Matthew grew up on the farm and is a 3rd generation dairy farmer. His dad and grandpa milked Ayshires until his dad sold in 1989. They then rented the barn until 1992 to a Holstein breeder.

After that they farmed cash crop and had some beef cows. Matthew always wanted to milk cows, but it was hard to get into. He worked at a dairy farm, then worked at Nielsen’s dairy and later drove the milk truck for Carleton Coop (now Blue Water). His love always remained in dairy farming however.

Matthew and I were married in 2003 and we eventually welcomed 3 children (Isabella 13, Lily 11, and Carson 8).

In 2011 we decided to apply to start milking cows through the new entrant program. We applied 3 times and finally got accepted on Christmas Eve 2013 to start milking in December 2014. Matthew left his full-time job to start getting the farm ready and to watch his son and I went to work full time at Manotick Tree Movers (I still work there today).

We went with Jerseys because we liked their smaller frame, ease of calving, and great components; plus I liked the look of them. We milk in a tie stall barn and needed to find a sturdy cow that would fit our stalls without much retrofitting. We bought a complete herd from Noelville, Ontario, and they arrived in the fall of 2014. We started with 63 Jerseys and have now grown to over 100 head. We love their curiosity and personalities and how efficient they milk.

The majority of the chores are done by ourselves with help from Matthew’s dad Ray and our kids. We usually have a high school student year-round who helps with the evening chores. We have improved in both production and classification year after year. In 2016 we were the 3rd most improved Jersey herd for BCA in Ontario. We have focused on lowering our SCC as we bought a staph positive herd, and are also focusing on better production while improving on overall conformation. Our farm goal is to have excellent producing cows with good longevity and health. We hope to build a herd that will last for future generations and be something to be proud of.

Matthew a grandi sur la ferme et est un producteur laitier de 3e génération. Son père et son grand-père avaient des Ayrshires jusqu’à ce que son père les vende en 1989. Ils ont alors loué la grange à un éleveur Holstein jusqu’en 1992.

Ensuite la famille faisait des grandes cultures et élevait quelques vaches de boucherie. Matthew a toujours voulu traire des vaches, mais il était difficile de s’établir. Il a travaillé sur une ferme laitière puis à la laiterie Nielsen pour ensuite conduire le camion de lait pour Carleton Coop (maintenant Blue Water). Son amour premier était toujours de devenir producteur laitier.

Matthew et moi nous sommes mariés en 2003 et nous avons éventuellement accueilli 3 enfants (Isabella 13 ans, Lily 11 ans et Carson 8 ans).

En 2011, nous avons décidé de faire la demande pour commencer à traire des vaches grâce au programme de d’aide aux nouveaux producteurs. Nous avons fait 3 demandes et avons finalement été acceptés la veille de Noël 2013 pour commencer à produire du lait en décembre 2014. Matthew a quitté son emploi à temps plein pour préparer la ferme et s’occuper de son fils pendant que je travaillais à temps plein chez Manotick Tree Movers (où je travaille encore aujourd’hui).

Nous avons décidé d’opter pour des Jerseys car nous aimions leur plus petit taille, leur facilité au vêlage et les bonnes composantes – en plus, j’aimais leur apparence. Nous faisons la traite dans une étable entravée et nous avions besoin de trouver une vache solide qui irait bien dans nos logettes, sans avoir à trop rénover. Nous avons acheté un troupeau complet à Noëlville, Ontario et les vaches sont arrivées à l’automne 2014. Nous avons débuté avec 63 Jerseys et nous avons maintenant plus de 100 animaux. Nous aimons leur curiosité, leur personnalité et leur efficacité à la traite.

La majorité des tâches sont accomplies par Matthew et moi avec l’aide du père de Matthew, Ray, et des enfants. Nous avons habituellement un étudiant en secondaire qui travaille toute l’année pour les tâches du soir. Nous avons amélioré la production et la classification, année après année. En 2016 nous avions le titre de 3e meilleure amélioration pour un troupeau Jersey pour la MCR en Ontario. Nous nous sommes concentrés sur la réduction du CCS, car nous avons acheté un troupeau positif à la staph, et nous nous concentrons aussi sur une meilleure production tout en améliorant la conformation générale. Le but de notre ferme est d’avoir d’excellentes productrices de bonne longévité et en bonne santé. Nous espérons construire un troupeau qui durera pour les prochaines générations et qui fera notre fierté.
