HISTORY OF CSLA HISTOIRE DE ACLÉ In 1983, the students and staff of the Yorkton Regional High School were invited to host the annual provincial leadership conference of 1985. A year later the Premier of Saskatchewan, the Hon. Grant Devine, challenged the Yorkton students to turn the 1985 provincial conference into a national conference. This would be one of Saskatchewan’s contributions to the 1985 International Year of the Youth project. The students and staff of Yorkton Regional High School accepted the challenge, and the 1985 conference was held on September 18th, 19th, and 20th in Yorkton, SK. Over eight hundred students and student advisors attended this conference which had for its theme “YOUTH OF TODAY – LEADERS OF TOMORROW.” Not only did the people come from all across Canada, but there were also strong delegations from five states south of the border and one delegate from Mexico City. Among the keynote speakers were Mark Scharenbroich, Pamela Wallin, Laurie Skreslet, Jack Donahue and a host of others from within and outside Canada. The advisors at the Yorkton conference voted unanimously to support the idea of an annual leadership conference across the nation. Provinces and Territories would be invited to host these conferences. Through the interest, effort, and commitment of these advisors, the Canadian Association of Student (Government) Advisors, now known as the Canadian Student Leadership Association, was born.

The Doves In 1985, the United Nations decreed that that year be the “International Year of Youth.” This was also the year that the first Canadian Student Leadership Conference was held in Yorkton, Saskatchewan where Raymond Smuk, a Yorkton Regional High School student, designed and carved The Doves to represent Youth, Participation, Development and Peace in the year of Youth. The Doves sculpture has been passed on from conference to conference becoming an enduring symbol of mentoring, cooperation and leadership. The Doves are the common thread that connects the past, present, and future Canadian Student Leadership Conferences. In 2016, work was completed on the Doves, which included refurbishments and the addition of a second base. This work was completed by Beurnald Doiron, a teacher from Cités des Jeunes, A.M. Sormany (CSLC-CCLÉ 2016 host school). The addition of the second base is a testament to the enduring leadership legacy of CSLC to schools and communities across the country. A new refurbishment was completed in 2023 by the Harbouring Leadership Committee.

Barry Sharpe Award This award was instituted in April of 1995 at the Board of Directors’ meeting held in Toronto. It is to be presented to CSLA members who have given outstanding service to the organization. Upon creation, it was identified that this award should be given out “sparingly” as it holds special meaning. Barry Sharpe was an activity director at Yorkton Regional High School, and Barry, along with his students and staff, ran the very first Canadian Student Leadership Conference. It was Barry’s vision and efforts that inspired other advisors from across the country to formalize student leadership. This award is the highest recognition that an advisor can receive in the realm of student leadership and activities. It is given in recognition of exemplary effort and inspiration to a person who has furthered the cause of student leadership and activities in Canada.

CSLA is pleased to offer twelve $500.00 annual student awards to exemplary student leaders from across Canada. The aim of these awards is to recognize outstanding achievement and contribution to student leadership in secondary schools and communities across Canada.

The F.W. (Bill) Conconi ‘Above and Beyond’ Leadership Award This award acknowledges an emerging student leader who demonstrates exemplary leadership, positive impact and influence on their peers and community, and a selfless contribution to improve the world around them. The Above and Beyond Award will help to secure the legacy of dedicated leadership that Bill Conconi has shown over his tenure with CSLA. Bill Conconi led the Canadian Student Leadership Association from a well-intentioned group of volunteer advisors to an official, registered not for profit organization. He has mentored dozens of advisors, contributed thousands of hours of his time, secured literally millions of dollars of sponsorship funding and, along with his wife, Ellie, hosted hundreds of student leaders on the Oriole tall ship experience. Bill led by doing; by working; by providing opportunities and the support for others to lead. He invites others to make their greatest leadership contribution using their unique skillset. This award is an extension of the CSLA Award Program, choosing from the top award submissions for the annual Canadian Student Leader Awards. In addition to the attributes identified by the award selection committee, sustainable impact or change influence are crucial in the decision making process. The winner receives a $1000 award in recognition of their achievements.

Keynote Speakers Bean Gill In her 20s, Gill was working as an X-ray technologist in a cardiac catheterization lab. But, in 2012, when she turned 30, everything changed. She left an abusive relationship, her dad left her family and, during a trip to Las Vegas, a virus paralyzed her from the waist down. While relaxing in a hotel room with close friends, she felt a sudden, stabbing pain in her spine. "The pain lasted only a few minutes, and then I couldn't move my right leg. I was paralyzed within 10 minutes." Multiple neurologists told Gill a virus was likely to blame, and she would regain full use of her legs within weeks. After several months of no progress, Bean was forced to come to grips with her new reality. A once athletic young woman who enjoyed modeling, kickboxing, and weightlifting, she struggled with betrayal by her own body. She couldn't roll over, sit up, or get out of bed without help. She was forced to find her way through an inaccessible society, all the while living with paralysis and learning how to love herself - disability and all. "My life was flipped upside down. I hated everything about me. I hated my life." Bean took her health into her own hands, seeking out the answers and help she needed to confront her challenges head-on. Eventually, Gill found her confidence again. She worked to regain movement in her legs and pushed herself to try sports she never would have attempted before being paralyzed. If it wasn't for the worst year of her life, Gill wouldn't be who she is today.

