FROM THE HEADMASTER
We see our scholars as beacons, shining brightly as an inspiration to their peers and across the school. This talented group fulfils an important role in our aim for excellence in all that we do.
OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPECTATIONS Scholars in all disciplines can thrive at Canford. There are numerous enrichment societies and a very wide range of creative arts and sporting opportunities, making full use of the school’s first class facilities and inspirational surroundings. Thrive they certainly do, in so many areas, perhaps achieving an ABRSM diploma, National sporting selection, a place in the National Youth Theatre, an Oxbridge scholarship or a top Art prize Our award holders are supported individually with regular progress reviews to ensure that they are making the very most of the opportunities open to them and achieving their full potential.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR
In turn, scholars are expected to act as leaders in their field, aspiring to excellence and enjoyment in learning. They should contribute actively to the life of the school acting as ambassadors for their particular subjects. They are also encouraged to expand their horizons beyond their subject interests, exploring the connection and coherence in learning across different disciplines while aiming for the stars in their particular field.
When the school sold its Assyrian frieze in 1994 for £7.7 million, a substantial proportion of the proceeds was invested to help fund scholarships. While the number of scholarships may vary from year to year, as a guide, over recent years an average of 38 have been offered to those joining Year 9 each year, and an average of 15 to those joining the Sixth Form.
With all our awards the most important thing we seek is a sense of what the future holds. An ability to rise to the occasion counts and, while we do all we can to create a welcoming atmosphere that will allow candidates to give their best, seizing opportunities is critical. Whilst current schools’ references and other information they supply are an important touchstone for our judgements, this is firmly balanced by an individual’s ability to make an impact while they are with us.
AVAILABILITY
We offer around fifty scholarships each year for those with a distinctive talent in a core area. We are not only looking for pupils who demonstrate a high level of current achievement, although that is a benchmark. Personality and ambition are also crucial. We want scholars to display the enthusiasm and drive to lead by example. In return we offer these talented pupils a dynamic, forward thinking learning environment where they can develop their individual strengths to the very highest levels, whether as an academic, in sport or in the creative arts. 13+ ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS Canford’s Academic Scholars are inspired toward the highest levels of attainment and academic ambition from the outset. The underlying purpose of our carefully designed programme is to provide an intellectually stimulating experience in which all Academic Scholars are inspired to pursue, and equipped with the tools, to realise their considerable potential. In addition to this programme, the academic progress of all scholars is monitored closely and appraised centrally on a yearly basis. With a clear expectation to show leadership, there are many opportunities for scholars to develop and nurture understanding skills both through the rigours of a robust and challenging curriculum, as well as a number of clubs and societies which expand their horizons well beyond the confines of the classroom.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR
Shells: All Shells become members of The Tower Society which meets fortnightly for lunchtime discussion. Typically, a member of staff or visiting speaker introduces a topic about which they are passionate and then over lunch scholars discuss the ideas raised. The groups are small and informal to encourage the scholars to experiment with ideas, take risks and develop their thinking. Recent topics have included Conspiracy Theories, The Nature of Truth, Animal Intelligence, Behavioural Economics and Feminism.
The award of an Academic Scholarship is the beginning of a relationship. We are looking for enquiring minds, for pupils who enjoy academic study and are keen to stretch themselves and explore new academic challenges. We look for pupils with the personality and strength of character to lead and enthuse their peers. We would expect Academic scholars to: •
Aim high, in internal and external examinations and in university entrance, both in terms of effor t and engagement
Fourth Form: As Academic Scholars move into the Fourth Form they are invited to attend a more formal series of evening Scholar Lectures in the inspiring setting of the Long Gallery. These ‘lectures’ are delivered by Sixth Form pupils and occasionally external speakers, following a fast paced ‘Ted Talk’ style format in which three distinct and different academic areas are presented and discussed. The Sixth Form speakers are often Scholars or Academic Pupil Leaders themselves and provide the younger pupils with a clear link to their own academic future.

Fifth Form: At this stage the programme seeks to provide an engaging change of pace from the rigours of the taught syllabus by offering scholars a series of small off-site trips to areas of local academic interest. There are four trips in the year designed as an academic tonic; to stimulate and refresh the mind beyond the confines of Canford and the GCSE syllabus. In addition scholars in the Fifth Form are gently introduced to the Oxbridge programme and the key behaviours and characteristics of successful applicants.

