OBJECTS CONTAINERS WORLDS 2016 World Trade Cener Tower In Downtown Los Angeles, CA

Penn Design 704 Tom Wiscombe Studio//Can Fu+Hua Yang This semester we mainly focus on explore architecture as world through radical interiority. Our point of departure will be Machado and el-Khoury’s concept of “hollow monoliths“, where the solidity of a monolith seems to be undermined by its emptiness. Architecture, of course, can never be actually empty, so it will be the task of the studio to use combinations of poche, nested objects, and extrusions from new grounds. Rather than presuming an architectural ontology where buildings exterior expression (posture, shaper, contextural linkages, social function) is primary, we attempt to create architecture which inverts that implied hierarchy. Some of the repercussions of this inversion are that architecture might tend to deflect semiotic readings through exterior muteness, and create its own internal density, language, sacale, and even physics on its interior. Interiors could begin to contain objects and formations that might ordinarily be encoutered on the earthen surface we refer to as ‘land‘, but in strange juxtapositions, awkward orientations, and improbable scales. With the design strategy of applying three entites: Figure, Liner and Shell, to create a interior world totally losing the gravity and normal orientations. Architecture, in this way, becomes a container for a new, nested world, served from land, from World.

BLURING ADJACENT 2015 Auction House and Galleries in Chelsea New York City

Penn Design 602 Hina Jamelle Studio//Angela Huang + Can Fu The concept of the auction houses has changed since the invention of the internet, and use of digital technology. Hence the traditional auction houses are replaced with “cyber auction rooms” that all the bidding and showing are through the web, and the large auditorium type of auction rooms are replaced with smaller auction rooms combined with gallery and rretreat spaces that are specifically for the high-end clients. In this case, auction is not about trading, it becomes a performance and a show. The organic façade pieces continue to the interior and serves as the purpose of circulation, structure, and artificial lighting. Reinventing the traditional organization of an auction house, just like the continuous facade, there are obvious start and end of a program or space. The auction room shifts the program to gallery space through undulated ramps and the smaller gallery spaces fading into an open space and becomes a café with open seatings.

SHIFTING HYBRIDS 2014 Transformation for A New Hotel & Residential Building in Tribeca, NYC

Penn Design 601 Hwina Jamelle Studio//Angela Huang + Can Fu With the use of particular parameter and technique concepts like degree of curvature, crease and shifting, the apartment-hotel hybrid is developed to a series of building systems for both facade and interior, such as window frames, ceilings, stairs, furnishing and partition walls, etc. The hybrid with interesting geometric form and layered facade quality are formed due to the buildings system which reveal the techniques and geometry form derived from parameters set up previously. Similarly, the projects’ units aggregation following the interlocking logic as well, which allows puzzle-like space formed for the interior space, concave and convex layered surface quality happened for the facade. In addition, the puzzle formation create various units type and size, which allow the space be applied for multiple function and programs, such as hotel space, studio and suites and shared central public space, like a system of dining space.

CELLULAR NESTING 2015 Cultural Complex Center For Golden Orange International Film Festival In Antalya, Turkey

Penn Design 701 Sulan Kolatan Studio//Can Fu + Grace Kim Home to the Golden Orange Film Festival, the annual International event, Antalya is located on active geological formation featuring rich underground ecosystem. Start with the Grasshopper script technique of Minimal Surface Cell Formation to produce the base cell space for the program. In addition, inspired from cave ecosystem, the project explores the duality that exist in the cave formation. Three major categories to focus for the design of the theater are form, mass, and materials. The connectivity of long tunnels and series of chambers observed inside of the cave are translated into the interior of the theater. The outside, inside, and in-between spaces of two different minimal surfaces that are nested together, creating moments of inversions that interweave various programs together. The soft and hard materials not only contribute in functional role such as acoustic control and structural support but also challenges the idea of integration of sustainability into the design. The formation of the theater are populated in various scales throughout the site as landscape, providing inhabitable spaces for both flora and fauna while functioning as public park with strong emphasis on the bike-ride system.

CIRCULATION PATTERN 2014 Urban Forces Formation of Automotive Research & Exhibition Center in Philadelphia, PA

Penn Design 502 Eduardo Rega Studio//Can Fu The urban composition developed based on a series of research and mappings of visible and invisible urban forces, which are traffic, residents and wind. Through analyzing the actions performed by these urban forces on the site, including traffic flow, surveillance of residents and wind pollution movement, a functioning combination form and space is finally established. It is really interesting to investigate the transformation of these 3 forces to the actual building form, functional space and circulation. The automotive center was divided into 3 major functional zones based on the space variation created by the circulation path. The basement with large open space of building is divided as the parking and museum zone. Then the upper level is used for research labs and auditorium. And the tower part is for offices and classrooms. As the circulation leading the visitors and cars going through the building, related space with program function is created by these pathways. Different path circulations leading to different functional space.

