But at UMBC, smart students know that summer is the time to catch up, get ahead, and stay on track to graduate. With more than 400 courses offered, there’s something for everyone. Collaborate in a hands-on science lab, take a pre-requisite course, or knock out a graduation requirement. Visiting students can take classes at UMBC for a single semester, and earn credits that transfer back to their home institution. Get a jump start on fall during the “Dawg” Days of Summer at UMBC! Summer Session 2013

A dmissions & R egistration Summer session is for current UMBC students, new incoming students, visiting students, and even highly motivated high school students! Catch up or get ahead, focus on a challenging course, and make the most of your summer break at UMBC. Summer classes are offered at UMBC’s main campus and at UMBC at The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville. For more information, including details on how to apply and register, and help with parking, paying your bills, purchasing textbooks, and what to do on campus, see umbc.edu/summer.

Current UMBC Students Current UMBC students can register for summer session when registration begins on March 25. No application is needed if you are enrolled part-time or full-time in spring 2013. Advising is recommended, but not required. Summer session is a great opportunity for students to focus on required courses, without the distractions of the regular semester.

Incoming Students (Fall 2013) If you’ve already been admitted to UMBC for fall 2013 as a new full-time or part-time student, get a head start by taking classes this summer. Earn credits and stay on track for your major. Learn your way around campus while classes are smaller, and the pace is more relaxed. New student advising is highly recommended before you register. Contact the Office of Academic & Pre-Professional Advising for assistance. To enroll in summer session, contact Undergraduate Admissions and request a first semester start date change from fall to summer.

5 A dmissions & R egistration

Visiting Students

Pre-College Students

If you attend another college or university but live in the area, make the most of your time at home and take summer classes at UMBC. UMBC’s nationally regarded curriculum makes it easy to transfer credits back to your home institution.

If you are a highly motivated high school student ready to take on the challenges of rigorous academic course work, you can get a jump-start on college this summer at UMBC.

Many visiting students capitalize on UMBC’s outstanding reputation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines. Learn about Summer STEM at UMBC, and UMBC’s active-learning approach to STEM education on pages 12-13.

You’ll need to meet early admissions requirements, and get permission from your high school before you apply. Contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office, and ask to speak to an admissions counselor about UMBC’s pre-college academic admission requirements for exceptional high school students.

To apply and register as a single term visiting student: Verify that credits earned at UMBC will transfer back to your home institution. Check the summer website for individual course pre-requisite requirements. While official transcripts are not required for admission to summer session, faculty who teach courses with pre-requisite requirements may require an unofficial transcript from your home institution before granting you permission to enroll. Apply to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as a special non-degree-seeking visiting student. You will only be able to enroll in one term (summer 2013) under this admission category. Register once you are notified by email that you’ve been admitted to UMBC. You’ll need to activate your myUMBC account using the campus ID provided by Undergraduate Admissions and register online for classes. More information for visiting students is available at umbc.edu/summer.

Summer Session 2013

R egistration R esources Register online March 25 – May 27 (Summer Session I) and March 25 – July 7 (Summer Session II) through myUMBC. Students assume an academic and financial obligation when registering for summer session courses. You must follow the established university add/drop policies and procedures to ensure enrollment or must terminate enrollment to avoid financial penalties.

Schedule Adjustment Period During the first four days of Session I and II, you can SWAP, ADD, or DROP a course without financial penalty. Session I Schedule Adjustment: May 28 – May 31 Session II Schedule Adjustment: July 8 - July 11 Swap During the schedule adjustment period, you can swap a course for another course (for the same number of credits) without financial or academic penalty. Swapping allows you to simultaneously add and drop through myUMBC. The course you want to drop will not be removed from your schedule until you are successfully enrolled in the added course. If the new class has already met, check with the instructor before swapping a class to verify that you can make up any missed course work. Add Although you can still add a course during the first four days of the session, it may be difficult to catch up on course work missed once classes begin. To add a course after the session begins, first check with the instructor to verify that you can make up any missed course work. If you add courses during the schedule adjustment period, a non-refundable $20 late registration fee is billed to your student account (see page 8). Drop If you drop a course during the schedule adjustment period and don’t replace it with another course, you will receive a pro-rated financial refund based on the date you dropped the course (see page 8). Courses dropped after the four day schedule adjustment period will reflect a grade of “W” on your transcript.