Sixth Form: Scholars become members of the Wilkinson Society and enjoy a bespoke programme of seminar events working with other Lower Sixth pupils from local schools to explore a range academic areas beyond the A Level syllabus. The Wilkinson Society also hears from a number of external speakers over the course of the year. All scholars are also encouraged to deliver lectures to the Lower School and there is a comprehensive preparation programme for all those with Oxbridge aspirations. In the Upper Sixth all academic scholars are expected to lead by example in the classroom and in their houses but many will apply for and become Academic Pupil Leaders. Those who apply to Oxbridge are fully supported in all stages of their application at a school wide and departmental level.
FORMAT Academic scholarships are held at Canford normally early in March. For those unable to travel, daily accommodation at the school is usually available.
SYLLABUS Candidates sit papers in English, Mathematics, a Modern Language, Science, History, Geography and Reasoning. Latin is an optional addition. There is also a series of interviews.

13+ ART SCHOLARSHIPS Our Art Scholars are ambassadors for the Creative Arts and engage with a variety of activities and projects that promote creative practice to a high level around the school. The Scholars’ programme actively encourages development of these attributes and promotes an inclusive environment within the Art Department and wider school community.
WHAT WE OFFER All Art Scholars have access to a programme of activities and events that changes each year. Parts of the programme are tailored to particular year groups, while others involve scholars across the entire school. This community approach reflects an important element of the ethos of the department, and the promotion of a positive environment, conducive to learning and innovation.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR Art is an inclusive and vibrant department at Canford. We believe that our scholars should promote a sense of engagement and creativity. As a subject it connects areas of life and education for pupils, and allows them the opportunity to make a statement, comment, observation or promote a message. It is a vehicle for discovery and the development of practical and theoretical skills, and at each level seeks to challenge and excite. We would expect our Art Scholars to: •

Shells/Fourths/Fifths: From the moment our scholars join the school there are a range of opportunities on offer. Shells produce designs for the Headmaster’s Postcard that is used for correspondence throughout the year and artwork from each scholar is exhibited in the Annual Scholars’ exhibition. Collaborative creative projects run by the Creative Arts Pupil Leaders include work for display around the school. Weekend workshops are held to develop skills using a variety of media including Resin Casting, Printmaking, Character Design, Felt making and Photography.

Sixth Form: Sixth Form scholars submit designs each year for the Canford Christmas Card and there is a programme of evening life drawing sessions to extend drawing skills. For those applying for creative degrees at university this is invaluable. Scholars attend The Arts Society Annual Lecture at The Arts University Bournemouth and are invited to take part in a residential trip which has been recently in Portland, Dorset.

In addition: All scholars take part in charity events such as ‘Crafternoon’ and ‘Inktober’ an international project where every October artists take on the challenge of one ink drawing a day for the entire month. House Art integrates practical, problem solving and organisational skills while scholars also attend specialist lectures from practising artists and designers to enhance their understanding of a range of creative careers and concepts.
As a scholar there is a requirement to study the subject to GCSE and an expectation of study at A Level for at least one year, although the latter requirement can be reviewed as we are aware pupils may have specific pathways which require study of other subjects in Sixth Form. In such cases scholars will be required to meet an agreed set of expectations which ensure they contribute significantly in their area of scholarship if it is to be retained.
FORMAT Art scholarships are held at Canford over a day in the Spring. Pupils will be invited to undertake specific tasks in advance and bring with them a portfolio of work.

