From Lucerne to Lyndon – A Historical Masterpiece Presently, there is a historical masterpiece sitting right here in Canowindra and unfortunately, not all of us have seen it. Lyndon House, or ‘Lucerne’ as it was once known, was built by Andrew Purcell in the 1920’s and showcases amazing 1920’s art deco in the finest detail. The house itself covers three blocks, and is the largest single story house in Canowindra. A mansion to outshine all mansions, the ‘lucerne king’ spared no expense when building this palatial home, decking the walls out with expensive wood panelling and a different decorative ceiling in each room. The name ‘Lucerne,’ which is still clearly inscribed in tiles on the front doorstep (inset), came from Andrew’s successful Lucerne flat enterprise. During the Depression, Andrew was bankrupted and vacated the house, leaving

it empty for a period of time. The Salvation Army purchased the house, and renamed it ‘Lyndon’ in the early 1940’s. The house was transformed into an orphanage for girls. Elaine Colgate, a Psychiatric Nurse, then purchased the house from the Salvation Army in the late 1970’s and provided services for intellectually disabled people. This allowed them to be integrated with the community. These services then branched out and welcomed people who were suffering from drug and alcohol abuse and the house is presently a Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre. Lyndon House will be open this Saturday 30th November from 11-2pm to the general public to come and view the house. Why not come along, enjoy a BBQ and learn about this historical masterpiece right here in Canowindra.

Make Cabonne Communities Count! Canowindra residents have until next Monday (2 December) to return the Make Cabonne Communities Count survey if they have not already done so. “A little under 190 Canowindra residents have completed the survey, which is about half the completion rate of Molong, so obviously we would like as many Canowindra responses as possible before next Monday.” Survey forms were mailed to all ratepayers in October and further forms can be obtained from the Canowindra Business Chamber or by calling Council on 6392 3200. The survey may also be completed online by visiting the Council’s website www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au

Dear Editor

Publisher’s Thank you

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the loyal readers and advertisers of The Canowindra Phoenix for their kind words of support and encouragement on our first issue. We have received some constructive feedback, and will look to accommodate some of these changes over the next few weeks. We are committed to the Canowindra community, but will always be inclusive of others. We look forward to your continued support and contribution to The Canowindra Phoenix.

This week (November 25 – 29) is Asbestos Awareness Week and, with wild weather and fires sweeping parts of our state, it is a timely reminder that this deadly material is still present in our communities – in many of our homes, sheds and other structures. In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 3 Australian homes still contain asbestos-based materials. Asbestos is particularly dangerous when it has been disturbed and the fibres are loose. If you are involved in the clean-up of any materials and you suspect asbestos may be present, be extremely careful and contact local authorities immediately. Some people suffer no effects from asbestos exposure, while for others a single exposure can trigger disease.

Homegrown Talent Josh Maynard is a remarkable 16-year-old singing guitarist who performed in public for the first time in April at the Cowra Home Grown, and won! Born and bred in Cowra, Josh performs at Taste Canowindra each month as a part of the Folk@Canowindra. Josh has also performed at many talent quests including Henry Lawson, Canowindra Busking Competition and Parkes Country Music Festival, aways placing either first or second. “I have been playing the guitar and singing for about three years, and really enjoy playing at Taste Canowindra as I can play my style of music, which varies between the country and pop/soul genre.” His inspirations have been very vast but states that he has been heavily influenced by his father and other pop/soul artists. “My father was a huge inspiration to me. Shane Howard heavily influenced my style of music as I believe he is one of the best Australian song writers. I also enjoy modern pop/soul artists like Adele, Jason Mraz and Ed Sheeran.” Josh’s future aspirations are uncertain at this point but he would like to attend university and integrate music into anything he does. He would also like to see this small country region provide more opportunities for young people to perform.

stay safe

It won’t be long until the kids are on summer holidays and, for many families, that means plenty of driving to visit friends and family. Whether you are heading to the coast, out on a day trip to the dam or packing up the house and family to visit the in-laws at Christmas, it helps to be prepared. You are not only ensuring the safety of your family, but other travellers who share the road. To ensure you get to your destinations, here are some must-have safety tips! Prepare your car- have it serviced and checked with a spare tyre handy, no one wants the hassle of a break down. Also make sure the car is fully insured in case of an unwanted accident. Remember double demerits – Do not speed, it’s not worth the accident or the hefty fine Be rested before a long drive – plan the trip wisely and share the driving and take breaks every 2 hours to avoid fatigue.

Keep mobile phones charged – so if something does happen, you can call emergency services, but do not use them while driving! Keep a map or GPS handy and stick to the roads you know or main highways to avoid getting lost. Do not advertise that you’re going on holidays to the general public or on social media, as this encourages break and enters. Be prepared - Always carry the basic first aid kit on you, just in case Carry water and oil in the car at all times, you never know when you might need them Keep restrained pets and everyone in the car, including children, for everybody’s safety NRMA estimates the busiest times to be the last day of school; 20th December, two days before Christmas 23rd, day after boxing day 27th along with January 4th. Otherwise – Enjoy your holiday!

Tailgating the fit ladies The Four Fit Ladies set off on their adventure last Tuesday, ready for their journey from Vietnam to Cambodia which would see them ride 300 km through hills, humid weather, muddy tracks, sugar canes and rice paddies. Even though the ladies were challenged by sore bums and aching muscles, no one showed signs of giving up. The ladies have experienced the unique landscape of Cambodia, describing it as a lush paradise of green salts and rice fields, with beautiful families who have cheered them on. But the “beauty” was brief, after they encountered muddy roads, flat tyres, stacks, steep inclines and a semi-wild elephant! However, the ladies were rewarded with some Cambodian coastal beauty as they rode into the seaside town of Sihanoukville, and were thrilled to dive into their hotel pool. The ladies have now completed their ride, and are enjoying much earned rest, whilst taking in the beautiful surroundings. “We are very proud of ourselves and each other, and want to thank those that have supported us along the way. The sweat, the tears and the muscle aches were all worth it.” Jane said.
