This week... From the editor Earlier this week, Macquarie Dictionary announced its word of the year as “doomscrolling” – the practice of continually scrolling news feeds, despite the news being predominantly negative and often unsettling. From Black Summer bushfires and hailstorms to a global pandemic, Chinese sanctions and the Brereton report, I admit to doing my share of doomscrolling in 2020. Back in April, my early call for word of the year was “pivot”, which has been applied to almost anybody or thing that’s had to adapt during the pandemic – e.g. schools and teachers pivoted to online teaching, students and families pivoted to online learning, organisations pivoted to remote working, hospitality businesses pivoted to takeaway, distilleries pivoted to manufacturing sanitiser … you get my drift. And while it’s all very well to pivot in a pandemic, it’s still been a bit of a lottery as to whether your business has flourished or floundered in 2020 – real estate, bicycle and grocery sales in Canberra have prospered, “non-essential” retail and events have struggled. So, if you’re planning to spend money over the summer, please consider splashing some of it locally. Reasons to be grateful this week include the joy the Canberra Symphony Orchestra performing live at Llewellyn Hall, celebrating festive food, fun and friendship at Tammy’s annual Thanksgiving Day lunch, and the Canberra Hospital Foundation’s fabulous CAN Give Day Live fundraiser. - Julie Samaras

news A different looking Canberra summer While the summer season in the ACT might usually be the city’s liveliest time, a growing list of events continues to be altered or cancelled due to COVID-19. From the cancellation of New Year’s Eve fireworks and Australia Day celebrations, to the postponement of the National Multicultural Festival, the Territory’s hottest months are going to look a little different this time. New Year’s Eve: NYE celebrations are among the ACT’s big events to pivot, replacing the usual countdown and fireworks with three nights of celebrating Canberra’s best local eats. The ACT Government initiative is encouraging Canberrans to book a table at a local restaurant from 29 to 31 December with pop-up musical performances staged around the city on NYE. Further details about this event are set to be announced in coming weeks. Summernats: Announced in late September, the iconic annual Summernats festival has been delayed until 2020; a reduced capacity Rev Rock ‘n’ Roll event will be held in March 2021. Usually held in early January, the event was postponed due to its venue, Exhibition Park (EPIC), being used as a COVID-19 testing facility. Rev Rock ‘n’ Roll will be scheduled at EPIC

from 5 to 7 March 2021 with a maximum of 5,000 spectators. Australia Day: The ACT Government have announced no fireworks will go ahead as part of Australia Day celebrations in the Capital. There is no information about the annual Australia Day concert; however, more information on the event is due to be released in January. National Multicultural Festival: Canberra’s annual multicultural festival, which regularly attracts over 200,000 spectators to the city centre across three days, has also been added to the list of postponed events. Usually taking place in February, organisers have decided to postpone the event in the hope of retaining the original feel of the festival. Event organisers are set to announce more information in the New Year. Royal Canberra Show: On 30 November, Show organisers made the disappointing announcement the event has been cancelled for the first time in over 70 years. The ACT Government’s latest COVID-19 restrictions state no events of more than 5,000 people can go ahead, putting the event’s usual crowd of 50,000 spectators and 25,000 competitors off the table.

Organisers of the National Multicultural Festival, usually held in February, have decided to postpone the event in 2021. File image.

Organisers are hoping sponsors and spectators will jump back on board in support of the event in 2022. National Folk Festival: Organisers announced the cancellation of the 2021 event in October, after this year’s event, scheduled over the Easter long weekend (9-13 April), was cancelled due to COVID. The event is said to be returning to EPIC in 2022. Enlighten Festival: Enlighten Festival will return to the national capital during 2021, holding COVIDsafe events across 17 days from 26 February. Five events will run, including illuminations throughout the Parliamentary Triangle, a short film festival screening, and Symphony in the Park. These events are free, but will be ticketed to ensure numbers are COVID-safe.

Community concerns over potential algal blooms at Acton The proposed Acton Waterfront at West Basin is meant to be a vibrant cultural and entertainment precinct on a lakeside promenade – but a community group fears that it could be an ecological hazard instead. The ACT Government acquired 2.8 hectares of federal land at West Basin in March. Work began in September to realign the lake edge and build 500 metres of boardwalk. According to the Government, the new lake edge will be consistent with architect Walter Burley Griffin’s original plan connecting the city centre and the lake. But the Lake Burley Griffin Guardians – a voluntary group established in 2015 to protect the lake – believe the development could create a toxic blue-green algal bloom that would threaten fish and wildlife. Silt fences have been installed within the worksite on the lake edge and in the lake to prevent run-off or contamination which can contribute to algae growth, an ACT Government spokesperson stated. They said these silt fences are inspected at least once each week and immediately after 10

canberraweekly.com.au

heavy rainfall. But the Guardians worry that the silt fences are ineffectual. West Basin waters, they say, have become muddied and discoloured from lakebed disturbance and turbulence, despite the double row of silt curtains. Nor did silt curtains installed in the East Basin during the Kingston Foreshore works in 2009 prevent one of the worst blue-green algae blooms in the lake’s history, Guardians convener Juliet Ramsay said. She worries that algae growth in West Basin could be even worse because it is a backwater, with poor water flow, while the Molonglo River flowed past Kingston Foreshore. The Guardians are also concerned that the soft lake edge mix of planted species, weeds, beech trees and rocks – habitat for native species – has been destroyed. The hard edge replacement, they believe, will result in reduced water purification. “The purifying plants that were planted on the edge of West Basin have all gone now, along with the trees,” Ms Ramsay said. “These things are very damaging for wildlife. There’s a lot more turbidity in the water, which encourages nitrogen growth

