Winter/Spring 2021

Canadian Vascular Access and Infusion Therapy Day January 25, 2021 marked the 5th Annual Canadian Vascular Access & Infusion Therapy Day that was celebrated across the country. This year’s theme was ONE ACCESS: THE RIGHT ONE FROM THE START. We challenged our members and chapters to explore what this means to them and we were so thrilled to see such creative celebrations! Thank you for celebrating in your region and to all of you who strive to promote best practice every day with your patients! Toronto The IV Team at the Scarborough Hospital (General and Birchmount sites) is comprised of many CVAA members. Anne Coghlan and her team were proud to celebrate the Canadian Vascular Access & Infusion Therapy Day.

Nova Scotia At the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, N.S., the commitment to evidence-based practice is demonstrated by the nurse-lead vascular access program. Since its development in 2015, the utilization of latest equipment/technology and application of best practice guidelines (CVAA, Canadian Vascular Access and Infusion Therapy Guidelines © 2019) has led to positive outcomes in that patient population, with 90% requiring IV access. The commitment of the clinician in the evolving specialty of vascular access is demonstrated through national CVAA(c) Certification and continued education.

PEI The team at Prince County Hospital with the PEI CVAA Chapter share how they are celebrating the national day with this flyer, this A-Z tips presentation and this video. Bermuda Demar Thompson and Alien Guilas-Frias share a video discussing the need for the right access.

Member Rachel Batty hosted a webinar for colleagues and clinicians about the value of guidelines during this COVID pandemic.

President’s Message In a time where everyone is asking “Is it over yet?” I come to you hoping for the same. As the newest president for CVAA, I find myself thinking of my fellow healthcare professionals who are tired and hoping for the light at the end of this tunnel. Please know that we, at CVAA, hope you and your families are safe and able to take care of yourselves. We so greatly value your membership and your time. Time to read the journal, time to read our Friday File emails, time to be a part of all of our great committees and teams. We know that your time is so precious and we appreciate you spending some of it with us. We know that if nothing else, this pandemic has taught us the value of ingenuity, to turn and pivot, and to improve the outcomes for our patients, clients and residents. At CVAA we have also been trying to create new ways to reach out to you, our members, and the reason we exist as an organization. This year will be our first fully virtual conference and I am really excited to enter this new realm with you all! The conference committee is working closely with an expert virtual event planner company to present some of the same features you have always enjoyed about our conferences, even though we are miles apart. How great would it be to have materials or devices mailed to you for your Skills Lab Station so that you can participate hands-on in real time?! This is the type of innovation we are working towards to make it the best first virtual conference ever! When I think back to the time when I first considered putting my name forth for consideration for the role of CVAA President, it never occurred to me that I would be doing it in the middle of a global change, unlike anything

most of us have ever experienced before. I come to work every day as a Nurse Educator with the intent to do the best I can for the staff and patients I see. I love a challenge and hope to effect change with my teaching. These are the attributes I humbly bring to you as your president for 2021-2022. I look forward to the evolution of CVAA in this new world and I hope that I provide the leadership you desire for our Canadian Vascular Access Association. In closing, know that we have never stopped in our mission to move vascular access and infusion therapy to the forefront of healthcare and we appreciate all you do everyday.

WITH A DUAL FORMULATION STERILE SOLUTION AND STERILE APPLICATOR. The new BD ChloraPrep™ Patient Preoperative Skin Preparation has elevated sterility assurance to a higher level, achieving a sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10 –6, the same required for injectable products.1 Other 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG)/alcohol applicators used in hospitals today do not contain sterile solutions, which may put patients at risk of infection.2 Rest assured that you’re putting your patients’ safety first when using this dual formulation of sterile 2% CHG + 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution packaged in a one-step, single-use sterile applicator. Developed by our unique proprietary sterilization process,1 we have achieved what may have been thought of as impossible. Discover the difference of overcoming antiseptic contamination. Strategic Plan

The CVAA Board of Directors held our annual weekend meeting virtually this year and were joined once again by Jacqueline Valmont of Valmont & Associates to assist us with our Strategic Planning process. Due to the uncertainty of this coming year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CVAA Board developed a one year Strategic Plan that will act as an extension of the 2018–2020 plan. Our current Strategic Priorities: • Generate, Disseminate & Translate Knowledge into Measurable Procedural Competence

• Increase, Diversity, Add Value & Engage Membership • Demonstrate and Advocate for the Value of Our Specialty • “Elevate” the Organization to Support CVAA’s Future Growth If you are interested in getting involved with any Committee or initiatives, we welcome you to contact Melissa Stark at cvaa@cvaa.info for additional information. You can find the full plan here.

Report from the NEOCVAA Chapter The 5th Annual Canadian Vascular Access and Infusion Therapy Day was advertised to our members across Northeastern Ontario with the CVAA poster and a challenge to take a quiz for a prize. Ten vascular access-related questions were sent in a Google survey format to which we received several responses. The tests are being collated and prizes will be awarded—six of our members had 10/10 questions correct! Good work! We are happy to state that COVID-19 has only had a minimal impact on our chapter activities as our usual format for membership meetings is via telemedicine to reach more than

a dozen communities in our region. The executive made the decision to cancel our in-person CVAA Learning Event (CLE) day booked for September 2020, but instead planned a Teams meeting with education (thanks to Covalon Technologies for an informative presentation) for November, enabling our annual election and AGM. NEOCVAA welcomes three new executive members from across the region to our group: Chantal Miljours (North Bay), Celine Messier (Elliot Lake) and Patrick Belec (Sudbury), as we bid farewell to Sylvie Kozlowskyj, our past administrative executive and Shelley Lacelle our past treasurer. Sylvie was awarded a Lifetime membership in our

chapter in recognition for her 10 years of support of the chapter— an award that NEOCVAA instituted three years ago to honour exemplary contribution to our NEOCVAA chapter. We are currently settling into new executive roles, including responsibility for the newsletter that is sent three times/year and management of our email account neocvaa@gmail.com. The next slated activity is our membership meeting booked in February with SterileCare Inc. providing an educational session. Behind the scenes work is happening to try and host a CLE in September 2021 from a virtual platform. Stay tuned! Stay Safe!