13+ DESIGN TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS At Canford we encourage Design Scholars to become independent motivated problem solvers, able to apply their skills in a wide variety of situations. We inspire them to explore the limits of their potential and encourage them to work on improving their core design skills.
WHAT WE OFFER We aim to stimulate curiosity and provide an experience in which Design Scholars are equipped with the independence and confidence to suggest solutions to problems and the technical competence to manufacture quality prototypes for evaluation. The department has excellent facilities within a dedicated building, where pupils enjoy an impressive suite of spacious workshops and classrooms offering a full spectrum of equipment. Scholars are encouraged to come in to work independently throughout the day, with the department open until 18:30 each evening. Scholars have the freedom to explore a diverse range of projects including graphical design, architecture, interior design and industrial design, all under the umbrella of Product Design. We also offer scholars the opportunity to get involved with National competitions, Jaguar Land Rover 4x4, which enhance their understanding of how ‘real life’ design projects are undertaken. Scholars have regular meetings with staff to review their progress, offer advice and inspire them to consider a future path in a STEM career.
In addition to these general opportunities open to all, there are specific programmes for individual year groups: Shells: Our new scholars are invited to the Design Dinner where they can be inspired by the Sixth Form projects. They also participate in short one day design based competitions and are encouraged to get involved in the Jaguar Land Rover 4x4 challenge, with the opportunity to learn project management skills. They also take part in a number of co-curricular Design workshops. Fourths/Fifths: Design Scholars begin to take on more leadership roles as they move up the school. They plan and run the junior JLR 4x4 teams and take an active part in the annual Design Dinner, which allows them to gain confidence and improve communication skills. We encourage scholars to take an active role within the department showcasing their projects in displays and start thinking about applying for the Arkwright Scholarships if considering STEM based university courses. iGCSE coursework is the main focus in the Fifth Form but our scholars are still offered the opportunity to take part in a number of co-curricular design projects. Sixth Form: Sixth Form scholars take active leadership roles competing at the highest levels in the National Land Rover 4x4 competition. The skills learnt here are important for prospective engineers, designers and those looking at creative degrees. They are encouraged to look at a design based EPQ, gaining knowledge and insight into more advanced materials, processes and design thinking. They also take part in a dedicated lecture series ‘Inspired by Design’ involving a mix of external and internal speakers, and a programme of external visits to factories placing what they are learning into context. Scholars actively participate in and help run co-curricular Design workshops and organise and then present their current project work at the Design Dinner.

FORMAT
Design scholars should be inquisitive about the world and actively engaged in questioning why products are the way they are. They should have the ability to effectively communicate graphically and generate a variety of diverse solutions. They should show the potential to gain technical knowledge of industrial manufacturing techniques and be working to improve their skills in making. Potential and interest is far more important than current knowledge, given the diverse range of backgrounds applicants come from. We would expect our Design Scholars to:
Design Technology scholarships are held over a day in the Spring. A pupil’s ‘portfolio’ forms the central part of the assessment where we look for interest, and a clear ability to make reasoned design decisions. On the day itself they will work on a specific task in the department, to complement work they will have been asked to prepare in advance.

In A Level Upper Sixth project work we encourage independence in our scholars to explore interesting issues and push the limits of what they are capable of, gaining an understanding of how universities expect work to be undertaken. Our expert staff act as consultants working alongside, rather than directing their progress.

13+ DRAMA SCHOLARSHIPS At Canford, we believe that all pupils have stage potential, and their involvement facilitates the development of disciplines and experiences. Drama is a powerful unifying force which encourages confidence and teamwork, as well as being fun and providing the opportunity for a real sense of achievement. As such, we place significant value on the concept of ensemble, and expect our Drama Scholars to work alongside and actively encourage all pupils that seek to be involved.
WHAT WE OFFER The Layard Theatre is home to the busy Drama department and provides an inspirational environment in which to develop skills both practically and academically. The building provides a dynamic classroom - an exciting place to study and explore both practically and academically. Currently there are around 60 pupils studying Drama and Theatre Arts at GCSE and A Level. The Drama Scholars’ Programme is based on five key attributes – engagement, collaboration, ease of expression, creativity and discipline. We seek to encourage and develop these both within the theatre and around the school, for example helping pupils to apply these skills when giving presentations in English or Geography lessons or taking creative risks in Art, Science or Maths. The attributes of the Drama Scholar can help to stimulate the curious, open and willing culture of creativity that we aim to nurture at Canford. Each year group is offered tailored opportunities. Shells: In the Shells, Drama Scholars are invited to contribute to the musical, the junior play or any of the termly small-scale studio productions. They may choose to contribute as cast or crew but should aim to be involved in at least two productions a year throughout their time at Canford. Dedicated scholar projects take place throughout the week and additional preparation is