and damage. That encourages bacterial growth that dies and create this toxicity.” The ACT Government, however, classifies the area as having only a low level of environmental importance. Before work began, the National Capital Authority, ACT Government, and the City Renewal Authority commissioned independent experts to conduct environmental studies, which are reviewed regularly. “There is no evidence of any significant or important wildlife habitat or endangered species in the area which is designated for the project,” the spokesperson said. The Government states that the new Acton Waterfront, its public spaces, and foreshore will provide new habitats for wildlife, including waterbirds. Environmental consultants inspect the worksite each month to ensure environmental protection measures are maintained and effective, and to check for wildlife. All workers are briefed about environmental issues, and how to manage and minimise impacts; work on site will stop if any threatened species are found. - Nick Fuller

news Decommissioned bus shelter finds new home Over the span of a few days late last week, Canberra Concrete Recyclers co-owner Ian Oliver’s phone was blowing up with offers on a Clem Cummings bus shelter that he’d personally saved from the scrap heap. The shelter had been dropped off to Canberra Concrete Recyclers for demolition by an ACT Government contractor, having been removed from its previous home on Ginninderra Drive, Dunlop, following a traffic collision. “When this bus shelter came about, I thought there is no way on my conscience I could see this crushed,” Mr Oliver told Canberra Weekly. After a few months, he made a call to the man who put Canberra’s bus shelters back on the map, Newcastlebased artist, Trevor Dickinson. Mr Dickinson briefly posted an

ad for the shelter across social media with Mr Oliver’s phone number, which saw him fielding offers “left, right and centre”. After contemplating the logistics of handing the nine-tonne shelter to a buyer, Mr Oliver decided he’d keep the shelter on site by the weighbridge as a “smoko hut”, souvenir and talking point. “We’re saving it, people might have seen that little ad of it being for sale,” he said. “Whilst we received offers, we put it to one side … We didn’t want to see somebody hurt themselves putting it in their yard.” As a lifetime member of the National Trust of Australia, in addition to collecting souvenirs and vintage cars, Mr Oliver has a strong sense of history, which in part motivated him

to hold onto the shelter. “If you ask me, I say they’re great, they’re very iconic for Canberra,” he said. “We’re seeing Canberra change pretty radically these days … We’re a new city and heritage is going quickly. I’m opposed to anything being demolished that shouldn’t be.” Having operated from their Pialligo site under a flight path adjacent to the Canberra Airport since 1992, Canberra Concrete Recyclers produce “about a quarter

of a million tonnes” of recycled building material every year, with roughly 200 trucks passing through each day. “It comes in in the form of building waste, concrete or asphalt and is then reprocessed into building materials,” Mr Oliver said. “We’re a true recycler, we pick, we pull waste material out of waste and currently send building waste to Veiola’s massive (landfill) site near Tarago … 300 tonnes per week.” - Denholm Samaras

The Red Hill Primary School community prides itself on its innovation. So when COVID put a stop to its original 60th birthday celebrations, a slew of talented students, parents and alumni stepped in to capture its rich history in a book, Open hearts, Inquiring minds: Celebrating 60 years of Red Hill Primary School. The author, Emma Campbell, a former Australian War Memorial historian and mum of two current Red Hill students, collated the responses from a past and present student survey into a historical document. The current cohort of students were able to compete for the backcover art with their own picture depicting their love of their school. Emma’s husband and Walkley

Award winning cartoonist Pat Campbell designed the front cover. Fellow P & C members helped Emma with research, and a parent/ employee at the National Library of Australia was on hand to dig through the school archives. Emma said the school tentacles reached far and wide. “We have so many clever, intelligent, expert people and so to be able to draw on their efforts and expertise has been really useful,” she said. “We like to think it’s a really lovely souvenir in what’s been a really challenging year.” Open hearts, Inquiring minds: Celebrating 60 years of Red Hill Primary School is on sale at the Red Hill supermarket for $19; all proceeds go back to the school.

news Poor e-scooter parking poses a potential hazard While rental e-scooters have proved a hit across Canberra – one provider has already clocked over 100,000 trips – the community is being reminded of their obligation to park e-scooters appropriately. Vision Australia are prompting Canberrans to be considerate of those who are vision impaired, and anyone with limited mobility, when their trip is up, as e-scooters left obscuring footpaths and entryways pose a potential hazard. Kendra Wells, Vision Australia Canberra regional client services manager, told Canberra Weekly she has been concerned by the number of e-scooters she has noticed being left in the way. “It’s really difficult for our clients to know they are there,” she said. “I’ve seen them in front of ramps,

in front of stairs and around corners so people can’t see them. “They’re not actually easy to move then when they’re stopped.” While Ms Wells hasn’t yet received a report of a vision impaired person suffering injury from a poorly parked e-scooter, she believed such an incident is “imminent”. “I live with low vision myself so I guess I can see the danger,” she said. For Ms Wells, it’s important the community is aware of the danger poorly parked e-scooters pose not just for vision impaired people, but others with limited mobility too. “If people just could take care to put them to the side so they’re not across pathways or in people’s walkways,” she said. ACT Government permit conditions for rental e-scooter

businesses prohibit the vehicles being left or parked predominantly in areas used by the vision impaired. A Transport Canberra and City Services spokesperson told Canberra Weekly that up until 30 November, ACT Government City Rangers have needed to respond to only six complaints relating to e-scooters since the scheme began. “This is in part because the e-scooters are all GPS-connected and operators are quick to move e-scooters that are parked in areas where they should not be,” they said. Spokespersons for Canberra’s two rental e-scooter providers, Beam and Neuron, told Canberra Weekly