Let’s Talk About Accessibility In 1985, Rick Hansen set out on the Man in Motion World Tour; a 26 month, 34 country, 40,000 km wheelchair marathon. The Tour raised $26 million and changed the way people with disabilities were perceived. The Rick Hansen Foundation (RHF), established in 1988, is part of its legacy. For over three decades, RHF has raised awareness, changed attitudes and funded spinal cord injury research and care. Today, roughly one in five Canadians identify as having a disability, and that number is growing as our population ages. We’re working on breaking down one of the most fundamental barriers that people with disabilities still face: physical barriers in the places where we live, work, learn and play. Our Mission To create and deliver innovative solutions that lead to a global movement to remove barriers and liberate the potential of people with disabilities. We believe that by encouraging youth to take action on issues that matter to them, they can become leaders in creating an accessible, inclusive world. You can help inspire the next generation of Difference Makers by sharing Rick Hansen’s story and teaching about the importance of inclusion. Start meaningful conversations about disability in your classroom or home by using our educational resources or by inviting one of our Ambassadors to speak. Continue the conversation by celebrating the students, teachers and community leaders who are making an impact with our annual Difference Maker Awards.

Decolonizing the Calendar: Creative ways to move reconciliation forward IWhat days are important to you? What makes one day more special than another? As we learn more about reconciliation we are also learning about what it means to decolonize. This word can be scary for some, but there are simple things we can do in our everyday lives to spark conversations and take actions that will create a more inclusive Canada. In the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund’s new Legacy Schools calendar, we removed “colonial” days of significance, and focused only on Indigenous Days of importance. Why would we do this? In this workshop we will delve into days that are important for us, what makes one day important to one person and not another, and why it’s important to ask critical questions in order to see truth and patterns within Canada’s own true history. This will help us move forward on the path to reconciliation. For students, we will make Elder magnets and speak about the special days that are passed down through family, friends and those who come before us, like Elders. Teachers will come away with lesson ideas to do with their own students using the Legacy Schools Toolkits and calendar.

Mi’gmaq Culture – Contributing to Understanding and Moving Forward As a Mi’gmaq Elder/Knowledge Keeper, I am humbled to share my Mi’gmaq culture. I share traditional and ancient historical views as well as storytelling, a very old method of transferring customs that apply to practical more contemporary traditional views and practices. I believe “We are all Treaty People” and it is our responsibility to contribute to our country’s Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action plan to assist in Canadians moving forward. I am a life-long learner and appreciate all that life has to offer.

Embrace, Educate, Empower: Fostering Inclusivity in Canadian Schools In Canada, a diverse and multicultural nation, the inclusion of international students is vital for fostering a global perspective and promoting unity. However, welcoming students from other parts of the world comes with its unique challenges, especially in terms of mental health. This workshop aims to address these issues and suggest practical solutions that schools can implement to create an inclusive environment for all students.

All Means All - Creating inclusive schools that welcome students with disabilities Inclusion means meeting the needs of ALL students. We all have the right to belong. We also have the right to learn and work together. There was a time when many people who had an intellectual disability, or other disabilities, were not welcome in public schools. Persons with an intellectual disability were not valued for their strengths, but merely judged on the basis of their disability. Over the years, we have learned that inclusive education benefits all students. Everyone learns better when there is a sense of belonging and respect. Inclusion helps everyone develop their individual strengths and gifts and helps us to create friendships with a diverse variety of people. As a high school student, you are probably well aware of the realities and the effects of exclusion. You may have felt excluded yourself at some point. It’s not a nice feeling. This workshop will tackle a number of issues around inclusion. Issues like harassment, bullying, and loneliness are getting students, teachers, principals, and other school staff to look for new and creative ways to make their high schools healthy and positive “communities” for everyone.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Training At PRUDE Inc., we pioneer conversations that promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). For over four decades, through our Consulting, Training, and Education programs, we have been providing support to decision-makers on bridging cultural divides, addressing institutional discrimination, and confronting barriers to inclusion. All cultures, like people, have different personalities, and we often modify our behaviors to fit into the comfort zone of a specific cultural setting. Doing so has a direct effect on how we learn, work, and collaborate with others. Our DEI Training focuses on building ‘cultural Intelligence’, i.e. the ability to deal more effectively across cultural differences and enrich your lived experiences in ways that promote accountability and responsibility. Learning objectives: Enhance the understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion Cultural competence advocacy Explore cross-cultural communication styles Further self-awareness and behavior identification Explore teambuilding strategies
