Ten Year 11 students gave up their first week of Christmas holidays to move into the Boarding House and participate in the Sony Camp. Along with ten students from CGGS, the boys took on the role of full-time carers and companions for children with special needs. For the duration of the camp, the students, and a team of volunteer staff from both Schools, were responsible for the care of the campers 24 hours a day. During the course of the students participated in a huge range of activities with their campers. The activities included line dancing, bread making, swimming and making masks. particular highlight as was the mini fete and Christmas party on the final day of the camp. The camp proved to have enormous benefits for all those involved. The children with special needs were treated to three full days of activities and interactions that they would not normally have the chance to experience. The parents and carers of those children were able to get some much-needed respite at the time of year when they needed it most. And our students learnt how to care for a child with special needs. Some participants described it as an enriching, life-changing experience. By the end of the camp the students had formed very close bonds with the children they were caring for.