they take parking compliance “very seriously”. Both providers work closely with businesses to resolve issues, which can include establishing no parking zones when requested to prevent scooters from being parked or setting up preferred parking stations to encourage patronage at their venues. Through their apps, they encourage and disincentivise riders to park in specific locations. They also require an end of the trip photo that can be audited to ensure the e-scooter is parked correctly. news Canberra lights up to eliminate gender-based violence Canberra landmarks have turned orange from 25 November to 10 December to draw attention to family and domestic violence. The Zonta Club of Canberra Breakfast – the local branch of an international women’s empowerment group – launched its Zonta Says NO campaign last week, part of 16 days of global activism against gender-based violence. To date, 45 women in Australia alone have died this year because of violence at the hands of a partner or other family member. Crisis services report that the number of people seeking help has also increased this year, as coronavirus, social isolation, and lack of freedom of movement have escalated violence. In the ACT, more than 300 new clients sought help from the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) between March and April. “Domestic violence is across all

sections of our community,” DVCS interim CEO Glenda Stevens said. “It does not discriminate on grounds of socioeconomic status, on income, on cultural group.” The Zonta campaign began on Wednesday 25 November, the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. To raise awareness of gender-based violence, Zonta and the ACT Government have illuminated light rail stops, the Canberra Centre water fountain, and the Malcolm Fraser Bridge in orange. Orange-themed floral exhibits have been installed in the Civic and Dickson libraries, each flower representing one of the dead victims of domestic violence. The Zonta campaign ends on International Human Rights Day, Thursday 10 December. On that day, the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell in Nara Park will be rung 45 times to

commemorate those women who died over the past year due to family and domestic violence, Ms Bird explained. It will also ring once for the male victims. The ceremony is deeply moving and sobering, Ms Bird said. ACT Government representatives and Senator David Smith MP are expected to attend, while musician Riley Lee will play his Japanese flute (shakuhachi). The event is jointly organised by Zonta and the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin, and runs from 6.30am to 8.30am on 10 December. The event is free, but numbers are limited due to COVD19. Book online through Humanitix (https://events.humanitix.com/zontasays-no-canberra-rotary-peace-bellringing); attendees can also donate to the DVCS. Yvette Berry, Minister for Women

and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, said the 16 Days were an opportunity to get people thinking about how the community can reduce and ultimately eliminate domestic violence and violence against women. DVCS is sharing short stories on its social media platform about women working in the ACT who promote the elimination of violence against women. In partnership with ANU, DVCS has online training videos about domestic, family and sexual violence, how to respond to disclosure, and what to do as a bystander. DVCS encourages anyone who believes they may be experiencing domestic or family violence – whether as victim, perpetrator or witness – to phone their crisis line on 6280 0900, and talk to a counsellor. Calling is free, anonymous, and nonjudgemental. - Nick Fuller

news New tech to help older Canberrans age at home As families across the country look for ways to help their elderly relatives maintain independence at home, a practical technology about to hit the ACT market offers a solution. InteliCare relies on a system of motion sensors placed around the home, and CEO Jason Waller described it as “a way of preserving independence” amongst older Australians. “There isn’t a family in Australia that isn’t affected by this,” he said. “Often, we make decisions based on emotions and fear, not facts and data, and often the data points to [the older person] being able to stay home.” Mr Waller said pendants and duress systems were old technology, and 80% of people who had pendants didn’t use them in an emergency. After installation, InteliCare

gathers data about the daily household routine, without video cameras or microphones. The homeowner gives formal permission to a friend, family member or carer to install the smartphone app and receive notifications if there’s a significant deviation from routine, so they can check in as soon as possible. InteliCare will be available in the ACT through not-for-profit charity Technology for Ageing and Disability ACT (TADACT), with support from community foundation Hands Across Canberra and the Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund. CEO Julie Lobel said InteliCare also had great practicality for people living with other health concerns like diabetes, cardiac issues, physical disabilities, and early onset dementia. Ms Lobel said it offered families

and carers greater peace of mind by sending an ‘All OK’ notification each morning or picking up if something was out of the ordinary. “They might think, ‘Hmm, she hasn’t made a cup of tea. She hasn’t been moving in the bathroom. And the fridge hasn’t opened. What’s going on?’ “So it’s a little bit pre-emptive as well, without being invasive, which is quite unique to most systems as well.” TADACT community engagement manager Trudy Taylor said the new technology offered older people a greater sense of independence and

privacy because it meant fewer people interrupting them throughout the day, and the sensors unobtrusively blend in with their environment. “It just means it’s a quick glimpse on your phone, rather than having to call or drive over there,” she said. “So I think the system is just a different way of approaching caring for people and allowing them to be in their homes for just a little bit longer - at their own pace and under their own terms.” Visit canberraweekly.com.au for an extended version of this story. - Rosa Ritchie

news Paws for thought: ‘adopt, don’t shop’ this Christmas Giving a second chance of happiness, spending less money and bragging rights are some of the benefits RSPCA ACT are reminding Canberrans of when it comes to adopting, not shopping, a pet. Christmas can be a busy time for the organisation, and while impulse pet shopping is not encouraged, if you are ready to commit to a furry friend, adopting a rescue is recommended. RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson said it is important to consider a number of factors before jumping in headfirst. “The most important is you must be ready to commit. You commit for the life of that pet, it’s not

With around 4,000 animals expected through its shelter this year, RSPCA ACT is urging anyone considering buying a pet to adopt a rescue animal instead.

an impulse decision, it’s something you really need to think about,” she said. “The choice of your pet needs to fit with your lifestyle and, depending on your lifestyle, that could be a cat or fish, or it might be a specific breed of dog.” Nationally, RSPCA took in over 110,000 animals this year, which have been lost or strays, surrendered or seized. The ACT branch estimate they will take in 4,000 animals to its shelter, receive 2,000 animal cruelty complaints and prepare 150,000 pet meals next year. Ms Robertson said despite common misconception, these animals don’t end up in the shelter through any fault of their own. “In terms of what we see at the shelter, animals are victims of human circumstances,” she said. “They end up in shelters not because of what they did or didn’t do but because of the humans who are supposed to care for them.” Currently there are 325 animals in care at RSPCA ACT, not all of which are ready for adoption yet but soon will be.