offered on Sundays where required. We offer challenging texts that encourage complex characterisation and ensemble performance - recent junior plays have included The Wardrobe and Love and Information. Fourth Form: As our scholars grow in confidence, they can gain more responsibility in pupil-led drama by taking leadership roles in projects such as the House Drama Festival or the popular panto at the end of the Christmas term. In addition to the school-wide Drama programme, Drama Scholars are given priority access to workshops and performances provided by external professionals. Recent theatre companies have included The Paper Birds, Splendid Productions and Prodigal Theatre/UPG. Scholars may start to specialise in particular disciplines, including the technical aspects of drama and extend their skill and understanding through one-to-one monologue tuition with members of the Drama department or via mentoring in design or technical support provided by our highly skilled technical team. It is also generally expected that drama scholars will take the subject at GCSE. Fifth Form: Fifth Form scholars are invited to audition for the more challenging senior play project in the Easter Term that seeks to extend the theatrical experiences. However, as the pressures of external exams loom, involvement in theatre projects is discussed to ensure pupils have adequate time to complete the performance element of GCSE Drama to the highest standards whilst balancing their workload. For those who would prefer something less pressurised than the more time consuming experience of being part of a main cast, we offer opportunities such as organising and executing a live-performance feed of productions, with scholars considering the cinematographic and editing aesthetic of the product, as well as approaches to event management. Sixth Form: All Drama Scholars are expected to take a proactive role throughout their final two years at Canford. Whether it be on stage, helping backstage or leading events and developing pop-up performances we would hope that our scholars will independently wish to create and facilitate drama for our community. Some scholars will utilise their areas of expertise to become involved in directing or mentoring lower school pupils. Scholars will also be invited to join outgoing trips to performances and workshops by respected and influential theatre
companies. In the Upper Sixth all Drama Scholars are expected to lead by example in the classroom and in their houses, and many will apply to become Performing Arts Pupil Leaders. Those appointed will be given increased responsibility in the organising of events such as pre-recorded theatrical screenings, open mic nights or the House Drama Festival. Those who apply to Drama Schools or the National Youth Theatre are fully supported in all stages of their application. All scholars will also enjoy regular sessions where, as a whole group, they will meet and view live productions, both online or at the theatre and then discuss together their thoughts on the play. There will also be opportunities to meet with professionals involved in all aspects of the industry either online or in person here at Canford and also to enjoy seminars with staff to enrich our scholars with a holistic view of drama as a medium, in areas not normally covered in class or the exam specifications.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR We would expect our Drama Scholars to make an outstanding contribution to the Drama Department and the creative ambitions of the school. We would also expect them to: •
Lead by example, displaying the attributes of a Drama Scholar both in the theatre and the wider school

HOW WILL YOU DEVELOP AS A DRAMA SCHOLAR? With your commitment to the department comes our promise that we will support you as you develop your interest in drama. We will guide you to explore aspects of the subject both practically and theoretically that you may have been unaware of and we will introduce you to practitioners, plays and genre that are not normally covered in academic work. We will work closely with you to develop specific areas of interest and to support you as you progress through your time at Canford. Although we cannot promise you main roles in every production, we will always provide you with opportunity.
FORMAT Candidates will be asked to prepare specific tasks before the scholarship, and the day itself will involve devised group work and solo tasks, in addition to discussions and individual interviews.

13+ MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS Our carefully designed and individually tailored programme for Music Scholars seeks to allow them to develop their talents in three inter-connected areas – musicianship, leadership and excellence. The underpinnings of a Music Scholar’s programme are achieved through consistent progress and a sense of shared purpose in striving to reach goals.

Fourths/Fifths: We would expect our scholars to now take a significantly leading role in at least one junior ensemble, participate in appropriate chamber music ensemble(s) and take a greater leadership role in senior ensembles. Alongside GCSE Music commitments, identified Music practice time continues with more frequent solo performing opportunities. We would also expect our scholars to be achieving at least Grade 8 on their main instrument by the end of the Fifth Form. Sixth Form: There is a greater focus on initiative and independence in musical learning in the Sixth Form, with our scholars taking a leading role/principal seat in main school ensembles and undertaking demanding Chamber music. There are also significant and regular solo opportunities, including a concerto movement with the orchestra in the Upper Sixth year. We offer targeted interview/audition preparation for those who choose to apply to read music at University or Conservatoire, including one-to-one preparation time with specialist Canford staff. Our scholars are likely to take a diploma (ARSM) on their main instrument, supported by weekly accompaniment sessions with the Director of Music, who is also a diploma examiner. Sixth Form scholars can also access the music school kitchen for tea-making - a welcome and much appreciated reward!
In addition to these, the pattern of involvement for each year group see scholars build their skills, contribution and leadership over the five years.
Holders of Music scholarships will be expected to study Music to the end of their Lower Sixth year and to play an active role in the life of the department.
Shells: Recognising the demands of transferring to a new school, we will start by involving scholars in 2-3 instrumental ensembles. Scholars are likely to play a leading role in a junior ensemble, encouraging their peers by example. Stretch and challenge will be found through membership of a senior ensemble, where they will learn from playing alongside our older musicians and individual lessons will set the targets for the short and medium term with identified Music practice time. By the Summer Term, we would hope to see the next grade successfully passed.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR A Music Scholarship offers significant opportunities to those pupils who win an award and their skills and talents are being rewarded for the contribution they will make to the school. We would expect our Music Scholars to: •
Maintain effective progress in their instrumental studies. This is likely to see scholars improving in standard at an approximate rate of one grade per year, with 13+ Music Scholars reaching Grade 8 during the Fifth Form on their main instrument, and all scholars achieving a diploma before leaving Canford. Second and third instruments will also be expected to make appropriate progress at a rate of a grade per year.

