REBECCA HAMBROOK TAKES OUT 2025 WESTERN NSW REGIONAL TRAINING AWARD

Cowra’s Rebecca Hambrook took out Vocational Student of the Year at the 2025 Western NSW Regional Training Award in Orange last Wednesday.

Studying a Certificate IV in Community Services, she was one of two people nominated for the award, with 18 exceptional students nominated for all seven award categories. The award caps off an inspiring life turnaround for Rebecca, who works at the Weigelli Aboriginal Corporation - a local support and rehabilitation service.

Overcoming addiction, incarceration and childhood trauma, Rebecca has used her lived experience to work as a support worker and advocate for First Nations and rural people at the Weigelli Centre Aboriginal Corporation. While in jail, Rebecca was inspired by her inmates to turn her

life around and take on a Certificate IV in Community Services which now sees her supporting clients with medication, making education more accessible by transporting them to TAFE and using gentle art therapy. She says her studies and life experience have made for a powerful combination to transform people’s lives. To other people who have experienced what she has, Rebecca says that they should not be afraid to seek help to reach their goals, especially as their survival skills can translate into positives for their future. Her favourite part of her job is seeing a ‘bit of light return to their eyes’.

Looking to the future, Rebecca is hoping

to earn a Bachelor in Social Work to further her vocation as she currently continues her education with a Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs. She will now go on to represent Cowra and the wider Western NSW region at the 2025 NSW Training Awards in September.

Presented by Department of Education’s Training Services, the NSW Training Awards recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector, with this year marking the 70th anniversary for the awards.

“Multicultural events are a great way to bring people together, and by backing grassroots groups, we’re helping to strengthen community spirit and celebrate the diverse cultures that make our towns so special,” Ms Cooke said.

“These events also give a real boost to local businesses, with hundreds of people turning out each year — it’s great for our main streets, our producers, and the wider economy right across the electorate.”

Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism, Mark Coure said the continuation of this successful program is thanks to the former NSW Coalition Government’s record investment over two years for our multicultural communities in the 2022-23 Budget.

“Many of our local communities are already home to wonderful and vibrant annual festivals and this funding will go a long way to support existing festivals and encouraging more to occur,” Mr Coure said.

The funding is available for community groups planning to deliver festivals and events between 1 September 2025 and 31 March 2026.

Applications are open now and close 5pm, Monday 7 July 2025.

Against a backdrop of curfews, and the fear of arrest, white and black manage to form their own club where they can forget their worries and experience rare happy times, and with a little luck... romance. Forty years on, as the club faces demolition, our characters meet once again to stage a musical reunion and protest in an attempt to save their old stomping ground. Dark secrets and ghosts that have lingered for more than half a century are revealed, and we discover that reconciliation is more than saying sorry.

CHIVERTON ROAD DRAINAGE WORKS NEAR

COMPLETION

The Chiverton Road Drainage Upgrade is a $400,000 Council-led project improving stormwater management across a 127-hectare catchment from the airport to Crowther Creek.

A catchment analysis revealed that aging 450mm pipes under Chiverton Road had shifted, allowing water infiltration that softened the pavement and compromised road safety. In response, Council replaced the old system with a larger twin-cell 1.5m x 1.2m box culvert, constructed a graded

outlet to a nearby dam, deepened the dam, and built 100 metres of concretelined open drain to Crowther Creek.

Funded through the Roads to Recovery program, the project is nearing completion and is expected to finish by 30 June 2025.