Ms Robertson said in her experience, she found people mostly shopped for pets when they were after a specific breed and timeframe. However, she said having a little more patience meant RSPCA may be able to help you on this journey. “Anecdotally, things we see that could be contributing to people wanting to shop is they are looking for a specific breed or they are not prepared to wait,” she said. “There are so many benefits to adopting but it means you have to be patient. We don’t know day to day what animals will come in, but we may be able to provide it in six months’ time.” Ms Robertson urged those looking to shop a pet to do so responsibly. “There are huge issues with over breeding, unethical practices, not in all instances but there could be, so shop from a reputable organisation to ensure you are taking a stance against that,” she said. news Summernats: it’s not just about the car There are few people in Canberra who have not heard of the annual Summernats festival, usually held in Canberra in early January. The first festival was held in 1988 and Summernats is now one of the bestknown car festivals in Australia. The festival has set not only records for car entries but also attendances, with about 100,000 people from around the country and the world attending the four-day event. Summernats has not been without its detractors, but love or hate the festival, it not only generates over $30 million each year for the Canberra economy, it also highlights the rapidly growing aftermarket automotive industry both in Australia and internationally. The Summernats festival was sold to Andy Lopez and two other partners

ACT Chief Minister’s Export Awards 2020

in 2009 and their focus was on building the brand into one of the world’s best-known car festivals. Over the past 10 years, the business has grown to include a suite of festivals around Australia, as well as partnerships in New Zealand and the US. It generates increasing financial returns through international and domestic tourism and is supported by a gaming app, Burnout Masters, with well over 1.5 million downloads worldwide and online merchandising. Summernats is so much more than a car festival for ‘petrol heads’. The festival is for the passionate car enthusiast who is obsessed with the idea of creating that perfect car. To put the potential size of the Summernats market in context, the Australian aftermarket automotive parts sector is worth over US$11

billion per year and is growing rapidly. Worldwide, this market is worth more than US$375 billion and is expected to grow at about 4% per year over the next decade. Passionate car collectors, restorers and exhibitors support this market. What does Summernats look like now? Andy says that they have not for a moment regretted buying Summernats and the team has had a great time running the event since. The company currently employs nine people who work full and part time. To date, they have added three new festivals to the portfolio. An annual event in Alice Springs is coming up to its seventh year. Delivered in partnership with the NT Government, Red CentreNATS brings around a $1011 million economic impact into Alice Springs each year. A new event will be delivered for the Rockhampton Regional Council in Queensland called Rockynats. “This was scheduled for June this year but is being pushed out to April 2021 Easter long weekend. Car entries sold out months before the event and tickets have been fabulous,” says Andy. The other event that has been added to the portfolio is an event called MotorEX, which is a business-to-consumer show. “We have partnered with the SEMA Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) in the US. The aim of this partnership is to work with Australian businesses to showcase their products to American automotive industry, and vice versa,” says Andy. “We have a lot of producers and distributors in Australia which are

very dependent on the American market, particularly the specialty aftermarket stuff. The US market for this is massive.” says Andy. The exporting side of things The company has really only been focusing on exports for the last three or four years. “Our understanding of export was really about taking our culture to the US market and trying to create inbound tourism back into Australia. That was our first idea about export and we had some reasonable success,” says Andy. He says “it is still too early to determine the impact on sales from the MotorEX events because we don’t have enough data yet”. However, based on market observations, Andy says that there is clearly a more united Australian presence in the market – a strong central narrative is developing. While it’s not all due to their involvement, getting SEMA to engage with Australian businesses has clearly had an impact. “Having that commonality – allowing businesses to talk about their products in a real live application is a big thing,” he says. “There is a company is Australia, for example called Rare Spares and they export parts. The biggest Holden owners club in the world outside of Australia is actually in Indonesia. While not many people take this market seriously it is in fact a multi-billiondollar industry. A story of resilience and ingenuity – celebrating Canberra and region exporters

D

id you know that one of the world’s leading companies in the delivery of healthcare solutions in any setting is

based here in Canberra? Aspen Medical, the 2018 Australian Exporter of the Year, rolled out over 150 respiratory clinics around Australia in response to the Covid pandemic alone and significant volumes of Australia’s PPE for the National Medical Stockpile. They have delivered online training courses on behalf of the Department of Health to 2.6 million people around the country and have managed quarantine for thousands of people in Australia, Japan and the US. Canberra exporters punch well above their weight and, last week, 150 companies who export goods and services to overseas markets came together to celebrate their achievements and the contribution they make to our local economy. Access to international markets is the key to growth, and job creation. Supporting international trade is a critical activity for the Canberra Business Chamber and the ACT Government, supporting the economic diversity that is critical to the Canberra economy, businesses and our region. The ACT Export Awards are normally about judging, finalists and awards, but exporting, like other aspects of life, was heavily disrupted by Covid. This year, we focussed instead on the journey that these businesses have taken, engaging directly with companies, and bringing them together to discuss the challenges of 2020 and to share their strategies for surviving and thriving into the future. Our cyber-tech companies are exporting state-of-the-art Canberramade technology to the rest of the world. Liquid Instruments “Moku:Lab”, for example, replaces 12 precision laboratory instruments with a single multifunctional device. The Canberra side outclassed Bendigo 87-51. So far, the UC Caps have only lost one of eight games played this season, against the Adelaide Lightening in the season opener. The Caps are still sitting comfortably on top of the 2020 ladder, with the Southside Flyers in second spot. The Caps faced the Melbourne Boomers in Townsville on Tuesday 1 December (results

truffles love to live. Their passion has led to global recognition as an exporter of high-grade truffles to markets around the world. Every Canberran knows Summernats, the car festival held annually in Canberra since 1987. But did you know that the nation’s largest automotive lifestyle event, with 2,000+ modified and performance cars on display, generates an economic return for the ACT of $30m each year and attracts 100,000 national and international visitors. Now Summernats has diversified, with the creation of the Burnout Masters Game APP to enable non-event related export income and promote the event to the world. What do all these businesses have in common? They are all Canberra based, and all working to expand their operations and market reach. They have shown us how to adapt, re-build and create new jobs for our region, and that is something to celebrate as they truly are changing people’s lives and reactivating our economy. - Graham Catt, Chief Executive Officer Canberra Business Chamber