Perform regularly in concer ts, both as a soloist and in school ensembles
• • Take a leading role in an appropriate range of ensembles including singing in the school’s chapel choir. The exact ensembles in which a scholar will perform will depend on their instrument and their year group and is at the direction of the Director of Music. Scholars are expected to be confident sight-readers, committed in their attendance, and, as they develop their skills, helpful to other pupils around them. Choral singing is a vital par t of musical learning, helping musicians to internalise the sound and developing essential ear and aural skills that suppor t instrumental and academic musical learning. •
Take their instrumental and/or singing tuition from Canford’s own staff to ensure that a carefully tailored and monitored programme of tuition is in place to suppor t their musical development
• • As a scholar there is a requirement to study the subject to GCSE and an expectation of study at A Level for at least one year
FORMAT Music scholarships are held at Canford at the end of January. Candidates will usually offer two instruments, but this is not required. Grade 5 (distinction) should be the minimum standard in the main instrument, although it is not expected that scholarship applicants will necessarily have taken the examination. The audition will include playing two pieces on a main instrument and one on each additional instrument/voice, plus aural tests, sight-reading and scales. Full details of the requirements are available from our website. Preliminary auditions with the Director of Music are strongly advised.

13+ SPORT SCHOLARSHIPS Canford has a fine reputation for sport and successes are evident across inter-school fixtures and competitions along with regular County, Regional and National representation. National selection in Rowing, Netball, Rugby, Cricket, Hockey, Athletics and Sailing have been commonplace in recent years and the sports programmes are overseen by an outstanding group of coaches. Sport Scholars at Canford should be willing to express themselves in their sport, explore their athletic abilities and excel with the highest standards of performance and behaviours.
WHAT WE OFFER Sport is considered a central part of co-curricular life and Canford offers a wide variety of activities to choose from. The school possesses excellent facilities, including a sports centre complete with indoor 25m pool, double sports hall, fitness suite and Strength and Conditioning gym, two floodlit artificial surfaces, multiple hard tennis/ netball courts, a 9 hole golf course and an original Real tennis court. The Sport Scholars’ Programme contains elements common to all alongside activities for specific year groups. It is designed to ensure that these pupils are equipped with every opportunity to achieve their highest goals. It aims to provide a pathway which enables scholars to fulfil their sporting potential within a professional and supportive framework. Shells/Fourths/Fifths: New Shells are given some time to settle into the Canford environment. As their first term unfolds they will meet with their staff scholar mentor to talk through the year ahead. Information about physical wellbeing, balance and coaching will be implemented and monitored through regular meetings. Strength and Conditioning and essential physical literacy are introduced to ensure that correct techniques are executed, alongside advice on diet and nutrition. Functional screening is done under the guidance of Canford’s newly appointed Head of Wellbeing and Physiotherapy and is reviewed and monitored accordingly. As the scholars move into the Fourth Form they have more opportunities to work on their Strength and Conditioning Programmes which can be tailored to the individual. Scholars also have the opportunity to explore weekly yoga and pilates which help and highlight the importance of reducing the chance of injury, assist

