the game. “In the first couple of games we kind of underestimated (Central and Cariboo) a bit. We know what to expect now. We have to play a full 90 minutes and encourage each other.” The two Burnaby/New Westminster AAA finalists will earn a berth into the provincial qualifying round against the best of the North Shore, starting Monday, Nov. 8.

Simon Fraser University is one win away from a perfect season in its NCAA Division II debut. Roman Doutkevitch scored his second penalty kick goal in as many games to help keep the perfect Clan men’s soccer record intact. SFU defeated Montana State Billings 2-0 on Saturday following a 5-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene in their final home game of the year on Oct. 28. Doutkevitch scored the game-winning free kick against Montana State, in the 26th minute after teammate Josh Bennett was fouled in the 18-yard box. Later, Bennett added SFU’s second goal with a strike of his own in the 64th minute. Hide Ozawa earned the shoutout win. On Thursday, SFU dominated fourth-place Northwest Nazarene, scoring all five goals in the first half of play. Gagan Josan opened the scoring in the fourth minute on a penalty kick. Eleven minutes later, Doutkevitch added a second goal from the penalty spot. Thomas McCole tallied his first of two goals in the match in the 22nd minute, tapping in a pass inside a crowded six-yard box. Ten minutes later, McCole added his second goal from 25 yards. Freshman Carlo Basso also notched his team-leading seventh goal of the season. On Saturday, SFU can complete its perfect season with a win over Saint Martin’s College.