• A fi rm bladder area is the best indicator of a fresh whole fish. Please note that contact with ice can dull the eyes of whole fish, even when very fresh. • Fresh fish should have a pleasant fresh ocean smell. • Never store fillets in direct contact with ice. Always remove packaging, cover and refrigerate. Cook and eat within two days. The fi rmness of uncooked prawns can be an indicator of freshness. However, some species are naturally softer than others. Uncooked prawns should be stored in a bowl of ice and water, in the fridge. The ice and water should be changed daily. Cook and eat within two days. Always defrost fish and seafood in a covered bowl, in the fridge. Cover Oysters and Smoked Trout with wet paper, then seal in a container or with wrap and refrigerate. Caution: Even ‘boneless’ fish may contain bones. Take care before eating and check carefully before feeding to children.

taste

T’is officially the season! We’re winding down for the year with a tipple in hand, and we’ve rounded up some simple ways to elevate your drinks for the party season.

Switch up your spritz with this recipe for a ruby red grapefruit take on the Italian classic. Pampelle spritz 2 parts Pampelle grapefruit aperitif 3 parts prosecco 1 part soda water

While we’d argue that champagne doesn’t need any dressing up, it can be fun to break out of the ordinary sometimes, especially in the silly season!

Add plenty of ice to a large wine glass. Pour in the measured ingredients and lightly stir. Garnish with a wedge of ruby red grapefruit. Recipe courtesy of Pampelle.

If you’re serving champagne in flutes, try a drop of guava nectar and if you’re using coupes or saucers, opt for some edible flowers. For a delicious upgrade to your G&T, try adding a crushed blackberry or two and a sprig of rosemary. Some local distillers to try include Underground Spirits, the Canberra Distillery and Big River Distilling Co. For the non-drinkers, there are some non-alcoholic ‘spirits’ like Lyre and Seedlip that can work in the place of the gin.

For a non-alcoholic cocktail (that you don’t have to make yourself), try local company Altina Drinks.

How to: the perfect cheese board The perfect cheese board should have three things, according to French cheese monger and ambassador for the Bon Fromage Festival of European Cheeses, François Robin. First up, you’ll need a range of cheeses with something for everyone. “Always start with the mildest cheese and finish with the strongest,” François says. “You don’t want to overpower those taste buds first and not be able to taste anything else.” Secondly, it’s important to cut the portions in advance and have your guests follow this – that way no one is left with the rind! And finally, “pack the board with nuts, macadamia, honey, crackers, grapes, dried apples or mangos,” says François, “anything that will encourage people to pair their cheese with other ingredients”. Cheeses to try François’ must-have cheeses for the perfect board include a double-cream brie or BrillatSavarin – “great to highlight black truffle’; Comté, which he says is best aged to around

the 18-24 month mark; a “decadent and runny” Époisses; and Fourme d’Ambert, which, according to François, pairs perfectly with sweet ingredients like pear, jam or gingerbread. A match made in heaven When matching your cheeses to wine, François has a few tips. “Époisses and chardonnay or goats cheese and King’s Valley sauvignon are good matches,” he says. “New World wines are also super pairings.” Most white wines will match well with cheese, especially those that are on the drier side. Red wines will work well with your heavier cheeses; however, if you want to avoid a metallic taste for things like a regular brie, steer clear of full-bodied and oaky reds. “Try fruity red wines instead, like Beaujolais,” François suggests. If you’re a bubbles fan, try a double-cream or a cheese with mild intensity, while sweet wine lovers can’t go wrong with salty cheeses like blue.

That’s arts and entertainment Adamek is well versed in the peak body’s role as an advocacy group; she is keen to promote dance practice “in all its forms”. “One of the roles of Ausdance is to promote effectively the incredible diaspora of dance that goes on, but also here being able to run programs as well,” she said. Since arriving in September, Dr Adamek said she has enjoyed developing a feel for the lay of the land here in the capital. “Every place has their own local colour, and what those grassroots things that have often been developing for decades are, and so that’s always exciting; nothing’s ever the same in any two places. “I can see there are opportunities to harvest some really interesting, innovative and high-quality work. “There’s a massive groundswell of local artists here who are about to step up to that next level; I’m here to be able to help facilitate that.”

Ausdance ACT appoints new director

In late September, Ausdance ACT appointed Dr Cathy Adamek from South Australia as the organisation’s new director. Dr Adamek steps into the Canberra role with a breadth of experience and knowledge, having formerly been president of Ausdance South Australia in a voluntary capacity. “Each Ausdance is quite different depending on which state you’re in; it was a huge asset being able to understand the broad remit of Ausdance as a peak body and as an organisational body too,” she said. Having worked as a performer, choreographer, director and creative producer across theatre, film, TV and radio, Adamek’s credits also include a PhD she completed in 2017. Born out of the desire to put their beautiful Gundaroo vineyard to use while weddings were off the cards earlier this year, Tallagandra Hill’s series of live music events has proved a smashing success since July. Starting out with the wildly popular We Love Local Festival that saw eight gigs performed on weekends from July to September, to date they’ve held 15 gigs – all of which have sold out to capacity. Tallagandra Hill co-owner Dave Faulks said he’s been unable to ignore the overwhelming response they’ve received to their live music. “People have been excited to be getting out and about,” he said. Coming up on Sunday 13 December, Tallagandra Hill’s Rising Star Music Festival will feature three and a half hours of original live music from five emerging Canberra-based artists. Lucy Sugerman, Kim Yang, Lisa Richards, Marty K, and Miss M will each perform a set before all five artists come together for a ‘grand finale’ set that the performers have chosen and curated. “Rising Star was an idea where we wanted to highlight some pretty exceptional musicians, who are not necessarily massively high profile, based in Canberra,” Mr Faulks said. Tim Ross partners with NGA for podcast series