in growth related changes and improve performance. Fifth Form pupils continue the programme outlined previously, with more sporting options available, but also have the opportunity to look to create their own Individual Development Plan (IDP) with help from their staff mentor. They will also have some interaction and exposure to training and playing at the senior levels. Sixth Form: Sport Scholars in the senior years continue to receive an individual mentor and a working IDP to ensure that balance is maintained as academic and sporting demands increase. Tailoring also increases, with more specialised training programmes available for each scholar, individualised one-to-one technical and tactical clinics. There is experienced support in place for those scholars wishing to pursue a university scholarship or National sport representation. CORE COMPONENTS Wide participation across a breadth of sports is beneficial for long term success and wellbeing. Sport Scholars are initially expected to participate in a broad range of other sports too. Within physical wellbeing, a Strength and Conditioning Programme will be devised introducing the Shell scholars to a range of essential and fundamental movement patterns which progresses through to a tailored physical development programme. Under the umbrella of wellbeing, rehabilitation and pre-habilitation are crucial parts of the programme. Sport Scholars will have the opportunity to attend weekly sessions where strategies to reduce injury are implemented with specific focus on pre, during and post training and match nutrition, hydration, sleep and recovery. Scholars are encouraged to follow recommended guidelines without the need for dietary supplementation (food first approach). Balance Canford has close working relationships with local sporting clubs and support players who represent clubs while still at school. Programmes are drawn up for scholars to enable Regional and National training sessions during term time. Good communication between all parties is the aim so that Sport Scholars are therefore able to balance achieving their sporting goals while still receiving an outstanding academic education.
Coaching Sport Scholars are supported by an experienced and talented team of sport coaches, encouraging the scholar to reach individual goals and targets. Scholars are closely monitored but also given the independence to take control of their learning and progression. The Canford sports staff are regularly supplemented by external highly qualified coaches across a range of sports.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR Prospective Sport Scholars should already be a prominent member of their school or club team with the potential and willingness to learn and improve. They should lead from the front with their actions and display stand out qualities in all aspects of school life. We are looking for good people, not just good performers. We would expect our Sport Scholars to: •
Represent the school teams wherever possible with consideration given to individual pupil needs

FORMAT Sport Scholarship assessments for 13+ are held at Canford over a day in late January/early February. Candidates at 13+ are ideally expected to offer two sports in addition to completing a series of physical assessments and informal interview. Sports should ideally be in the core team sports played at Canford (Cricket, Rugby, Hockey and Netball) but it is possible to choose from other sports. For 16+ candidates the assessments are held in the November preceding the September entry. Candidates at 16+ may choose to be assessed in one sport in which they have chosen to begin to specialise. Priority will be given to candidates offering sports played as core team sports (Cricket, Rugby, Hockey and Netball) at the school.
COBDEN PIKE GOLF AWARD As a result of a special bequest, in addition to the standard Sport Scholarships, the Cobden Pike Golf Award is available for entrants for Sixth Form who are talented golfers and would require means-tested financial assistance. These awards can be worth up to 40% of the school fees, with means-tested bursaries potentially taking this to 100% of fees. As a guide, potential applicants would have a maximum handicap of 6 and also need to satisfy the school’s academic entry requirements.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE (BURSARIES)
We offer a number of different scholarships for boys and girls joining Canford in the Sixth Form.
All Canford’s scholarships are indexed as a percentage of the fees so that their relative value remains constant throughout the scholar’s school career.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR As with our 13+ scholarships, our Sixth Form scholars will have the personality, ambition and enthusiasm to become leaders among their peers in their particular field. We want to see dedicated commitment to their talent, a positive work ethic and a strong record of success. In return scholars will have the opportunity to make a real difference to both the Sixth Form and the wider school community. We will offer our Sixth Form scholars the support and specialist 1-1 guidance to reach for the stars and achieve their goals, academically, in co-curricular life and in their further education.

FORMAT Sixth Form scholarships are held in November of the year before admission. The results are announced in the first week of December after the examinations. Candidates may enter separately for any combination of Canford’s Sixth Form scholarships.

This is only available to pupils seeking to board and the discount would be applied first, with any scholarships awarded calculated on the net fee. THE DONALD DEAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Each year we will give one substantial award to one local day pupil entering Canford at Year 9 whose family is unable to pay the fees. The award is worth up to 120% of day school fees. Applicants need to fulfil the normal academic entry requirements. Above this, we look for talent in any particular area together with a positive and purposeful attitude. Dr Donald Dean attended a grammar school and university and was a passionate supporter of quality education. In his will he left a wish that his estate be used for charitable purposes. The school is most grateful to Dr Dean’s family for their generosity in supporting pupils who would otherwise not have the opportunity of a Canford education.
