Volunteer Assistant Coach Fifth Season Elmira College

Director of Hockey Operations Second Season Postdam ‘05

David Smith is in his fifth season with the Golden Griffin hockey program as a volunteer assistant coach.

Patrick Massaro is in his second year as Director of Hockey Operations at Canisius College. Among his responsibilities with the Griffs, Massaro coordinates the program’s video efforts, manages all aspects of travel and assists with the team’s community outreach programs and fundraising.

Smith also serves as the monitor of the health and wellness program of the on-ice officials in the National Hockey League, a position he’s held since 2000. The program includes an off-ice fitness regimen, and developing and maintaining a league-wide network of athletic trainers and physicians for medical treatment and assistance for the officials. Prior to his current position, Smith served as the head trainer and strength and conditioning coach for the Florida Panthers from 1995-99. Smith also held that same position with the New York Rangers from 1985-95, including when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1994. Smith graduated from Elmira College where he served as the captain of the hockey team. Smith and his family reside in Buffalo.

Also an adjunct professor at Canisius in the sport management department, Massaro has assisted with CAN/AM Hockey and at USA Hockey Player Development Camps during his tenure as a Griff. Prior to joining the Canisius staff in 2010, the Massena, N.Y. native spent five years as a military police officer with the United States Marine Corps. Massaro earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Postdam in 2005. He is currently pursuing his master’s in sport administration at Canisius.

Koki Takano is in his fourth year as an assistant athletic trainer at Canisius College where his primary responsibilities lie with the hockey and rowing teams. He also serves as an adjunct professor and clinical instructor in the CAATE Accredited Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program.

A former Golden Griffin goaltender, Taylor Anderson is in his second season as the equipment manager with the hockey program.

Takano joined Canisius after serving internships with the New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Dragons. In addition, Takano served as a teaching fellow within the CAATE Accredited Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program at Long Island University.

Anderson spent three seasons on the Canisius hockey team from 2007 to 2010. He appeared in nine games, posting a 2-20 record, 3.54 goals against average and .888 save percentage. A two-time member of the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team, Anderson earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Canisius in 2011 and is currently pursuing his master’s in sport administration.

He is a certified instructor of CPR/AED through the American Red Cross and a Performance Enhancement Specialist certified through The National Academy of Sports Medicine. Takano is currently an active member of the National Athletic and New York State Athletic Trainers’ Associations. The Sapporo, Japan native graduated from Kean University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2006. He earned his master’s in sport sciences from Long Island University in 2008. Takano and his wife, Miyuki, live in Buffalo.