Design enthusiast Tim Ross’ passion for art was seeded by a book gifted to his mother before he was even born – a publication which is now the inspiration behind a new podcast series on the influence of art in our lives, developed in partnership with the National Gallery of Australia. Titled Constant, the five-part series includes interviews with a range of Australian artists plus essays, videos and photo galleries, and is now available via the Gallery’s website. The podcast series tells stories covering the gamut of Australian art, from a discussion with Ben Quilty about Margaret Olley to a digital project inspired by a 1975 collaboration between artist Syd Ball and Split Enz. Ross’ inspiration for Constant is the book Australian Painters of the 70s, published in 1975 and edited by Mervyn Horton. “Dad gave it to Mum as a Mother’s Day gift in 1975 and that little book with its bold graphics and John Coburn painting on the cover somehow struck a chord with me,” he said. “Reading it today, it’s impossible to miss the connections I have made with the artists and their work, how art has become a constant by osmosis. My love of that book has incubated this project.” Tim Ross’ Constant is now available at nga.gov.au/timross

Lucy Sugerman is one of five local performers on the bill at the Rising Star Music Festival at Tallagandra Hill, Gundaroo, on Sunday afternoon, 13 December.

Now showing Happiest Season (M)

Young couple Abby Holland (Kristen Stewart) and Harper Caldwell (Mackenzie Davis) are out on a date when, wrapped up in the moment, Harper invites Abby home for Christmas to meet her family. Halfway to Harper’s family home, however, Harper comes clean and tells Abby that she has not actually come out to her conservative family. Based on writer/director Clea DuVall’s own experiences, Happiest Season’s strength is the excellent chemistry between Stewart and Davis. Absolutely smitten with the Christmas season, the two embark on a journey to Harper’s home and her past, where Abby slowly learns that Harper isn’t all she seems. While Harper conforms back into her familial role with her rivalling siblings, Abby is thrust into the lion’s den, having to act as Harper’s

orphaned college roommate. Forced to put up with Harper’s family and her exes, Abby has an ally in gay best friend John (Dan Levy), who not only (poorly) looks after Abby’s pets while she is away, but offers much needed emotional support during this trying time. Beautifully shot on location in Pittsburgh, the streets, cafes, cinema and bars are cosy and evoke the magic of Christmas. Abby is a fish-out-of-water, struggling to stay afloat in a world of sophisticated dinners and elegant parties where reputation and image is everything. Harper is her lifeline, which is in danger of being severed! Verdict: An utterly charming outing for Stewart and Davis that will melt the coldest of hearts this Christmas season. 5 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Book talk This week, Michael Popple recommends three excellent recent releases to buy this Christmas. More of Michael’s reviews can be found on his blog: unseenlibrary.com The Queen’s Captain by Peter Watt Pan Macmillan, $32.99

With friends in danger and old enemies plotting to kill him, how will the adventure of the Queen’s Colonial end? Australia’s master of the historical fiction novel, Peter Watt, returns with the fi nal book in his Colonial trilogy. This book is jammed full of action and adventure and provides the reader with a thrilling conclusion to this epic historical series.

The Law of Innocence by Michael Connelly Allen & Unwin, $32.99

Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer, is forced to defend his most important client yet, himself. After a body is found in the trunk of his Lincoln, Haller is charged with murder. Forced to plan his own defence from behind bars, Haller needs to fi nd out who framed him and prove it in court. But can even the legendary Lincoln Lawyer win such an impossible case? The latest novel from the always impressive Michael Connelly is an amazing legal thriller that readers can really sink their teeth into. Fun, clever and extremely compelling, this is the perfect gift for any crime fiction lover.

The Tower of Fools by Andrzej Sapkowski Gollancz, $32.99

Fans of The Witcher television series and books will love to receive this intriguing fi rst book in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Hussite trilogy. Set in 15th century Poland, this novel follows Reinmar of Bielawa, a young doctor and magician, who fi nds himself in all manner of trouble with a powerful noble family. Forced to flee into the wilderness, Reinmar becomes caught up in a dangerous conspiracy that could change Europe forever. This exciting novel from Sapkowski combines interesting fantasy elements with key parts of Eastern European history. Good, dirty fun … in the garden

Time spent in the garden is … … Good for your mind Studies have shown that spending time gardening alleviates stress and can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. We know spending time in nature is beneficial (have a look at the research into ‘park bathing’). Whilst spending time in the garden, not only are you surrounded by the plants and fresh air, you have a focus that takes you away from everyday concerns. Similarly, gardening can boost selfesteem. As you plant and water and nurture your garden, you get to see something grow

and thrive. If you can grow a garden, even tend to some pots on your balcony, then who knows what else you’re capable of achieving. … Good for your body Gardening can be hard work but the kind of work your heart likes. Digging, planting and weeding burns calories, moves joints and tones muscles and can provide cardiovascular benefits. Not only that, if you get out early in the morning when the UV index is low, it’s a good time to safely top up your vitamin D levels. … Good for the family Sharing the love of gardens with your kids is a beautiful way to relax and spend time together. Not only that, exposure to dirt helps your microbiome (the same is even true for indoor plants) and can bring immune benefits like reduced allergies. … Good for your community With a network of community gardens dotted

With all the spring rain we had in Canberra, our gardens and parks are as green and lush as I can remember. You may have been out tackling knee-high lawn (or was that just me?) as well as an abundance of weeds that have also flourished since the wettest October for 44 years. If so, you may like to know there is considerable evidence that gardening is good for your health.

