This activity serves the dual purpose of being an excellent pre-assessment and acting as an access point to the geometry unit. I reference this activity many times throughout the unit as the students’ knowledge of the geometrical shapes expand. Many students have “aha moments” when we get to the naming shapes by the number of sides they have. This lesson really helps me to determine the student’s’ level of familiarity with geometry by the sophistication of the shapes that the students build and name.
