Most of all thank you to the guests who shared Christmas Day Lunch with us. It was through your attendance that made the day a special community gathering. Everyone’s contributions have proven the Christmas and Community Spirit is strong and active in Canowindra. On behalf of the Canowindra Christmas Day Luncheon Committee please accept this as our personal ‘Thank you’. By Deb Rutter

The Canowindra Christmas Day Luncheon 2013 was a great success with approximately 60 people attending. Everyone enjoyed the food, atmosphere, venue and most of all meeting new people and others renewing old friendships. This was the second year of this fantastic community gathering and plans for Christmas 2014 are already underway. Many thanks to all the Community Groups, organizations and individuals for their valuable contributions, without their involvement the goals of this event would not have been obtained. To all the volunteers who operated behind the scenes, thank you for your participation and willingness to support our local community. Special thanks to Maddie and Charlotte Cooper who provided their vocals and musical skills which was greatly appreciated by all attendees. It was again proven just how generous

Letter From The Editor Happy New Year to all of our Readers and Advertisers. We would like to thank you for your support throughout 2013 and we are looking forward to a very busy 2014. We have a lot of new ideas planned for The Canowindra Phoenix for this year. We will be running promotions for our readers to win prizes and we are starting this week by giving away a Family Pass to Dubbo Zoo. Details are contained on Page 5. In addition, we will have significant changes to the website which we will relaunch sometime in February. At all times we appreciate your point of view and feedback. As well, if you are out and about and see something of interest and have some great photos please send these to us. Remember we like all news, details of new arrivals and any other type of celebration.

To the Editor,

Those who increase their debt through cheap borrowing or those trying to be self -sufficient?

The Prime Minister, The Treasurer,The Minister for Health, Assistant Minister and Parliamentary Secretaries. Sirs, It is a ludicrous paradox that private health fund premiums are approved to rise in April 2014. There are people who pay off their debts monthly: rely on the Aged Pension, appreciate the 40% discount on private health premiums and pay hospital charges using the private health fund. These people also benefit from a range of other concessions available due to their age. As a result their financial affairs are finely managed and in some cases they rely on interest from a meagre investment portfolio. How anyone who has not received a dividend from an investment in QANTAS, since 2009,could “hold a candle” for QANTAS, which is on a path of self -destruction, is any-ones guess, simply because their money lies idle. Government ridiculously encourages debt by continuously supporting lower interest rates which produce low investment income. This, when tied with increases in health fund premiums squeezes that section of the community trying to be self sustaining. Who does government really help in the long run?

Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood The Editor, Canowindra Driver Reviver truly appreciates the quick response of Cabonne Council, Canowindra staff to effect repairs when the power supply failed at the Driver Reviver site on New Year’s Eve. Brett and George Gray of Canowindra Electrical Services responded at short notice ensuring temporary supply for the rest of New Year’s Eve. Permanent repairs were then completed at the site in time for the end of the holiday period. Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood.

Have your say... Have your say on the issues that affect you and your community. To submit a letter to the Editor email us at editor@canowindraphoenix.com.au or mail us at PO Box 251 Canowindra NSW 2804. The opinions and views of readers submitting Letters to the Editor are not necessarily the views of the staff and Management of The Canowindra Phoenix.

The Fish are Biting

Nancy Celebrates 70th Birthday Nancy Morrow celebrated her 70th birthday with Family last weekend where all of her sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, daughters, son, grandchildren and great grandchildren attended. Approximately 70 family members were there as well as her partner Bob Bates. Nancy is an active member of the community as she is Secretary of the Women’s Bowling Club, Committee member of the Happy Wanderers and Director of the Bowling Club, just to name a few. She spent a lovely day with close family that are from Albion Park in Macquarie Valley. Her mother Letitia Dawes 92 was unfortunately able to make it, but it is amazing that she is still here to see her 3rd daughter turn 70. Nancy would like to thank all of her family that helped out with the party and would also like to announce that her grandson Chris Gilroy and his wife Vicky just gave Nancy her 8th great grandchild – congratulations!

For all of the crazed fishing fanatics out there, we are happy to report that the fish are biting in the Belubula and Lachlan Rivers. Murray Cod season is officially open from December to August and the legal size is 60cm. Mitchell Skeers, a local from Eugowra caught a fantastic catch yesterday afternoon (photo above). He caught a 12 pound, 73cm Murray Cod on cheese bait. Now we would love to release where he caught this beautiful fish, but we all know a great fisherman never gives away his hot fishing spot. Mitchell was also using spinner baits and lures but the Cod went straight for the cheese. In total he caught 6 Murray Cod, in duration of 3 hours at about 12pm and was extremely happy with his catch, even though it wasn’t the 1 metre long Cod he had hoped for. The rivers are flowing with fresh water from Wyangula Dam and the fish are swarming, so if you’re looking for something to do on the weekend, head out to your local river and throw a line in.

Canowindra Sport Alikinetic Dance

2013 was a big year for us! Our first appearance was at the Australia Day celebrations in Cudal and continued on throughout the year. We also made appearances at the Canowindra Balloon Challenge and Balloon Glow, Moyne Fete, The Canowindra Bushranger Jubilee, where we also ran a bush dance at the Community Hall. We had an annual concert which included 50 students from 3 local towns aged 2-15. Just before the holiday break, we performed a Christmas dance at Moyne’s Carols in the car park. Even though this year was extra busy, we still managed to fit 3 themed disco parties throughout the year. There are more classes available with the additions of a mini Jazz class for 2-3 year olds and Tap classes for 6-18 year olds. For term 1 these classes will be FREE. Spare tap shoes are available so everyone can have a go in proper tap wear before buying their own. I will still be doing jazz/hip hop classes for 3-16 years olds in Eugowra on Monday, Canowindra on Wednesday and Tuesday for pre-primary to seniors. All the free classes are available as well as infants Jazz. Classes will start Monday 3rd February. For more information contact Ali.