With endless options, Christmas trees are the crown jewel of our festive decorations. There is the traditional green tree, either real, artificial or a miniature living tree. For the winter wonderland experience, which requires you to ignore the hemisphere you live in, involving a white tree is always beautiful, or you can opt for a green tree, then spray on fake snow. Why not go full hipster by using alternative materials such as clothes hangers, thongs, or even a vinyl wall sticker? Regardless of tree type, you’ll need a colour scheme, ornament collection, lights, garland or ribbon and a tree topper. Remembering the art is in the placement, these tips will produce the wow factor.

Colour schemes and themes

Green and red or silver and gold mixed metallics are classics, but trending colour schemes include black and emerald green, tiffany blue and white, and rainbow. Make sure your colours match your theme: elegant is about sparkle; simple and rustic or minimalist means showcasing the tree and complementing with earthy tones. If using a feature colour for multiple layers, include a variety of textures such as matte, glitter and shiny metallic to add dimension.

The designer Christmas tree of your dreams

Regardless of tree type, you’ll need a colour scheme, ornament collection, lights, garland or ribbon and a tree topper.

Tree decorating steps

Step 1: If using an artificial tree, the fi rst, least fun, and most essential step is to fluff the tree. Step 2: Add Christmas lights. Advice suggests a minimum of one strand of 100 lights per 30cm. Check the lights are working and fi x any problems before putting them on the tree. All lights should be identical in size, colour and shape. If your tree is green so too should the lighting cords be; if it’s white, the cords should be white. Start from the bottom back of the tree, periodically step back to look at your progress and adjust as needed. Step 3: Choose a garland or ribbon in your colour theme; it’s not recommended to use both. For the garland, start about 1/5th of the way down the top of the tree, run down the tree at an angle, two to three times for a 2m tree and use floral wire to attach or twist the branches together. Using ribbon on your Christmas tree makes it easier to change the look every year. Cut the ribbon into lengths varying from 5-10 cm. Start in the middle of the tree, stick your hands in and feel around for somewhere to attach the ribbon. Billow the ribbon diagonally, bring the centre in and secure the middle of the ribbon inside the tree to form one billowed tuft. Once secured, take the rest of the ribbon back out

and form one more tuft then secure the tail. Start at another place, repeat all over the tree, mixing up the directions. Once the tree is covered consistently and thoroughly, add an accent ribbon. As a rule of thumb, the wider the ribbon, the bigger the loops can be, start with a test piece before you decide your length. Finally, add any busy or patterned ribbon in small quantities. Tips: Don’t pull the ribbon tight against the branches, you don’t want to see a taut wrinkle. When you are billowing, clear the outside branches into a big loop, but not so much it sags. Step 4: Now it’s time to arrange fi llers and ornaments. Fill any gaps with floral pieces, then starting with the largest or most unique, hang ornaments. Repeat with medium then small ornaments; cover any lighting cords, wire, or gaps in your tree. Tip: As a general rule, place smaller ornaments near the top of the tree and larger ones lower down. Step 5: Finally, top the tree. Traditional stars or angels look best when coupled with ribbon or another feature, you can mix it up with a berry or floral piece, DIY sprayed stems and branches or even an old wedding centrepiece. It shouldn’t go right to the top of the tree; this feature looks best a hands-width down from the tip.

property news

Weekly market wrap Lowering of HomeBuilder Grant payments ratchets up pressure to act now The Federal Government has announced an extension of the of HomeBuilder scheme for a further three months to 31 March 2021, however, will lower the payment from $25,000 to $15,000 from 1 January. This will be fantastic news for buyers who have been saving their deposit expecting to miss out on receiving a grant, but ratchets up pressure on the market looking now to act quickly or face a double whammy of paying higher prices and receiving a lower grant amount. As explained in this column previously, the market has a misconception believing they have until 31 December to exchange contracts. While this is not factually incorrect, it fails to account for Christmas holidays starting from 24 December and conveyancing timeframes to exchange contracts currently exceeding three weeks (at best) and often taking over a month. I recently heard the conveyancing process eloquently described as a ‘disaster’ by a very charismatic developer who identified timeframes to exchange contracts had more than doubled in the last few months. New development applications are not offering much in the way of new supply for buyers seeking townhouses. Aside from small sites in greenfield suburbs there is a shortage of new supply coming in early 2021. This part of the market is currently experiencing significant demand, causing some buyers who take time to consider their decision to be disappointed when they contact the agent hours or days later and find out the property has sold. Inability to scale skilled resources in line with higher transaction volumes means conveyancing timeframes may get longer. On

the basis timeframes to exchange contracts remain constant, and allowing for the Christmas shutdown, buyers have only two and a half months to make their decision. Historically there is little new stock released prior to Valentine’s Day (14 February) resulting in now being the best opportunity to choose your new property.

Plenty of heat in the market On Saturday 28 November, Canberra recorded a preliminary auction clearance rate of 74%. This was the second week of the preliminary auction clearance rate moderating to below 80%. Of the 70 reported results, 52 properties sold with a gross sales value of $40,905,600 and median of

$890,000. Individual results indicate plenty of heat in the market demonstrated by a property in Hughes selling for over $2,000,000 and breaking the suburb record. Robust demand across the market saw Canberra property values increase by 1.9% during November, according to CoreLogic’s Monthly Home Values Index. Our median property value of $672,866 now exceeds Melbourne’s at $672,172, as explained why it would in this column on 8 August. Delaying decisions has quickly become an expensive exercise.