PARAFICTIONAL OBJECT 2015 Golden Lamp Inovation Process In Penn Design Upper Gallery

Penn Design Arch 703 Kutan Ayata Studio//Can Fu + Lu Han In Contemporary art, one of the most relevant practices for architecture can be found under the loose heading of Parafiction. Architecture has much in common with parafictional art practices, which is multi-medium and the most “real“ of any art, it is constantly engaged in questions of context, and it is a specific object or scenario that inserts itself into the constantly changing conditions of reality. This representation and innovation process of the object (extracted from the classical still life paintings) is attempt to explore the aesthetics of realism for the objects in a different context. In this project, through redesign the golden bottle taken from Dutch painting Banquet Still Life by Adriaen Can Utrech, 1644 , bring the new relations between objects themselves in certain scenario, aesthetic relations of color, texture, materiality, luminosity, and reflectivity. The “new” golden bottle will seek to blend in, but not to hide. In the meantime, the transformation of the bottle’s form bring new function the “new“ object produced, it become a golden lamp to blend in the original scenario again. The estrangement of context is a crucial aspect of realism, where a shift allows one to see the familiar in new terms as doubt overtakes assumed certainties; doubt which can manifest materially, formally, programmatically, and ultimately architecturally.

LINE TO SURFACE 2013 Cocooning Simulation Research Arylic Powder Material 3D Printing Test

Penn Design 501 Simon Kim Studio//Can Fu This project start with studying the process of cocooning, to get a better understand of its structure formation, which starts from simple large structure and then developed to a more dense netwroks. Density creates beauty, but always start from simple structure or outline. Second step is to set up a Grasshopper Script based on the geometric relationship between points and lines derived from cocooning process. The code developed a line structure with the randomly growing lines but still connecting among the triangular points. To continue the study of line connection and rotation, but focusing more on the irregular way of line connecting and random trigonometry. Through studying the structure of cocoon, the modules with more irregular form and random structure were derived from the same structure theory. It is called the Structure Hyperplasia. Third step is to develop the line structure space produced from computer coding to the curvature surface space with the application of Maya technique. This step bring the project to a advanced level which derived from cocooning but successfully complete the transformation of the line to the occupied space and explore the possibility of spacial function of lines.

MINIMAL SURFACE 2015 Sun Shading Entrance Wall for 2015 International Architecture Biennale in Antalya, Turkey

Penn Design 701 Sulan Kolatan Studio//Can Fu +Grace Kim + Hannibal Newsom (TA) This Parametric Wall was designed as a Sun Shading Device for 2015 Antalya International Architecture Biennale in Turkey. As the topic of this Biennale is the Parametric Modernism, this Sun Shading Wall was assembled at the Entrance of Exhibition to bring people to a world full of digital fabrication applied in the architectural field. Take people to reconsider the role of digital technique in the architectural design. In order to fulfill the sun shading function, we explored the grasshopper script of Minimal Surface to control the opening size of each aggregation cell. In this way, the light going through the wall will be controlled with different intensity at various angle. In addition, the wall was designed as the dual layer of two cell combination to create more interesting shadow pattern when the light going through. In terms of the actual wall fabrication part, as it is fabricated in the state and transferred to Turkey, we chose FDM plastic material to 3d print the single cell and reassembled all the cell modules in Turkey, In this way, the shading wall was light and easily assembled.

Winner of 2014 Architizer A+Awards (In the Student Design/Build Project category, which is voted on by a jury of professionals.)

This High-design Bird Blind --- Avian Observatory was a collaborating work designed and constructed together by students from Andrew Colopy’s “Studio Confluence” and Ken Tracy’s Digital Fabrication class. The purpose of this digital fabrication project was to design, fabricate, and build an avian observatory at Riverlands in collaboration with the Audubon Center at Riverlands and the Rivers Project Office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The observatory is a giant brown cocoon with the form inspired from Ghery’s Deconstructive taxonomies. Through lots of research on the birds’ living habits and optesthesia distinguish ability, the panel pattern design is based on the think of Inverse Camouflage, in order to blend the building with surrounding environment and avoid interrupting birds’ behavior. Accord to CRYPSIS theory, we chose the Disruptive/Dazzling Patterning for the panel pattern&color design, which can blend the observers’ opening on installation from the background with Hi-contrast Pattern.