Schedule Changes after Schedule Adjustment Period After the four-day schedule adjustment period, you can no longer use myUMBC to make schedule adjustments, except to drop a course until the following deadline dates: Session I

Session II

7 R egistration R esources Withdrawal from Summer Session

Independent Study Courses

The only way to drop courses after the deadline dates on page 6 is to withdraw from summer session (i.e., drop all courses in the session). Submit a myUMBC help ticket to the Registrar’s Office requesting a “session withdrawal.” A “session withdrawal” notation will appear on your transcript. (See page 2 for semester withdrawal deadline dates.)

Academic departments schedule independent study summer courses on an “as needed” basis and with the approval of a faculty member who oversees the course. Contact the appropriate academic department before the final day to register to request independent study courses in summer session.

Summer Course Load Students can enroll in up to eight credits per session (maximum 16 total credits in summer). In some special cases, approval is granted to students who need to enroll in more than eight credits per session. To request an exception to the credit limit, download and submit a Request to Enroll for Excess Credit form (located at umbc.edu/summer).

Waitlists Most instructors will permit students to place themselves on a waitlist once a course reaches capacity and closes. If seats open in a closed class, eligible students on the waitlist will be automatically enrolled in the class according to their position on the waitlist. For more information about waitlists, visit umbc.edu/summer.

Repeat Courses Students may not register for a course more than two times. You are considered registered for a course if you are enrolled after the end of the schedule adjustment period. In some special cases, approval is granted to register for a third and final attempt of a course taken at UMBC or another institution. Students seeking approval for a third and final attempt of a course must petition the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) before registering. Download and submit the Course Repeat Petition form (located at umbc.edu/summer) to OUE no later than May 14 for Summer Session I, or June 24 for Summer Session II.

This Summer: Make it Count

Summer STEM at UMBC is an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to science, engineering and math education for UMBC and visiting students. Taking STEM classes in the summer can keep you on track to complete your degree and help prepare you for the fall semester. With a coordinated sequence of lecture and lab courses offered in condensed four, six and eight week sessions, many students can complete their core STEM requirements in just two summers. Since many courses are transferable, visiting students from other institutions can also earn credits toward their degree. And at UMBC, you’ll have a world-class learning experience with dedicated and engaged faculty who value research, active learning, collaboration and discovery. UMBC has earned a national reputation for its innovative culture, commitment to undergraduate research and excellence in STEM education. UMBC’s President, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III, is nationally recognized for his leadership in science and mathematics. His commitment to academic success has revolutionized UMBC’s approach to STEM education for undergraduates. Experience Summer STEM at UMBC and you’ll see why we’ve been named “one of America’s most innovative colleges” by U.S. News and World Report for four years running. You’ll be amazed by what you can discover in a summer.

Summer is the perfect time for students to explore the area’s attractions, from Baltimore’s bustling Inner Harbor to Washington D.C.’s famed monuments. Automatic Controls (3) Ready to get a head start on your college experience? Kick things off this summer with UMBC’s Collegiate Success Institute (CSI) Summer Bridge Program. In six weeks, you’ll earn credits, make new friends and ease into campus life. The CSI program blends academics, mentoring, self-discovery and social activities to help prepare students for success at UMBC. Choose from a selection of courses that meet graduation requirements and earn 4-7 credits in the summer. Structured study time and peer mentoring help students learn how to succeed academically and boost self-confidence before fall classes begin. Between classes, CSI students have the opportunity to get to know the area through social activities, trips to Baltimore and Washington D.C. and community service projects. For more information, visit umbc.edu/oue/ csi or contact Laila Shishineh, Assistant Director – First Year Experience, at lailams@umbc.edu or 410-455-3737. The CSI Program is sponsored by UMBC’s Office of Undergraduate Education.

“Incoming students should apply for CSI because they come into college with some credits, they make a lot of new friends, and they get to learn their way around campus.” – Angie Norton, Chemical Engineering

Pro Tools Certification Training at UMBC July 15 – 17, 2013 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. UMBC offers certification training in leading audio production software, Pro Tools, and is offering a Pro Tools 101 course during Summer Session II. The non-credit training is led by UMBC Assistant Professor David Revill, an accomplished audio producer and Pro Tools expert. Course curriculum is designed for individuals wishing to enhance their knowledge of and experience with audio production for music, film and video post-production and game audio. The course focuses on Pro Tools software, functions and feature enhancements, providing participants with the basic skills to succeed with Pro Tools, from initial set-up to final production. “Even as a relatively seasoned Pro Tools user, I have learned countless things that have improved my workflow. The best part was David’s knowledge; He was able to address any questions that sprang out of the curriculum.” – Recent UMBC Pro Tools Training Participant. Find out more at: umbc.edu/protools