Belconnen High School catchment zone in national top 10 in for growth Belconnen High School’s catchment zone is proving popular with home buyers, with house prices in the area recording a 26% increase (year-on-year). The priority enrolment area, which includes Florey, Hawker, Page, Scullin and Weetangera for 2021, was the ninth-highest in Australia, according to Domain’s 2020 school zones report. In the ACT’s top 10, Belconnen High School is followed by Lanyon High School, Hawker College, Erindale College, Lake Tuggeranong College, Gungahlin College, Mount Stromlo High School, UC High School Kaleen, Calwell

High School and Melba Copland Secondary School. Charles Conder Primary School saw the highest growth in the ACT for a primary school, at 23% for the catchment zone which includes Banks, Tharwa and the surrounding rural area and part of Conder. Seven of the top 10 primary schools on the list were from the northside, including Hawker Primary School, Palmerston District Primary School and Neville Bonner Primary School in places two, four and five respectively. Monash Primary School and Arawang Primary School carried the torch for the southside, in spots three and six.

Packed with potential Torrens 9 Kavel Street The potential present in this Torrens home cannot be ignored. According to licensed agent Gillian Thorn, of Christine Shaw Properties, 9 Kavel Street is “well worth considering” for future renovation or extension. “It has been in the same family since it was built around 1966,” Thorn says. “It is an unpretentious home which has been maintained over many years to a very high standard. “Although the kitchen is reminiscent of the 1970s, it has a practical layout suited to the modern family unit.”

Close to Southside hubs like the Woden Town Centre and the Southlands Shopping Centre at Mawson, this home boasts location and amenity with a simple and functional floor plan. It’s also nearby to a number of schooling options like Sacred Heart and Torrens primary schools, Marist College and Melrose High School. The bathroom and laundry have been updated, there is ample room in the front and back yards for the kids to play, and there is ducted reverse-cycle air conditioning for year-round comfort.

Thorn says this home on its 669sqm block is ideal for “first home buyers, families with young children or a buyer who would purchase the home, rent it out for 12 months whilst they draw up their plans to renovate or extend it”. “This is an entry level home situated on a good sized block with a northerly aspect to the front,” she says.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

With the Sun in Sagittarius it will certainly be helpful to those of you who deal professionally with travel, foreign affairs, and import/export. The planets are encouraging you to paint on a broader canvas in life and to be more daring. Consider letting go of old routines.

The Sun is in your 6th house and so this is a useful time for getting all those chores done, both at home and at work and for attending to your garden. It is a useful and positive time for those who work in the health or service industries.

The Sun in Sagittarius brings with it plenty of news in connection with friends and contacts, plus the chance to take a short trip. You have loads of good ideas, too, so make sure you jot them down before distractions wipe them from your mind.

The Sun is coasting along in your 12th house, the secretive side of your chart, and it is especially good for jobs which need a great deal of discretion. If you are involved with research or investigation, you will be raking in praise and recognition too.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

If you have been concerned about whether a flatmate or business partner can continue to meet their share of expenses, something will occur which will put your mind at rest. This is the ideal time to make fresh starts and to adopt new attitudes.

The coming weeks should be a profitable and happy time if you’re involved with the arts, children and entertainment. If so, push ahead with all your important plans. There’ll be a lighthearted feel about professional matters; the more you combine business with pleasure, the greater your chances of success.

The Sun is in your financial house and any Scorpios involved with money on a professional level will be positively shining. It’s a good time for putting a strategy into place for your long-term financial security, sorting out your superannuation or dealing with financial advisers and experts.

The Sun in Sagittarius highlights your connection to friends and networking. It is a particularly good time for teamwork and anything where you need other people to back you up. You may change your objectives, and this is an ideal time for doing so. Your progress will be thriving.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

Other people may have bright ideas and you may have to listen to what they have to say because, although they may create jealousy or envy within you, nevertheless, if you keep this in control and join forces with them, it will only benefit you both in the end.

This is a positive time for those of you involved with renovations, property, or family matters. It could also be a clever move to mix business with pleasure and to invite colleagues, clients, and competitors back to your home for a drink or a meal.

Happy Birthday Sagittarius! With the Sun in your sign for the next few weeks you'll be flooded with solar power, confidence, and a feeling that all is fine in your own little world. Opportunities will crop up when you least expect them, so make sure you’re ready to grab them with both hands.

Neptune indicates that people and situations are not going to be what they seem to be. Although it’s true that some people may be out to deceive you, in the main it is simply a point of your contacts being in an indecisive and confused state of mind.

TAE KWON DO Tae Kwon Do is my favourite sport and helps me destress from work. I’ve practised it since I was 14 and have trained in Sydney, Thailand, Pakistan, Lebanon, Sudan and Los Angeles. My goal is to finish the journey I started in my teenage years and pass my black belt test by the end of next year.

My favourite things

TRAVEL SOUVENIRS

I collect objects that evidence past human rights violations and have been turned into functional objects. Including: a necklace made from a bullet purchased at a Bosnia Herzegovina market; wooden pipes decorated with bullet casings from South Sudan; a bullet fashioned into a cross from the Democratic Republic of Congo; and a necklace I made from an antique bead (traded by merchants in exchange for slaves) purchased at a market in Khartoum, Sudan.

COOKING AND BAKING Being Italian, I’m a pretty good cook and love making novelty cakes for my girls. This was a photo of a Minnie Mouse cake I made for Jenna’s second birthday.

FORMICOLA

Sonia Di Mezza Human rights lawyer

Former CEO of the Domestic Violence Crisis Service ACT, Sonia Di Mezza is a human rights lawyer, solicitor, trainer, motivational speaker, advocate, and leader. At the heart of her career lies a passion and dedication to the assertion, promotion, and defence of the human rights of vulnerable people, at both a grassroots level and on a global scale. Sonia is headed to Central Victoria to take up her “dream job” as Chief Executive Officer of Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services. - Cassandra Power

This is a photo I took of Formicola, an ancient town dating back to the 12th century located in southern Italy, in the Campania (Naples) region. My mother was born there, both my parents are buried there and it’s my home away from home, the place I am most at peace.

ART My sister, Anna Di Mezza, is a talented artist. She gave me this painting when I started my first CEO job. I love it, to me it highlights the vulnerability of some women in society who might struggle to make their voices heard and reach out for help, where their human rights might be denied to them.
